So as I posted earlier, DMG Entertainment, which distributed Looper and Iron Man 3 in China, is funding Wally Pfister's Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman, and Paul Bettany. And now we have video of a set visit!
Unlike previous DMG-financed films like Iron Man 3 and Looper, Transcendence will not have any “China exclusive” footage. It will likely see a release in the country thanks to the deal, however.

The script & cast look amazing btw
Some began to wonder about the status of Johnny Depp's relationship at Disney after the $250 million western Lone Ranger bombed at the box office, but it turns out that their bond is just as strong as never. Not only is Depp set to star in the studio's adaptation of the Broadway musical Into The Woods for 2014 and another Pirates of the Caribbean sequel in 2015, now we are learning that Depp is both close to signing on to do a sequel to a different one of his Disney hits and has moved his production company to be a part of the House of Mouse.
Deadline has the news that the international star is now working out a deal that will see him star in the sequel to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Talk about a follow-up began to gain steam when it was rumored that The Muppets director James Bobin could take the helm of the feature; now that report has been confirmed and it appears that the franchise will be continuing with its biggest star. Unless there are some big changes in the works, Depp will presumably return as the Mad Hatter. The article doesn't mention if any of his co-stars from the first movie, such as Mia Wasikowska or Helena Bonaham Carter, will be joining him in part two. Linda Woolverton, who wrote the Burton film, is handling the script.
It has also been discovered by Variety that Depp has moved his production company, Infinitum Nihil, over to Disney from Warner Bros. Deadline says that this deal was actually struck back in March, but is only being discovered now. The studio has given the actor a multi-year first-look deal that will allow him to produce titles under the studio brand. Infinitum Nihil was founded back in 2004 but didn't release a film until the 2011 Hunter S. Thompson adaptation The Rum Diary. He also produced Martin Scorsese's Hugo, Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, and Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger.
This is the second potential project that Depp has lined up this week. He is also in talks to reunite with Secret Window director David Koepp on Mortdecai, which will see him star as an art dealer/rogue named Charlies Mortdeai who goes on a globetrotting mission to try and recover a stolen painting so that he can get a code that will lead to a safe fill with Nazi gold. Depp will be trying to squeeze the project in before he has to start production on Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which means that the Alice in Wonderland sequel might not be happening all that soon.
Depp will next be seen in Oscar winning cinematographer/first-time director Wally Pfister's sci-fi thriller Transcendence, in which he will play a man who has become one with a computer. The movie co-stars Kate Mara, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Cole Hauser, and Clifton Collins Jr. and will be in theaters April 18, 2014.
A tiny cage is not a life.
I take my beloved dog George with me almost everywhere I go. Once, George even shared the stage with me on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
The bond I have with George is not unique. Like me, countless Canadians share their homes and lives with pets they consider to be part of the family. We know that they have individual personalities and quirks (George loves apples, for example) and that they feel both physical and mental pain.
Our pets share these traits with other animals; including those we don’t share our lives with, such as farm animals. As primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall has noted, “Farm animals feel pleasure and sadness, excitement and resentment, depression, fear and pain. They are far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined … they are individuals in their own right.”
Pigs, specifically, outperform even chimpanzees on some tests of cognitive prowess.
So of course these animals also deserve our care and attention. That’s why I was so heartened to learn that Canada is taking steps toward improving the treatment of animals in the food supply.

