She told NYLON magazine: "We both experienced the same things at the same time. But we've never once talked about our industry.

"She just became the person I'd go to for an issue with my family or boyfriend. It's so hard to trust girls, so I'm lucky to have her."

Paul Dano to play Brian Wilson in Biopic

Bill Pohlad's film about the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson has been coming together for about eighteen months now, and perhaps the most important piece in the development puzzle has now fallen into place. Paul Dano has signed on to play the troubled musician in Love and Mercy. He'll get to cover Wilson's creative heyday, while another actor is still being sought to portray Wilson in more recent years.

Wilson's ride has been a tough one. The driving force behind surfin' birds The Beach Boys, he knocked out hit after hit in the early '60s, and shepherded the seminal Pet Sounds album to worldwide acclaim and classic status. But the collapse of the ambitious follow-up Smile was the catalyst for a downward spiral ino depression and substance abuse that lasted for decades. There's a happy ending though: in the last fifteen years or so he's enjoyed improved health and a revived music career, which included Smile's belated completion and release.

Plenty or material for a bopic, in other words, although a straight life story is not quite Pohlad's intention. "What's fascinating to me is to look at the different elements in his life, like that super-creative period when he was doing Pet Sounds and the later part when he was redeemed."

Oren Moverman, who was behind I'm Not There, which spilt Bob Dylan's life into constituent parts and saw him essayed by multiple actors, has written the Love And Mercy screenplay. That seems significant, although we wouldn't expect his Wilson film to be quite that off-the-wall. Atticus Ross, who collaborated with Trent Reznor on the music for The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, has signed up to oversee the soundtrack.

"I am thrilled that Paul Dano has signed on to play me during one of my most creative explosions and most fulfilling musical times in my career," Wilson said in a press release. "I still can't believe how cool it is that my life will be portrayed on the big screen and to have Bill Pohlad as the captain of the Sloop John B is amazing! It just makes me feel so humble. I can't wait to see it with a full tub of buttered popcorn."

Feminism is totally cool with Beyoncé posing in her underwear

Ed. note: This is a joint post by Sesali and Maya in response to this article criticizing Beyoncé for posing “nearly naked” in a new GQ profile.

Sesali: First off, one of the most interesting things about people like this who come after Beyoncé for “fucking up feminism” is that I have never once heard Beyoncé self identify as a feminist. So whose feminist standards are we holding her up to and why? This reminds me of a feminist stance we’ve seen here recently–one that is basically waiting for the opportunity to tell someone else that their feminism, that they may or may not own, isn’t good enough. How ironic. And do I catch the tiniest whiff of white privilege here?

Maya: Yes, I’d venture more than a whiff. And you and I have actually touched on this topic before. I don’t think celebs who have never claimed to speak for the feminist movement have any obligation to be feminist role models, period. But no matter how anyone self-identifies, it’s far more interesting to look about what they’re doing and the ideas they’re supporting–whether they have a gender awareness and commitment to equality. And in that regard, Beyoncé is killing it in this profile. “Equality is a myth, and for some reason everyone accepts that women don’t make as much money as men.” she says. “I truly believe that women should be financially independent from their men. And let’s face it, money gives men the power to run the show. It gives men the power to define value. They define what’s sexy. And men define what’s feminine. It’s ridiculous.” On fucking point.

Kate Middleton Resurfaces at Local Starbucks

One grande decaf skinny latte for the Duchess, pronto! Last Friday, Jan. 11, a pregnant Kate Middleton quietly emerged from Kensington Palace for a very hush-hush jaunt: A walk through Kensington Gardens with dog Lupo followed by a drop-in at a nearby Starbucks!

Escorted by a security guard, the 31-year-old Duchess "looked beautiful," an onlooker tells Us Weekly. "Her hair was done nicely and she had a scarf, lovely long coat and boots on." Still under wraps, although Middleton is now in her second trimester? Her baby bump. "She was wrapped up warm, so I couldn't see the bump," the observer explains.

As the security guard waited outside with Lupo, Prince William's wife went inside and placed her order herself: Her decaf drink, plus a cookie. "Kate was smiling," the observer continues, adding that she "paid with a Starbucks card, which she swiped herself."

Thus armed with provisions, the expectant royal took Lupo's leash back from the security guard (the pooch is "so cute and well-behaved," the spy says), and the trio continued on their walk.

"She's a regular," a Starbucks staffer tells Us of the unassuming Duchess. This past Monday, she and William, 30, announced they "are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July," adding that "The Duchess's condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month." (Middleton's first trimester was marred by acute morning sickness.)

Sophia Bush still worked up over rumors of her dating Josh Hutcherson, shares their group text

Did you even know there was a rumor about Sophia Bush dating The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson?

Sophia let us know the rumor existed when she knocked it down in joking tweets, then shared an Instagram screenshot of her texts with friends Josh and Cameron Cruz.

Sophia, former star of One Tree Hill, and Hit and Run actor Cameron recently visited Josh in Hawaii while he was filming the second Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire. Star Magazine printed a story — apparently, linking Sophia and Josh — and she joked that she was upset that they didn't say she was dating Cameron, too: "Aw @Star_News, I'm offended. I hugged @CameronCruz a LOT in Hawaii 2. Don't leave him out of the fun! We all love @jhutch1992 but c'mon now." Nice!

You can see in the Instagram pic that Josh joked about being "so happy" about the rumor, which came out two months after their visit.

There are worse fates than being wrongly linked to a cutie like Josh! He was also recently linked to Selena Gomez (which is probably also a stretch) but our favorite is the report about the Hunger Games "bromance" between Josh and Sam Claflin. Jennifer Lawrence said they are in love.

Mixed Reactions To Vogue's New Fashion Spread

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
When Vogue decided to pay tribute to the heroes of Hurricane Sandy in its February issue, the magazine took a distinctly high-fashion approach: sticking supermodels in a set of stormy scenes alongside real first responders.

"When Hurricane Sandy hit, the city's bravest and brightest punched back," the magazine wrote in its story "Storm Troupers." "With the area now on the mend, we paid these stalwart souls a visit, dressed up in the best of the New York collections. Call them New York's other finest."

The result is a striking collection of images shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz, featuring models flanking firemen, Con Ed workers, and neonatal caregivers, among others. Each image is accompanied by a photo caption from a Sandy hero, detailing what they went through during the storm.

But the glossy photos, released online Wednesday, left a bad taste in some critics' mouths, coming off as insensitive or offensive.

These People Enjoyed Obama's Second-Term Inauguration

We’ve all heard of “fake it till you make it,” but for the pedestrians caught on Jimmy Kimmel’s “Lie Witness News,” maybe the better mantra is “don’t sign the releases.”

In the segment, Kimmel’s reporter asks people what they thought about the teddy bear throwing, tap routine, giant free cake, and Biden tears at President Obama’s inauguration.

The only problem (as you all definitely know) is that the inauguration hasn’t happened yet.

While other actresses on the verge of becoming Hollywood A-list – she is the female lead in major new American drama World Without End and Tom Cruise’s co-star in the much-anticipated movie All You Need is Kill – might reveal more glamorous tastes (champagne, Christian Louboutin shoes or toy chihuahuas), Charlotte remains endearingly in touch with her Northern roots and cites ‘tea guzzling’ as her number-one passion. There is a God and He lives in Brazil- judge orders '50 Shades of Grey' removed

SAO PAULO (AP) — A Brazilian judge has ordered bookstores to ensure that the erotic trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey" is out of the reach of minors.

Judge Raphael Queiroz Campos issued the order Jan 14 after he saw children in one of city's bookstores looking through erotic books, according to a statement issued by the Rio de Janeiro State Judiciary Department Thursday night.

Eleven copies of the "Grey" series were among 64 books taken from the shelves of two bookstores because their content was deemed improper for those under the age of 18.

Two days after the judge's order, the books were back on the shelves, but sealed and out of reach of minors, as Campos instructed.

The judge based his decision on a law that says "magazines and publications whose content is improper or inadequate for children and adolescents can only be sold if sealed and with warnings regarding their content."

E.L James' works were the most-sold books in Brazil last year, according to newsweekly Veja. "Fifty Shades Freed" was the top seller, followed by "Fifty Shades of Grey" and "Fifty Shades Darker."

Although ordering books off the shelves is unusual, the move has not caused any major backlash or uproar in Brazil.

Last year public libraries in several U.S. states pulled the trilogy from their shelves or did not order the best-seller at all, saying it's too steamy or too poorly written.

This is what Warner Channel's mexican Gossip Girl looks like, gives major secondhand embarrassment.

