India sitar maestro Ravi Shankar dies

Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar has died in a hospital in the US, aged 92.

Shankar was admitted to the Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego last week after complaining of breathing difficulties, reports say.

Shankar, who helped bring Indian music to the world, played at Woodstock and the 1967 Monterey Pop festival.

His daughters, sitar player Anoushka Shankar and Grammy award winning singer Norah Jones, are also acclaimed musicians.

Shankar - a three time Grammy winner - and Anoushka had been nominated for the 2013 Grammy awards in the world music category.

Ravi Shankar popularised the sitar - a long-necked Indian lute - and gained widespread international recognition because of his association with George Harrison of The Beatles.

Harrison once called him "the godfather of world music".

Shankar also composed a number of film scores - notably Satyajit Ray's celebrated Apu trilogy (1951-55) and Richard Attenborough's Gandhi (1982) - and collaborated with US composer Philip Glass in Passages in 1990.

In 1999 he was awarded the highest civilian citation in India - the Bharat Ratna, or Jewel of India.

Born into a Bengali family in the ancient Indian city of Varanasi, Ravi Shankar was originally a dancer with his brother's troupe.

He gave up dancing to study the sitar at the age of 18.

For the last years of his life, Ravi Shankar lived in Encinitas, California, with his wife Sukanya.

Rest well, Ravi. :( I'm so thankful I got to see him and Anoushka perform in Toronto in 2005. One of the most incredible performances I've ever seen. RIP.

Oscarwatch: Campaigning & Predictions

We’re a month away from the announcement of the Oscar nominations, and many things happened in the past week or so that affected the current landscape of the race: Zero Dark Thirty came in strong, taking several of the early critics awards for the movie and its director Kathryn Bigelow, Les Miserables proved to be a more divisive movie than the first fawning reactions led us to believe, Argo and Silver Linings Playbook both failed to live up to its early expectations (though the latter remains a strong presence in acting categories), and the much, much hyped as an early frontrunner Lincoln seems on track to repeat the performance of past “important” movies that fail to generate genuine excitement in audiences and just end up feeling like homework: a respectable awards run filled with nominations that just don’t amount to much in the end.

That said, before we get into this week’s predictions, it might be interesting to address something that comes up a lot in the comment section: Campaigning. What is it? Who does it? Is it a product of modern times (spoiler alert: no.)? In short, campaigns are about getting your film to be seen and remembered among the 8 billion screeners that pile up at the end of the year – often, achieving that means holding as many screenings and Q&As as you possibly can, selling a memorable narrative to go along with the film, and getting the most recognizable faces attached to that project (actors and some directors) out there, reinforcing the message for you. So without further ado, let’s start with what the film executives have to say on the matter, move on to some campaigning history, and then hear from an “awards consultant”:

Florence Welch Isn't Here For Your Tomfoolery

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Just call her Florence Welch, friendship healer. The quirky singer drew cheers from her fans during a show in Aberdeen, Scotland, Sunday night after she put her set on pause to break up a brawl in the audience.

Welch, 26, was about halfway through a rousing performance of her hit, "Shake It Out," when she noticed two female fans in the crowd having an argument. She called for her band to stop, and then directly addressed the offending hotheads.

"I can't have a fight in front of me while I'm singing this song! No fighting allowed," she scolded the duo. "I don't know what's happening but I would quite like it to stop. It doesn't matter whose fault it is."

"Excuse me, all of you – stop it," she called out to her fans, who had begun to chuckle nervously. "I'm sorry all of you if you're upset."

One of the quarreling girls appeared to be crying at this point, so the "Cosmic Love" singer then turned concerned.

"Is she OK? Is she going to be alright?" she asked.

Welch then hopped off the stage – barefoot – and gave the girl a hug, insisting that "everyone who's friends, kiss and make up and be good to each other."

The fire-haired singer then climbed back up onto the stage and picked up where she left off.

Demetria sounds off on the X Factor semi-finalists

The second season of The X Factor is down to the final four acts, all vying for the top prize, a $5 million recording contract.

Judge Simon Cowell, who has been the mentor of the Group category, has two of the four: Emblem3, a trio of guys from Huntington Beach, Calif.; and Fifth Harmony, a girl group Cowell created at the start of the show.

Judge Britney Spears has one Teen act left: pint-sized powerhouse Carly Rose Sonenclar.

And judge L.A. Reid has one Over 25 act left: country crooner Tate Stevens.

Demi Lovato, who was the judge/mentor of the Young Adult group and who hasn't been afraid to take on Cowell whenever she felt like it, has seen all of her acts exit the show. So we turned to her for an impartial assessment of the singers who are still standing.

Morrissey Attacks Kate Middleton, Prince William for Nurse Death

Morrissey has slammed the British royal family following the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha. The singer labelled Prince William and Kate "arrogant" in the aftermath of the King Edward Hospital nurse's suspected suicide.

Nurse Jacintha Saldanha was found dead last week after transferring a call in which Australian DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian pretended to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles to gain medical details about the hospitalized Duchess of Cambridge.

The former Smiths frontman called for the royal couple to show remorse for the incident, and that the blame should not be solely placed on the DJs.

He told New Zealand's 3News: "Even with the recent story about the nurse killing herself in King Edward Hospital, there's no blame placed on Kate Middleton, who was in the hospital as far as I could see for absolutely no reason. She feels no shame about the death of this woman, she's saying nothing about the death of this poor woman. The arrogance of the British royals is staggering, absolutely staggering. And why it's allowed to be I really don't know."

He added that the duchess's reported morning sickness was not worth a hospital visit, saying: "Does she have a health condition...? What is the health condition? I mean morning sickness already? So much hoo haw and then suddenly as bright as a button as soon as this poor woman dies she's out of hospital? It doesn't ring true. And I'm sure the Palace and Clarence House put maximum pressure on this poor receptionist and nurse, and of course that's kept away from the press. I'm sure the British press hounded this poor woman to her death, that's kept away. And by this time next week she'll be forgotten. And that's how the British royals work."

Australian radio station 2Day FM have announced that they will donate ad revenue to the family of Jacintha Saldanha.

Morrissey has criticized the British royal family for many years, recently describing Prince Harry as "an idiot". He caused controversy earlier this year by comparing the London 2012 Olympics to Nazi Germany.

Adele, Baby: Singer Facing Fine for Not Registering Newborn

Adele is allegedly facing a fine for failing to register her baby son's birth with the necessary authorities.

According to U.K's "The Sun," Adele and her partner, Simon Konecki, missed the 42-legal deadline to be able to file the needed paperwork. Adele gave birth to a baby boy on Oct. 19, which was 51 days ago.

The paper reports that the singer now faces a $1,600 fine, but says that the oversight is common.

"Cops are hardly going to be banging on their door tomorrow and it's probably just an oversight on their part," source told the paper. "Most
parents register their baby within a couple of weeks because it's a nice thing to do - and because there's a maximum fine of £1,000 if they don't. There's loads of reasons why parents are late and millions of couples don't bother for ages."

Adele has yet to share the name of her son to fans and the public. Just a few weeks ago, her album "21" sold over 10 million copies.

Meet Drew Barrymore's Daughter Olive!

Drew & Olive

Nine weeks after giving birth to her daughter Olive, Drew Barrymore is getting into the groove of being a new mom.

"I couldn't eat or sleep for two weeks, I was just so nervous!" she tells PEOPLE in this week's exclusive cover story.

Starting a family with art consultant Will Kopelman, whom Barrymore married last June, has meant everything to the actress.

"I really wanted a wonderful traditional home for my kid," she says. "Will comes from a strong family, he provides a strong family ... It just makes me so emotional because it's like a miracle."

Despite the overwhelming emotion of love, Barrymore, 37, says no one prepared her for the responsibility she'd feel after her daughter was born.

"You have the highest highs and yet you're facing the biggest fear of, 'How do I keep someone alive?'"

One of Barrymore and Kopelman's favorite things? Singing "Good Morning" from Singin' in the Rain to get little Olive to smile. Says the actress: "It's like the biggest crush I've ever had in my life!"

Gay Characters on Shoda Rhimes' Shows? BUT WHY? (The fact that someone asked this makes me really :(

Shonda Rhimes got asked this question from a clearly idiotic viewer and being Shonda Rhimes she took the opportunity to use the question to answer a much larger societal question.

Question: love your shows but why all the gay and lesbian story lines?

Answer: Because I believe everyone should get to see themselves reflected on TV. EVERYONE. And because I love all my gay and lesbian friends. AND because I think same-sex marriage is the civil rights fight of our era and back when being a person of color was the civil rights fight, people like Norman Lear put black people on TV and helped change some minds. So you know, it's gotta be paid forward. As long as we are willing to sit by while one person is not free, none of us are free.

And FINALLY: because as long as someone feels like it is okay to ask the question "why all the gay people on your shows", then there is still a HUGE problem that needs to be solved. It's like asking "Why all the black people on your shows". (Which is, in fact, why there are also a lot of people of color on my shows . Cause people keep asking. Like it's unusual. Which means we have a LONG way to go). Okay, done preaching.

Keep on preaching Shonda.  We are so with you.

The Reviews Are In For "Viva Forever" - Zig-A-Zig-Nah!

Ouch! In every article, the one getting the most shade is Ab Fab creator, writer, and star, Jennifer Saunders, who wrote the show. One critic noted that the young'ins in attendance were more interested in their iPhones than the actual show.

"so drudgy, so sour and focused on failure," and it doesn't get any better, with the paper lambasting "the iffy performances, gloomy backdrops and a lamentably slow start" before finishing, "you have the makings of a notable West End flop. It’s almost as if the thing has a death wish." - The Daily Mail

Amanda Seyfried Admits To Drinking Before All Talk Show Appearances On 'Late Show'

Amanda Seyfried was very candid about her problems with stage fright during her appearance on "Late Show." She even admitted to swigging some liquid courage before coming out for the interview. According to Seyfried, this is something she has to do before any of her talk show interviews.

While working on "Les Miserables," Seyfried admitted that she missed alcohol. She couldn't drink at all because it hurts the vocal cords.

"I understand that I have a problem, maybe," Seyfried said of her liquid courage. "But you know what? It really gets me through."

When Letterman asked if some day she might find herself in a program, Seyfried replied, "I think one day I’m going to have to learn to live without it."

Clearly this wasn't that day, though, as Letterman brought out Seyfried's choice drink, whiskey, and had a swig with her.

Arrested Development's Episode Order Grows

Production on Arrested Development‘s “comeback” season has hit the pause button, but for the best of reasons — to bring you even more Bluth goodness.

As reported by our sister site Deadline, during the course of shooting the original 10-episode order for Netflix, AD creator Mitch Hurwitz amassed more material than planned, as he dreamed up new scenes and story arcs on the fly.

As such, Hurwitz — along with producing studios 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV — got Netflix to greenlight an additional two to five episodes, bringing the total order to as many as 15. Production was then halted (until late January) so that Hurwitz can review the extra material and decide how and where it will be used to populate additional episodes.

A rep for Netflix told Deadline that as of now “we are not confirming or announcing the final episode count, but we are sure fans will be thrilled when we do.”

Even with the reported extra episodes, the new season of Arrested Development will still drop all at once, on Netflix, sometime in the spring.

Tame Impala announce biggest ever show

Tame Impala have announced details for their biggest ever show.

The Australian psych rockers, whose second album 'Lonerism' topped NME's Albums Of The Year list, will play London's Hammersmith Apollo on June 25.

Reacting to getting the Number One slot, the band's Kevin Parker said he finds it difficult to be completely satisfied with his own work. "You never really finish an album," he says, "you just run out of time."

He added: "When you're making an album, it's very difficult to still be in love with it at the end in the same way you were when started it. By the end of 'Lonerism', I was doubting everything. I worked myself into a state of mind where I was questioning everything."

However, he also sais he now believes the album is his best work: "I had that moment with every one of the record's songs where I'd feel like it was the best thing I'd ever written. I still think it's the best bunch of music I've made so far."

This is an excuse to talk about Lonerism/Tame Impala in general tbh.

YA Book Post- Whitewashing Covers

Whitewashing Covers, part eleventy, and Elliot's ethnicity

On the YALSA blog, there is a discussion of white washing on the cover of YA novels, and one of the novels mentioned is For Darkness Shows the Stars. There are many inaccuracies in this article (including stating that LIAR was released with the original cover), and I’m not sure if the librarian who wrote it has actually read my book or is instead simply repeating something she read on a reader blog.

I have not responded to any mention of this supposed “problem” with the cover of For Darkness Shows the Stars, because I have personally only ever seen it mentioned on a reader blog where the blogger in question hadn’t read the book, but instead took an out-of-context quote from yet another blogger. I don’t really feel it’s my place to get involved with reader reactions to my book. If there is a failure in communication between an author and any particular reader, well, that just goes with the territory. No writer gets through to every reader.

Anne Hathaway Finds the Brouhaha About Her Crotch Shot ‘Sad’

Anne Hathaway

A pervy upskirt shot of underwearless Anne Hathaway getting out of a limo at a New York premiere of Les Miserables has been making the rounds on that beautiful formless mass of the collective human id that we call the Interwebz. This morning on the TODAY show, she responded eloquently to host/human toejam Matt Lauer, who leered: "Seen a lot of you lately." Guh-ross.

She replied:

"It was obviously an unfortunate incident. It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment, and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I'm sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies the sexuality of unwilling participants. Which brings us back to Les Mis [...] So lets get back to Les Mis."

Paul McCartney Reportedly Replacing Kurt Cobain in Nirvana Reunion .

We should’ve known this date would bring about some weird news. The Guardian reports that Paul McCartney is set to take the place of Kurt Cobain during a set at tonight’s 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden.

Surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic haven’t played together in 20 years—save a few one-offs and Novoselic’s appearance on the latest Foo Fighters album—but will perform a new song they’ve been working on with McCartney.

According to a spokesman, Grohl asked McCartney to jam recently and the music icon found himself playing with the whole band—including guitarist Pat Smear, who toured with the band near the end of its career and is also a member of Foo Fighters.

“I didn’t really know who they were,” McCartney was quoted in the article. “They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ And somebody whispered to me: ’That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

12-12-12 The Concert for Sandy Relief will bring together the likes of the Rolling Stones, Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen and as the above proves, much, much more. It begins tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST and will broadcast live on select television networks and in select theaters. It will also stream online.

James Arthur: Most explosive X Factor opening sales, ever!

Sources tell us Ariel Winter and her mother, Chrystal Workman, have worked out a settlement in the "Modern Family" star's guardianship case -- and attorneys for both sides are hammering out details right now ... TMZ has learned.

We're told the lawyers are in the courthouse where a hearing was scheduled to go down today ... possibly to determine if Ariel's mom or her older sister Shanelle Gray would be granted permanent guardianship.

Chrystal is waiting outside the courtroom, and just said loudly ... "They're stripping everything from me."

Shanelle has been Ariel's guardian since allegations surfaced back in October that Chrystal was emotionally and physically abusing Ariel.

Harry and Taylor’s PDA at pub date in rural England

It seems Harry Styles is keen to show off new love Taylor Swift to everyone, particularly his family. The One Direction singer took Taylor to a pub near Sheffield, North England last night. They met Harry's sister Gemma, who goes to University nearby, at the Rising Sun hotel in Bamford, where – an onlooker at the pub tells us – they were looking very coupley indeed. Taylor was even overheard telling Gemma: “We have so much in common – it’s so great we get along.”

The restaurant-goer said: “Harry and Taylor were putting spoons on their noses and fooling around with each other and taking photos of each other. After that, they were stood talking and Harry kept putting his hand on Taylor’s bum. Taylor had her arms around him a lot and they were really close all night.”

“They seemed like they got along really well and they got on with Harry’s sister and did seem like a normal couple. They were sat together opposite Harry’s sister and you could see Harry’s hand on Taylor’s lap the whole evening."

“Harry had a turkey dinner with orange juice and a Christmas pudding after,” they added. “Taylor had oven-baked cod, but didn’t have a dessert and was drinking diet coke.”

Harry and Taylor were then spotted at a Tescos near his mum’s house in Cheshire later that evening, so it seems he was keen to show the American singer off to all his nearest and dearest.

Update: Harry and Taylor in Bowness-on-Windermere in the Lake District today

BOWNESS was touched by stardom today as not one but two pop stars were in town for a visit.

American songstress Taylor Swift and One Direction star Harry Styles, who have just gone public with their relationship, were snapped outside Pandora jewellery shop on Crag Brow with manager Claire Dibbs.

Claire, 24, said: “They were just walking past Pandora and one of my colleagues saw them. Screaming, I ran to grab my phone and got one of the girls to take a photograph. I was hyperventilating. I am a big Harry Styles fan, but I have to say Taylor Swift was just so nice to me. I was asking her how long she is in the area for.

I think they were just in for a day visiting with his parents. They had been to the Beatrix Potter shop and had loads of bags. We tried to persuade them in so he could buy her a nice shiny ring, but they were having none of it.

Ice-T, CoCo Austin Step Out Together After Photo Scandal

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Ice still loves CoCo.

Just days after a very public outburst over wife CoCo Austin's PDA-packed pictures with another man, Ice-T is ready to forgive, forget, and move on. On Monday, Dec. 10, the rapper and Law & Order actor, 54, reunited with his glamour model spouse, 33, in New York City, where they hit up an event at the Last Rites Gallery.

Wearing matching black outfits -- complete with matching leather jackets -- the Ice Loves CoCo stars put up a united front as they happily posed together for photographers.

Incidentally, posing for the camera is what got Austin in trouble with her husband in the first place. On Friday, Dec. 8, the married model surfaced in a series of affectionate Instagram snapshots with rapper AP.9 in Vegas, where she is currently starring in the burlesque revue Peepshow. (Austin made her debut earlier this month, replacing former headliner and fellow blonde bombshell Holly Madison, who is nearly seven months pregnant with her first child.)

The photos, which have since been deleted, show Austin cozing up to AP.9 as he kisses her cheek and buries his face in her neck. Not surprisingly, Ice-T (born Tracy Marrow) was less than thrilled to see his wife of 11 years with another man.

"Most of [the pics are] disrespectful and in bad taste," he tweeted Dec. 8. "She's made me look and feel like s--t."

Austin initially tried to downplay the incident but later issued a remorseful mea culpa on Twitter: "Ice is right, the pics I took with this man were in poor taste & I disrespected my husband," she shared. "However the pics were the only thing that happened."

"I feel so sad. The bottom line is I love Ice & I can understand why he's upset," she added. "There's no excuse for my actions. I'm so sorry baby & to everyone."

CW orders 'Hunger Games'-style reality show

Ready for America’s Next Top Katniss?

The CW has ordered two new reality shows, including one that’s clearly Hunger Games-inspired.

In The Hunt, 12 tributes teams of two are dropped into the wilderness without food, water or shelter. They must compete in a game where they’ll rely on their physicality, survival skills and hunting skills to endure the harsh conditions and kill “capture” one another.

The second new CW reality series is called Perfect Score. This is a dating show where two friends compete to see who can pick their ideal mate from a group of–

Yeah, so back to The Hunt. The competition lasts a full month and the winner will receive a cash prize. No premiere date is set.

It’s been awhile since any reality show really made a successful run at a Survivor-style competition, so it will be interesting to see how this one turns out. The order follows The CW developing a drama series, The Selection, that’s been compared to The Hunger Games (the project is still alive, I’m told), and toying with the (ill-advised) idea of adapting ultra-violent Japanese cult favorite Battle Royale, which has a very similar storyline to The Hunger Games.

Perhaps The Hunt will be a way for the network to capitalize (Capitolize?) on the hit franchise, like The Vampire Diaries post-Twilight and Arrow post-Dark Knight.

So who volunteers?

Who volunteers as contestant?!

The Pope Joins Twitter....I'm Not Kidding

The Vatican just got considerably more social media savvy.

Pope Benedict XVI sent out his first Tweet on Wednesday using the handle @Pontifex (loosely translated from Latin to mean "bridge builder").

"Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter," he wrote. "Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart."

The pontiff sent the first Tweet himself on an iPad in front of a public audience in the Vatican. He will not send out every Tweet personally, but his new form of outreach is still sure to connect Catholics across the globe.

"Offer everything you do to the Lord, ask his help in all the circumstances of daily life and remember that he is always beside you," he later Tweeted.

"Asking For It": Rihanna, Victim-Blaming and the Problem with Sympathy

Although Ricco states that Rihanna has the agency to be with whomever she likes, she poses a central question:

Benedict Cumberbatch and J.J. Abrams Talk About Star Trek Into Darkness‘ Villain

I, for one, am not buying that whole “John Harrison” thing. J.J. Abrams, you’ve trolled us before, and you’re doing it again. It’s getting frustrating. I’m not sure how much more of this I can take. KHAAAAAAAAAAN!

In separate interviews Abrams and Benedict Cumberbatch dropped some intriguing hints about Cumberbatch’s character in Star Trek Into Darkness, both of them identifying him as someone with a motivation rooted more in idealism than in a simple thirst for vengeance or power.

Marianne Faithfull to re-release landmark album "Broken English"

Marianne Faithfull’s definitive album Broken English is reissued in this luxury package (January 28th 2013) which includes the album version released in 1979, the original ‘lost’ band sessions recording, a mouth-watering selection of bonus tracks and the Derek Jarman directed short film of Witches SongThe Ballad of Lucy Jordan and Broken English.

On its release in late ‘79 Broken English was an instant critical and commercial success bringing Marianne a new image, an international following, a Grammy nomination and the confidence to record more of her own compositions. The beautiful blonde muse, the wistful teenager who whispered of tears going by, was reborn.  The Marianne who roared out of the traps on Broken English was a different animal altogether: wild, and feral, with a voice ravaged by experience and betrayal. There have been few comebacks as startling as this, few records as unexpected as this… “I thought I was going to die, that this was my last chance to make a record. It’s this sense, that “fucking hell, before I die, I’m going to show you bastards who I am.”

Le1f Admits to Trolling Das Racist, Wants You to Give His Stolen Gameboy Back

Who: New York rapper/producer Le1f (pronounced "leaf," his birth name is Khalif Diouf), and don't forget the number where the "i" should be, making his name look like it's written out in some hybrid language from outer space. Why? "Because I feel more like an alien than a gay rapper," Le1f jokes, playfully dismissing the "whoa, a gay man makes rap music" articles that got him attention, but also have boxed him in since the release of his debut, Dark York, earlier this year. But, let's get it out of the way: Yes, Le1f is a gay MC. His raps playfully subvert the hetero-normative tough-guy traditions of hip-hop — referencing Public Enemy's boast "My Uzi Weighs a Ton" on "My Oozy"; sampling Lil Jon shouting "gangsta!" on "Gayngsta"— and they're delivered in a hiccupping, fast-rap delivery that dips and dives around open-eared production touching on house, glitch, and even some Soulja Boy-simple snap and clap.

Trolling In The Deep: Even if you've not yet experienced Dark York, you're probably familiar with Le1f's most famous production: the beat for Das Racist's debut single, "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell." What you probably don't know, however, is that it's firmly in the tradition of the "vogue beat," a start-stop-start-drop-repeat rhythm extracted from Masters At Work's 1991 classic house single "Ha Dance" that still defines vogue and ball culture's dance moves. "I was kind of trolling [Das Racist]," Le1f admits, "it's just hilarious to give them a vogue beat!" Le1f continues, joshing his joking-not-joking friends: "I think [Heems] kind of knew it was a vogue beat, but did he really know? He tried to pretend he knew, like, a year later, but never said anything about it. I was tricking them into rapping over a vogue beat." Thank Le1f for adding yet another layer of cultural complexity to what might be the smartest dumb song of the 2000s.

Outkast's Big Boi talks about his amazing new album 'Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors'

Big Boi, 'Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors': OutKast Rapper Shares Biggest Lessons From His Mama

To say Big Boi has already made his stamp in music history would be an understatement. As one half of the legendary duo OutKast, he has sold millions of albums over the span of his career, and won six Grammys, including the coveted album of the year award, only given to two hip-hop acts.

Despite his many accolades, the diminutive rapper, born Antwan Patton, is a family man at heart. The title of his second album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, which hit shelves yesterday (Dec. 11), comes directly from his grandmother.

"It was going to be the title of my grandmother's book. But she didn't want to put the book out because she said she was going to fuck up everybody in our family household, because she was going to tell all the family secrets," Big Boi tells The BoomBox.

His family similarly made the final call on the album's cover, which features his face in splashes of colorful paint.

"The colors represent emotion," Big Boi reveals. "We was looking at football and we had cousins there, and I had like three family members passing it around, taking a vote
. All the kids wanted this, and all these people wanted this one, but all three concepts of what was supposed to be the cover actually are incorporated in the artwork of each record. Each song has its own stand alone piece of art."

ONTD Original:...Stacey Dash Is Thirsty?

A few days ago, we here at ONTD were treated to a teaser for Stacey Dash's scripted comedy series - Stacey Dash Is Normal. A lot of the commenters were confused - is it a web series? is she trying to have it picked up by a network? And most importantly, what is this low budget mess? This is not the Paul Ryan sex scandal that I some people were hoping for.

The general confusion has not deterred our lovely Stacey. She decided to tweet the link to all her celeb friends so far she has tweeted - MTV, TMZ, BigBoi, D L Hugley, Magic Johnson, THR, Variety, Nick Canon Funkmaster flex, Wendy Williams, Comedy Central, Adult Swim...Rihanna and many, many more. The only person to publicly respond as of this moment has been Sean Kingston. Maybe her other celeb friends are sh*t Nazis and they don't like being called out?

Inspite of all her tweets and coverage on black blogs and news sites, Stacey's teaser had only managed to amass 22,578 views. I didn't see any tweets to ONTD, I guess our tweet got lost in cyberspace.

Gillian Anderson Joins Cast Bryan Fuller's New TV Series "HANNIBAL"

'Hannibal' casts 'X-Files' star Gillian Anderson -- EXCLUSIVE

Very exciting casting news: Sci-fi fan-favorite Gillian Anderson is returning to broadcast television after a decade to join writer-producer Bryan Fuller’s serial-killer thriller Hannibal.

And perhaps the best part is the role she’s playing….

In a multi-episode arc on the upcoming NBC drama, Anderson is going to play Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier — murderous psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s (Mads Mikkelsen) own therapist.

“Every therapist needs their own head examined and we are ecstatic that Gillian Anderson has chosen Hannibal to mark her return to American television after 10 years to portray Dr. Lecter’s personal psychiatrist,” Fuller said in a statement. “Her intelligence and sophistication, not to mention her pedigree of ground-breaking TV, make her the perfect actress to match wits and psychological manipulations with one of the greatest villains of pop culture. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Since Fox’s classic TV series The X-Files concluded in 2002, Anderson has appeared in mini-series such as Encore’s recent Moby Dick adaptation and British TV series like The Fall.

According to, Anderson was actually in the running to play Clarice Starling in the 2001 big-screen version of Hannibal after Jodie Foster dropped out of the Silence of the Lambs sequel. But Anderson’s X-Files contract reportedly forbid her from playing another FBI agent.

The actress joins a rather stellar cast on Hannibal. In addition to leads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne, the series has also signed on Eddie Izzard, Gina Torres, Molly Shannon, Ellen Greene and Chelan Simmons. No premiere date has been set, but insiders expect the show will likely debut in late Spring.

Warrior Flops, RED Number 1 Again

Ke$ha's new album, "Warrior," failed to reach the Top 5 on Billboard's Hot 200 chart, selling only 85,000 copies; as a result, it was lapped by Taylor Swift's "Red." Swift's album sold 167,000 copies, a 22-percent increase over last week.

Wiz Khalifa came in second, moving 141,000 copies of his second studio album, "O.N.I.F.C."

"Warrior" also represents a big drop off from Ke$ha's first LP, "Animal." That album debuted at No. 1 in an admittedly dead stretch of January 2012, but nonetheless moved 152,000 units.