If it's not clear from his new movie, "Crystal Fairy" director Sebastian Silva is in favor of a little drug experimentation -- but only when dealing with "spiritual" substances.
While speaking to Uinterview, Silva said he believed it was important for people to seek famed drugs like mescaline, the hallucinogen that becomes the center of "Crystal Fairy."
"I highly recommend kids to take drugs," the director said. "But I'm not talking about cocaine or crystal meth. You know, what I'm talking about is Aldous Huxley kind of stuff."
Because religion can be hard to "buy into," Silva said, spiritual drugs -- products that are often said to provide inner awakenings and deeper connections with one's true self, a la LSD and other hallucinogens -- will foster a "relationship with yourself that is outside of, like, mundane experience."
But Michael Cera, who stars in the movie and is featured alongside Silva in the interview, chimed in to offer a conflicting viewpoint on the director's liberal take. Cera admitted during an appearance on HuffPost Live this week that he and co-star Gaby Hoffmann took actual mescaline while filming "Fairy," but he doesn't condone drug activity.
"The kids that I grew up with that have done drugs have been really sad to watch," Cera said. "I've seen it get bad with people."
But Silva says it's "wrong to consider mescaline a drug and put it in the same bag as crack."
"Fairy" receives a limited release this weekend. Head over to Uinterview to watch Cera and Silva discuss drugs and other aspects of the movie.
Tom Cruise is the face of Scientology and he convinced Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes to join the church during his respective marriages to them. Of course neither marriage lasted, and Kidman and Holmes both left the church, with rumors it was the controversial religion that played a role in the demise of each relationship.
Neither has commented on the rumors, and Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter, "I've chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology. I have two children [adopted with Cruise] who are Scientologists -- Connor and Isabella -- and I utterly respect their beliefs."
Meanwhile, actress Nazanin Boniadi -- the woman who was allegedly handpicked by the church to be Cruise's girlfriend from November 2004 until January 2005 before running afoul of the religion's leader David Miscavage -- also left the church. Vanity Fair claims Boniadi's decision to leave the church came after she was punished for her insubordination by having to scrub toilets with a toothbrush, clean bathroom tiles with acid and dig ditches in the middle of the night, and later was sent out to hawk Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics on street corners.

The one element of Guillermo del Toro's gargantuan "Pacific Rim" that does not seem to be dividing audiences into warring camps is the fierce and charismatic performance of Rinko Kikuchi as the gifted giant robot pilot Mako Mori, whose emotions cut through the visual clutter of every scene she's in. "I wanted someone who could bring reality and be strong but fragile," del Toro told the Boston Herald. "That’s Rinko."
Kikuchi's gift for burning into our consciousness just with the intensity of of her gaze was already evident in 2006, when she became the first Japanese actress in 50 years to be nominated for an Oscar, for her wordless performance as a deaf mute high school student in Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Babel." (Miyoshi Umeki had won Best Supporting in 1957 for "Sayonara.")
Since then Kikuchi has worked on several eye-catchiing international projects, including Rian Johnson's "The Brothers Bloom" (2008), French director Isabel Coixet's "Map of the Sounds of Tokyo" (2009) and Cellin Gluck's "Sideways" (2009), a word-for-word Japanese-language remake of the Alexander Payne wine-tasting film. "Norwegian Wood" (2010), Paris-based Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung's adaptation of the Haruki Murakami bestseller, won her some belated recognition in Asia, including a Best Actress nod at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.
Overseas, in other words, Kikuchi has become a go-to Japanese actress for hipster auteurs, and this must be partly a result of personal preference. The Japanese roles she's chosen, too, suggest a niche/art house sensibility: "A Forest With No Name" (2002), is one of director Shinji Aoyma's hard boiled parodies about tough private eye Maiku Hama, and Katsuhito Ishii's "The Taste of Tea" (2004) is a Bergman-esque family drama. "Assault Girls" (2009), a live action steampunk science fiction film by anime master Mamoru Oshii, is the closet thing on her resume to "Pacific Rim."
Beyoncé may be a very private person when it comes to her marriage to Jay-Z but the star has begun to open up about her superstar union, even sharing her sex fantasies in a new interview.

Madonna’s mystery video now has a name. The gritty dance/fashion film the singer shot with Steven Klein #secretproject video is part of a campaign to raise money for human rights causes through a new label inspired by old-school streetwear called Defend Paris. Madonna was among the first to wear a black and white screen-printed hoodie from its inaugural collection in May, featuring an assault rifle emblazoned in the center of the logo.
The singer’s boyfriend, Brahim Zaibat, is among a group behind the label, a cloak and dagger operation that has promoted itself with imagery utilizing gun violence as a narrative. For now, the Paris-based designers wish to remain anonymous. But a spokesperson for the collective says Zaibat will appear in ad imagery on Defend’s newly-launched website, which includes a lookbook and e-store of black and white hoodies, sweatshirts, tank tops, T-shirts and hats. The items, made in France, retail for 25-55€.
It's fun to debate whether a "song of the summer" is actually any good, but there's usually total agreement on what that song is.
It's the one you can't escape from — where every bar or club, every radio station you turn to, every party is playing it.
This year, it is unquestionably "Blurred Lines," also known as the song from the Radio Shack Commercial. It's already spent five weeks on the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and is in the top 30 on six other Billboard genre charts.
We wanted to go back and look at what were the most dominant summer songs of all time, as measured by ubiquity.
To do so, we looked at the songs that spent the most consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 (or its equivalent prior to that measure's advent). Some deranged Wikipedian laid out every single No. 1 song for every year going back to 1940. We started when summer songs became legit summer-y, in the mid-50s. For songs that spent equal amounts of consecutive weeks, we also looked at what other genre's charts they were shooting up.
We're defining summer as the span of a typical school summer break (the age at which you were most likely to be aware of the "summer song") — to qualify, it must have hit No. 1 (and stayed) at some point between May 15 and August 15, it made the cut.

It's not unusual to like an author's work and hate their political views or personality, but Orson Scott Card's vocal opposition to homosexuality has proved a sticking point for fans. With a film adaptation of Ender's Game coming out later this year, queer geek-focused organization Geeks Out has led a project called "Skip Ender's Game," urging moviegoers to boycott the film. Now, days before Ender's Game is showcased at San Diego Comic-Con, distributor Lionsgate is offering an olive branch. The company released a statement earlier today, calling Card's views on homosexuality "irrelevant" to the film and promising to hold a "benefit premiere" for LGBT groups.
Here's the statement, as published on Deadline:
As proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community, champions of films ranging from Gods and Monsters to The Perks of Being a Wallflower and a company that is proud to have recognized same-sex unions and domestic partnerships within its employee benefits policies for many years, we obviously do not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage. However, they are completely irrelevant to a discussion of Ender's Game. The simple fact is that neither the underlying book nor the film itself reflect these views in any way, shape or form.
On the contrary, the film not only transports viewers to an entertaining and action-filled world, but it does so with positive and inspiring characters who ultimately deliver an ennobling and life-affirming message. Lionsgate will continue its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community by exploring new ways we can support LGBT causes and, as part of this ongoing process, will host a benefit premiere for Ender's Game.

Oh come on. Oh come on. Oh come on. It's one of those phrases that can be meant at least three wildly disparate ways: inviting, incredulous, creepily bullying. Kathleen Hanna is as cagey with the words as her voice is sharply expressive on "Oh Come On," the first track from her upcoming debut album with the Julie Ruin. The nervy energy beckons us to be this uninhibited; cryptic barbs like "Make it popular / But still say it with a pout" land like sardonic (self?) mockery; the guy barking at us to get in the car now sounds like — well, imagine if some guy came up and barked at you to get in the car now.
The video, the first from the full-band incarnation of an alias Hanna used for a 1997 solo album, doesn't crack the song's urgently fragmentary code. It's mostly straight-up performance footage, interspersed with deadpan posed clips of the Bikini Kill-Le Tigre singer and her current crew. The space is just a small room, its white walls festooned with holiday lights strung up to spell out "the Julie Ruin." What a performance, though: fearless, writhing, wacky in the right places. In the end, there's a "fancy knife fight embrace," and you can't "get away," and everybody says "you didn't try." Hanna's take: "Oh come on." That guy barking at us toget in the car now, keyboard player Kenny Mellman, gets the gruff last words.
The Julie Ruin's Run Fast is due out on September 3 via the band's own TJR Records (distribution is being handled by Dischord). If you watched this video, you will probably want to check the Julie Ruin's tour dates.
What do you think of this song? It's closer to the Le Tigre sound than the old Julie Ruin songs.

In the new episode, Gideon, trying a new tactic to steal the Mystery Shack from Stan, summons an evil dream demon, like you do. In order to save Stan (and the Mystery Shack), the three somewhat-trepid heroes must journey into the uncharted world of his mind. Based on the description, it looks like one no fan of the show would want to miss. And, even cooler, tonight’s episode will end in a cliffhanger that you’ll have to wait three weeks to see resolved: on Friday, August 2, the story will conclude with “Gideon Rises,” which, according to Disney, “promises to reveal answers to many of Gravity Falls‘ deepest secrets.”
This was the only article I can find on this episode that wasn't AV Club, but it was so insane. This series in general is so smart and funny its a shame that it is underrated. Also I just want to say that I am in love with Bill Cipher now, here's to hoping that he is in the season finale as well (ugh why does it have to be a three week wait?)
The most surprising thing to me was that she's 29.

