first look at ralph fiennes & felicity jones in "the invisible woman"

Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones play Charles Dickens and Nelly Ternan; cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Tom Hollander and Michelle Fairley

Ralph Fiennes’s film about the secret love affair between Charles Dickens and a woman more than half his age is finally shooting.

It was announced to great fanfare at the Cannes Film Festival a few years ago when Christine Langan, head of BBC Films, joined forces with producer Stewart Mackinnon to get Abi Morgan to adapt Claire Tomalin’s brilliant 1991 book The Invisible Woman.

That book told of Dickens’s relationship with actress Nelly Ternan which started when she was 18 and he was 45.

It was an extraordinary affair. Dickens was perhaps the best-known man in the country, and he was married to Catherine — who had borne him ten children — when his eye fell on the blonde-haired Nelly.

The young actress performed in a distinguished but impoverished troupe of actors led by her mother, Frances Ternan (being played by Fiennes’s good friend Kristin Scott Thomas).

Nelly was indeed the invisible woman, and Felicity Jones — one of our best young actresses — was chosen by Fiennes, who is directing and starring as the famous author.

saoirse ronan to star in "testament of youth"

The project is backed by BBC Films and will be mounted by "Harry Potter" producer David Heyman through his Heyday Films.

The 18-year-old actress will play the lead role in Testament of Youth, based on Brittain’s heartbreaking memoir of the same name.

It follows An Education, My Week With Marilyn and Brighton Rock in a roster of period dramas from BBC Films. The project is being co-produced by David Heyman, who adapted the Harry Potter books for the big screen.

Ronan’s casting is something of a coup for the BBC. She was Oscar-nominated, aged 13, for her performance as Briony Tallis in Atonement, and more recent credits include The Lovely Bones and Hanna.

Published in 1933, Testament of Youth chronicled the devastating effect of the Great War on the author’s generation. Brittain wrote from personal experience: her brother, fiancé and two closest friends all perished in the conflict.

She became a leading figure in the pacifist movement and her treatise on the rights of women saw her hailed as one of Britain’s great feminist thinkers.

Can you identify?

Science shows that the only way around some readers' prejudices is to trick them

The news of recent research documenting how readers identify with the main characters in stories has mostly been taken as confirmation of the value of literary role models. Lisa Libby, an assistant professor at Ohio State University and co-author of a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, explained that subjects who read a short story in which the protagonist overcomes obstacles in order to vote were more likely to vote themselves several days later.

The suggestibility of readers isn’t news. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel of a sensitive young man destroyed by unrequited love, “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” inspired a rash of suicides by would-be Werthers in the late 1700s. Jack Kerouac has launched a thousand road trips. Still, this is part of science’s job: Running empirical tests on common knowledge — if for no other reason than because common knowledge (and common sense) is often wrong.

A far more unsettling finding is buried in this otherwise up-with-reading news item. The Ohio State researchers gave 70 heterosexual male readers stories about a college student much like themselves. In one version, the character was straight. In another, the character is described as gay early in the story. In a third version the character is gay, but this isn’t revealed until near the end. In each case, the readers’ “experience-taking” — the name these researchers have given to the act of immersing oneself in the perspective, thoughts and emotions of a story’s protagonist — was measured.

Beenie Man releases YouTube video proclaiming support for gay rights

Jamaican reggae star Beenie Man, who achieved international stardom and infamy with songs that have included violently homophobic lyrics, has come out with a new video.

In the remarkable new clip, Beenie Man (Anthony Moses Davis) literally begs for forgiveness for his past sins, disavowing older songs with lyrics such as "Hang chi chi gal wid a long piece of rope" [Hang lesbians with a long piece of rope] and "Tek a bazooka and kill batty-fucker". [Take a bazooka and kill gay men]

Beenie Man said: "I respect each and every human being, regardless of which race or creed, regardless of which religious belief you believe in, and regardless of which sexual preference you are, including gays and lesbian people," he said:

"There is no one in this world is the same as they were 20 years ago – I know I am not. I was a kid and I come from Waterhouse, which is a small community. I never know what the world is like and what the world is all about. But now I know that people live in this world that live their life differently from my life. I still have to respect and love human beings."

With this seemingly heartfelt apology, the self-styled King of Dancehall joins a growing number of prominent musicians – notably in the often swaggeringly macho and homophobic rap world (a generalization, perhaps, but a hard one to refute) – to come out in support of gay rights.

so what do you guys think, sincere or not?

‘Think Like a Man’ Banned in France Due to All-Black Cast

France just keeps building on its reputation of hypocritical racial intolerance. Right on the heels of the controversy surrounding the Miss Black France pageant in Paris, news has come out that Steve Harvey’s highly successful film “Think Like a Man” has been banned in the country because of the lack of diversity in its cast. Global Voices exposed the issue rather pointedly, writing:

“Surprising as it may be, the answer lies in the fact that the film has an all-black cast. French cinema is often pointed at for not fairly displaying all components of the country’s multiethnic population. Although the recent success of the movie Les Intouchables, which earned French African actor Omar Sy the Cesar award for Best Actor in 2012, caused great pride and hope among French nationals from Africa and the Caribbean, it was not to be the turning point for a deep and lasting change.”

The 40 Most Ratchet Music Rumors

If there’s one thing the Internet can’t get enough of, it’s a ratchet rumor. Even before the 24/7 blogosphere came into existence, tabloid papers and radio talk shows were spreading hearsay everywhere from barber shops to grocery-store checkout lines. But thanks to advances in misinformation technology, what we have now is a nonstop "news” cycle of gossip, innuendo, and half-baked "truthiness."

As a public service Complex decided to round up 40 of the craziest, nuttiest, most ratchet-est rumors to ever hit pop music at put them to the test. Did Michael Jackson really cop the Elephant Man’s bones? Did Suge hang Vanilla Ice off a balcony for cold cash? Did Keith Richards snort his father's ashes? Those stories couldn't possibly be true—could they?

Carey Mulligan fronts Alzheimer's Society campaign

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hollywood actress Carey Mulligan is to front a PR campaign for dementia charity Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness and extend its reach.

As part of Dementia Awareness Week, Mulligan, whose grandmother Margaret was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2004, hopes to “shine a light” on the condition, which affects one in three people over the age of 65.

Alzheimer’s Society wants to reduce the stigma around dementia and hopes that backing from a young A-list celebrity will help it reach new audiences and get people talking about it more openly. It has created a five point guide to help people learn more about the condition as part of its ‘Remember the Person’ campaign.

Speaking at an event to launch Dementia Awareness Week which runs from 20 to 26 May, Mulligan said: “I am committed to helping the Alzheimer’s Society in any way I can. My family and I rely on the help of organisations like Alzheimer’s Society to help us understand the disease and guide us in the care of my grandmother.

“By speaking about my grandmother’s dementia I hope to shine a light on the condition. This Dementia Awareness Week we are asking people to ‘remember the person’ by looking beyond someone’s diagnosis of dementia and engaging with them.’

'Breaking Bad' fifth and final season air dates confirmed by AMC

AMC has confirmed the air dates for Breaking Bad's fifth and final season.

The US drama - starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul - will be split into two parts for its final season, in a similar vein to the final chapter of The Sopranos.

Meanwhile, AMC has also announced that new series Small Town Security will also launch on July 15, at 11pm.

The series follows a family-owned private security firm in Georgia, and will also run for eight episodes.

Friday Night Lights star Jesse Plemons has signed up to play a major role in the final season of Breaking Bad.

Creator Vince Gilligan recently told Digital Spy that he hopes UK fans will be able to watch the series on TV screens in the near future.

The Avengers gets the Charlie Brooker treatment.

Last Monday, because I've been feeling out of the loop, I resolved to catch the new Avengers movie. I call it "the Avengers movie" – in fact, the word "Assemble" was added to the UK release so it wouldn't be confused with the 1960s TV series of the same name. Thus the film I saw was called Marvel Avengers Assemble 3D, which sounds like a badly translated Japanese videogame from the mid-90s. Listen To A New Cheryl Cole Song

Cheryl Cole has kept a pretty low profile lately, but that should change soon when her new single “Call My Name” is officially released in a few weeks in the UK. The 28-year-old English singer looked magnificent as she posed through a tunnel and sort of danced with her dance crew in the music video for the Calvin Harris produced track, which premiered a few weeks ago, but we want to see MORE of the former Girls Aloud songstress!

Luckily, there's two brand-new tracks included on her “Call My Name” EP to satisfy your eardrums for now. Before you get too excited, keep in mind that these new songs are B-sides, and they're not as exciting as the first single. What is exciting though, is that they showcase two different vibes for her new album.

One of the two songs is “Telescope.” It's a beautifully written piano-driven ballad about her seeing her relationship coming to an end. The best part about the song, is that it's very simple, and really showcases her vocals. It's refreshing because I think that we sometimes get so caught up in Cheryl's celebrity persona, that we forget that before she was a celebrity judge on The X Factor and a huge fashion icon, it was her talent as a singer that started her career.

Bioshock Infinite delayed to Feb 2013 + Vita game also on hold

Delivering a rude shock to fans so eagerly yearning for the next installment to the revered FPS series, Irrational Games announced recently that BioShock Infinite will be shipped next year instead of its October 16, 2012 release date. February 26, 2013 is the new launch date for this game which is all geared up to take the series into a completely new environment set in a city suspended in the air by giant blimps and balloons.

Infusing the title with some specific ‘tweaks and improvements’ has been cited as the main reason behind this delay. Irrational Games claims the game contains elements that no one has ever put in a first-person shooter before. Also, the developer has disclosed that it has no plans to showcase this title at any big summer events such as E3 or Gamescom. That because, preparing for these shows apparently takes time away from development.

“I won’t kid you: BioShock Infinite is a very big game, and we’re doing things that no one has ever done in a first-person shooter. We had a similar experience with the original BioShock, which was delayed several months as our original ship date drew near. Why? Because the Big Daddies weren’t the Big Daddies you’ve since come to know and love. Because Andrew Ryan’s golf club didn’t have exactly the right swing. Because Rapture needed one more coat of grimy Art Deco,” said Ken Levine, creative director and co-founder of Irrational Games, on the developer’s official blog.

Chris Hemsworth talks possible Huntsman spin-off

Snow White And The Huntsman may still be a couple of weeks away from release but talk is already afoot of a potential prequel focussing on Chris Hemsworth's character, the Huntsman.

David Koepp is currently in talks to write a follow-up to the forthcoming fairy tale, and one of the most persistent rumours is that it will be a Huntsman-centric tale. As far as Hemsworth himself is concerned, he's happy to keep an open mind.

"I’ve heard probably the same rumours you have about possible sequels to this or prequels as far as the Huntsman’s storyline goes," says Hemsworth, when asked whether he would be interested in such a project. "If there’s an audience for it and people wanna see it and there’s a great script and room to do something different with it, absolutely."

As for the Huntsman's back-story, there would appear to be plenty of scope for further exploration. "We’re pretty elusive for the most of it," explains Hemsworth. "He begins having suffered some sort of trauma in a whole life before this point, and then at the end it’s left open as well."

"We had endless discussions about ‘where does he come from and why does he do this and what’s this about?’" he continues, "and it all of a sudden opened up all these ideas about his whole life prior to this."

Snow White And The Huntsman opens in the UK on 1 June 2012. Sounds like there's a new franchise in the offing...

Kristen Stewart is an A-list movie star who has two blockbusters on the way in 2012: Snow White and the Huntsman, and Breaking Dawn Part 2.
But that doesn't mean the actress finds her life especially exciting.
"I didn't go to f-cking school, I feel I would have had a bit something extra if I had," she tells the latest issue of Elle. "Maybe because my life is so f-cking perfect, when I see the other side of life, it just seems like, almost like I want...
"You can learn so much from bad things. I feel boring. I feel like, Why is everything so easy for me? I can't wait for something crazy to f-cking happen to me. Just life. I want someone to f-ck me over! Do you know what I mean?"
Among other topics touched on by Kristen in the interview:
Her top books: "East of Eden is my favorite, it's big, and then Cannery Row. I've read them all. Have you ever read Lie Down In Darkness? I want to play Peyton more than anything I can possibly taste or touch in my life. I want to play her so bad."
On riding horses as Snow White: "I hated it. I didn't take to the whole mentality of f-cking ordering that thing around – 'Go now!' You have to be an asshole, basically. Not to say that horse people are assholes to their horses. But you have to basically tell that thing who's boss, and I didn't want to do that. I was like, 'No, do your thing. I don't even want to be up here.'"
Wearing contact lenses for The Twilight Saga: "It’s like I always have sunglasses on – soulless, googly-eyed sunglasses. You can’t feel your eyeballs. They ruined me."

Gloriana to Release 2nd Album July 31st!

Country music trio Gloriana will release their much anticipated second studio album A Thousand Miles Left Behind on Emblem Music Group/Warner Bros. Records July 31st. The band had a hand in writing all 11 tracks on the album and worked with GRAMMY Award winning producer and Emblem Music Group label owner Matt Serletic (Willie Nelson, Matchbox 20, and Aerosmith). Their single “(Kissed You) Good Night” is currently #15 on the Billboard Country Singles chart and # has become the fastest rising single of the trio’s career.

“We’ve grown up a lot as a band and have really honed in on our skills and found our sound,” Mike says. “On this record, we wanted to tell stories and I think people will be able to relate to a lot of these songs because they’re honest and come from a place that’s real,” added Rachel. “Like any new act, we were finding ourselves on the first record — in the recording process and as musicians,” Tom says. “The new album really just feels like us, who and where we are now, to the point where we know exactly what we want to do and how to get there.”

Tom, Mike, and Rachel have funneled everything they’ve learned into their second album, A Thousand Miles Left Behind, intent on revealing more of themselves as artists. The result is an alluring mix of up-tempo songs, “Wanna Take You Home,” “Sunset Lovin’,” “Go On…Miss Me,” “Doin’ It Our Way,” and graceful, heartfelt tunes: current single “(Kissed You) Good Night,” “Can’t Shake You,” “Turn My World Around,” “Carolina Rose,” and “Soldier Song”. Gloriana worked with some of Nashville’s finest songwriters for the album including Josh Kear (Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum), Hillary Lindsey (Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift), James Slater (Martina McBride and Tim McGraw), Danny Myrick (Jason Aldean and Big & Rich), Stephanie Bentley (Martina McBride and Faith Hill), among others.

Not a fan of the cover art but cannot wait for this album! They will be performing on The Bachelorette tonight on ABC, as well.

DC Comics to switch the sexual orientation of an established character

Comics fans and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) blogosphere are abuzz with news that a major DC Comics character will "come out" in a future issue.

Details of the character and the specific story arc are relatively scarce thus far, but as Bleeding Cool is reporting, DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio told attendees at the Kapow Comic Convention in London that the superhero - an established player in one of the series, and who was originally introduced as straight - will become "one of our most prominent gay characters."

Previously, DC's policy has been to introduce new LGBT characters rather than switch the orientation of existing characters. When asked why DC would switch race, size, age, and other identifying features of characters, but not orientation, DiDio explained that they had changed DC’s policy in this regard.

As Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne explained, just like the President of the United States, the co-publisher’s policy on this “has evolved.”

I think Nick has improved and I hope S2 brings out more of his kick ass side. I can do w/o Hank. I wouldn't mind a different sidekick. Maybe promote Sgt Wu? He def needs more screen time. I also like Rosalee as a love interest for Monroe and hope they delve more into that next season. And they def need to answer more about Capt. Renard. I was disappoint they overlooked this in the finale especially. So what do the other 9 fans think?

Also I'll keep requesting a Grimm tag until I get one, tyvm!

James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain to star in two films together

James McAvoy will star opposite Jessica Chastain in Myriad Pictures' double-feature film project "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His" and "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers."

Ned Benson wrote the two scripts and will direct both films. Shooting is set to start in July.

Myriad had announced the two-film project in February, prior to the Berlin market, with Chastain and Joel Edgerton signed on to star in a love story that explores a New York City couple's relationship during a difficult time in their marriage from the perspectives of the restaurant-owner husband and of the wife, who goes back to college.

Each film will be a stand-alone movie. Cassandra Kulukundis is producing.