The good news is that this is as awful as you thought it would be.

Translation for those who do not understand:

-Gossip Girl has been downgraded from owning her own blog to being a Twitter nobody.
-Sofía (Serena) comes back from Lord knows where in her BMW.
-Liliana (Lily) gives Marcelo (Rufus) shit for being a painter? and because their kids are dating.
-Max (Chuck) blackmails Sofía (Serena) saying that he filmed when she and Nico (Nathan) hooked up. Faps ocasionally to video.
-Nico (Nathan) broke up with Bárbara (Blair) and his father curses.
-Apparently, they decided they needed a blonde Jenny so she either went blonde or they changed the actress.
-Somehow, they make the original cast look like good actors.

Cover For Octavia Spencer's 1st Novel - 'Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective'

The cover for Octavia Spencer's upcoming first novel has surfaced, as the award-winning actress expands her name brand, from actress, to author.

As first reported in October, Spencer signed a deal with Simon & Schuster for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, to publish Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective, a two-book middle-grade series.

The first title in the series, Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective: The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit will be published in Fall 2013, and is the author's first novel.

Randi Rhodes isn't your average twelve-year-old. She's a Brooklyn vigilante with a Tae Kwon Do black belt. But circumstances take a turn for the worse when Randi's mother passes away and her father decides to move to the small and sleepy town of Deer Creek, Tennessee. Randi couldn't be more unhappy—until a mystery arises: the town's two-hundred-year-old time capsule, which is rumored to contain hidden treasure, inexplicably disappears. Randi must solve the case, as the town's fate hangs in the balance.

The press release says that an index at the end of the book will provide fun activities and a website, for what it calls a truly interactive experience.

"I want to take young readers on a sleuthing adventure," says Octavia Spencer. "Growing up I was a huge fan of mysteries like Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown, and my biggest hope is that after meeting these young detectives, kids will experience the same sense of magic I felt when solving my first mystery."

And given Hollywood's infatuation with adapting YA novels right now, I'm sure Spencer wouldn't mind if that trend continues and Randi Rhodes eventually gets the big screen treatment. I guess it partly depends on how successful the novel is.

BET's 'Real Husbands,' ' Next Generation Wayans' Top Tuesday Cable

The two new scripted efforts draw more than 11 million viewers combined, with "Husbands" besting even the broadcast networks among adults 18-49 during its time slot.

BET's new sitcoms debuted quite nicely on Tuesday night, topping all of cable and rivaling most broadcast efforts during the 10 p.m. hour.

Real Husbands of Hollywood, Kevin Hart's lampooning of the Real Housewives franchise, pulled 4.1 million viewers in its inaugural 10 p.m. outing. The series beat all cable and network broadcasts in the adults 18-49 demo with a 2.1 rating.

Its 11 p.m. encore also ranked in cable's top 10 for the night, bringing in an additional 2.3 million viewers and a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49.

Second Generation Wayans, the night's other debut, was in a close second in cable viewership and its demo score. The 10:30 p.m. episode pulled 3.5 million viewers and a 1.7 rating with 18-49-ers. Its 11:30 p.m. encore raked in an additional 1.4 million and a 0.6 adults rating.

Real Husbands now stands as the No. 1 new cable sitcom of the season in viewers and the demo. In adults 18-34, it's the third best launch of all time -- behind BET's launch of The Game and the premiere of Let's Stay Together.

Liam Neeson to 'Run All Night'

Back in November, we reported that Liam Neeson was in talks to star in the Warner Bros. thriller The All Nighter (a.k.a. Run All Night). According to Deadline, the title has reverted to Run All Night and Neeson is confirmed to star. Neeson will play an aging hitman who, in order to protect his wife and son, must take on his former boss in a single night. He then finds himself on the run from the mob and authorities with his estranged son in tow. Although Run All Night comes from a spec script by Brad Ingelsby, it sounds slightly similar to the excellent 2011 French thriller Sleepless Night, which centers on a man who must spend a night avoiding the mob and cops as he tries to rescue his son (Warner Bros. owns the English-language remake rights for Sleepless Night).

Deadline also reports that Jaume Collet-Serra might sign on to direct. Collet-Serra previously directed Neeson in Unknown and the upcoming airline thriller Non-Stop, which sees Neeson playing an Air Marshal trying to protect a plane that’s been taken hostage.

