Family and fans fought to hold back tears Sunday as they mourned the tragic loss of Glee actor Cory Monteith, who had a history of battling addiction, after he was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room the previous day.
Richard Monteith’s shoulders shook as he laid down a bouquet of white flowers outside the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, where his cousin’s body was found.
Squatting with his head in his hands, Richard said he and Monteith were “decently close” and saw each other last April.
Richard’s reaction was echoed by Monteith’s estranged father, Joe Monteith.
“I’m not making no comments, I’m not up to it,” said Joe, after a long, quiet pause.
Monteith, who rose to fame as Glee’s quarterback-turned-singer Finn Hudson, was found dead at the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel.
The 31-year-old actor checked into the hotel July 6 and hotel staff discovered the star’s body after he failed to check out Saturday, Vancouver police said.
Just when you thought it was safe to forget about Carly Rae Jepsen for a little while, she goes and does something like this. The Canadian pop star, slowly easing out of the public consciousness after the ubiquitous success of her song “Call Me Maybe” last year, was asked to throw the ceremonial first pitch before the Tampa Bay Rays’ game against the Houston Astros.
What she provided can only be loosely defined as a ‘pitch.’

Whitney Houston's grave has been commemorated with the words ''I Will Always Love You''.
The iconic singer's final resting place was given a tombstone last week - after being unmarked for more than a year following her death from accidental drowning in February 2012 - and the shrine is engraved with the lyrics to her most famous song.
The iconic line is inscribed on a new tear drop-shaped monument, which also has a heart shape embossed on it.
The ornate gravestone was installed at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey, where Whitney is buried next to her father.
As well as the lyrics, the towering tribute also heralds the gifted songstress as 'The Voice'.
It reads: ''Whitney E. Houston, Aug. 9, 1963 - Feb. 11, 2012, 'THE VOICE', 'I will always love you'. ''
'I Will Always Love You' was first written and performed by country singer Dolly Parton but became synonymous with Whitney after she recorded it for the soundtrack of her 1992 movie, 'The Bodyguard'.
Whitney's version earned her two Grammy Awards and has sold over 12 million copies around the world.
The ballad has been performed by a number of contemporary female artists following Whitney's death in honour of the singer. Jennifer Hudson gave an emotional performance of the song the night after her death at the 2012 Grammy Awards, while Beyonce has included it in her current The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.

Ask television news executives how long they have been planning for the royal baby’s arrival, and they’re liable to answer with a joke: nearly as long as Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge have been.
Thanks to their plans, the birth, whenever it happens — any day now, if the tabloids are to be believed — will be a spectacle unlike any other in the modern media age, complete with sweeping helicopter shots of St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, and Buckingham Palace. “This is probably the most anticipated birth since the dawn of Twitter,” said Jon Williams, the foreign editor for ABC News.

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for Lanvin
Over their 26 years of professional collaboration, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have become powerhouse photographers in the fashion world. As pioneers of digital manipulation, they’ve amassed a vast portfolio: editorial shoots for Vogue Paris and Harper’s Bazaar; commercial ad campaigns for Dior, Gucci and Louis Vuitton; as well as several fashion films. Meanwhile, they’ve also exhibited their own photography from Amsterdam to Brazil and back. Inez & Vinoodh’s latest effort is a study in portraiture, both human and flowers, opening today at the Gagosian Beverly Hills.
According to a recent study, listening to sad music is actually a good thing. So the next time your friends begin to harass you about blasting your sappy music at loud volumes, respond with this study.
Frontiers in Psychology, an open-access journal, states: "Emotion experienced by music has no direct danger or harm unlike the emotion experienced in everyday life. Therefore, we can even enjoy unpleasant emotion such as sadness. If we suffer from unpleasant emotion evoked through daily life, sad music might be helpful to alleviate negative emotion."
"Music that is perceived as sad actually induces romantic emotion as well as sad emotion. And people, regardless of their musical training, experience this ambivalent emotion to listen to the sad music."
Also, unlike sadness in daily life, sadness experienced through art actually feels pleasant, possibly because the latter does not pose an actual threat to our safety. This could help people to deal with their negative emotions in daily life, concluded the authors.

