If former “X Factor” girl group Fifth Harmony are looking for some advice as they record their debut album, they should look no further than Little Mix, the foursome that won the U.K. version of “X Factor” in 2011.
Little Mix hit the ground running after their win and dropped their own debut album, DNA, overseas last year, launching several singles in the process. So they certainly have some sage wisdom to share with their U.S. counterparts (who placed third back last fall).
“Just to be themselves, really be confident and just love what you do,” Jesy Nelson told MTV News about the wisdom she’d offer the ladies. “We saw them [and] we think they’re amazing. They’re really, really good. So, yeah, just keep doing what they’re doing I guess.”
5H are in the studio now and confirmed earlier this week that they hope to drop new music in the “next few months.” But, it was only last year that Little Mix was in the lab working on their debut album, set for release in the States in May.
“You don’t know how it’s going to happen, do you?” Perrie Edwards said, describing the pre-studio feeling she got for DNA. “You don’t know what’s waiting for you when you get there and it’s a whole new, different situation.”
“Especially when you’re on ‘X Factor,’ you do so many covers. And when you come off it, you’ve got to find your sound, what you’re about,” Nelson added. “But it’s exciting. It’s quite scary at the same time. But it’s fun and we loved every minute of writing our album.”
However, what fans hear on DNA didn’t happen overnight. It was a process that 5H should get ready for. Leigh-Anne Pinnock explained, “Well we knew what we wanted to do, but it was about finding it. Nothing was right until we heard [our debut single] ‘Wings’ and it was like ‘Yes! We found it!’ We went on from there, really.”
So, what should the ladies expect until they find that perfect career-defining anthem? Well, anything.
“When you start,” Perrie recalled, “… the world’s your oyster.”
