Ben Whishaw Joins Lilting

It’s been a heck of a year for Ben Whishaw, between a hefty set of roles in Cloud Atlas (which UK audiences will have to wait until February 22 to see) and a little movie called Skyfall. And that’s without mentioning the return of superb small-screen drama The Hour. For his next job, he’s landed a role in low-budget pic Lilting.

The title does not refer to kids sent into a sugary rage by tropical fruit drink Lilt. Instead, Hong Khaou has written and will direct a sensitive tale about people struggling with the language barrier.

Lilting will follow a Chinese mother (Cheng Pei Pei) grieving for the untimely death of her son. He’d been her translator and support system in the UK after they arrived and now she’s stranded.

But she bonds with his ex-boyfriend (Whishaw), a man she only thought was his roommate. Despite their many differences, they form an understanding and help each other deal with the loss.

Khaou has won funding from micro-budget movie percolator Microwave, which also provided the backing for Ben Drew’s Ill Manors.

Aside from the aforementioned Cloud Atlas, Whishaw will next be seen in Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem and has been rumoured to be taking the role of hacker Lurker in Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse adaptation.

Obama Oppa Doesn't Care About Psy's Anti-U.S. Military Past

South Korean rapper and Internet sensation PSY is apologizing to Americans for participating in anti-U.S. protests several years ago.

Park Jae-sang, who performs as PSY, issued a statement Friday after reports surfaced that he had participated in concerts protesting the U.S. military presence in South Korea during the early stages of the Iraq war.

At a 2004 concert, the "Gangnam Style" rapper performs a song with lyrics about killing "Yankees" who have been torturing Iraqi captives and their families "slowly and painfully." During a 2002 concert, he smashed a model of a U.S. tank on stage.

"While I'm grateful for the freedom to express one's self, I've learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I'm deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted," he wrote in the statement. "I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused by those words."

The 34-year-old rapper says the protests were part of a "deeply emotional" reaction to the war and the death of two Korean school girls, who were killed when a U.S. military vehicle hit them as they walked alongside the road. He noted anti-war sentiment was high around the world at the time.

Cheryl Cole is suing the X Factor for $2.3 million!

You Owe Me $2.3 Mil ...
Even Though You Fired Me!

Cheryl Cole says she signed a VERY lucrative deal to be a judge on "X Factor" back in 2011 ... and even though producers fired her ass before Season 1 ever got off the ground, she wants her money ... more than $2 MILLION ... this according to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ.

Cole -- a British pop star -- says she signed a "Pay or Play" contract with Blue Orbit Productions that guaranteed her $1.8 million for Season 1 ... and $2 million for Season 2 ... even if she never appeared on the show.

Cole says producers also agreed to pay her a $100k wardrobe allowance for each season, $25k for a stylist, $15k-per-month for lodging in L.A. and $2,500 per month for general living expenses.

As TMZ previously reported, Cole got the chop before Season 1 aired ... because producers believed the American audience wouldn't understand her super-Britishy accent. She was replaced by Nicole Scherzinger ... who was also fired and replaced by the very successful, iconic and multi-talented fan favourite Britney Spears.

According to the lawsuit, Cole says producers did pay her the $1.8 mil for Season 1 ... but stiffed her on the $2 mil for season 2, as well as all of the bonus money for expenses.

Cole is demanding more than $2.3 million in damages. [TMZ]

Next X Factor winner Christopher Maloney's grandmother gets death threats

Parading his nan at every opportunity has come at a price.

Speaking to Reveal magazine this week, Chris said he and his nan have been trying to ignore the messages sent by crazy fans of the show.

“I never thought being on a TV show could warrant death threats,” he said. “The most recent threat was from someone saying they were going to hunt my Nan down and kill her.

“It is frightening, but we try to ignore it, otherwise we’ll be paranoid and looking over our shoulder all the time.”

Bruno Mars Rocks ‘The Graham Norton Show’

With just days to go until his sophomore album drops, Bruno Mars is kicking his promo tour into high gear. During his trip to the U.K., the Grammy-winning crooner stopped by “The Graham Norton Show” to perform his hit single “Locked Out of Heaven” with his band and sit on the couch for a quick chat.

He revealed that “Money Make Her Smile” off his new album Unorthodox Jukebox was inspired by his visit to a seedy strip club in Paris. After hearing the DJ play “Just the Way You Are,” Bruno recorded new material that would lend itself better to the environment.

“On this album, I definitely have some songs that I’ll be proud of the next time I’m in Paris at a strip club,” he laughed.

Irate fans of Justin Bieber and boy band One Direction took to social media this week to voice their

Indie-pop band fun and rapper Frank Ocean led the 2013 nominations, tying with The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, Jay-Z and Kanye West for six nods. But The Recording Academy overlooked some of the year’s biggest and most commercially successful artists in Wednesday’s nominations.

While Bieber, 18, who won three American Music Awards in November, stayed quiet on his omission, his manager Scooter Braun took to Twitter.

“Grammy board u blew it on this one. the hardest thing to do is transition, keep the train moving. The kid delivered. Huge successful album, sold out tour, and won people over. ... This time he deserved to be recognized,” Braun posted in a series of tweets.

Many of Bieber’s 31 million Twitter fans quickly followed suit, with hashtags such as #BieberForGrammys trending on the micro-blogging service.

The Canadian singer, who has never won a Grammy, in June released album Believe, showcasing a more grown-up image. The album, which produced top 10 hits Boyfriend and As Long As You Love Me, has sold more than 1.1 million copies.

British boy band One Direction was also left empty-handed despite their debut album Up All Night having topped the Billboard 200 album chart.

The quintet has performed sold-out shows across the world and won three MTV video music awards earlier this year.

The Grammy Awards are voted on by members of The Recording Academy and recognise achievement in 81 categories.

Lady Gaga, rapper Nicki Minaj and Korea’s Psy also failed to snag any nominations.

While Gaga hasn’t released new music this year, focusing on her global tour, Minaj released Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which topped the Billboard 200 chart and spawned singles such as Starships.

Psy may have YouTube’s most watched video ever with Gangnam Style, — over 897 million views — but he missed out on becoming the first Korean artist to receive a Grammy nod.

The Grammy Awards will be handed out at a live performance show and ceremony on February 10 in Los Angeles.

Tom Cruise Uncovers Humanity On A Ravaged Earth In First Oblivion Trailer

The follow-up film from Tron: Legacy director Joe Kosinski, and featuring Tom Cruise in his first sci-fi role since War of the Worlds, next spring's Oblivion is looking like one of the most intriguing original stories of next year-- and now we're finally getting an idea of what it will look like. A trailer for the film, with Spanish subtitles and posted by the film's Colombian distributor, has popped up online; it's not the official American trailer, but it seems safe to assume we'll be seeing something very similar to this in theaters soon.

Union J's Josh Cuthbert Denies Ella Henderson Romance: 'It Would Be Odd'

Ella Henderson may have recently declared her love for Union J's Josh Cuthbert, NOT rumoured romance George Shelley, but the band member has admitted that he DOESN'T want to date her because it would be 'odd'. Poor Ella!

The former X Factor contestant said that whilst George is a best friend, she hopes that a romance would develop between her and his band mate Josh. She previously told Look magazine: "Let me explain it like this. George is my best friend. Jaymi is like my brother, JJ is hilarious and, yeah, like..."  And while Ella is close to Josh now, she expects their relationship to heat up once they leave the show next month.  She said: "At the moment it's hard to say. He's still in the competition. As soon as we're both out of it, it's going to go boom."  "At the moment [we are just] very close and good friends, but after the competition, I'd love to see him. I do want to spend time with him. Only time will tell."

But, now both acts have been booted off the competition, will a romance blossom in the real world?  Not according to the band member himself! Josh has since told Now magazine: "That'd be odd. I'm just like her big brother." Adding, "I heard a rumour about what she was meant to have said, but I haven't spoken to her about it. I'm being honest."

Ooo awks! Do you think we have another X Factor romance on our hands or is Ella going to be left heartbroken?

Gangnam Nationalism: Why Psy’s anti-American rap shouldn’t surprise you

2 articles by the Washington Post that give complementary information, if you're still interested.

South Korea’s Psy performs at a 2006 concert in Incheon. (Chung Sung-Jun — Getty Images)

Nationalism is a complicated force, and it might not always mean the same thing within one culture as it does in another. Keep that in mind as you read about how Psy, the South Korean rapper beloved in the United States for his mega-hit Gangnam Style, participated in two anti-American performances a few years before he became a big star here. And keep in mind that this is bigger than just Psy and his performances, particularly as controversy islikely to build over President Obama and his family’s plans to attend a charity concert featuring the Korean pop star.

In 2002, Psy walked onto the stage at a massive performance meant to protest the large U.S. military presence in South Korea. He wore an outlandish, glittered red costume and gold face paint. As the crowd cheered him on, Psy lifted a large model of a U.S. tank and, to cheers and applause, smashed it against the stage

I actually hope this will be blown out of proportion because it will make a huge debate about american troops' behaviours outside of America and finally, after so many years, things will start changing. That would also save PSY's career. This scandal needs to get bigger and bigger!

Upcoming 'Mass Effect 3' DLC Might Be A Big Deal

How big? According to Eurogamer, big enough to require an eight-person writing team which will include lead writer Mac Walters. The untitled DLC is being developed by BioWare's Edmonton studio, and according to one of the company's designers, that number represents pretty much the entire writing team there.

But BioWare's not just throwing a bunch of writers at the next story set (presumably) in and around "Mass Effect 3."

Seth Green is making his "Mass Effect 3" DLC debut in a return to his role as Normandy pilot/resident joker, Joker. Also returning is "Mass Effect 3" composer Sam Hulick, whose work can also be found in "Baldur's Gate" and "Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad" as well as "Mass Effect 2."

So what will the next piece of DLC entail? It's anyone's guess, but each one has dealt with the same problem of getting their hooks into a player who may or may not have already finished the main story, making the stakes feel a little less urgent. While the excellent "From Ashes" added a new crewman to the Normandy, subsequent installments have really explored backstory in curious ways or attempted to up your readiness for the final, likely already-completed final battle.

Shonda Rhimes: Katherine Heigl Hurt Me

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Shonda Rhimes and her Scandal star Kerry Washington are the focus of Sunday's all-new episode of Oprah's Next Chapter, and in addition to talking about the importance of their addictive Thursday night series, Rhimes looks back on one of her more frustrating professional moments.

In 2008, Katherine Heigl notoriously pulled her name from Emmy contention, saying that she didn't feel the material she was given that year warranted consideration. "On some level, it stung," Rhimes tells Oprah Winfrey. "But on some level I was not surprised. When people show you who they are, believe them. I carry that with me a lot. It has served me well."

Winfrey then goes on to ask Rhimes what accomplishment she's most proud of. "I'm most proud of the fact that I have figured out how to exist as both a creative person and artist and a businesswoman and a manager," she says. "Because those two things do not go together. For a long time I really had a hard time with the idea that I was supposed to be this person who lived inside her head and created things, but also managed a bunch of people and had to lead a group of people."

Rhimes adds, "But those two things came together, and I'm really proud of how that works now."

'Journey' Earns the Videogame World's First Grammy Nomination

The Recording Academy, presenter of the Grammy awards, revealed their nominations for the 55th annual Grammy nominations. In the category of “best score soundtrack for visual media,” The Artist and Hugo got their well-deserved yet predictable nods. And then there’s the nomination for something completely unexpected: the soundtrack to the videogame, Journey.

According to Blastr, “Other than a song featured in Civilization 4 that originated on a different album, no song specifically made for a videogame has ever been up for a Grammy.” Videogames were made eligible for the Grammy awards back in April.

Composed by Austin Wintory, who has scored the soundtracks for all three games from producer thatgamecompany (flOw, Flower, and Journey), it’s unsurprising that Journey was the first videogame to be honored for a nomination. Journey is recognizably orchestral yet spare and distanced from the dramatic surges that frequent other videogame soundtracks. Wintory also made it free from cultural clichés.

According to Wikipedia, Wintory has created three hundred scores since 2003.

1D land at Heathrow Airport, cause frenzy

When you're part of the biggest boyband in the world, you're going to attract some crazy fans.

But it was too much for Liam Payne on Saturday afternoon when he and One Direction were mobbed by young girls at Heathrow airport.

Through the raucous that came with trying to navigate their way through the female frenzy, Liam received a Chinese burn, after which he went on a Twitter rampage to share his frustration.

'I don't know why people are blaming us for this it's so sad :( when everyone's rushing and make it unsafe we get thrown back in our cars,' the boybander began.

According to photographers, the band's security team struggled to cope with the collective power of the 1Directioners who filled every possible space in the covered car park.

The sheer impact and volatile nature of the crowd really set his emotions off, as Liam continued to describe the experience: 'That was actually horrible I literally wanted to cry and all those people shouting s*** at us and we even tried to stop so s***.'

Biggie's Autopsy Details Released More than 15 Years After His Death

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office released the autopsy report on Christopher Wallace, aka The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls, on Friday, more than 15 years after the rapper was shot to death.

The 23-page report offers fresh details about his death, which remains one of the city's best-known unsolved homicides.

Wallace, 24, was shot and killed early on March 9, 1997, as he was leaving a music industry party. He was riding in the front passenger seat of a Chevrolet Suburban when another vehicle pulled up beside his and someone opened fire.

Wallace was shot four times, according to the autopsy report.

The fatal bullet entered his right hip and ripped through several organs, including his liver, heart and lung. The other bullets struck Wallace in his left forearm, his back and his left thigh.

He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he arrived in full cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m.

At the time of his death, he had no drugs or alcohol in his system. Wallace was 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighed 395 pounds and had a tattoo on his right forearm that read: "The Lord is My Light and my Salvation ..."

His slaying has long stumped investigators.

Los Angeles police and the FBI both looked into the case but made no arrests.

Wallace was killed just six months after his former friend and rap rival Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas, leading some to believe both shootings were tied to a so-called rap war between East Coast and West Coast hip-hop artists and their record companies.

Shakur recorded for Marion "Suge" Knight's Los Angeles-based Death Row Records, while Wallace was signed with New York-based Bad Boy Entertainment.

Shakur's killing is also unsolved.

Cuba Moves to Ban all Public Displays of Reggaeton Music

Cuba is going to ban reggaeton. The Cuban Music Institute is leading a backlash against the music genre that they deem both “vulgar” and “mediocre”.

The Cuban Ministry of Culture has formally announced this week that it plans to ban the “vulgar, banal and mediocre” genre of reggaeton music in Cuba, and to place sanctions on individuals and organizations that promote or facilitate it.

Those who oppose reggaeton and similar musical genres in Cuba have not spoken lightly of their distate for it on cultural level. Graziella Pogolotti, Vice President of the National Union of Artists and Writers of Cuba (UNEAC) – the cultural organization deemed the professional union of Cuban intellectuals in post-Revolution Cuba – has previously said that reggaeton is “vulgar”, “sexist” and promoted a “lack of values” in the glorification of capitalism and personal wealth, which they argue stands in stark contrast to Cuba’s socio-political history of socialism. The UNEAC has also previously put forward suggestions to Cuban authorities on how to limit reggaeton’s promotion and distribution to the wider public.
Such measures now seem to be nearing completion across Cuba this week. Plans to prohibit reggaeton will extend to limiting the broadcasting of reggaeton music in public spaces such as eateries, bars, state functions, offices and public transport, as well as use in radio and television programs via state media outlets. These sanctions will also extend to the individuals who either perform or promote reggaeton. Musicians could potentially lose their license to perform live music if they perform reggaeton in public places and risk being struck off official records, posing a threat to their future employment possibilities.
The driving force behind this national prohibition appears to be justified by authorities on two levels. The first, that reggaeton is a direct threat to Cuban women in its hyper-sexualisation of women, which leads to an ingrained objectification and demeaning representation of women in society overall through “aggressive, sexually obscene lyrics that deform the innate sensuality of the Cuban woman” which “projects them as grotesque sexual objects.” Secondly, that this is “backed by the poorest quality music” which stands in contrast to ‘authentic’ Cuban musical culture, with its history of salsa, rumba, jazz and the multitude of African and Caribbean influences that have come to permeate traditional Cuban instrumentation.

Lady Gaga expresses thanks to Russian PM for support of gay rights

Lady Gaga arrived in, St. Petersburg, Russia, on Dec. 7 and just hours prior to touch down, expressed her gratitude to Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev for opposing laws that forbid minors from receiving information about homosexuality.

The Mother Monster took to Twitter and posted: “Thank You Prime Minister Medvedev for not standing by your party's anti gay propaganda law & instead supporting my show+fans all over Russia.” In a second post to Russia’s PM, Lady Gaga posted: “Prime Minister Medvedev please accept my gratitude I am looking forward to performing in RUSSIA & celebrating our cultures coming together.”

Nine regions, including St. Petersburg, have recently passed bills imposing fines of up to $150,000 for providing minors with information on homosexuality, as this information is deemed by law to be “homosexual propaganda.” In a Dec. 7 interview, PM Medvedev said, “Not all relations between people can be regulated by law,” speaking to the anti-gay laws that are currently in place. On Dec. 19 The Duma, which is Russia's parliament, will consider the nationwide ban of these educational materials.

The 26-year-old mega-star has been a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ communities and has never shied away from giving her support. Of course in typical Mother Monster style, upon landing in St. Petersburg she tweeted: “Just arrived in St. Petersburg Russia I'm so delighted to see so many monsters at the airport. Take me to the ballet!”

FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Gets A 2015 Release Date!

