Foxy Mulder

All right, we haven’t had a Rumor Mill update in a very long while, so now that we’re up and running on the newly-redesigned Bits, it feels like it’s time to get the Mill going again, yes? And with a nice Cold War-era, espionage-inspired logo to boot!

So here’s today’s dispatch: A number of our industry sources are now telling us that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is planning (and in fact may already be gearing up to) release their classic TV series The X-Files on Blu-ray. As fans will already be aware, the first four seasons of the show were produced in 4x3 format, like many TV programs of its era. The series then went to a 16x9 widescreen format for the remainder of its run, as anamorphic widescreen displays were starting to become common. The entire show was still broadcast in standard definition – not actual high-definition – and the visual effects and post-production were finished in SD. (Note that the first actual HD broadcast on Fox was for the 2004 NFL season, while X-Files ended its run in 2002.) Our sources say Fox has likely decided to “rebuild” the seasons in high-definition, in much the same way that CBS has done with Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Provided all the original camera negative has been properly stored and archived, it’ll presumably be an easier task as the show featured fewer and less elaborate visual effects.

This wouldn’t be the first time Fox has upgraded a show to Blu-ray: They did something roughly similar with Firefly on Blu-ray back in 2008, although to be fair all of the show’s visual effects were upconverted to HD rather than re-rendered in actual high-definition to save costs.

If all goes well, we’re told the first seasons of The X-Files could appear on BD sometime in late 2013. We’ll post additional updates as they come in. Stay tuned…

10 great Leonard Cohen cover songs

For the second time in four years, Leonard Cohen brings his bolo tie and baritone to Calgary, this time at the Saddledome. It won’t be as intimate as his 2009 show at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, but 2009 reviews from friends in Edmonton said he made Rexall Place feel like Cohen’s neighbourhood coffeehouse.

Hyperbole tends to flow from people not used to spouting hyperbole after they sit through the 78-year-old’s charming, three-hour trips through his catalog.

Almost as good, and sometimes better, are the many sublime covers from the many, many artists who take on the poet’s unparalleled lyrics. With some great difficulty and some lousy brandy, I divined a list of 10 must-hear Cohen covers.

Melissa Joan Hart HATES Being Pregnant.

Collapse )

And with Hart currently in the process of writing her own memoir, her son’s sketching skills could one day be quite useful to the author. “He may very well end up doing the illustrations for my book,” she jokes.

The actress recently welcomed her third son Tucker McFadden – Hart and her husband Mark Wilkerson are also parents to Braydon Hart, 4, pictured above — and would love nothing more than to expand her family further … if it weren’t for the pesky pregnancy process.

“I would have seven babies if I didn’t have to be pregnant. I hate being pregnant — the lack of energy at the beginning [and] having to change your diet,” she says. “It’s a huge adjustment and you have to change your whole lifestyle for a few months.”

But with such a bright light at the end of the tunnel — her baby boy! — Hart knows the best days are yet to come.

“What gets me through the rough months [is that] I remember that it is going to get better as his personality changes,” she explains. “Soon he is going to be crawling and walking.”

Mason and Brady also have been making the transition easier on Mom by offering a helping hand — and a turn at diaper duty! — when needed.

“The older boys help with diaper changes. I am like, ‘Can you grab Mommy that?’ and after weeks [of that] they are like, ‘Gosh, you can never do anything for yourself,’” Hart says with a laugh.

CHARLIE SHEEN Paid Lindsay Lohan $100K to Cover Tax Debt

Don't ever say Charlie Sheen's not the charitable type -- because he recently cut Lindsay Lohan a $100,000 check to cover the actress' six-figure tax bill ... all out of the goodness of his heart ... sources tell TMZ.

Sources close to Lindsay tell us she and Charlie became close pals while on the set of "Scary Movie 5" back in September -- spending a lot of time together both on and off the set.

During their bonding period, we're told Lindsay and Charlie talked about everything -- and at one point, Lindsay mentioned her ongoing tax problems.

We're told Charlie offered to cut her a check then and there to get the IRS off her tail, but Lindsay refused.

Fast forward to last week -- sources close to Lindsay tell TMZ, Lindsay's biz manager received a check from Charlie for $100,000.

