Finding Vivian Maier trailer

Vivian Maier's photos were seemingly destined for obscurity, lost among the clutter of the countless objects she'd collected throughout her life. Instead these images have shook the world of street photography and irrevocably changed the life of the man who brought them to the public eye.

This film brings to life the interesting turns and travails of the improbable saga of John Maloof's discovery of Vivian Maier, unraveling this mysterious tale through her documentary films, photographs, odd collections and personal accounts from the people that knew Vivian.

What started as a blog to show her work quickly became a viral sensation in the photography world. Photos destined for the trash heap now line gallery exhibitions, a forthcoming book, and this documentary film.

I can't wait to see this!!!

Crawley Girls: A Downton Abbey Mixtape

The season finale of Downton Abbey is upon us (say it ain't so)! Once you get used to gasping at Ms. O'Brien's latest trickery, groaning at any scene involving boring ol' Bates, or aww-ing over anything Daisy does or says, it's time to say goodbye again. But let's put wallowing on hold for now and instead take a musical journey through the evolution of the Crawley girls! (Note: Cora not included due to her being a bore). Oh, and, if you aren't caught up with the show, I wouldn't read this 'cause there are HELLA SPOILERS.

Drake gets denied entry to a nightclub... because Chris Brown was inside.

Chris Brown and Drake ... one Hollywood nightclub ain't big enough for the both of 'em -- because TMZ has learned, Drake was turned away at the door this week because Brown was already inside.

The club is Playhouse in Hollywood -- and sources tell TMZ, bouncers sent Drake on his way Wednesday night because CB was already partying at a table inside ... and they wanted to avoid any possible brawl scenarios.

According to sources, Brown was inside the club celebrating an anniversary party for some clothing brand called Popular Demand.

The bouncers were aware Chris was inside when Drake showed up around midnight ... and they knew Rihanna would be joining him later on ... so they asked Drake to party somewhere else that night.

The promoters -- and the nightclub -- obviously wanted to avoid what happened at W.i.P. nightclub last summer ... when Chris and Drake's entourage nearly destroyed the place with flying bottles.

We're told Drake handled the rejection like a gentleman and left without incident.

Michael Jordan took over the NBA's All Star Weekend in Houston when he went all out for his 50th Birthday Celebration in Texas.

The 6 time NBA champion shelled out $100,000 to throw his birthday party at the Museum of Fine Arts, in Houston and the 100k donation was well worth it, because everyone came out to support the greatest player to ever touch a basketball.

The X-Files: 10 Stars Before They Hit The Big Time

 photo luke_zps5c955440.jpg

It’s now been over 10 years since agents Mulder and Scully last graced our screens in their search for the truth. With a show spanning 202 episodes (that’s 55 discs if you’re lucky enough to have the box set), we were invited to join Mulder’s investigation into his sister’s disappearance and Scully’s journey from skeptic to believer. With episodes covering aliens, vampires, parasites and the occult, we would be introduced to enough conspiracy theories and unbalanced characters to give Fox News a run for their money.

As with many TV shows of our youth, the nostalgic enjoyment that comes with re-experiencing something you grew up with now includes the added spotter’s-badge bonus of a casual, fresh faced appearance by someone who would later hit the big time. You’d be casually following the story as it unfolds . . . then you see Dave Grohl checking his watch in the background.

Strictly speaking, our dearest Dave can’t be included in this run-down due to the fact that he was the drummer for one of the biggest bands in the world at the time, so you wouldn’t really class him as an “unknown”. The same could be said for Bruce Campbell (“Terms of Endearment” 1999) and Peter Boyle (“Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” 1995).

These guys on the other hand . . .

HBO renewed Girls for three seasons but was gonna reject the Beyonce documentary?!

HBO wasn't always interested in bringing Beyonce's documentary "Life Is But A Dream" to the small screen. In fact, it turns out that it took the pop star's management team six weeks to convince higher ups at HBO to pick up the project.

"I have no clue why this works," HBO's President of Programming Michael Lombardo tells the New York Daily News. "If someone said to me, 'Why is this on HBO?' I can't say why -- this isn't a traditional documentary and this isn't a traditional music special because there something undeniably moving and honest about it."

He continues, "I knew who Beyoncé was, but I wasn't really a fan. If you had asked me to name more than one of her songs at that point I couldn't."