The newer album represented a sonic shift for Ke$ha, who reunited with not only hit-makers like Dr. Luke but also worked with rockers like The Black Keys' Patrick Carney and The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne. The singer also told The Huffington Post that th music represents her present state of mind. "I write about my life in my music and I have very little filter so basically it would be impossible for me to separate my music and the rest of my life," Ke$ha said. "My music is a representation of my life and vice-versa."

Swift's "Red" sold 1.2 million copies in its first week, easily outpacing all the competition. Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" popped Swift out of the top slot last week, but the young country-lite singer reclaimed the spot in this week's tepid field.

Other chart notes, via Billboard: Bruno Mars overcame Britney Spears (with and Rihanna on the singles chart as his "Locked Out of
Heaven" outsold "Scream & Shout" and "Diamonds."

Hugh Jackman Cries On TV Remembering His Mother's Abandonment

In an emotional interview Hugh Jackman broke down thinking back to childhood memories.

In a recent TV interview with 60 Minutes Sunday, the Australian actor, Hugh Jackman opened up about his childhood. Talking about the day his mother left their home in Australia for the UK brought the 'Les Miserables' actor to tears.

"I can remember the morning she left, it's weird the things you pick up," Jackman said with tears in his eyes.

"I remember her being in a towel around her head and saying goodbye, must have been the way she said goodbye. As I went off to school, when I came back, there was no one there in the house."

"The next day there was a telegram from England, Mom was there. And then that was it. I don't think she thought for a second it would be forever. I think she thought it was, 'I just need to get away, and I`ll come back.'"

Lindsay Lohan Unfollows The Wanted's Max George After He Called Her a Groupie

After following The Wanted for several days, Lindsay Lohan now seems to distance herself from the boyband as she's no longer following Max George on Twitter. Her move comes hot on heels of a new interview done by her crush, during which he called her a "groupie."

Max made such comment about LiLo when asked by ITN reporter backstage at Capital FM's Jingle Bell Ball if he's dating LiLo. "No, what's the right word for her? A yeah, a groupie!" he answered, to which his fellow bandmate jokingly added, "She is probably hiding in our suitcase right now!"

Lindsay Lohan has been labeled as The Wanted's groupie by the media since she hopped on their tour bus. She didn't seem to object it though and continued to follow them in their tour. It was apparently a different story when the labeling came straight from Max himself.

Regardless of the rumor that she's mad at Max over his "groupie" comment, the troubled actress still follows three other members of the British boyband, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness and Nathan Sykes. She also tweets, "I heart the UK."

Before she unfollowed 24-year-old Max, the 26-year-old redhead re-tweeted his message that read, "Back in England!!!!:)... Can I make it to the ball tonight... #lawson." She also posted a picture of his hoodie, "Missing something? @MaxTheWanted."

The Wanted are back to their home country after touring the U.S., while LiLo stays Stateside. She's facing numerous legal woes including misdemeanor charges stemming from a car accident last summer after she's suspected of giving false information to cops.

Jada Pinkett-Smith Addresses The Problems Facing Today’s Women And Men In Relationships

So Jada really went there…and I’m not mad at it.

Jada Pinkett Smith has obvious concerns about the state of relationships between men and women nowadays and has posted a long blog to her Facebook page to address them.  In her latest post, Jada talks about how the true inner beauty of a woman over time has taken a backseat to superficiality of “weaves and red bottom shoes,” while men use money as a status symbol and as a way of buying love. Jada also believes that women today have no voice and have been reduced to being just pleasure toys. She states that our culture promotes women looking good without saying anything meaningful, and men have become so frustrated with insecurity that it often leads to domestic violence in the home.  Jada also says if one person in the relationship is lost, then the entire union is doomed because the couple are supposed to balance each other out..

Britney Spears Number One On Top-Earning Women In Music 2012 List

Britney Spears earned over $50 million in 2010—$64 million, to be exact. This year, she might describe her financial gains with the words to one of her best-known songs: "Oops! I did it again."

The 31-year-old pop star pulled in $58 million over the past year, more than any other woman in the music industry. Her latest album, Femme Fatale, was certified platinum in the U.S. and the ensuing tour accounted for the bulk of her bucks. Endorsements and a fragrance line with Elizabeth Arden added millions more to her coffers. Not too bad, considering Spears' troubles just a few years ago.

"I think people love the comeback story—Britney never really finished her run as a superstar," says marketing guru Steve Stoute, author of The Tanning of America. Adds music attorney Lori Landew, who helped sign Spears to her first record deal as a teenager: "Britney has an electricity that connects with audiences on screen and off, and it is that intangible quality that always seems to leave her fans, old and new, breathless."

The Hobbit’s Martin Freeman on dwarves, Gollum and Leonard Nimoy

Martin Freeman had some hairy prosthetic feet to fill as Bilbo in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, but the acclaimed actor was up to the challenge. We sat down in an exclusive interview and quizzed Freeman about filming the much-anticipated trilogy, his life in Middle-Earth, and, most importantly, his thoughts on Leonard's Nimoy's classic song "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins." Read our full interview with the Shire's best burglar now.

How did Peter Jackson direct you to handle the ring?

Martin Freeman: With curiosity, I think. That was what we kind of went for. When I first see it, when it drops out of Gollum's pouch in the goblin tunnels, to just literally notice it and go "oh." It's just a flash of color in this dark place. A flash of gold. And as I get closer just to have curiosity and not to imbue it with a great kind of force or a sense of epic-ness. Like a trinket. Then there's something magpie-ish about Bilbo and he thinks, oh I'll have that that might come in handy. But there's no sense of a semi religious import.

BBC2's The Hour wears me out...

The Hour wears me out. In between yelling at news producer Bel Rowley, “Call yourself an investigative journalist? You couldn’t uncover a duvet,” I project my own emotions on to it, just to liven things up a bit.

It’s such an infuriating drama, a chilly and remote thing that is in love with its own reflection. The Hour (Tonight on BBC2) is a vain woman, standing in front of the mirror, preening. The first series was a yawn that audiences by and large decided they could live without. Benedict Cumberbatch: I’m Not Playing Khan In Star Trek Into Darkness

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- British actor Benedict Cumberbatch is the newest member of the “Star Trek” franchise, but he assured Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz, although he is the new “Trek” bad guy, he is not playing legendary villain Khan in the upcoming second installment of the origin series from J.J. Abrams.

“A few have asked that which is strange,” Benedict told Scott on Monday, joking about it being “strange,” considering it was wildly speculated he would play the youthful version of the character originated by Ricardo Montalban in a 1967 episode of the “Star Trek” television series – “Space Seed” — and later in the 1980s film, “The Wrath of Khan.”

“I play a character called John and not that other name,” Benedict continued. “It’s interesting. Speculation is speculation and that’s all fun.”

On Tuesday, Benedict did reveal, however, some new details to Access’ MovieMantz at the junket for the first nine minutes of the film, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” which was first screened for journalists over the weekend.

“I play John Harrison who’s a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right,” the Brit said. “He’s somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He’s got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathize with the reasons he’s doing what he’s doing — not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes. But it was a great ride, not just because he’s the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points.”

The actor, who also stars as Sherlock Holmes in PBS’ “Sherlock,” admitted he wasn’t looking to see a “Star Trek” film when the origin story of the reboot franchise first came out.

“I wasn’t that interested in seeing a ‘Star Trek’ movie, I’ll be honest. I know you are a Trekspert, so forgive me,” the Brit told Scott. “It’s not out of any loathing of the genre or sci-fi or anything. I love it, but I just wasn’t that interested. And people said, ‘No, you should just go and see it. It’s a great film.’ And lo and behold, then all the Trekkie in me was reborn as well and I was just over the moon excited about them all meeting for the first time. I thought it was such an imaginative prequel.”

And Benedict noted the new film takes things even further.

“Without a doubt, it is truly epic,” he said. “It’s a big film. The scale of it is so much bigger than the first.”

Benedict said he is aware this film is important to lifelong “Star Trek” fans, but he had to please his director, first and foremost.

“You can’t try and fulfill everyone’s expectations. As an actor, my role in this is to fulfill my director’s promise in me and yeah, if I fulfill his trust in me, that’s it. That’s a job done. And then, I have full respect for the fans’ response. I know that they own this… A lot of people have grown [up] with this all of their lives… And that is important to me, but if you go about trying to please everybody, it’s a short way to madness.

“It would paralyze you if you went to all of the comments… Having said that, I’ll be over the moon if the fans are happy,” he added.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” hits theaters on May 17, 2013.

The Hobbit wins delay on release of 'mockbuster' Age of the Hobbits

The makers of forthcoming fantasy trilogy The Hobbit have won a temporary restraining order against a so-called "mockbuster" film accused of trading on the global publicity surrounding the release of the JRR Tolkien adaptation.

California federal judge Philip Gutierrez ruled on Monday that Age of the Hobbits, from specialist independent studio The Asylum, was confusingly similar to Peter Jackson's return to Middle-earth. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due for release on Friday in the US and UK, but Age of the Hobbits now looks less likely to find its way into cinemas.

The Asylum is known for its series of "mockbuster" films, including 2009's The Terminators, 2010's Titanic II and 2011's Almighty Thor. The studio had argued that its own Hobbits had nothing to do with Middle-earth, being instead the "real-life" variety of diminutive humans discovered by scientists nine years ago in the Lesser Sunda Islands archipelago near Java.
