Why Tumblr Fandoms Are Like Internet Poets

"My daughter has been acting strange the past few months," wrote a parent n Yahoo Answers recently. "She's always on this website called Tumbler. ... Sometimes she says strange things like "my feels" or "my cries." ... Yesterday she was crying because of shipping. Is shipping some kind of drug term or a cult? I don't want my daughter involved in negative things like this."

Don't worry, was the general consensus of respondents to the worried father. Your daughter's not in a cult — she's just in fandom.

MGM planning Ben-Hur remake

After nearly folding due to bankruptcy just a few years ago, MGM Studios is back and better than ever, after the success of Skyfall and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The studio is gearing up to take on what may be their most ambitious project yet, a remake of the 1959 classic Ben-Hur.

The studio has acquired a spec screenplay by Keith R. Clarke (The Way Back), which is much more faithful to the 1880 novel by Lew Wallace. While director William Wyler's Ben-Hur focused on the feud between Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and Messalla (Stephen Boyd), this film will explore the characters' formative years, growing up as best friends before the Roman Empire conquered Jerusalem.

This script also features Jesus Christ, who encounters Ben-Hur and whose tale is told in parallel to the title character. Ben-Hur begins to believe that Christ is the Messiah, before the savior is killed by Pontius Pilate.

Sean Daniel and Joni Levin are attached to produce. No production schedule has been released.
Ben-Hur was released November 18th, 1959 and stars Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Haya Harareet, Stephen Boyd, Hugh Griffith, Martha Scott, Cathy O'Donnell, Sam Jaffe. The film is directed by William Wyler.

so ONTD, who do you think should reprise the iconic role of Judah Ben-Hur?

Defending Taylor Swift

I've finally reached my breaking point. LEAVE BRITNEY TAYLOR ALONE.

To give you some background, it seems that people are especially mad at T Swizzle this month. They are upset with her for many reasons, like ostensibly being asexual, having an out-of-control interest in antique shopping, dating too many men, and not being sufficiently feminist. Let me repeat. Asexual. Antique shopping. Too many men. Anti-feminist.

Collapse )

*I don't fully agree that Taylor is some kind of feminist role model, because she doesn't label herself as one.  However, I do find that some of the critiques of her and her music are very telling.  Criticizing Taylor Swift for her life choices says more about those criticizing her than it does about Taylor.

Ray Liotta, Juno Temple & Jeremy Piven Join Robert Rodriguez's 'Sin City: A Dame To Kill For'

2013 could prove to be the year of Robert Rodriguez. The prolific filmmaker has always been uber-productive, but this year, we'll get a double dose: he'll have two films hit theaters a month apart of each other. The first, "Machete Kills" will land in theaters on September 13th via Open Road and and then four weeks later, Dimension Films' "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" will follow. And with cameras rolling on the highly anticipated follow-up to "Sin City," three more actors have joined the cast.

Sources close to the production have confirmed to The Playlist that Ray Liotta, Juno Temple and Jeremy Piven have all come on board the picture. Details on their characters are being kept under wraps for now, but the trio join some very good company. 'A Dame To Kill For' is chalk full of talent, including original cast members Mickey Rourke as Marv, Jessica Alba as Nancy, Rosario Dawson as Gail and Jaime King as Goldie/Wendy and newcomers to the fold Josh Brolin as Dwight (replacing Clive Owen), Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny, Dennis Haysbert as Manute (replacing the late Michael Clarke Duncan) and Jamie Chung as Miho. Production is already underway at Rodriguez’s always busy Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Liotta is on a bit of a comeback, fresh off roles in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly" and Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines," which audiences will be able to see in the spring. He'll also soon be seen in "The Iceman" opposite Michael Shannon and Olivier Megaton's "Into The Americas." Temple is coming off "The Dark Knight Rises," has "The Brass Teapot" on the way and will be seen in three Sundance films this week: "Afternoon Delight," "Magic Magic" with Michael Cera and "Lovelace" starring Amanda Seyfried. She also has upcoming roles on the horizon in "Maleficent" starring Angelina Jolie and "Horns" with Daniel Radcliffe. Meanwhile, Piven has been busy with his new series "Mr. Selfridge," which is now airing in the U.K. and will hit American TV screens via PBS later this year.

"Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" arrives in theaters on October 4th.

6th Graders Need Their Lunch Money Too!

Rapper Chief Keef: Sued for Child Support----BY A MIDDLE SCHOOLER

17-year-old rapper Chief Keef is already getting a head start on his baby mama drama -- in fact, he's so far ahead of the game ... he allegedly impregnated a girl who's STILL IN MIDDLE SCHOOL ... and now, she's suing for child support. The girl filed the petition for child support in Chicago, claiming Keef -- real name Keith Cozart -- fathered a baby daughter with her back in 2011.

The girl's exact age is unclear, but according to the docs, she currently attends a Chicago middle school -- meaning she was .. at MOST ... in 8th grade when she conceived the child, but could have been in 6th grade. Cozart -- who has since worked with Kanye West, Young Jeezy, and Rick Ross -- was 15 at the time.

In Illinois, it is considered a misdemeanor for two people under the age of 17 to have sex ... even if they're in a consensual relationship. When both parties are between 9 and 17 years old, the older person commits a crime called "criminal sexual abuse." Punishment for the crime includes a max sentence of one year in jail ... and a requirement to register as a sex offender for ten years -- but in reality, these cases are almost never prosecuted. The most likely scenario in which Keef would face a judge is if the girl's parents press charges -- but if that hasn't already happened, it probably won't.

The girl is suing Keef for an undisclosed amount of child support, including health insurance and other medical expenses. Calls to both Keef's people and the girl's family were not returned. Keef's no stranger to legal problems -- he was just sentenced to 60 days in juvey for violating his probation on a gun charge.

Justin Timberlake Makes Historic Debut On Pop Songs Chart

Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie," featuring Jay-Z, makes a record-setting debut on Billboard's Pop Songs chart, which measures mainstream top 40 radio airplay, as monitored by Nielsen BDS, soaring in at No. 14. The song arrives with the highest first-week plays total in the chart's 20-year history and marks the highest bow for a song by a male artist.

"Suit" logged 6,045 plays in the Jan. 14-20 tracking week, with spins on all 157 of the Pop Songs chart's reporters, pushing it past Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which opened (also at No. 14) with 4,602 plays the week of Feb. 26, 2011, for the highest debut-week plays sum on Pop Songs, which launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992. (The chart panel expanded from 141 to 157 reporters late last year.)

With its No. 14 arrival, "Suit" takes over as the highest-debuting song by a male artist in the Pop Songs chart's archives. It bests the No. 19 entrance of Jon Secada's "If You Go" the week of May 14, 1994. Among all acts, only Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" launched at a higher rank (No. 12, Aug. 14, 1993); "Suit" and "Born" now share the mark for the second-highest lift-off among all artists.

Aiding the fast start for "Suit," several Clear Channel Media and Entertainment-owned Pop Songs panelists gave it top-of-the-hour plays last Monday (Jan. 14), while CBS Radio reporters played it heavily on its first day and stations in the Cumulus chain added it to rotation.

Based on its first two days of airplay when the Billboard Hot 100 airplay/sales/streaming hybrid chart was tabulated on Wednesday (16), "Suit" debuted at No. 84. With a full week of airplay and sales, projected to reach upwards of 350,000 in opening-week downloads, the song could vault into the Hot 100's top five when the chart is refreshed on Wednesday (23) this week.

"Over the years, we've come to expect the unexpected with Justin's music, which I think is fantastic," says Sharon Dastur, program director of Pop Songs panelist WHTZ New York. With its retro-soulful vibe, "'Suit & Tie' doesn't sound like anything else out in pop music right now and we can certainly use those kinds of songs. We welcome Justin back with open arms."

"Suit" concurrently roars onto the Rhythmic airplay chart at No. 14 and Adult Pop Songs at No. 22.

JUSTIN BIEBER Love Update, Wants Selena Gomez Back, She Wants to Date Others?

photo selena-gomez-justin-bieber_zpsa5b43dbe.jpg Are Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez back on? The popstar couple, can’t live with each other and can’t live without each other. After their public holiday split, Bieber’s told friends he hopes they go from break up back to make up. Can he stop his cheating ways or will Selena Gomez have to turn a blind eye to his non stop flirting? Here’s the latest update on everything Bieber and Gomez.

When it comes to love, Selena Gomez’s bff Taylor Swift, has made it known she doesn’t like Bieber as her boyfriend. Also, her parents think the couple need time apart. “Selena has cut off Justin. She told him they can remain friends but she needs space for a while to get over him fully,” a source close to the pop singer said.

Bieber who’s a Pisces never gives up on love. It seems he wants Selena Gomez the most when they are apart. I guess you always want, what you can’t have and he misses his girlfriend. Still, he’s enjoying his new single status by hanging out and partying with the boys.

For Selena Gomez a Cancer, her feelings are hurt. She can’t help but feel jealous and possessive over Bieber’s flirty ways. She’s laser focused on her career now, with her new movie Spring Breakers hitting theaters soon, Selena should enjoy her moment in the spotlight.

Astrologically speaking, Astrochicks predicts that Selena Gomez will move on with an older boyfriend. She needs to be put on a pedestal with a guy she can trust. No doubt, she still really loves Bieber but he’s too young to settle down. For Bieber, he won’t have any problem finding a new girlfriend, although Selena will always be his first love.

I'm surprised this got approved, but astrology post time, everyone!

Condoleezza Rice to work for CBS news

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has a new job. It has been announced that Rice will be joining CBS News as a contributor. According to Yahoo , CBS News chairman Jeff Fager and president David Rhodes stated, Rice "will use her insight and vast experience to explore issues facing America at home and abroad".

After working on the National Security Council under President George H.W. Bush, Rice became the national security adviser to President George W. Bush during his first term. When she became secretary of state in George W. Bush's second term, Rice made history as the first African American woman to ever hold the post. It's a little surprising to see Condoleezza Rice on CBS, considering the fact that the network's news department is so frequently painted as unabashedly liberal. Some would speculate that maybe CBS is trying to change its image.

The New York Post reports that Rice made her network debut Sunday on the program "Face the Nation". She will contribute to coverage of the inauguration on Monday. Rice's involvment in Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign was among her most prominent activities since the end of the Bush administration. She offered the Republican presidential nominee advice on general strategy and foreign policy, and was highly praised for her speech at the Republican National Convention.

Rice is an accomplished woman in so many areas. It will be interesting to see what she does at CBS, as well as future endeavors, and whether or not she ever gets a shot at her dream job, commisioner of the NFL.

New Avril Music!

Avril Lavigne fans won’t have to wait much longer to hear the ‘Complicated’ singer’s new material.

(Friday) the 28 year-old tweeted:" New music ready very soon. Thanks for being so supportive and patient. I'm doing my best in every way. Thanks xo."

This will be the star’s fifth album as she hasn’t released any new material since her 2009 studio album Goodbye Lullaby. Will Avril's fifth album be music to everybody's ears? The new record was originally planned to be released last year after ex- X Factor judge and Epic chairman LA Reid said he wanted to release the album in 2012 or at “the top of the year.”

Reid also let slip that Avril has co-written songs with her fiancé Nickleback frontman Chad Kroeger for her LP.

Film Industry's Gender Inequality Targeted by Sundance Institute and Women In Film's Research

The results of a first-of-its-kind study on gender disparity in independent film, conducted by the Sundance Institite and Women In Film Los Angeles, were shared today with a group of industry leaders at the Park City festival. The study was conducted by Stacy L. Smith, Ph.D., Katherine Pieper, Ph.D. and Marc Choueiti at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, University of Southern California.

Sundance's Keri Putnam states: "The results of this research are encouraging, and we hope they will highlight the barriers and opportunities facing women behind the camera."