That all changed when Beyonce's team hand delivered a copy of the film to Lombardo and watched it with him in HBO's screening room. After that, "Life Is But A Dream" topped HBO's "must have" list.
"This, felt so fresh and honest to me," Lombardo says. "She's constantly walking this line between public performer and private person, and wrestling with how, in this massive spotlight, she can hold onto the part of yourself that makes you real. It's such an honest struggle and such an honest conversation."

He adds, "I was also dazzled by how hard she works, the unbelievable, unsexy, hard, sweaty work that goes into mounting a show -- any show she does. You just have to take you hat off to her."
Fans will find out what convinced Lombardo to change his mind when "Life Is But A Dream" debuts on HBO on Feb. 16.

A Conversation With Rihanna's Hair Stylist Ursula Stephen

"Hair brings one's self image into focus; it is vanity's proving ground. Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices." -- Shana Alexander, American journalist

Celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen cried as we talked about... hair. It caught me off guard as I hadn't considered the possibility of tears during an interview about celebrity cuts and color. What I discovered however, was that Ursula was a woman who was not only well-versed in the mechanics of her craft, but acutely aware its profound social, cultural and political significance. Barely speaking through her tears, we talked about her trip to South Africa where she worked with women of color whose natural hair texture was almost unrecognizable -- marred by years of improper relaxers, no conditioner and an incessant desire to manipulate their hair into straight, Anglo-inspired styles. As she ran her fingers through the hair of women who knew virtually nothing about how to care for their own hair, she understood that their dry, brittle strands were vestiges of their apartheid past. Their hair whispered stories of their history; and Ursula was moved to tears by what she heard.

Despite the fact that Elle magazine has lauded her as "hair royalty," Ursula Stephen remains remarkably humble and painstakingly human. She's yet to allow herself to become jaded or disconnected from the essence of her craft in a haze of global jet setting with one of the biggest popstars on the planet. Her two Vogue covers with Rihanna haven't rendered all else unimportant. She remains firmly grounded -- using her talent as a conduit to help women feel beautiful, empowered and recognize better versions of themselves. From those uncovering their identity soaked in layers of racial injustice, to a pop-princess asserting her power as an icon, Ursula remains equally inspired.

Below are excerpts from my conversation with Ursula Stephen, who proves that in her industry, style does not always trump substance.

Comic-Con badges sell out in under 2 hours

Saturday's online sale for admission to this year's Comic-Con left fans both jubilant and frustrated, as all four-day and single-day badges sold out in under two hours.

The online purchase process began at 9 a.m. and within minutes many would-be purchasers were informed of the grim news: the "online waiting room has reached capacity and it is unlikely that badges are still available."

Within less than an hour, all of the four-day badges for the July convention were gone.

Last year, all tickets to the pop culture extravaganza sold out in a record one hour and 20 minutes. Saturday's sellout took roughly one hour and 40 minutes. Organizers, while they would like to accommodate more fans, have said they long ago outgrew the capacity of the city's downtown convention center.

Ugh I'm so mad I wasn't even able to get any tickets let alone getting inside the waiting room, but I still haven't lost hope yet, pretty much crossing my fingers for the resale!

Watch the Trailer for NBC's 'Hannibal'

Nom-nom-nom, Dr. Hannibal Lecter is back.

Below is the first trailer for NBC’s upcoming drama series that takes on the most popular non-supernatural serial killer in American movie history. This is a cool short tease. The clip includes one of the most darkly playful exchanges from showrunner Bryan Fuller’s pilot script — FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy): “I don’t find you that interesting.” Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen): “You will.” Also, like the Hannibal title font.

This trailer makes its on-air debut tonight during Saturday Night Live (Django Unchained star Christoph Waltz is the host). The thriller will premiere Thursday, April 4 at 10 p.m. Scroll down for your first look….

Marianne Faithfull being flawless and talking about fashion, the 60s and current life

Despite being the emodiment of sexiness in the 60s, Marianne Faithfull never really liked modelling. It's taken decades, but now she finally feels comfortable in her skin.