Utah Conservative Groups Complains about Sundance; Robert Redford LOL's

A conservative Utah group believes the Sundance Film Festival’s lineup featuring ‘obscene’ movies is at odds with Utah’s culture of family values, and wants the state to pull its financial backing.

The Sutherland Institute says the state shouldn’t back a festival that features films about porn stars and women having affairs with one another’s adult sons. He’s referring to a pair of movies featuring well-known Hollywood actresses: Lovelace starring Amanda Seyfried, and Two Mothers starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright. Lovelace is rated R. Two Mothers is not yet rated.

Glee rips off Geek King Jonathan Coulton

Glee made its name on enthusiastic unoriginality. The hit TV show, in which high school teens sing syrupy-sweet covers of famous pop tunes, has never really relied on new musical material. But the cover arrangements on the show are often very original—smart, interesting reharmonizations and mash-ups that often make even the tiredest pop tunes sound fresh.

However, with one of their arrangements for next week's episode, Glee appears to have flagrantly stolen an arrangement from geeky songwriter Jonathan Coulton.

Coulton, well-known for his now-classic video game anthem "Still Alive" from the game Portal (as well as for performing on our roof deck that one time), tweeted about the song this morning:

Another Round of Blind Items

1.) This D list celebrity with A list name recognition is trying to sell a story about he hooked up with his B list celebrity ex and baby mama who has A++ list name recognition. Apparently he needs the money and is willing to sell the story even though it would destroy his current relationship.

2.) For the second time in the past two years, this A list all movie actress is sleeping with a guy who also slept with her daughter.

3.) This foreign born actress who is probably a B- in her own country and maybe a D here but with B list name recognition makes her money on red carpets and hotel bedrooms now. Her biggest client ever paid her $35K for two nights. With a check. That bounced. Always should be cash. Our actress went ballistic when she found out it had bounced. Caused a scene where she was and almost got tossed out of the place where she was.

4.) This B- list actor who is an Academy Award winner/nominee was at an event out of the country recently. As part of his contract he requested that a staff of 5 women be available 24 hours a day to have sex with him. The country where our actor was visiting has legal prostitution so the A list company said sure and had the women available to him. I'm guessing they don't want their very rich, female customers to know about this little transaction.

5.) Massive fights about her coke use have led to this A list couple on the verge of splitting. She is an almost A list at this point all movie actress and he is a B- list at this point all movie actor. He does not do drugs. He has lots of other vices and issues, but he doesn't do drugs. She does. They fight. She now says she has stopped, but hasn't. She just does more when he is not around. This would be a tabloid cover if they split.

6.) This former A list all movie actress who is an Academy Award winner/nominee has dropped to a B because of her crippling depression which makes her unable to work much had a recent relapse. She had been doing much better and had been taking her meds, but decided she didn't need them and ended up holed up in her hotel room out of the country for a few days and would not come out. Finally she let one of her friends in who said that our actress needed to be at an event and that she was getting paid to be there and our actress got up, got dressed and was out the door and acted like nothing had happened. She is really on the edge.

"God Loves Uganda" participating to the Sundance Festival

God Loves Uganda explores the role of the American evangelical movement in Uganda, where American missionaries have been credited with both creating schools and hospitals and promoting dangerous religious bigotry. The film follows evangelical leaders in America and Uganda along with politicians and missionaries as they attempt the radical task of eliminating “sexual sin” and converting Ugandans to fundamentalist Christianity.
As an American influenced bill to make homosexuality punishable by death wins widespread support, tension in Uganda mounts and an atmosphere of murderous hatred takes hold. The film reveals the conflicting motives of faith and greed, ecstasy and egotism, among Ugandan ministers, American evangelical leaders and the foot soldiers of a theology that sees Uganda as a test case, ground zero in a battle not for millions, but billions of souls.
Through verite, interviews, and hidden camera footage – and with unprecedented access – God Loves Uganda takes viewers inside the evangelical movement in both the US and Uganda.  It features Lou Engle, the creator of The Call which brings tens of thousands of believers together to pray against sexual sin. It provides a rare view of the most powerful evangelical minister in Uganda, who lives in a mansion where he’s served by a white-coated chef. It goes into a Ugandan church where a preacher whips a congregation into mass hysteria with anti-gay rhetoric. It records the culture clash between enthusiastic Midwestern missionaries and world weary Ugandans. It features a heartbreaking interview with gay activist David Kato shortly before he was murdered. It tells the moving story of Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, a minister excommunicated, ostracized and literally spat on for being tolerant and his remarkable campaign for peace and healing in Uganda. Shocking, horrifying, touching and enlightening, God Loves Uganda will make you question what you thought you knew about religion.

Designer John Galliano starts comeback at de la Renta

(Reuters) - Disgraced fashion designer John Galliano is making his return to the industry with a temporary residency at Oscar de la Renta's studio in New York, de la Renta said on Friday.

"He has worked long and hard on his recovery, and I'm happy to give him the opportunity to reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative," de la Renta said in a statement confirming Galliano's stint.

De la Renta added that he had known Galliano for years and said "I'm a great admirer of his talent."

Galliano, 52, said an addiction to drugs and alcohol had left him out of control and he was determined to make amends.

Nigella Lawson Forbade ABC From Airbrushing Tummy On Promos For 'The Taste'

As The Taste gears up for its premiere this Tuesday, the ABC promotional machine has peppered the entire country with ads containing the interesting-looking mugs of Anthony Bourdain, Ludo Lefebvre, and Brian Malarkey, as well as the sensual cannoli who calls herself Nigella Lawson. But unlike Malarkey, whose face looks like a glossy, perfect egg, Lawson and her curves are delightfully…human-looking. And this is on purpose.

On her blog, Lawson revealed that she forbade the ABC promo team from photoshopping out any of her human imperfections, particularly her stomach.

“Although it was very thrilling to think of being up on a billboard in LA and around the States, I was very strict and English and told them they weren’t allowed to airbrush my tummy out,” she wrote. “Wise? Hmmm. But that tum is the truth and is come by honestly, as my granny would have said.”

Nigella, you woman person, you. We can’t believe you managed to convince ABC to leave you and your curvature alone. (If only we could say the same about Malarkey, who looks like he held a gun to a graphic designer’s head until he dialed up the saturation in Photoshop… or lived in Miami. Zing!)

Need proof? Look at the poster below and bask in Nigella. Doctors say she’s the illest, ’cause she’s sufferin’ from realness. [ugh, i was so offended by that corniness that i debated deleting it from the post, but i decided against it.]

Diego Klattenhof (aka Shane Oman) Leaving S3 of Homeland

Homeland fans will be seeing less of “Uncle Mike” when the Emmy winning smash returns next September.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Diego Klattenhoff — who has played Brody’s army buddy and the “other man” in his marriage to Jessica — will not be back as a series regular in Season 3.

Reps for Showtime and 20th declined to comment, but a source tells TVLine that it’s possible the actor could be back in a recurring capacity.

The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise given that Homeland essentially wrapped up Klattenhoff’s story in the Season 2 finale. Curiously, Klattenhoff’s co-star, Morena Baccarin, is expected to return as a regular.

The silver lining for Klattenhoff: He’s now free to jump head first into pilot season, where he’ll likely be a hot commodity.

Homeland‘s third season launches Sunday, Sept. 29 at 9/8c.

But one thing her nearest and dearest aren’t too happy about is her decision to ditch the deodorant.
Khloe confronts Kourtney’s partner Scott Disick about the way her sister smells during a preview clip from the new season of Kourtney and Kim Take Miami.

‘Do you notice that there’s a little something with Kourt?’ Khloe asks as they enjoy a peaceful spot of repose on the balcony. ‘Like, the BO?’
Scott immediately agrees: ‘Yeah, she reeks.’
He explains the smell is just a result of Kourtney’s bid to stay all natural.
‘Only because she doesn’t believe in wearing deodorant because she thinks it’s bad for her breastfeeding or something,’ Scott says, which is met by a scream from Khloe.

Blunt as always: Kourtney's sister Khloe broached the subject and asked Scott if he has noticed 'the BO'
‘It’s uncomfortable,’ Scott admits. ‘You don’t want to tell somebody you love that they stink.’
But Khloe takes a typically blunt approach to the matter and says: ‘I just think, a little dab will do ya.’
Khloe tells the cameras: ‘I’m not surprised that Scott knows. I got a whiff of her, and everyone should know. Typically I would tell Kourtney that she stinks, but Kourtney has a lot going on.

Madonna Lied About Building Schools In Malawi

A new controversy surrounding Madonna’s latest education project in the country which is the native home of two of her adopted children, raises many questions after Malawi education authorities on Thursday challenged a claim by Madonna’s organization, that her charity last year built 10 new schools in the poor southern African nation.

Education Minister Eunice Kazembe said…

“The schools Raising Malawi claims to have constructed were already in existence. Raising Malawi only built 10 classroom blocks and not schools. People should know the difference between the two.”

In December Madonna’s charity in tandem with global non-profit buildOn, announced the completion of 10 schools, claiming they would provide education to 4,871 children.

Madonna said in a statement
issued at the time

“I am overjoyed that my commitment along with buildOn’s to help educate the children of Malawi has come to fruition.”

Michael J. Fox and Taylor Swift quash their nonexistant feud

Michael J. Fox totally knows who Taylor Swift is, you guys.

The iconic actor got in touch with our favorite country-pop heartbreaker to clear the air on a few not-so-flattering comments that he made about her at a recent book signing, and with that, the feud between two of the least-threatening celebrities on earth has come to an anticlimactic end.

Here's how it all went down. Fox's son, Sam, was Mr. Golden Globes at the ceremony on Sunday -- meaning he carried the trophies on stage and stood around looking like a flashback to 1985, when the world was pure. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler got a little fake-tipsy midway through the show, and Fey grumbled, "Taylor Swift, stay away from Michael J. Fox's son!"

Take note: Swift and Sam have probably never met, because she did not win her category at the Golden Globes, and thus sparks did not have the chance to fly as he handed her a trophy. Also, she probably has no interest in dating him, because he works for a small startup company that helps farmers sell their crops, and nothing about that rhymes with anything catchy.

Could Mel Gibson be the biological father of Jodie Foster’s two sons?

Could Mel Gibson be the biological father of Jodie Foster’s two sons?

That’s what some in Hollywood were wondering as Foster thanked Gibson — “You know, you save me, too” — in her heartfelt speech Sunday, reports The Post’s Los Angeles correspondent, Richard Johnson. Gibson was sitting with Charles, 14, and Kit, 12, at Foster’s table.

Foster has never revealed her handsome sons’ paternity and has reportedly said she won’t tell the boys until they turn 21.

“The kids look like him [Gibson] but blonder,” said one amateur genealogist.

If Gibson, a father of eight, donated his sperm to Foster, it would explain her fierce loyalty to the troubled star while the rest of Hollywood shunned him over his anti-Semitic remarks and abusive treatment of Oksana Grigorieva, the Russian girlfriend who bore his last child, Lucia, 3.

The Wire's Robert F. Chew Dies of Heart Failure

Robert F. Chew, best known for his role on the hit HBO show The Wire, has died from heart failure, according to The Baltimore Sun. He was 52.

Chew, who played Proposition Joe on the cable show, passed away in his sleep on Thursday at his home in Baltimore, his sister Clarise Chew tells the paper.

His former co-star Michael Kenneth Wiliams Tweeted a message on Thursday saying, "R.I.P. to the talented Mr Robert Chew." The message was retweeted almost 1,000 times and was met by shock and sadness from friends and fans.

"I didn't want to believe this #RIP Robert F Chew," The Wire's Jamie Hector wrote on Twitter. "Prop Joe will always be remembered Robert Chew will always be loved and missed!"

The show's creator, David Simon, sent a lengthy email to The Baltimore Sun praising Chew's work as an actor and his dedication to his community.

"Robert was not only an exceptional actor, he was an essential part of the film and theater community in Baltimore," wrote David Simon. "He could have gone to New York or Los Angeles and commanded a lot more work, but he loved the city as his home and chose to remain here working."

Chew, a member of the local Arena Players theater troupe, mentored children and aspiring actors, and even facilitated bringing a group of 22 young actors to play students on The Wire's fourth season.

Why Fringe’s Finale Marks the Decline of Sci-Fi on Network TV

When Fringe airs its series finale tonight (8 p.m. EST on Fox), it won’t just mean a conclusion to the five-year run of stories about Olivia, Peter and Walter’s Weird Science Adventures; it’ll mark the end of an era for science fiction on broadcast television — for the foreseeable future, at least.

While the close of the series doesn’t mean an end to openly genre shows on the Big Five networks (ABC, CBS, the CW, NBC and FOX), the ones that remain either skew more magical/supernatural (Once Upon a Time, Grimm, Supernatural) or pride themselves on a more grounded approach to the theoretically fantastic (Revolution, Arrow). But in terms of pure sci-fi TV, there isn’t much left to carry the torch after Fringe closes up shop.