Women In Film's Cathy Schulman adds that the data "shows us that there is a higher representation of female filmmakers in independent film as compared to Hollywood – but it also highlights the work that is still to be done for women to achieve equal footing in the field.”

Specific problems identified in the study as detrimental to women's career development in film include: gendered financial barriers, male-dominated industry networking and stereotyping on set. Consider the findings below:

Beth Revis on romance in YA sci-fi books

What goes really well with sci-fi explosions, spaceships and intergalactic conflict? Romance, of course. Beth Revis, author of Shades of Earth, book three in her Across the Universe series, explains …

Beth: I think it surprises a lot of readers that my YA science- fiction novel — with spaceships, explosions, and lots of star-strewn action — actually has quite a bit of romance in it as well.

Romance is a pretty big staple in most young adult (YA) literature today, and for good reason. Elizabeth Wein, author of the amazing YA historical novel Code Name Verity, pointed out that "In a true YA novel, the main characters will be changed forever by the end of the book." I've long struggled with a real definition of YA novels, but I think Wein hits the nail on the head here — dynamic characters are the single most important aspect of YA novels, whether they take place in history (like Code Name Verity) or the future (like my own Across the Universe novels).

And what greater change can a person experience than love? This is why love stories feature so predominantly in YA books, from dystopians and science fiction to contemporary and historical. Love is the game-changer of life.

Taylor Swift: “I can never decide if I want love or my own space”

In an interview with VIBE’s January issue, Taylor Swift opened up about her love life.

“Independence is something I’ve always needed, from when I was young," she says, "but I love the idea of romance and falling in love. I’ve never really had a long relationship. So that’s something I think about for the future. It’s an interesting part of my personality: Part of me just wants to be alone .... Sagittarians are really independent, and we like our space. We’re drawn to love but battle for that need for independence."

In another recent interview with Parade, she revealed: People think I want to get married really young - I don't know why. I'm a romantic person, but that doesn't mean I want to miss out on being in my young 20s."

Despite writing about it so prolifically, Swift claims not to know much about love. "I tend to think things are love and then look back and reevaluate."

Guess who's back

There haven't been many actors from the first Captain America film that are confirmed to return for the sequel besides Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan, but we now know one particular villain will be back. Toby Jones confirmed in an interview with HeyUGuys.co.uk that he would return for the upcoming sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Jones played the role of Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger and presumably survived the events of that film. In the comics, "Zola was a genetic engineer who created clones and various monstrosities for Hitler. He also captured his own mental self, inserting it into a robot, and survived the war." The blueprints for Zola's robotic body can be seen briefly in the film, so could he be appearing in the sequel in his new robot body?

The film is slated to star Chris Evans, reprising his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America, and franchise newcomers Anthony Mackie in the role of the Falcon and Frank Grillo as Crossbones. Reprising their roles from Marvel's The Avengers are Samuel L. Jackson as Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. Sebastian Stan returns as Bucky Barnes.

Set to be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will hit 2D and 3D theaters on April 4, 2014.

The Biebs Is Finally Ready to Snatch Gaga's Twitter Wig

Justin Bieber Overtaking Lady Gaga in Twitter Followers

Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber have always been Twitter royalty – The King and Queen of the service, if you will. They’ve held the #1 and #2 spots in follower count for a couple of years – but always in that order. Lady Gaga has always had a slight edge over Bieber.

That may be about the change

Back in May of 2011, Lady Gaga became the first person to ever hit 10 million followers on Twitter. Coming in second, at the time, was Justin Bieber.

Flash forward to January, 2012, when Lady Gaga hit 18 million followers. Once again, Justin Bieber retained the second-place spot.

In March, Gaga hit 20 million followers, with Bieber still trailing. In June, Gaga hit 25 million and yes, Bieber was just behind her. I’m hoping you’re sensing a pattern here.

'Fruitvale' At Center Of 7-Figure Bidding War; Buyers Call It 2013's 'Beasts Of The Southern Wild'

After what I heard and read was a strong debut at the Sundance Film Festival yesterday, Ryan Coogler's feature film debut Fruitvale, which stars Octavia Spencer, Michael B. Jordan, Tristan Wilds and Melonie Diaz, is said to now be in the middle of what looks like a bidding war between several distributors who are very interested in the film.