Google is celebrating the 407th birthday of artist Rembrandt van Rijn with a homepage doodle that pays homage to an oil on canvas painting from 1659.
Google.com today features a darkened background with Rembrandt's self portrait - known as "Self-Portrait with Beret and Turned-Up Collar" - in front of the logo.
According to the National Gallery of Art, which has housed the self portrait since 1937, Rembrandt painted this self portrait after he'd been forced to sell many of his possessions to pay off debts.
"Early descriptions of the painting therefore mentioned an aura of melancholy surrounding the artist, yet the removal of dark, discolored varnish in 1992 proved that interpreting paintings on the basis of an artist's chronological life story is dangerous: the cleaned portrait revealed a rich range of pinks and bright flesh tones, forcing a reassessment of Rembrandt's 'mood,'" according to the gallery. "Instead of sadness, the deep–set eyes that bore into those of the viewer seem to express inner strength and dignity."
Rembrandt's self portrait was reportedly inspired by a Raphael portrait he saw at a 1639 auction in Amsterdam.
The artist was born in 1606 and relocated to Amsterdam in 1631, where he set up a studio in the office of art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh, according to a biography from the Getty Museum. He became well-known for his portraits. "The core of Rembrandt's oeuvre, however, consists of biblical and—to a much lesser extent—historical, mythological, and allegorical "history pieces," all of which he painted, etched, or sketched in pen and ink or chalk," according to Encyclopedia Britannica.
Later in life, Rembrandt ran into financial troubles, but he was still a sought-after artist. He died in 1669.
Kim Kardashian is under attack for weighing in on the controversial Travyon Martin murder case verdict with many people outraged that she tweeted “no justice” as a hash tag when her father helped O.J. Simpson get acquitted in his criminal trial for double murder.
George Zimmeran was found not guilty of all charges in the killing of Martin and while that verdict generated outrage there was also some spillover to Kim because of her comment.
“My heart goes out to Trayvon Martin’s family & loved ones. Thought & prayers being sent their way. #nojustice,´ the 32-year-old reality star wrote on Twitter shortly after the verdict.
However, the backlash was swift with people slamming her own father, Robert Kardashian, for his part as the defense team that helped get OJ Simpson acquitted of the murders of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in 1995.

The comedian-actress will fill one of the open slots on ABC’s popular daytime talk show this fall.
Longtime The View fans already have some sense of what she’s like on the panel. McCarthy, has made 17 previous appearances on the show, including eight as a guest co-host. For months the media has speculated that McCarthy is likely to fill a vacancy on the show.
The View saw the departure of longtime co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck last week to Fox News, while Joy Behar will leave next month. Founding co-host Barbara Walters has announced she will leave the show next summer, but will remain on the show as a producer.
“Jenny brings us intelligence as well as warmth and humor,” Walters said in a statement. “She can be serious and outrageous. She has connected with our audience and offers a fresh point of view. Jenny will be a great addition to the show as we usher in an exciting new chapter for The View.”
“I’m beyond thrilled … I look forward to helping make hot topics a little bit hotter, and showing my mom that my interrupting skills have finally paid off,” McCarthy added in a statement.
McCarthy, 40, also thanked VH1 for allowing her to take the gig. She was under contract to her new late-night talk show, The Jenny McCarthy Show, on the cable network, but the program wasn’t a ratings breakout anyway. The former Playboy Playmate became a celebrity name as the goofy-sexy host of MTV’s Singled Out, has had guest star roles on several sitcoms and pens an advice column.
McCarthy will join the 17th season of The View which begins Sept. 9.

HBO will continue to take a bite out of audiences.
The premium cable network announced Monday that it has renewed True Blood for a seventh season. The series, which stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard, will return in summer 2014 with Brian Buckner returning as showrunner.
"True Blood remains a signature show for HBO, and a true phenomenon with our viewers," said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo in making the announcement. “Thanks to Brian Buckner and his talented team, the show continues to be a thrill ride like nothing else on TV.”
True Blood returned in June, its sixth season premiere drew 4.5 million total viewers, down about 700,000 year-over-year facing stiff competition from Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
Season six marked the show's first without series creator Alan Ball, who adapted the story from Charlane Harris' popular book series. Buckner, for his part, replaced Mark Hudis -- who was initially set to take over for Ball.

As an artist, Beyonce definitely has a low tolerance for camera phones, especially fans who won’t put down their phones long enough to enjoy a moment. This past weekend, while performing “Irreplaceable” in Atlanta, she had a few select fans assist her in singing the lyrics to the track and noticed one guy who was too busy trying to film video on his phone to join in on the fun. Legendary musician and future R&B Hall of Fame inductee Lester Chambers suffered injuries Saturday after he was attacked on stage for dedicating a song to Trayvon Martin.
According to police, the Civil-Rights-era leader of soul rock group The Chambers Brothers was performing at the Hayward-Russell City Blues Festival in downtown Hayward, California, when he was suddenly rushed by a woman identified as 43-year-old Dinalynn Andrews Potter after he dedicated Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" to Trayvon Martin shortly following George Zimmerman's acquittal.
Chambers' wife Lola said the 73-year-old musician told audience members that Mayfield would have changed the lyric "there's a train a comin" to "there's a change a comin" were he alive today.
Friend and fellow musician Kurt Crowbar Kangas filed this report following the incident:
[T]he woman who attacked him was white and yelled something like “it’s all your fault” before she hit him, he went down hard but was halfway caught by Barren, thank God, she was subdued by Police and taken away while the para-medics came and took him to a local Hospital where he went thru a series of cat scans, no broken bones, the only injury for now is a 8″ scratch in the kidney area of his back and it’s starting to swell.
( Collapse )
He reportedly suffered a bruised rib muscle and nerve damage as a result of the assault.
Andrews Potter was arrested and booked on suspicion of battery before being released. Chambers' family is looking to have police charge her with a hate crime.
Chambers was last in the news in March of 2012 after he came forward to reveal that unscrupulous record execs withheld royalties from him for years, forcing him to live on $1,200 a month.
UPDATE: A donation page for Lester Chambers set up by the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund in 2009 can be found here. Its stated purpose is the "assist Lester with medical bills and urgent living expenses," which seem particularly relevant today given this incident.
Scandal: It’s a term music super manager Larry Rudolph is all too familiar with.
As Miley Cyrus continues to revamp her image, the former Disney star has raised eyebrows with a controversial new music video, frank discussions about alcohol, drugs and sex, and near-constant “will they, won’t they” speculation surrounding her engagement to Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.
Cyrus might be the latest, but she follows in a long line of pop princesses such as Britney Spears, also managed by Rudolph, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and more to shed their family-friendly skin in an effort to “grow up.”
Now, Rudolph is managing up-and-coming girl group G.R.L., a quintet of young ladies hoping to break into the industry. Since the manager rarely takes on new clients, there’s something to be said about the group’s prospects.
Asked whether there’s a plan in place to watch the girls grow up in the industry, Rudolph says it can only happen “organically.”
“Miley is doing it now organically,” he says. “There’s no such thing as ‘OK, let’s figure out the plan for growing up.’ It doesn’t work. The public sees through it in two seconds, and every artist who’s tried to do it has failed.”

In the wake of Cory Monteith's untimely death on Saturday, July 13, "Glee" fans and the TV industry are left wondering: Where does "Glee" go from here?
Since the Fox musical dramedy's debut, Monteith played Finn Hudson, quarterback-turned-glee-club-leader. Many considered his character the show's backbone, its heart and soul. Finn was tied to Rachel Berry (played by Monteith's real-life girlfriend Lea Michele) from the show's start and the couple, dubbed Finchel by "Glee" fans, has been a central part of the show.
It's too soon to tell how "Glee" producers will handle Monteith's passing. The show was scheduled to begin production on Season 5 in late July, but TheWrap reports producers and Fox executives are weighing their options how to handle the death. Could "Glee" push its Season 5 premiere from September 19? It's a possibility.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones," "Glee" executive producers, 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Broadcasting Company said in a statement.
The character of Finn was last seen on "Glee," studying to become a teacher, in April. Though Season 4 of "Glee" ended in May, Monteith was absent from the last few episodes because he entered rehab.

Popular cloud-based file-sharing service Dropbox wants to be all things to all people, with big plans to share application metadata — game saves, settings preferences and so forth — as well as raw files across devices and platforms.
But when Dropbox CEO Drew Houston announced last week that Dropbox intends to "replace the hard drive," he probably didn't expect Chinese hackers to take him up on it so quickly.
Comment Crew, the same Chinese cyberespionage team thought to be behind the recent attack on The New York Times, has been using publicly shared Dropbox folders to spread malware, reports Arlington, Va., digital-security firm Cyber Squared.
"The attackers have simply registered for a free Dropbox account, uploaded the malicious content and then publicly shared it with their targeted users," a Cyber Squared blog posting explained last week.
For malicious hackers, Dropbox is an attractive malware distribution platform because it's widely used in the corporate environment and is unlikely to be blocked by IT security teams.
In this way, Cyber Squared wrote, "the attackers could mask themselves behind the trusted Dropbox brand, increasing credibility and the likelihood of victim interaction with the malicious file from either personal or corporate Dropbox users."

There’s the movie star that plays herself and the movie star like Meryl [Streep] that has this wonderful, glamorous persona intact and is undone every time she takes on a new character. I think I’m astounded and titillated by that.”
On not getting work after Temple Grandin: “I was stuck… It was confusing. I got a lot of plaudits, and it didn’t translate into more work. I was really, really struggling during that time. It was grim. I was very hurt. Two years of not working was brutal. And a point came where I thought, I really like interior design. Someone suggested, ‘Maybe your real success is in your personal life.’”

I have a bone to pick with Rockstar.
Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, and Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite games of all time, but I am still not happy with the company. Despite producing fantastic experiences within the past decade, there is one thing that bothers me most about the games that they have made: none of their major franchises features a single female protagonist. Sure, there was a game published by the company in 2001 called Oni, but other than that, there has been no substantial account of a woman as a lead in twelve years.

The cause of actor Cory Monteith's death remained unclear Monday, and authorities in Canada said it could take several days before toxicology test results are in.
Vancouver police Sgt. Randy Fincham said there's nothing to indicate the "Glee" star's death was due to illicit drug use.
Monteith, 31, was found dead in his Vancouver, British Columbia, hotel room on Saturday, according to police, who have ruled out foul play.
Police said Monteith had been out with people earlier, but video and electronic records from the hotel indicated he returned to his room by himself early Saturday. He was believed to be alone when he died.
TORONTO – The initial autopsy into the death of Canadian actor Cory Monteith has been completed in Vancouver.
“It was done today, and that included taking samples for toxicology,” B.C. Coroner Services spokeswoman Barb McLintock told The Hollywood Reporter late Monday afternoon.
McLintock said the results of the initial autopsy should be available Tuesday.
If they prove inconclusive, additional tests may be required at the provincial lab to establish the cause of death for Monteith, whose body was discovered Saturday in a Vancouver hotel room.
McLintock added that Monteith’s family will be the first to receive news of the initial autopsy results.
“We don’t want them reading stuff in the newspaper or on websites first,” she insisted.
In season one, The Newsroom was the most insufferable good show on TV: so expertly acted, shot, directed, and edited that its flaws were all the more maddening. My colleague Tim Goodman put it nicely in his Hollywood Reporter review, arguing that the term “hate-watching” was the wrong one to apply to Aaron Sorkin's TV journalism drama. “Don’t kid yourself – you were ‘disappointment-watching.’”

He was a special part of this world and will forever be missed. My heart goes out to Cory’s family and Lea and while we are grateful for everyone's well wishes, privacy during this time of grief is greatly appreciated."
Rivera, along with stars Lea Michele (Monteith's girlfriend), Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz and others, was one of the original Glee stars. She was promoted to series regular in season two.

"Scandal" is heading to BET. The Viacom-owned cable network has acquired off-network rights to ABC's breakout hit Scandal, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. Under the pact, BET will begin airing seasons one and two of the Kerry Washington political-fixer drama this summer. Additionally, original episodes from the upcoming third season of the Shonda Rhimes series will air in the fall after they are broadcast on ABC, with the exact delay yet to be determined. The deal for off-network repeats extends to additional seasons of the drama if it should continue its run (likely).
No shirt, no shoes, no much of anything, no problem. Nick Cannon says he's completely supportive of wife Mariah Carey posting a sexy video on Instagram of herself celebrating the 4th of July in a red bikini, leaving little to the imagination.
"I encourage her to do that stuff as long as it makes her happy," he told People Wednesday at the launch of his NCredible headphones at a Midtown Staples in New York City last week. "When you got it, flaunt it. It's a beautiful thing to be a mother and to be able to express your sexuality."
Carey recently dislocated her right shoulder while filming a music video in New York. And even with her arm in a sling for the next couple of weeks, she still manages to look gorgeous. But does Cannon ever worry about all those male admirers?
"Nah. We're so secure with who we are. And Mariah's my dream girl," he says. "I actually grew up as one of those guys that loved to see those pictures."