Marianne Faithfull was one of the most photographed women in the world during her youth. With her angelic English looks and long legs, she was the physical embodiment of the sexiest part of the 1960s, particularly when draped around the rock stars who made up her circle of lovers (Brian Jones, Mick Jagger) and friends (George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan). But, in fact, she never much liked modelling. "God no," she says in her filthily smoky voice. "I never saw myself as beautiful. I can look back and see it now, but then? Never."Collapse )

Zachary Quinto Talks A Darker ‘Star Trek,’ J.J. Abrams’ Decision to Direct ‘Star Wars’ and More

Zachary Quinto, who returns to the role of Spock in J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS — due in theaters this May — recently discussed portraying such an iconic character, the future of Star Trek and his thoughts on Abrams’ choice to direct the next Star Wars film in a recent interview with Huffington Post.

Quinto spoke about returning to the role of Spock in the Star Trek sequel and the pressure to deliver a performance worthy of the iconic role made famous by Leonard Nimoy in the 1960s.

I never felt any pressure from being a part of that franchise, I only felt supported and I only felt supported and I have only felt like my job is to get to work and be a part of something that people want to watch and want to see. That certainly was the case the first time around and I think it will be more the case this time, because it is such a bigger experience we shot this movie in 3D and IMAX and I think the story just lends itself to much more of an explosion onto the summer movie schedule scene. I am just really excited to get it out there and share it with people and I don’t feel any particular individual pressure to doing anything other than my job and my job is already done I shot it in the first half of 2012, so I’ve been done for awhile and now the responsibility is in everybody else’s hands to bring it all to life. J.J. [Abrams] is just a genius and everybody who works around him is incredibly talented at what they do, so I feel like people won’t be disappointed, that is certainly my hope.

He went on to discuss the STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS trailer and its darker theme than was seen in the 2009 Star Trek film.

Yeah, darker, bigger and there’s just more at stake for everybody. So, I think that’s exciting for an audience.

NYT reviews Beyonce's 'Life Is but a Dream'

Another Cog in the Machinery of Divahood

There are plenty of great performers who can be likened to Beyoncé, but Nina Simone isn’t one of them.

Diana Ross, Madonna and Whitney Houston all come to mind. Yet Simone, a pained chanteuse in exile with a cult following and only one Top 20 hit (“I Loves You, Porgy”), is the sole predecessor Beyoncé mentions in “Beyoncé: Life Is but a Dream,” an autobiographical documentary on HBO on Saturday night. Beyoncé is the star and also its executive producer, narrator, co-writer and co-director.

“I think when Nina Simone put out music, you loved her voice,” Beyoncé says in the program. “That’s what she wanted you to love. That’s what — that was her instrument.” She refers to a simpler time in the recording industry but glosses over Simone’s very public profile in the civil rights movement. “But you didn’t get brainwashed by her day-to-day life and what her child is wearing and who she’s dating and, you know, all the things that really — it’s not your business, you know? And it shouldn’t influence the way you listen to the voice and the art. But it does.”

Larenz Tate Talks To S&A About His Upcoming Debut On 'House of Lies' w/ Don Cheadle

"Where in the world is Larenz Tate?"

I’d be rich if I was paid money every time I heard that question. There’s no doubt that he has many loyal fans and supporters around the globe.

However, if truth be told, as of late, we have not seen a lot of him on screen - at the theater, or on TV.

Well, ahead of his debut on Showtime’s “House of Lies” this Sunday, February 17, 2013, Shadow and Act knew exactly where Larenz Tate was; and this afternoon we caught up with him and chatted very briefly about his debut on “House of Lies”, his friendship with Don Cheadle, and other current directing projects.

Shadow and Act: Congrats on your new “House of Lies” role. For our readers that do not know a lot about the show can you tell us about it?
Larenz Tate: The tagline behind “House of Lies” is funny, dirty, business. The show is a comedy satire about how big business operates. Most Americans that work in corporate America should be able to relate to this show. In the series, Don’s character is in the thick of everything. He’s the guy that is known for pushing the envelope along with his POD (his group).

Shadow and Act: Can you tell us about your character, “Malcolm”?
LT: I play Don’s character’s younger brother. We are polar opposites. We have a long history of sibling rivalry. Malcolm is a guy that is about the people. He is a dude that’s fighting against Wall Street. He is an occupy Wall Street kind of guy. He is about organizing the people against the corrupt system. The thing is he’s against the same people that Don’s character works with. So that’s a problem. Don’s character looks at himself as an over achiever and my character as an under achiever. Everybody likes my character. My character does not hold down a regular job.

Max Whitlock Post

Gymnast Max Whitlock is one of seven young British athletes the Daily Mail has chosen to follow in their journey to the Olympics in 2016.