Since 2009's Inland Territory, Teng has been doing graduate work studying sustainability at the University of Michigan.
"I had this growing interest and passion in sustainability, and the places I dabbled in it on a volunteer basis left me feeling like I didn't really know anything about it and couldn't contribute to solving the problems until I devoted more of myself to it," says Teng, who first began releasing her music while studying computer science at Stanford University.
Teng's environmental studies also prompted what she considers a necessary shift in her creativity. "In a way, I went back to graduate school to fall in love with music again. I went away, then realized how deep a role music plays in my life to help me grapple with things and how to express things that normal conversation and written language just can't do."
The songs on the sampler — The Hymn of Acxiom, Close to Home and In the 99 — represent a triangulation of the music on Aims. While Teng is often associated with piano-based songs, two of these tracks don't even contain piano.

Kim Kardashian had her records "improperly accessed" by employees of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center who were subsequently fired for doing so TMZ has learned.
A report in the LA Times today said that six people were fired for privacy breaches involving the medical records of 14 patients from June 18-24. KK delivered her daughter on June 15 and checked out about a week later.
TMZ has learned that Kim was contacted by the hospital to let her know she was one of the patients who had her records accessed.
Our sources say the family suspected that information was leaking from the hospital after various media reports surfaced with certain information about the birth of her daughter North that she hadn't told anyone.
We're told Kim was glad the hospital contacted her and is happy that action was taken against the workers.

Cara Delevingne poses with owls for Mulberry’s fall ad campaign inspired by the English countryside.
Women's Wear Daily reports that the campaign was shot on location at an 18th century house in Oxfordshire, England, by Tim Walker and art directed by Ronnie Cooke Newhouse. The ads will break in the August issues of British Vogue and Condé Nast Traveler.
Delevingne, 20, poses with Mulbery’s new Willow tote in the ads, but she told Grazia that she now wants a Mulberry bag named after her.“Traditional fables, botanical prints and the earthiness of the countryside by night all played their part, and this sense of dark beauty was beautifully captured by Tim and Ronnie for the campaign.”
“My favourite Mulberry bag would be the Cara bag…actually that hasn’t been made yet!” she said.
“I want to design a Mulberry bag, there needs to be a Cara bag. I have so many ideas, Mulberry need to call me. And they have to let me design trainers too!”
She also gushed about how much she loves Mulberry.
“Mulberry is such an iconic brand - it’s British, and I love the bags and clothes,” she said.
“Plus the campaigns are inspiring - they have a tradition of working with such cool models and creative teams. Tim Walker shot this campaign - it’s not the first time I’ve worked with Tim - but it is my first campaign for Mulberry and I really admire his work. He’s an artist, a great visionary, so I was very happy to find out I was shooting with him again. “
She added that she posed with real owls — which caused some problems.
“It was an amazing shoot - I got to shoot with owls!” she said. “I love working with animals and especially owls. The best moments were when all the owls kept poo-ing on me - there was a real problem with poo on this shoot!”

Kim Kardashian is fed up with hiding out at mother Kris Jenner’s house and wants to show off her new baby. The reality star is said to be “sick of being in hiding” at her mother Kris Jenner’s house. Kim has been living with Kris since giving birth prematurely to her daughter on June 15.
“Kim is excited to have the whole world see her baby,” a source told Radar Online. “She is saying that she knows that everyone will love her as much as she does and she wants people to see how beautiful she is.”
Kim has not been seen out in public since the baby was born and has spent nearly a month bonding with her new little girl. Sources say the 32-year-old Keeping Up with the Kardashians star is torn between the wishes of her boyfriend Kanye West and mother Kris.
Her partner wants to keep their family life private but her parent wants to show her to the world. The spotlight-loving star is reportedly nearing a deal to sell the first photographs of baby North. Kim now wants fans to share her happiness, according to the insider.
“Kim has been cooped up and she is really torn because she wants to show off the baby,” the source declared. “She is dying for people to see how cute she is. She’s saying she is sick of being in hiding. She loves spending every single second with the baby, but she wants her fans to see how adorable she is.”

Halle Berry is a bride once more.
The expectant Oscar-winner, 46, wed French film star Olivier Martinez, 47, Saturday at the Chateau des Conde in Vallery, France, reports the French website Pure People.
The ceremony took place in a small chateau, where, in accordance with French law, a civil union was held (at 4 p.m.), followed by a religious ceremony at 5:30 at the chapel in the village.
Among the 60 people, mostly close friends, in attendance were the groom's mother Rosemarie and brother Vincent. Dinner was held under an arbor, and there was a fireworks display.
In April, the couple revealed they're expecting their first child together – a boy – early this fall, an unexpected joy Berry has called "the biggest surprise of my life." The baby will join big sister Nahla, Berry's daughter with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubrey. Martinez infamously slugged Berry's ex last Thanksgiving after Aubrey reportedly attacked him while dropping off Nahla for the holiday.
This marks Berry's third trip down the aisle. She was previously married to baseball player David Justice in the early 1990s and to singer Eric Benét in the early 2000s.
This is a first marriage for Martinez, who previously dated singer Kylie Minogue.
I confess, as someone who doesn’t watch ABC Family (the programming is a bit “young” for me much of the time), the show “Twisted” was not on my radar. However, if you are looking for extremely swirl-friendly entertainment, this is probably THE most black woman, especially black teen, swirl-friendly show on TV.
A bit about the show:
The new ABC Family original mystery series Twisted centers on a charismatic 16-year-old with a troubled past, who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood. He becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is surprisingly found dead in her home.
Now, admittedly what drew my interest was a combination of the mystery and the treatment of the character of Lacey Porter, played by Kylie Bunbury.
While I do have issues with the show, such as some of the acting and the fact that the town sheriff is as dumb as a box of rocks, I was very happy to have happened upon this show for a few reasons:
1.) Lacey is NOT a side-kick or just the black friend set up to support her white BFF, whom is typically at the center of the love triangle.
Instead, she is at the center of her own love triangle between her boyfriend Archie and the male lead, Danny. Raise your hand if you can remember the last time a black girl was at the center of fisticuffs between non-blacks guys on television. I can’t really remember myself so I’ll say I’ve certainly never seen it. There is very much a tug of war going on for her affections and I imagine it’s only going to get more intense as the show progresses.

Dakota Fanning and her sister Elle are officially grown up. A new ad campaign for the South Korean jewelry brand J.Estina has many fashion critics praising the Fanning sisters for pulling off a sophisticated look that is beyond their years.
Elle and Dakota, who have already had some great fashion success with brands like Marc Jacobs and Radarte, became the faces of the Korean jewelry brand J.Estina earlier this year. The Summer ads were released a few months ago but now we’re getting a look at the fall collection.
Elle and Dakota Fanning can be seen wearing pearls, buttoned up suits, and carrying fancy handbags in the new ad.
OMG writes: “It’s like they skipped their 20s. Instead of young Hollywood stars, we see mature businesswomen — or ladies who lunch… It’s almost as if she’s posing for cover of Forbes’s “Most Powerful Women” issue.”
E! Online adds: “The siblings prove they’ve come a long way from their start as child stars…. Looking oh-so-sophisticated in pearls from the handbag and jewelry brand, the darling duo pose alongside one another, with Elle in a chic white suit and Dakota in a sharp square-neck dress.”
Elle, 15, and Dakota, 19, have been in the spotlight since they were kids (much younger kids). Dakota had starred alongside actors like Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, and Robert De Niro before her 13th birthday and Elle made her motion picture debut while she was still in her crib.
The two Fanning sisters could have easily gone the way of cautionary tales like Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan but the girls have kept their act together over the years.
And now, as evidence by their J.Estina campaign, they can pull off a look that is “beyond their years.”
Here are some photos from the new photoshoot. Are you a fan of Elle and Dakota Fanning?

The Human Rights Foundation is not happy with Jennifer Lopez, who drew the ire of several human rights groups last month when she gave a paid performance at the birthday party of Turkmenistan's repressive leader, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov. At the time, Lopez's publicist Mark Young apologized and claimed that "had there been knowledge of human rights issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended," but HRF president Thor Halvorssen contends that "the 'Jenny-from-the-block-who-doesn't-Goo
Halvorssen pointed to a $1 million July 2011 appearance Lopez made at the wedding of the son of Uzbek industrialist Azam Aslamov, whose guests included Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov (Hilary Swank got in trouble for attending his birthday party in 2011.) Lopez is also said to have been paid $1.4 million to perform at the Moscow birthday party of corrupt Russian businessman Telman Ismailov. In 2012, she accepted $2.5 from the dictatorship of Azerbaijan to perform at a soccer tournament and, later that year, she was set to sing a $2 million "Happy Birthday" to allegedly corrupt Russian bureaucrat Alexander Yolkin, though the gig was canceled because Yolkin got arrested the day before the event. (Whether Lopez got to keep the money isn't known.) Lopez's representatives have not commented on the nonprofit's criticism of their client, possibly because they're finally doing a more thorough Goolging of any upcoming overseas commitments.
Being famous always comes with a price, and it usually involves some rumors and lies being told about you.
Kris Jenner has had it up to here with the tabloids and gossip magazines spreading lies about her and her family, and she's speaking out against them.
In an interview with the Associated Press, the momager of the Kardashian family talked about how she feels about tabloids.
She told the outlet:
“Tabloids will print any lie to sell a magazine."
”I used to give people I didn’t know out there reading this stuff a lot more credit. I used to think, ‘Who would believe this?’”
Kris described that she feels "frustrated" after constantly dealing with lies and gossip being spread about her family.
Well, Kris might have a good chance at controlling the rumors herself being that her talk show Kris is coming on in the next few months. It's a great place where she can speak the truth!

The other day, I posted about Leonardo DiCaprio’s Fourth of July party at his home in the Hollywood Hills. Photos from inside his house ended up on Instagram, including shots of his current model girlfriend Toni Garrn. Click here for a refresher. At the time, I wondered about how Leo’s relationships with the Twitter youth would affect his ability to guard his privacy – as we’ve seen over the years, he does so obsessively.
Later that day, I received a request to have the pictures taken down. I guess Daddy Leo came home and told the kids to stop f-cking around. At the risk of sounding prosaic, it’s like he’s playing whack-a-mole. You shut down one tweet but can you shut down every tweet?
Click here to see a photo of Leo that went up on Instagram a little over a week ago from an account belonging to Kristine Froseth, a model, obviously. She’s around 18, maybe 19. In the picture, she’s tagged someone called Milano Johnson. And of course you can see Leo’s there, with Garrn, who just turned 21, and they’re at a restaurant eating 13 courses. Jonah Johnson is one of Leo’s OGs and his personal chef. He was recently profiled in the LA Times. Click here to read the article. Milano then would be his…son? Also about 18 years old, I think.
So… dinner on Uncle Leo!

Even by tiny celebrity standards, Selena Gomez is of practically Borrower proportions. Before we meet, we pass in the hotel lobby, and I assume she is someone's nine-year-old daughter until a small clatter of BlackBerry jockeys sweeps behind her. Ask a pre-teen, however, and they'll tell you Gomez is one of the biggest stars in the world. With 15.6m Twitter followers, millions in album sales, tens of millions in box office dollars and countless headlines as the on-off girlfriend of Justin Bieber, she is one of the most successful of the Disney Channel alumni. Not the comparatively ancient generation that once produced Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling and Christina Aguilera, but the new breed, who are primped and propagated like prize roses; toothy munchkins given TV shows and then slapped on backpacks, pencil cases and, if they can carry a tune without significant wobble, album covers. Gomez has appeared in 106 episodes of Wizards of Waverly Place (a show about magically gifted kids which aired on Disney) and released three albums with her band the Scene. She will shortly turn 21.

Writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, the Harry Potter creator ghostwrote a 450-page crime novel called The Cuckoo’s Calling.
The book is billed as a “classic crime novel”, written in the style of P. D. James and Ruth Rendell, according to the Sunday Times
Its plot centres of the death of a troubled model who falls to her death from a snow-covered Mayfair balcony. Her brother calls in Cormoran Strike, a damaged war veteran turned private investigate, to her death.
Released in April, the book has generated heated speculation about the identity of the book’s author.
The secret could not last. Eventually it was noticed that Mr Galbraith and Miss Rowling shared the same publisher and editor.
Reviewers have described it as an “exhilarating debut” and marvelled at how a male author could ever describe women’s clothes so well.
When approached this weekend, Miss Rowling said: “I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer because being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience. It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name.”
The book is described as “a gripping, elegant mystery steeped in the atmosphere of London – from the hushed streets of Mayfair to the backstreet pubs of the East End to the bustle of Soho.”
After writing seven Harry Potter books, Miss Rowling published her first fiction for adults last year. The Casual Vacancy, a novel about a small town racked with political infighting, sold well but received a mixed response from critics.
Book Post! Have you read this book?
Somewhere in between enjoying fun in the sun, Beyonce found time for something very dear to her. The singer took a moment to wish a happy birthday to Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot by the Taliban for attending classes, and urging education back in October 2012.

Not my fave cover of hers but I love when they sing together.
“Pacific Rim” landed in second place Friday with $14.6 million, which is about the best it can expect to do this weekend as it gets overtaken by a critically-smeared sequel and a beloved toon holdover.
Warner Bros.’ and Legendary Pictures’ giant-robot-meets-giant-monster actioner started the frame strongly with a higher-than-expected $3.6 million from late Thursday showings and an 11th hour spike in advance ticket sales — a typical early turnout for fanboy-driven pics. However, even this modest momentum doesn’t appear as though it will hold, as the $185 million-plus budgeted pic looks like it will fall to third place around $38 million on Sunday.

I had one of those electrifying moments watching TV last year. I was watching a scene in which the actor was knocking me out -- so much so that I felt compelled to do an IMDB check to find out whose work I was admiring.
The episode I was watching was the season 3 premiere of LOUIE, and the actor -- who seemed very familiar to me -- was Gaby Hoffmann. The same Gaby Hoffmann who was so memorable as a young actor in FIELD OF DREAMS, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE and UNCLE BUCK.
Gaby has already been on set for several days of shooting, and she's been absolutely brilliant as new character Ruby Jetson. I have an incredible eye for spotting talent that much more successful and talented people discovered 20 years earlier.
(Just this week The New York Times Magazine ran a fascinating feature about Gaby's life and career.)

Glad to see the James Franco role is only a cameo. I think that's where my excitement level went to a 9, but then the next day it was back to an 11. ;)
She's supposedly playing a suspect in the murder of Logan's girlfriend, so we'll see.

How was your Friday night, ONTD? Are you doing anything fun tonight or tomorrow?
The verdict hasn't been read yet.
The jury returned a not guilty verdict. George Zimmerman will be freed shortly.
George Zimmerman has just been found NOT GUILTY.
thanks zydratee and queengreen for this. The NAACP has a petition to have a civil rights charge brought against Mr. Zimmerman. This is the same route that eventually brought Rodney King some justice. Please consider signing this if you wish to see justice for Trayvon Martin.
My own editorial comment: this is such a tragedy. Not even a manslaughter conviction.
Also- if you have a link or something you think should be incorporated into this post, please put OP in your subject so I catch it. Will do my best to keep up.
I'll update as the news conference happens... Or anyone have more info on this.

In director Cullen Hoback’s “Terms And Conditions May Apply,” he seems to be dealing with several issues, some political, some social, none all that clear. Of course, he’s diving into the morass of conflicts between capitalism and politics, an unholy marriage that acts as a cultural ouroborous for anyone who wants to offer a serious probe, so perhaps his hands are tied almost immediately. But the mission statement seems to involve asking questions towards what we’ve accepted all along. Documentaries should be discussed as films, not as cautionary announcements. But even at its sloppiest, it’s important a film like this exists, even if it strictly plays to the chin-stroking dreadlocked liberal in the third row who can’t stop admiring their own exquisite hemp pants.