The Ratings Are In: 3.2 Million Tune Into Oprah-Armstrong Interview

3.2 million viewers tuned in to OWN for the first airing of Oprah's bombshell interview with Lance Armstrong on Thursday.

It was the second highest-rated telecast for the young network, according to a statement from OWN on Friday. The interview's second airing at 9 p.m. PT drew an additional 1.1 million viewers, for a total of 4.3 million viewers watching the interview that night. The 9 p.m. airing came second to the March 2012 telecast of "Oprah's Next Chapter" with Whitney Houston’s family, which drew 3.5 million viewers.

Thursday's interview was also the highest-rated weekday telecast for OWN in the key 25-54 demographic.

All eyes were on Oprah and Armstrong this past week, as news that he confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs leaked. Oprah said that the interview was "the biggest" of her career, and was widely praised for her questioning.

Thursday's interview — which brought in premiums for advertising time and put OWN in the limelight — is the latest sign that the network is finally gaining traction. Oprah declared that OWN had finally "made the pivot" in September, after it initially struggling to gain traction and several big shake-ups in programming.

The only reason the network is finally seeing any kind of boost is because Big O is back on the screen.

Bolshoi’s artistic director attacked with acid, may lose eyesight

The artistic director of the world renowned Bolshoi Ballet was the victim of a vicious acid attack in central Moscow that may stem from rifts within the dance company.

Russian news reports say Sergei Filin was walking home on Thursday night when a masked assailant threw acid on his face and ran off.
Filin, 43, is said to be in stable condition, but the attack left him with third degree burns across his face. Doctors are scrambling to save his eyesight. He is schedule to undergo surgery today and is expected to be flown to Belgium for further treatment. Russian news reports say he will require plastic surgery and that recovery could take months.
Filin was a star ballet dancer with the Bolshoi company before becoming artistic director in 2011. Investigators have suggested that internal theater politics may be behind the attack. In a statement, the Bolshoi Theater said he had been the subject of an intimidation campaign in recent months. According to RIA Novosti, his car tires were slashed, he received threatening phone calls, and there were attempts to hack into his Facebook account.

So far no suspects have been apprehended. RIA Novosti reports that, if caught, they face up to eight years in prison.

Also, from the NYT: The stories about vengeance at the Bolshoi Ballet go back centuries: The rival who hid an alarm clock in the audience, timed to go off during Giselle’s mad scene, or who threw a dead cat onto the stage at curtain in lieu of flowers. There are whispers of needles inserted in costumes, to be discovered in midpirouette, or — the worst — broken glass nestled in the tip of a toeshoe.

Lady Gaga US Concert Tour Starts in Tacoma; Group Protests With Airplane Ad

Lady Gaga had a message Monday for the screaming, costumed fans who showed up outside the Tacoma Dome hours before her concert: Help make society more accepting of differences and safer for young people.

“The change begins with you,” the recording artist told the crowd over a loudspeaker before starting the American leg of her Born This Way Tour.

In the background, a banner flown by an airplane hired by the Florida Family Association had a different message: “NOT BORN THIS WAY.”

The pre-concert tailgate was outside Gaga’s Born Brave Bus, part of her Born This Way Foundation. The gathering was meant to help connect fans with community resources such as mental health services and volunteer organizations.

The Florida Family Association, whose leaders in Tampa could not be reached for comment Monday evening, stated on its website that it paid $1,900 to fly the banner from 1 p.m. until sundown. The group said it is seeking donations to fly the banner at other stops on Gaga’s tour.

Notre Dame's real dead woman - Lizzy Seeberg's suicide is ignored

Less than a day into the Manti Te’o revelations, we’ve heard more about a fake dead girlfriend of a Notre Dame football player than a real dead girl. Lizzy Seeberg committed suicide, not long after being intimidated by Notre Dame football players for reporting a sexual assault by one of their teammates. A second woman who was taken to the hospital for a rape exam declined to formally accuse another Notre Dame football player after getting a series of bullying texts from players.

The handful of people who immediately took note of the contrast in the attention — both by the press and by the university — are absolutely right to be angry. But no one should be surprised.