We're told Lindsay was blown away by Charlie's generosity -- and immediately applied the money to her outstanding tax bill.

TMZ broke the story ... Lindsay allegedly owed Uncle Sam $233,904 in unpaid taxes for 2009 and 2010 -- but thanks to Charlie, that number's nearly been cut in half.

As we reported, Lindsay's slated to earn over $2 MILLION by the end of this year -- but who knows where that's going.

Bradley Cooper caught ogling at Jennifer Lawrence’s boobs

The evidence:

London: Bradley Cooper was photographed sneaking a peek at his co-star Jennifer Lawrence’s cleavage at the screening of their new film ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ at Beverley Hills. The 37-year-old actor’s eyes wandered down Lawrence’s black low-cut frock as the pair posed for the shutterbugs on the red carpet.

Cooper and the Hunger Games star Lawrence, who are playing an “are they/aren’t they” couple in the rom-com – exuded plenty of real-life chemistry as they cuddled in front of cameras at the Beverly Hills bash.

Review: The Sims 3 Seasons brings good cheer

Since its release in 2009, The Sims 3 has seen a number of expansions and add-ons to enhance its core gameplay. Over its course, we've seen pets, new traits, items, clothing, careers, and even supernatural creatures all added to the game. In short, the game basically has it all. But until recently, The Sims 3 has lacked one vital feature: seasons.

The Sims 3, which prides itself on being the most in-depth simulator on the market, has missed out on the one key element of every day life: weather. Is it only me, or does it seem a bit strange that the game has received zombies and fairies before snow and rain?

X Factor's Rylan Clark: 'Gary Barlow banter has become hateful'

X Factor contestant Rylan Clark has claimed that Gary Barlow's "banter" has gone too far.

Clark, who regularly clashes with the judge on the show, told The Sun that while he is happy to exchange "panto" insults, he believes Barlow's comments have become "hateful" after he slammed the singer at a recent gig.

The Take That star told fans at his Mencap charity concert on Tuesday night that he thinks Clark is "absolute s**te" and encouraged them to chant "Get him out".

"We've got this banter in the studio and in the studio that's where it stays," Clark said. "So when I found out what he did at the gig it upset me because I thought, 'You've taken this out of the show now'.

"I'm not saying the word 'bully', not in the slightest bit. I just look at it and think it's not nice to get a crowd to do something like that... ever.

"It's a bit hateful. I'm all up for the panto but these people in the crowd are hardcore Gary fans. If he turns round and says something, that's in their head and they're the ones who come on Twitter to give me abuse.

"I get a lot of 'I Love Gary Barlow' people tweeting me and that's expected, but I don't think that helped this week.

"Without going into too much detail, if he does it again and carries on I'll just have to tell everyone how it really is. I'll lay it on the line."

'Merlin' officially not returning for Series 6

The BBC has officially announced that the current series of Merlin will be the last.

The fantasy drama will bow out with “a spectacular conclusion” this Christmas, the BBC has confirmed in a statement released at midnight. The special two-part finale will see Merlin’s re-telling of the Arthurian legend reach “its natural and dramatic end.”
(lol bye arfur)

Co-creators and Executive Producers, Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy commented: “This is the series where the storylines truly reach their apex. We always felt the story of the legend was best told across five series, leading to a spectacular finale that draws on the best known elements of this much-loved story and brings to a conclusion the battle for Camelot. We’d like to thank the amazing cast and crew for their professionalism and dedication, the BBC, FME and all of our partners globally for their incredible support and encouragement across the last five series. But chiefly, our thanks go to Merlin’s remarkable and loyal audience around the world for their enthusiasm for the characters and Camelot universe.”

BBC One Controller Danny Cohen added: “Merlin’s mix of magic, adventure and humour quickly became a hit with BBC One audiences and has continued to thrill families over the last five years on Saturday nights. I admire the creators’ decision to end Merlin on a high, but also know that we will miss it in the BBC One schedule. On behalf of BBC One I would like to thank Shine and all those involved in the making of the show both on and off screen. I hope fans will tune in over the coming weeks to see the spectacularly dramatic final episodes, and we have ambitious plans for new drama in the Saturday evening slot in 2013.”

Sidney Crosby teased for attending Justin Bieber concert in Pittsburgh

Halifax, N.S., native and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has a lot of time on his hands, as long as the NHL lockout continues. So, on Tuesday night, the hockey player filled some of that time by checking out fellow Canadian Justin Bieber's concert at Pittsburgh's Consol Energy Center -- inciting some criticism from sports bloggers in the process.

Sidney's presence at the 18-year-old pop prince's show was just a rumour on Twitter until this photo emerged on the Tumblr "Crosby Eh." The photo depicts "Sid the Kid" posing with three young female Bieber fans decked out in Bieber gear, including a trucker hat with the now infamous adjective "SWAGGY."
Enter the hockey journalists and bloggers who had a problem with Sidney's presence at the concert.

"Over the past handful of years, Justin Bieber has come swooping in to steal the crown from Nickelback as 'export we're most embarrassed of.' ... While you're welcome to like whatever music you like, possibly the World's Greatest Hockey Player, a representative of the NHL, should not be allowed to attend Bieber concerts. I mean, for the good of the game and our collective pride, at least," wrote Canadian blogger Justin Bourne on, in a post titled "Let's all have a laugh at Sidney Crosby attending a Justin Bieber concert."

"Maybe he likes it? Maybe he chaperoned his 16-year-old sister? Maybe Mario Lemieux finally kicked him out of the house and now Crosby just sleeps in the Pens' dressing room?" wrote Deadspin's Barry Petchesky.

And Jeff Greenwell from Business Insider didn't limit his zingers to just Crosby.
"While the musical stylings of an obvious lesbian teen pop sensation aren't for everyone, and the incessant screaming and hysterics of thousands upon thousands of prepubescent girls would be mind numbingly annoying, who are we to judge someone's musical preferences?" Greenwall wrote. "Now, had Crosby been seen at a Nickelback concert, that would be worth a lifetime of ridicule and shaming."

Without NHL games to cover, journalists have been paying more attention to the personal lives of the players for stories. This fact, combined with Crosby's reputation as one of the league's "softest" players and Bieber's insane popularity among teenage girls made for a perfect storm of ridicule.

But, as it turns out, the real joke might be on them. His attendance at the concert was confirmed by Seth Rorabaugh, a hockey journalist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who had an honourable reason for being at the concert.

Crosby probably had a fine time at the show, and maybe he even sung along to "Baby" or "Beauty And A Beat." But as Deadspin pointed out, the Penguins would have played a game in Detroit on Monday and at home on Wednesday if it weren't for the lockout -- and that's probably what the 25-year-old hockey star would have preferred to do, too.

'Liz & Dick' Viewing Post

Lifetime presents one of the most hilarious and terrible — hilarrible, if you will — TV movies of our time. Future generations will turn to us and say, “Grandma, where were YOU when Lindsay Lohan laid waste to Elizabeth Taylor’s memory?” And you may be able to look at little Kumquat or Xerxes and say, “Honey, I was passed out on the sofa.” Because reviews suggested that Liz & Dick would make a good drinking game, and who are we to ignore a gauntlet like that?

NFL Cheerleaders Shave Their Heads on National TV to Support Leukemia Research

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

See Video Here

Who says bald isn't beautiful? Don't tell that to Megan M. and Crystal B., two Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders who agreed to have their heads shaved to benefit leukemia research during the Colts' 20-13 Sunday win over the Buffalo Bills at Indy's Lucas Oil Field. Of course, the fight to cure leukemia has been a major focus of this franchise since head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with the disease in September.

Earlier this month, over two dozen Colts players shaved their heads in a show of support for Pagano, who is undergoing chemotherapy to battle a condition that is in remission, according to recent reports.

The cheerleaders got in the game when Blue, the team's overstuffed blue horse of a mascot, issued a challenge -- if one Colts cheerleader could raise $10,000 for leukemia research by November 25, she'd get her head shaved. That's only a good deal if you're a great person trying to help someone you care about, and that's clearly the case here -- Megan and Crystal raised over $22,000 on time, and sat down for the buzz cuts. Blue began the festivities before somebody more qualified took over.

"I've just had personal experiences with people who have had cancer," Megan told 24-hour News 8's Daniel Miller. "I've had mentors and family members and volunteer at Riley and met little girls who have lost their hair and beat cancer multiple times. Just seeing struggles they went through and how they could overcome that and still have confidence and fight this fight without their hair - they are really my inspiration for doing this."

Megan and Crystal aren't alone. Local salons are donating $10 to "Blue's ChuckStrong Challenge" for every person who agrees to have their heads shaved. 800 fans have had their heads shaved so far, and more than $250,000 has been raised for leukemia research by Colts representatives since the "ChuckStrong" campaign began.

If you would like to know more about the campaign, visit the "ChuckStrong" section of the Colts' official website.

The Colts' organization is filled with high-quality people, but what makes this the feel-good story of the year is that one season after finishing with the a 2-14 record and blowing up the organization in the offseason, this team has a 7-4 record and is in the thick of the AFC playoff race with interim head coach Bruce Arians.

[ Black Issue ] Model to Mogul and Beyond: Tyra Banks

Born beautiful, Tyra Banks hit the genetic lottery and was embraced by the fashion industry. As a teenager, the ‘it’ girl appeared on every important cover in fashion history. Her remarkable career hit a fever pitch in her twenties, as Tyra racked up several ‘firsts’ including: the first African-American woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s illustrious swimsuit issue twice. She was the first woman to appear on the cover of GQ magazine and as an ‘Angel’, Tyra was the first African-American to appear on Victoria’s Secret cover. Due to her wildly successful talk show, The Tyra Banks Show, she garnered two Emmy Awards and by 2008, she was deemed by Time Magazine as, One of The Most Influential People in The World.

The road to success was not easy for the girl who was once known for her overflowing cup size. At times the media was very judgmental towards Banks, yet she turned the unpleasantries into a mission. “Kiss my fat ass…” was the phrase that echoed throughout the universe. And with that one statement, the girl with the ‘Smize’ became a modern day feminist.

She is the creative force behind and star of America’s Next Top Model, which is playing in over 170 countries to date. Now entering it’s tenth year, ANTM Cycle 20 will include men. The juggernaut she calls Top Model has 22 international franchises and growing, with Asia’s Next Top Model scheduled to be released this month.

Tyra Banks has become an entertainment, education and philanthropic leader. With a New York Times Best Selling fictional book called Modelland, author can be added to her list of many talents. And with her new ABC television show called Five Head, Tyra Banks has positioned herself to be The Queen of Multi-Media. The newly Harvard Graduate is a walking think tank that has dedicated her life to entertaining the world in a wholesome manner. Through her new foundation called, THE TYRA BANKS TZONE AT THE LOWER EASTSIDE GIRLS CLUB, Banks now has a place that she can teach young people through her leadership programming about raising the self-esteem of girls and women. Now a bonafied businesswoman, Banks has transformed her life from Model to Mogul and Beyond.

Stephenie Meyer likes the same books as you. Horrid thought.

What's on Stephenie Meyer's ideal bookshelf? The works that made the artists.

Stephenie Meyer

I was the reader. That was my identity in my family: I was that girl who was always in a corner reading; I read my whole life away. I skipped children's books. My dad would read to us at night, and I first began to read on my own by reading ahead in those books. I was seven when I read Little Women for the first time, and it became nearly as real to me as the rest of my life.

I always identified with Jo; I was the tomboy. My big sister was Meg, the pretty one, the sweet one. We didn't have a Beth, but my younger sister was definitely Amy, the frivolous one who liked nice things. I was like Jo in every way except for her passion for writing; I was perfectly content just to read. It wasn't until much later, after I had published three books, that I went back to Little Women and realised that I had become even more like Jo. Now I was a writer, too.

Of all the heroines I was invested in throughout my childhood, Jane Eyre was the one I most identified with, despite my having a happy and supportive family. I liked heroines who weren't perfectly beautiful. I liked that everyone wasn't swept away and captivated by her. Jane Eyre has this huge stubborn streak, which I have, too. I have my ideals, and I really don't diverge from them – it's probably off-putting to a lot of people. Jane is like that, too; she sticks to things even when she's uncomfortable and unhappy and making other people feel the same way. Of course, she's pushed to deeper extremes than I've ever been forced to go to, but I always felt we would see eye to eye. When I think about the books that were formative to me as a writer, I can see how much I was influenced by Anne of Green Gables. When the series starts, Anne is a young girl, and we follow her as she becomes a teenager, an adult, a mother, and finally almost a grandmother. It's so rare that we get to grow up with a character. When I was first imagining my novels, I skipped from Twilight to Breaking Dawn because I was eager to see Bella as an adult.

My editor encouraged me to slow down and show more of her in high school. I don't enjoy a character as much when he or she stays the same age. I want to see what comes next. These books contain threads of what I like to write about: the way people interact, how we relate to one another when life is both beautiful and horrible. But these books are greater than anything I could ever aspire to create. I'll never love what I've done as much as I love what these authors have done. However, for me, just getting to create is its own reward.

How ‘Red Dawn’ Could Have Been Remade Without the Xenophobia

During the Thanksgiving season, we offer our gratitude to Providence for the things that make life bearable and occasionally awesome. Me, I gave thanks for my wonderful family. For the grace of a home, a job, reasonable good health and moderate financial security. For having gotten through Horrorcane Sandy mostly untouched, and learning in the process some valuable lessons about the underappreciated modern wonder that is electricity.

I’m also thankful for not having to singlehandedly defend the Northwestern United States from marauding communists! That would totally suck. Especially if I were an untrained high school kid with raging hormones and Walmart-grade munitions, as is the conceit in the movie “Red Dawn,” which opened this week in theaters across not-yet-occupied America.

For those of you who lived through the Eighties, the movie is a pumped-up remake of the kitsch-classic 1984 original of the same name, written and directed by Hollywood red-meat specialist John Milius. (Besides “Red Dawn,” Milius is notable for having co-written “Apocalypse Now” and penning many of Clint Eastwood’s most famous Dirty Harry lines, including the immortal “Go ahead, make my day.”)

These Has-Been Celebrities Still Charge Staggering Fees Per Appearance

Even celebrities who are past their prime charge a ton of money. Speaking engagements, private performances or simple appearances can bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Celebrity Talent International is an agency that represents huge stars like Adele, Elton John and Angelina Jolie, booking appearances for these stars and hundreds more. Many of the appearance fees are listed on CTI's website and are shockingly high. Celebrities don't necessarily receive the full amount, but the fees are guidelines for what they expect.

Decades after 90210 made her famous, Shannen Doherty is still asking for a ton of money. Same for former musician/reality stars like Clay Aiken and Bret Michaels. And you won't believe what the former Mr. Britney Spears charges.

1. Shannen Doherty charges more than $100,000 per appearance.
Doherty's peak was about 20 years ago when she starred as mean girl Brenda on "Beverly Hills 90210." She's had a few gigs since, but nothing notable in the past couple years.

somewhat optimistic royalty post: Dutch prince Friso showing signs of improvement

Dutch Prince Friso, brain-damaged and in a coma after being caught in an avalanche eight months ago, is showing some signs of improvement, the palace says.

"Recently, Prince Friso has been showing small signs of consciousness. This condition is referred to as 'minimal consciousness," the palace said in a statement yesterday.

"The prognosis however remains very uncertain and the medical team is still very worried. It will still take many months before there is any clarity on his condition."

Prince Friso, 44, was transferred to London's Wellington Hospital in March from Austria after being buried by an avalanche on February 17. Doctors at the time said he might never regain consciousness.

The father of two, and the second of the three sons of Queen Beatrix, was skiing off piste in the Lech resort with a friend when the avalanche struck.

At the time the avalanche alert level was at the second highest, meaning there was a particular risk away from the prepared ski slopes.

The Dutch royal family had been vacationing in Lech, where it regularly spends its skiing holiday, when the accident happened, and members of the family made daily visits to the prince's bedside in Innsbruck before his transfer.

Linda McMahon hands out condoms with bad checks! remains classy while doing so!

It seems as though spending $100 million on two failed campaigns for Senate has left pro-wrestling magnate/ "self-funding Republican" Linda McMahon light on cash. Either that, or her campaign is cheap and vindictive (or inept).

Recently, several of McMahon's part time campaign workers complained to a local news station about not being paid after the election. McMahon's campaign then sent checks to those workers, but the checks bounced. Cruel and vengeful prank, actions of a bankrupt campaign or just an administrative mistake?