"Fashion can be really racist, looking at the clothes of other cultures as costumes...That’s mundane and it’s old hat. Let’s break down some barriers,” Alexander McQueen was once quoted as saying. But employees at the late designer's flagship store in the Meatpacking District apparently never heard that one, and are now facing a lawsuit from a former security guard accusing them of spewing racist vitriol during the two years he monitored the store.
22-year-old Othman Ibela, a native of Gabon, allegedly endured various racist "jokes" lobbed by the store's salespeople, the Post reports. According to the complaint, which was filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Ibela said one clerk in particular “repeatedly made jokes about me running nude in Africa with a spear in my hand,” while the store's manager asked him “why Muslims were always killing people.”
He added also that the employees shunned black customers when they entered the showroom—except, of course, for Beyoncé, who was given the star treatment.
The staff denies the allegations and an employee who answered the phone told us that the store's manager, Catherine Flynn, is currently on vacation.
i always find it 'amusing' when staff in expensive stores give you 'the look'. they must forget that they WORK there, and their broke-asses probably can't afford shit anyway. stories?

"The show hopefully will express all facets of gay life," he said. "We're all different types of people. There's lots of people who have anonymous sex. There's also people looking for love. There's people looking for an open relationship. There are also the queens. There are those you wouldn't know were gay. It's the gay experience."
In addition to Groff, the series is also slated to star Frankie J. Alvarez (Smash) and Murray Bartlett (All My Children).
HBO has already ordered eight episodes of the series based on Michael Lannan’s 2011 short film Lorimer. Directed by Andrew Haigh, the series will be produced by Sarah Condon (Bored to Death) and Broadway vet David Marshall Grant (Brothers and Sisters), alongside Lannan as co-executive producer.

The soul legend will not play in any state with “Stand Your Ground” laws.
During a concert Sunday in Quebec City, Wonder announced he would not be performing in Florida until its Stand Your Ground law is “abolished.” The law contributed to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Here’s the transcript of Wonder’s statement (the video follows):
“The truth is that—for those of you who’ve lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world—we can’t bring them back. What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That’s what I know we can do.
“And I know I’m not everybody, I’m just one person. I’m a human being. And for the gift that God has given me, and from whatever I mean, I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again. As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.
“Because what I do know is that people know that my heart is of love for everyone. When I say everyone I mean everyone. As I said earlier, you can’t just talk about it, you have to be about it. We can make change by coming together for the spirit of unity. Not in destruction, but in the perpetuation of life itself.”
Since the verdict, musicians including Beyoncé, Young Jeezy, Wyclef Jean, and Lil Scrappy have shared musical tributes to Martin. [via Complex]

Who says Frankenstein's creature can't be kind of a good-lookin' fella?
"The Dark Knight" star Aaron Eckhart is bringing his square-jawed, all-American handsomeness to a rather unlikely role: the monstrous protagonist of Mary Shelley's classic gothic tale, "Frankenstein," the wretched creation of a misguided medical student whose abandonment and rejection by a cruel world drives him to take vicious revenge against his "father" and his loved ones.
Eckhart's appearance in the latest cinematic adaptation of the book, "I, Frankenstein," certainly makes for a new kind of creature. There are no bolts on the neck like with Boris Karloff's iconic portrayal in James Whale's "Frankenstein" (1941) nor excessive scarring to the point of hideous disfigurement like Robert De Niro's poor wretch in Kenneth Branagh's "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" (1994).
In fact, this creature is actually kind of a hunk, whilst still having gruesome features that identify him as a "monster." "There's no neck bolts in this film, but we do get a sense that he's made up of about six corpses," said Eckhart to Entertainment Weekly. "Every day in makeup, we did a pretty extensive scarring session."