Jennifer Connelly Filming 'Winter's Tale'

Jennifer Connelly was showing her multitasking skills as she was snapped on set in New York City with her daughter (January 14). The 42-year-old actress, who spent the day filming scenes on the set of “Winter’s Tale”, was spotted carrying her 20-month-old daughter, Agnes, around Central Park.

Entertaining the child, the brunette star seemed to be loving her mum duties as she beamed during the walk. Then it was back to work for Jennifer who swapped her daughter for young co-star Ripley Sobo.

Trailer For Cool-Looking Upcoming Canadian TV Animated Show 'Urbance'

Check out this trailer for an upcoming animated TV series I received, titled Urbance from Canadian director Joel Dos Reis Viegas, for Steambot Studios (a Canada & USA-based visual development studio who work in a variety of media platforms, including film and TV).

I'm told that it's not yet officially a TV series, but the filmmaker and the studio likely plan to pitch it to TV networks, after working on creating the world of the series for some 3 years (animation takes a long time to complete).

The synopsis reads:

In the big city, gender war rises. Sex is prohibited because of a genetic deadly virus. Ruled by hate and anger, boys and girls grow up apart from each other, forming rivals gangs. Among these lost teenagers, Kenzell and lesya will fight adversity and defy all the rules in order to live their love and restore peace.

A website has been set up for the project (HERE) where you'll find lots more information about the proposed serial, including a bunch of still images, and a breakdown of each character from each gang.

No ETA yet on when we can expect to see the first episode, whether online, or on TV. But it's got my attention, so I'll certainly be paying attention for any updates.

Beyonce, GQ and feminism: another perspective

Beyonce in GQ: All the ladies! Put your hands up for feminism

For the sake of feminism, give Beyoncé a break. Contradiction is progress.

Beyoncé, in a high profile interview, has said that men and women are not equal and that simply, that fact is “ridiculous”:
"You know, equality is a myth, and for some reason, everyone accepts the fact that women don't make as much money as men do. I don't understand that. Why do we have to take a backseat? I truly believe that women should be financially independent from their men. And let's face it, money gives men the power to run the show. It gives men the power to define value. They define what's sexy. And men define what's feminine. It's ridiculous."

It is both tragic and hilarious that the most radical thing Beyoncé has said in her 16-year career is accompanied by a photo-shoot in which she’s posing in her knickers for money. Let’s face it, on a website that simultaneously features “The Best Breasts of 2012”, her musings probably won’t even be read. This irony, one that is assumed lost on the pathetic puppet of the patriarchy that is Beyoncé, has been laboured so hard we have forgotten to be constructive. And that is the most dangerous thing of all.

Is this what western feminism has come to? Asks the amazing Hadley Freedman in her damning column. No. It isn’t. This is that cheeky duo, capitalism and patriarchy, doing what they do - and they have been doing it a lot longer than Beyoncé has been providing the beats.Collapse )

Police to investigate former AKB48 singer's 'child porn' picture

TOKYO — Japanese police have launched a probe over a controversial magazine picture of a child in a provocative pose with a naked pop singer, its publisher and reports said Friday.

About 670,000 copies of the popular weekly Young Magazine were pulled from stores ahead of its planned sale last weekend because of a storm over the photograph, which showed singer Tomomi Kasai with a young, apparently Caucasian or Eurasian child cupping her breasts.

The magazine’s publisher Kodansha said two of its employees who handle compliance matters went voluntarily to the police “after receiving a request for a hearing over the issue”.

The child welfare section (of the police department) asked that the picture in question no longer be circulated,” a company spokesman said, adding that police wanted all copies of the magazine taken out of circulation.

In the photograph, the blond-haired boy is shown reaching from behind to cup the breasts of 21-year-old Kasai, who until last year was a member of highly successful all-girl group AKB48, as she stares into the camera.

The photograph, on an inside page of the weekly, was released as part of a publicity drive for a book of pictures of Kasai produced by the same firm.

On Friday, the mass-circulation Mainichi Shimbun newspaper quoted one investigator as saying that police “thought this issue might turn into an international controversy”.

A spokesman for the publisher earlier this week told AFP the company accepted there was a problem with the shot, but declined to offer an opinion on whether the image fell foul of Japan’s child pornography laws.

Whether or not it is child porn, it infringes on socially accepted standards,” he said.

Japan’s huge publishing sector includes magazines and graphic comics containing images that may be considered obscene in other developed countries. It is not uncommon to see people reading such material on commuter trains.