With The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future already on track, 20th Century Fox's next big-screen adaptation based on a Marvel Comics property is the Fantastic Four reboot. And according to Exhibitor Relations, the reboot has been given a release date, which slates the all-new take on Marvel's First Family for a premiere in the same year asStar Wars Episode VII, maybe Justice League, and of course the other anticipated Marvel superhero ensemble flick, The Avengers sequel.

The new Fantastic Four film will hit theaters on March, 6, 2015! In addition to the release date, Fox also announced that The WolverineX-Men: Days of Future PastDawn of the Planet of the Apes and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters will all be 3D releases. No surprise there. Anyhow, directed by Chronicle helmer Josh Trank, who officially signed on back in July, the reboot is being penned by Jeremy Slater, who promises a take on the superhero team that “fans deserve.”

The first two original films, Fantastic Four (2005) and Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), were directed by Tim Story and starred Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards, Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, Chris Evans (now Captain America) as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm/Thing. About the reboot, there were several casting rumors years ago when development of a new film was announced. But with a release date now confirmed, who do you think could play the team?

Ian McKellen joins Doctor Who

There's an extra treat in store for this year's Doctor Who Christmas special, as Sir Ian McKellen is lending his voice to The Snowmen...

The countdown to the Doctor Who Christmas special is well and truly on, with the BBC confirming that the eagerly-awaited The Snowmen is set to be transmitted at 5.15pm on Christmas Day. Matt Smith is starring of course, with Steven Moffat having penned the script.

As well as the new episode introducing, properly, Jenna-Louise Coleman as the new assistant, we've just discovered another piece of interesting news about The Snowmen. And that's that the role of Voice Of The Snowman has gone to Sir Ian McKellen.

We shall thus hear Gandalf himself in Doctor Who, but not see him. McKellen joins Richard E Grant on guest star duties.

This isn't rumour: it's been 100% confirmed to us, and is one further reason to get excited about this Yuletide's Doctor Who adventure.

Disney TV Movies that Need Sequels

After Monday's exciting news that Life-Size, Tyra Banks' greatest contribution to television, is getting a sequel, a world of opportunity opened. The 2000 straight-to-TV movie became an instant guilty pleasure, but it was just one of Disney's many original movies to premiere on ABC or Disney Channel. There are plenty of others that deserve sequels of their own, but we're focusing on the best of the pre-High School Musical era -- because let's be honest, nothing was ever the same after that. Before that franchise, Disney Channel movies were adorably cheesy with cute, if completely unbelievable, storylines. Since the ill-fated day that Zac Efron had to choose between drama club and the basketball team, the movies lost all of their charms and became mere vehicles for the network's latest stars (all of whom were required to sing, apparently). Here are some of the classics (we use the word lightly in all respects) that haven't gotten sequels yet, and are long overdue:

Calgary-born author wins Bad Sex award

Award-winning Calgary-born novelist Nancy Huston won Britain’s Bad Sex in Fiction award for her novel Infrared, whose tale of a photographer who takes pictures of her lovers during sex proved too revealing for the judges.

The choice was announced by Downton Abbey actress Samantha Bond during a ceremony at the Naval & Military Club in London.

Judges of the tongue-in-cheek prize — which is run by the Literary Review magazine — said they were struck by a description of “flesh, that archaic kingdom that brings forth tears and terrors, nightmares, babies and bedazzlements,” and by a long passage that builds to a climax of “undulating space.”

Huston, who lives in Paris, was not on hand to collect her prize. In a statement read by her publicist, the 59-year-old author said she hoped her victory would “incite thousands of British women to take close-up photos of their lovers’ bodies in all states of array and disarray.”

Huston, who writes in both French and English, is the author of more than a dozen novels, including Plainsong and Fault Lines. She has previously won France’s Prix Goncourt prize and was a finalist for Britain’s Orange Prize for fiction by women.

She is only the third woman to win the annual Bad Sex prize, founded in 1993 to name and shame authors of “crude, tasteless and … redundant passages of sexual description in contemporary novels.”

Some critics, however, have praised the sexual passages in Infrared. Shirley Whiteside in the Independent on Sunday newspaper said there were “none of the lazy cliches of pornography or the purple prose of modern romantic fiction” — though she conceded the book’s sex scenes were “more perfunctory than erotic.”

Huston beat finalists including previous winner Tom Wolfe — for his passage in Back to Blood describing “his big generative jockey” — and Booker Prize-nominated Nicola Barker, whose novel The Yips compares a woman to “a plump Bakewell pudding.”