Deadline is reporting that the drama, based on the murder of 22-year old Oscar Grant (played by Jordan in the film), and produced by Forest Whitaker, is "at the center of a multi-distributor auction that will be wrapped up first thing Monday morning at Sundance," adding further that the end deal, whenever bidding is complete, will be "worth just north of a $2 million minimum guarantee with commitments for screen commitments and a theatrical release, with P&A."

And what distribution companies are in the mix? The biggies, like The Weinstein Company, Fox Searchlight, with Paramount Pictures and Focus Features.

In fact, word from Deadline is that buyers are calling it this year's Precious or Beast Of The Southern Wild, as in the little indie film that goes on to capture audiences and critical acclaim, as it travels throughout the year.

Performances are said to be strong, notably star Michael B Jordan's. So might we be talking awards season buzz for Mr Jordan in about 10 months? We'll see.

We should be getting a review from Zeba Blay some time today.

But kudos all around. I'm looking forward to seeing it sooner than later.

Taylor Swift Jets to London—Will She Reunite With Harry Styles?

Might Taylor Swift be getting back together with Harry Styles?

The 23-year-old "I Knew You Were Trouble" crooner flew into London Monday on her private jet, a source tells E! News—and the source also believes that the One Direction singer is in the country, and has a couple of days off.

According to the source, Swift arrived midday accompanied by two other people, and had several bags with her and her guitar.

"Once she disembarked, she was met by a bodyguard and a driver who took her straight into a central London," the source said. "She is staying at a London hotel. She seemed excited to be here. She was heard saying how pretty London looked (it's covered in snow at the moment)."

While we'll have to wait to see whether the ex-couple will get caught canoodling again, but Swift has been making the most of her time following her split with Styles a couple of weeks ago, grabbing dinner with her family and spending time in the recording studio.

Swift and Styles called it quits earlier this month after going on vacation together during the holidays in the British Virgin Islands.

Prince Harry "Thrilled" Over Kate's Pregnancy, Speaks Out on his Nude Photo Scandal

Prince Harry is ready to become Uncle Harry!

Speaking with reporters in a pre-taped interview at the end of his four-month military tour in Afghanistan, Harry reveals he "can't wait" to be an uncle to Prince William and Kate Middleton's first child, adding he's "thrilled" for the couple.

Plus, Harry finally talks about the nude photo scandal he endured after his trip to Las Vegas in late August, saying he let himself down.

"Obviously I'm thrilled for both of them. It's about time!" Harry says of Prince William and Kate's pregnancy. "I can't wait to be an uncle."

Though the officer known as Capt. Harry Wales has been serving with the British Army Air Corps in Afghanistan since September, Harry says he has been in contact with his brother and sister-in-law. "I spoke to my brother and her, and they're both very well and both very happy obviously," he says. "I think it's very unfair that they were forced to publicize it when they were, but that's just the media for you."

Speaking of the media, Harry adds that he hopes Kate will be able to maintain privacy during her pregnancy, especially after having to announce the news early after Kate was hospitalized due to acute morning sickness. "I literally am very, very happy for them, but I just only hope that she and him—but mainly Catherine—hopefully that she gets the necessary protection to allow her as a mother-to-be to enjoy the privacy that that comes with," he says. "I seriously hope that's going to be able to happen."

Speaking to his nude photo scandal, Harry says, "I probably let myself down. I let my family down, I let other people down."

However, Harry once again brings up the issue of the media's treatment of him and his family, saying, "At the end of the day, I was in a private area and there should be a certain amount of privacy...The way I was treated by [the media] I don't think is acceptable."

The Hobbit Interviews: Jed Brophy On Nori

‘If Nori were English, he’d be a cockney...'

Like his brother-in-arms Mark Hadlow, Jed Brophy has worked with Peter Jackson since his gore-filled early days. He’s appeared in Heavenly Creatures and popped up in a range of villainous guises across The Lord Of The Rings trilogy including Sharku, a warg rider and a Nazgûl (if a death-dealing servant of Sauron can be said to “pop up” anywhere – and they probably can’t). If flying around on a fell beast doesn’t give a man his Middle-earth bearings, joining Thorin’s company on a quest for distant treasure should do the trick. The long time WETA-ite chatted to Empire’s Ian Nathan about playing Nori.

Jurnee Smollett Is On A Roll! Joins Cast Of HBO's 'True Blood' For Upcoming Season 6

NBC never did pick up the women's prison drama pilot Bad Girls - an adaptation of a UK series - that Jurnee Smollett was a star of.

But the young actress has locked in 2 other TV jobs, including the previously-mentioned role as the daughter of Phylicia Rashad’s character, in NBC's Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish thriller, Do No Harm, as well as today's reveal - that she'll be joining the cast of HBO‘s True Blood during its upcoming sixth season.

Ms Smollett will play Nicole Wright, described as "wide-eyed... who is not concerned with money and more concerned with the common good and doing what’s right."

This'll be a series regular role for her, by the way.

True Blood‘s sixth season is scheduled to begin in June.

Smollett will next be seen on the big screen in Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.

SUNDANCE: Austenland acquired by Sony for $4 million +

Sundance 2013: Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Nabs 'Austenland' (Exclusive)

UPDATED: Sony Pictures Classics will release Jerusha Hess' directorial debut, which sold for north of $4 million, sources say.

PARK CITY -- Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has nabbed worldwide rights to Jerusha Hess' Austenland after several days of competitive bidding. Sources peg the deal at north of $4 million.

Sony Pictures Classics will release the film domestically.

The comedic spin on Jane Austen from director Hess originally sparked five bids; among the bidders was Exclusive Releasing/FilmDistrict, which initially had made separate bids but teamed up as counter offers escalated. But deal-making came to a halt as producer Stephenie Meyer was unavailable.

Hess, with husband Jared Hess who co-wrote Napoleon Dynamite and the Jack Black starrer Nacho Libre, penned Austenland with Shannon Hale.

The film follows a woman obsessed with a BBC production of Pride and Prejudice who travels to a Jane Austen-styled English resort to find her perfect gentleman.

Austenland premiered Jan. 18 at Eccles Theatre as part of Sundance's U.S. Dramatic Competition section. It stars Keri Russell, JJ Feild, Jennifer Coolidge, Georgia King and James Callis.

Anyone read this one? I read the one about the Mormon housewife who becomes bff with a thinly veiled Colin Firth and it's not a romance even though it is. It was loltastically bad.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Remember earlier this year when we shared with you an amazing collaboration between Adam Lambert and Cyndi Lauper of “Mad World” during a performance in New York City? Well, we just have even more amazing news to share with you. Lambert and Lauper were so great on stage and their chemistry was perfect. Their voices join incredibly well together. In fact, they were so good that they will most likely record the song together.

A source exclusively reveals:

“Adam and Cyndi talked after their performance. They want to record their duet of Mad World at the studio and release it. It’s just a project they want to do for fun.”

This is pretty cool news. We are most definitely excited to be able to buy a collaboration like this. Are y’all excited or what?

Chris Evans' Brother Pleads Guilty to Attempted Cocaine Possession

Former "One Life to Live" star Scott Evans has pled GUILTY to attempted cocaine possession following his arrest last month -- but TMZ has learned, he won't spend a day in the slammer.

We broke the story ... Scott -- brother of "Captain America" Chris Evans -- was busted last month and charged with one count of attempted possession of a controlled substance after trying to buy coke from an undercover cop.

He originally pled not guilty to the charge ... but changed his plea in exchange for no jail time.

Scott agreed to attend 60 Narcotics Anonymous meetings -- and if he goes to all the meetings in the next six months (and stays out of trouble) the judge will throw out the case .. almost like it never happened.

Scott's lawyer Shepard Kopp tells us the actor isn't wasting any time -- he's already knocked out a few classes.

Scott, if you need a sponsor, just think of me like that old Chingy song...I'm only one call away.