Where are you from?
I was born in Hemel Hempstead and I still live there now but I train in Basildon in Essex. I live with my parents and I’ve got an older brother Ben who is a landscape gardener.

Tell us about your sport...
I’m a gymnast. I started doing it aged seven. When I was nine I was put into a squad and it’s moved on from there. I do all six disciplines but the pommel horse is my best and favourite.

What were you doing during London 2012?
I was competing and I won two bronze medals — in the team event and pommel horse. I wasn’t expecting to win anything but to be part of the first British team to win a gymnastics medal in 100 years was amazing. I haven’t really done anything special yet with my medals — they are just on the sofa at home!

Who was your hero growing up?
I really didn’t have one. I didn’t even have posters on my walls, nothing. I know that is unusual.

What are your dreams and hope for Rio 2016?
Getting there will be tough. There were 15 of us going for five places in London and it will be more now. Assuming I do, I want to get medals in the pommel and all-round.

Tell us something interesting about yourself...
I swam a lot when I was young and had to pick between that and gymanstics when I was nine.

Batman: Arkham ______ Possibly coming in the next few months?

The Batman: Arkham series is one of the best selling and arguably one of the most critically acclaimed franchises in the entirety of the DC Universe. It makes sense that Warner Bros. Interactive would want to keep The Dark Knight in the spotlight and many wonder how a continuation of the series would be possible due to the very controversial ending of Batman: Arkham City.

Warner Bros. hinted at a new title back in January after registering Batman-themed domain names, and there have been rumors circulating that Rocksteady, the original Arkham series developers, won’t have a hand in the latest installment. After all, it was Warner Bros. Studios in Montreal and Burbank who were responsible for porting Arkham City to the Wii U (read our review)last year and if the latest job postings are of any indication, the Montreal developer may be behind the Batman: Arkham threequel.

New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow is scheduled to speak at a megachurch in Dallas whose pastor has spoken out against Muslims, Jews, Mormons and members of the LGBT community.

Tebow is listed as a special guest at one of the First Baptist Church's morning services on April 28, according to its website.

The church is led by Evangelical pastor Robert Jeffress, who has previously denounced non-Christian religions such as Islam, Judaism and Mormonism. Leading up to the most recent presidential election, Jeffress warned parishioners that re-electing President Barack Obama would "lead to the rise of the Antichrist," according to The Christian Post. While denouncing the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," Jeffress also declared that 70 percent of the gay population has AIDS, and referred to it as "a gay disease," according to ThinkProgress.org.

Tebow has made no secret of the fact that he's a devout Christian, but has shied away from taking a stance on controversial social issues.

What do you think of Tebow speaking at the church?

Don't call Lena Dunham "brave"

Girls creator and star Lena Dunham is debatably the most significant figure currently working in television (itself a medium that is rapidly overtaking film in social relevance), as well as 26 years old, female, and famously inclined to take off her clothes on-camera despite having a frankly fairly normal body type. In Hollywood, where gender politics are stuck somewhere in the mid-twentieth century, like pretty much every other major industry, it is as uncommon for a young woman to occupy positions of power as it is for people who are not super skinny to get naked. This week’s episode of Girls, with its explicit depiction of her character Hannah’s sexual fling with Patrick Wilson, an older man who has invited comparisons to a Ken doll, sparked a vitriolic social-media and critical debate over whether their coupling was believable; in defending her, the pro-Dunham side often used a nonsense superlative that is nearly always reflexively applied when her supporters describe her frequent nudity: brave.

Beyonce Documentary Quotes: Lessons We Learned From 'Life Is But A Dream'

Just when we thought Beyonce couldn't do anything more to secure her title as the reigning Queen of Pop and all things excellent, she went ahead and made a documentary.

"Beyonce: Life Is But A Dream," an autobiographical, self-produced film starring, you guessed it, Beyonce, premiered on February 16th on HBO.

Of course there were elements of the ridiculous: Bey pensively holding a hairdryer (wasn't that a camera???) on a Paris balcony, random prolonged shots of trees, pretty much no one speaking but Beyonce and the revelation that the singer has had a videographer filming her 24/7 for years. Still, we couldn't help but enjoy the glimpse into the pop star's -- and her 1-year-old daughter Blue Ivy's -- life.

Here are eight five lessons we took away from Queen Bey's documentary:
