Rafael Nadal forced to withdraw from London Olympics

Reigning Olympic champion Rafael Nadal has been forced to withdraw from the London 2012 Olympics due to ongoing knee problems.

Nadal, gold medallist four years ago in Beijing admitted he was "not in the right physical condition to compete" and that he had to "think about Spanish sport."

The world number three, who was due to carry Spain's flag at the opening ceremony, had already taken two weeks off in the buildup to the Olympics to recover from tendinitis in his knee
"I've waited until the final moment of my preparation and my training, but I cannot do it," Nadal said in a statement released to the Spanish press on Thursday.

"Today is one of the saddest days in my career. Carrying the flag for Spain at the opening ceremony was set to be one of the biggest honors, one of the most special moments for me. For this reason I hope you can understand how difficult it has been for me to take this decision. One of my teammates who is better prepared than me can take my place and compete to the best of his ability."

The Spanish Tennis Federation announced that world number 30 Feliciano Lopez would take Nadal's spot in the singles competition. Marc Lopez, who has won doubles titles with Nadal on the ATP tour, will take his place in the doubles competition.

The Spanish Olympic Federation have chosen basketball star Pau Gasol as the new flag bearer.

Cassandra Claire talks controversy surrounding GODfrey Gao as Magnus Bane

vanillanightt asked you:

It’s not really a question, but an observation. I understand the reasons, but on Facebook after the recent post about TMI casting information a lot of fans are confused as to why they would want an Asian actor for Magnus Bane. Think you could clear it up, once again, to clear the confusion?”

Okay, although I admit I am confused about the confusion. They want an Asian actor to play Magnus because Magnus is Asian. (Technically, Magnus is biracial. I would be perfectly happy with a biracial actor playing him — but otherwise the option is an Asian actor, not a white actor. It doesn’t matter if any of Magnus’ background is white. Casting him white would erase that part of his background that is Asian. And important. There are plenty of roles out there for white actors. Most roles are for white actors. This is not one of them. There is very little I have control over as regards casting. I cannot pick an actor for Magnus. I don’t have that ability. But I can say, and say strongly, that I want them to cast an Asian or half-Asian actor, and I did. It is pretty much the one ironclad demand as regards casting that I have made, i.e. : if you don’t cast an Asian actor, I’ll never talk about this movie again, nor will I see it.)

Let’s take a quick look at some example descriptions of Magnus from the books:

Amy Winehouse's Death, One Year Later: Her Impact And What's Still To Come

Monday will mark the one-year anniversary of Amy Winehouse's death. The coroner determined her untimely passing was caused by an accidental alcohol overdose and ruled her passing a "death by misadventure." Winehouse had more than five times the legal driving limit of alcohol (416 mg per deciliter of blood) in her body at the time of her death — enough to stop her respiratory system from functioning properly. The inquest found no illegal drugs in her system.

Winehouse's influence came sharply into focus in the months following her death. Some of the biggest artists in music expressed their sadness and disbelief at her passing and honored the impact her talent had on their industry. "Amy changed pop music forever. I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her," Lady Gaga tweeted. "She lived jazz, she lived the blues."

Nolan Wants A Selina/Catwoman Spin-off

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
I saw The Dark Knight Rises last night, and despite some pretty troublesome flaws in it, a lot of really great things stood out-- and maybe none greater than Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman. As a sassy, slinky but oddly realistic cat burglar, Hathaway's Kyle is an odd but instantly endearing antagonist for Bruce Wayne--though as you might remember from the comics or the earlier movies, their relationship is a little more complex than that. The Dark Knight Rises can't focus entirely on her, of course-- there's Bane out there to deal with-- but you constantly find yourself wanting to see more of her, and according to Christopher Nolan, that's kind of the point.

"“She’s an incredible character and we’re very excited to see her and hopefully we’ll leave people wanting more," Nolan told Access Hollywood, adding that Hathaway is "incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character." And while he reiterated, as he has over and over again for months, that he's done telling stories in Gotham City, he suggested that Hathaway's spin on Catwoman might be able to find another story under someone else's hand: "I certainly think she deserves it, she's incredible."

What I'd really like to see is Nolan making more movies set in Gotham, a fictional city he's brought to incredible life over the three Batman movies-- the movies wouldn't be about Batman, but about other people living there, and maybe even Selina Kyle. Yes, I know the logistics of character rights and franchises make this impossible, but let me dream! At the very least, while Warner Bros. figures out how to reboot Batman in a post-Nolan world, it would be fun to see Nolan and Hathaway team up for a Catwoman movie, maybe something small and dirty that just lets her kick dudes with her stilettos and quip about their pain before jumping out a window. Tell me you wouldn't want to see that!

PSU Takes Down Statue of Joe Paterno

The statue of Joe Paterno, Penn State's late, disgraced former football coach, has been taken down, after university officials announced early Sunday their decision to remove it.

"I now believe that, contrary to its original intention, coach Paterno's statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing in our university and beyond," Penn State president Rodney Erickson said in a statement. "I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse."

The decision comes on the heels of a damning 267-page report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh--which concluded Paterno concealed information about former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse of underage boys--and a day before the NCAA announces sanctions against the school and its football program.

I agree with PSU's decision to take it down. I do not, however, agree with how the NCAA is going to punch the school; cutting funding to the Athletic Department aka the funding for 32 different teams. That, to me, is punishing the wrong people.

Japanese World Champions Fly Coach to Olympics While Men Get Business Class

In Japan, winning a world title earns you a seat at the back of the bus, er, plane.

The Japanese women’s soccer team flew to Europe Sunday on the same flight as the men’s team. While the women crammed into coach seats, the men’s team scored seats in business class. As it stands, this would be an injustice, but here’s the kicker: The women are world champions; the men are, well, not as successful.

The Nadeshiko, as the women’s team is known, won the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup last summer, beating out the U.S. team in a spectacular final. Just months after the country’s devastating earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis, the team’s victory brought hope to its battered compatriots, and the women were welcomed back from the final as heroes.

"TDKR" Grossed $160(+) Million & Anne Hathaway Addresses The Tragedy In Aurora

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
"The Dark Knight Rises" was on track to earn $160 million, which would be a record for 2-D films, over the weekend following a mass shooting at a Colorado screening of the Batman film.

Citing box office insiders, The Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, New York Times and other media outlets reported Sunday that the latest Batman sequel earned $160 to $162 million.

That amount would best the $158.4 million debut of "The Dark Knight" in 2008 and give "Dark Knight Rises" the third-highest domestic weekend opening ever after the 3-D films "The Avengers" with $207.4 million and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2" with $169.2 million.

The brief statement from Hathaway, who plays Catwoman in the film, reads in full:

"My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act. I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

Bristol Palin Son Tripp Calls His Aunt Willow a “F**got”

"I'm doing a terrible job disciplining Tripp," Bristol Palin admits on her Lifetime reality show Life's a Tripp. And yes, giggling when your toddler calls his aunt a "faggot" is probably not a great way to let him know that's not a nice word.

Look, kids say the darndest things, and it's kind of funny when a child curses. But there's a difference between a precocious utterance of "fuck" and a homophobic slur. The complete lack of shame is especially embarrassing given that there were cameras filming it all — gay-friendly Lifetime cameras, no less.

Hmm, I wonder where Tripp learned to use "faggot" as an insult.

Westboro Baptist Church Threatens To 'Super Picket' Aurora Prayer Vigil For Batman Shooting Victims

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church appear to be on their way to protest a prayer vigil for victims of the Aurora massacre, according to tweets from members posted by Examiner.com.

Using the hashtag #ThankGodForTheShooter, Examiner.com reports members tweeted out their plans to "super picket" the candle lit prayer service, saying "God is at work in Colorado."

Almost immediately, members of the community launched a campaign on Reddit and Facebook to form a "wall of love" around the memorial service to block the group from getting close. Church member Fred Phelps Jr. said these efforts would be in vain:

@WBCFredJr: WBC in Colorado to conquer yet another "wall", just like yesterday in Columbia. #andthewallcametumblingdown!

Earlier this morning, the Denver Comic Con released a statement on their Facebook page urging patrons of the convention to assist in forming a human barrier in front of the service.

“If you volunteered for Denver Comic Con 2012, or any other Con, and are planning to attend tonight's vigil, please consider wearing your volunteer t-shirt. I'm asking my DCC volunteers to be prepared to help form the barrier, should Westsboro show up."

OP note: I couldn't get a screenshot of Phelp's tweets but there are some examples at the source.

'Sleepy Hollow' TV Show: In The Works On The CW And Fox

Fox has given a pilot commitment to an adaptation of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" from "Fringe" creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The pilot is a modern-day supernatural thriller based on the 1820 short story following Ichabod Crane's efforts to bring peace to a troubled community called Sleepy Hollow.

Another "Sleepy Hollow" project is circulating in Hollywood as well. "Missing" writers Grant Scharbo and Patrick Macmanus are in talks with The CW to bring their take on "Sleepy Hollow" to TV, Deadline exclusively revealed. Scharbo and Mcmanus' version offers a modern take on the classic horror tale by making Cranean FBI agent who travels to the titular town to check out a beheading.

Similar to this "Sleepy Hollow" situation was last development season when ABC and The CW had "Beauty and the Beast" dramas -- both went to pilot but only The CW's made it to series. The CW's "Beauty and the Beast," which stars "Smallville" alum Kristin Kreuk, is loosely based on the '80s CBS series that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. It's a modern-day retelling of that love story with a procedural element.

"Beauty and the Beast" premieres on Thurs., Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. ET.

Boy obsessed with Britney Spears spends £60,000 to get sex change to look like his idol

A male pop fan who idolised Britney Spears has undergone a sex change operation to make himself look more like the star.

Transsexual Kara Hays has now spent over £60,000 on gender re-alignment surgery and breast implants. The 26-year-old, who was born a man and used to be known as Kody, now has long-flowing blonde hair in imitation of the 90s pop singer.

'When you feel like you’re a girl living in a boy’s body and you try to change you want that validation that you look like a girl. I viewed her as a very strong woman, everybody wanted to date her. 'I focused on Britney and Christina Aguilera for my inspiration: they were the stars that were around when I was younger, they are who you looked up to. 'Nowadays people have Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

The 26-year-old says her new appearance, which has turned her into a lookalike of the pop singer who shot to fame with her debut album '...Baby One More Time' in 1999, has finally brought her happiness following years of anguish.

In 2002, Kara then underwent a gruelling 14 hour gender reassignment surgery and breast implant surgery, and has so far spent around £60,000 dying her hair blonde and modelling herself on her idea of perfection. She began being mistaken as Britney and was even referred to as the mega star by members of the paparazzi, something she claims was 'incredibly validating'. Kara later moved to New York to attend the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts for a year, graduating last year before starting on a degree in public relations.

When we spoke to Jillian Rose Reed last week about her Awkward co-star Beau Mirchoff, most of the convo managed to be about his ridiculous abs. Go figure. So since a touchy-feely ab sesh just wasn’t in the cards for us, we instead asked him some q’s, like which of his co-stars is his dream girl, his secret habit of writing love notes to girls he likes, and the differences between Matty and Jake. Oh, and he dished the deets on his upcoming film as well!

James Holmes Had A Profile On Match.Com

James Holmes is boyfriend material -- that's the shocker a Match.com member says she got when she logged on Friday afternoon to see the site suggesting she hook up with the man accused of killing 12 people in the Colorado movie massacre.

Diana (who asked us not to use her last name) tells TMZ she was floored when she saw Holmes' profile among her matches -- less than a day after the shootings -- saying it was "pretty scary getting matched to a mass murderer."

Diana says the profile said James hadn't visited the site in the last 24 hours, so it clearly had been created before the shootings. The profile also has the same tagline from James' adultfinder.com profile -- "Will you visit me in prison?"

Diana says she informed Match.com of the profile and they said they'd take it down, which Diana says they did minutes later. She took a few screen shots before it was deleted.

Is ‘The Master’ Based on Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard?

Director Paul Thomas Anderson won’t say what inspired his new film. So a former member of the church’s Sea Org took a look at the screenplay and gives The Daily Beast his verdict.

With all of the recent news regarding the Church of Scientology, it seems it was only a matter of time before someone made a movie about it. When it was first reported that Paul Thomas Anderson, director of Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood, was filming a movie that took place during the 1950s and was about a curious figure who starts a faith-based organization that catches on in America, a lot of folks in Hollywood assumed this was about L. Ron Hubbard and the church he founded.

No one has officially stated that the movie is based on Hubbard or Scientology. But it has been reported that Anderson screened the movie for Tom Cruise, one of Scientology’s most fervent and devout followers. For a movie that is officially not about Scientology, having Cruise screen it, if he indeed did, sure would seem like a curious move.

People want to know: is the film about Scientology and Hubbard or not?

No one from Anderson’s camp will give a definitive answer. And as for Scientology, “No one in the church has seen the film, and we have no comment,” a spokesman told The Daily Beast recently.

I grew up in Scientology and worked at their international Sea Organization headquarters for 15 years. In 2005, I got out, in an escape that involved the local county authorities—I wrote about my experiences in my bestselling book, Blown For Good: Behind the Iron Curtain of Scientology.