Is It Time To Rate Young Adult Books for Mature Content?

A new report finds that nearly all young adult bestsellers contain at least some profanity

Most parents are happy to see their kids nose down in a book, but according to a new report, they might want to check out what they're reading more closely.

Among the top 40 New York Times best-selling children's books published between June 22 and July 6, 2008, one researcher found more than 1,500 profane words, ranging from Gossip Girl—The Caryles's 50 "F-bombs" to Diary of a Wimpy Kid's occasional reference of bodily functions. Sarah Coyne, lead researcher of the study and a professor in Brigham Young University's department of family life, checked for profanity in five different categories: George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words," sexual words, excretory words, 'strong others' (bastard, bitch) and 'mild others' (hell, damn). All but five books, including many targeted to kids as young as 9, had at least one instance of profanity.

Coyne thinks a ratings system on book jackets would help parents decide what's appropriate for their kids to read. It's a subject many are afraid to touch, with the talk of censorship or restricting books conjuring up images of book burnings and infringing on First Amendment Rights.

"I think we put books on a pedestal compared to other forms of media," Coyne says. "I thought long and hard about whether to do the study in the first place—I think banning books is a terrible idea, but a content warning on the back I think would empower parents."

Tabloids Try To Ruin Flawless Marriage With Lies

Hilary Duff wants her husband to be a stay-at-home dad.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
The actress and singer gave birth to son Luca on March 20, and since her husband Mike Comrie has retired, she has decided he should look after their new addition when she resumes her film career.

A source said: ''Hilary told Mike that since he's retired she's now the family breadwinner, he should be the stay-at-home parent.

''She had Mike trained to do diapers and bottle feedings, and she has put him in charge of other household duties, including making breakfast, doing laundry and light cleaning.''

Hilary, 24, has wasted no time getting back to work following the birth of Luca, and was spotted leaving the gym less than two weeks after her son was born.

The source added to the National Enquirer magazine: ''Mike loves his son and is enjoying the bonding time, but he jokes he feels more like Hilary's slave than her husband.

''Meanwhile, Hilary goes to Pilates classes five times a week, and she's out shopping and doing lunches with girlfriends most afternoons. She buzzes around town to meetings and auditions.''

Currently Hilary has no movies scheduled, but she recently finished shooting 'She Wants Me'.

After 8 Seasons, "House" Ends

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
House shuttered itself on Monday night. The first hour, titled “Swan Song,” consisted of a retrospective of the series’ eight seasons, 177 episodes, with lots of behind-the-scenes interviews with the crew and co-stars, some of them conducted by star Hugh Laurie, and a paintball fight.

The second hour, “Everybody Dies,” featured a typically baffling medical case for Dr. Gregory House, which was only a first-half-hour cover for what really mattered, including numerous guest faces from the past, and which requires in this spot a

Four Minutes Of 'The Master' Footage Screens At Cannes; First Reactions Here

While we're incredibly grateful that "The Master" crew decided to grace the rest of us with the first teaser trailer for the film this morning, critics in Cannes were even luckier. Invited journalists were invited to Weinstein Company party showing off footage from "Django Unchained," "The Silver Linings Playbook" and most importantly, "The Master." While some wondered this morning if they would be shown the same footage in the teaser, that was not the case. They were treated to about 4 minutes of scenes from the film total and got apparently a much broader look at the film with scenes featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and more.

The Wrap says:

“The Master” seems destined for controversy. Paul Thomas Anderson has written a tale that is loosely inspired on the life of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. The short piece shown was enough to suggest that Anderson (“Magnolia,” “There Will Be Blood”) has again taken on an epic subject and will face it down fearlessly.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, in moustache and suspenders, plays The Master, the Hubbard-like leader of what is referred to as The Cause. Amy Adams, in fierce dramatic scenes, plays his headstrong wife.

Joaquin Phoenix is the center of the story as a postwar drifter, searching for a path and racked by anguish or mental illness or both.

In one scene, The Master demands: “Is your life a struggle? Is your behavior erratic?”
It looks ambitious and exciting, though no frogs appear to fall. Remains to be seen what the never-shy Church of Scientology will have to say about this portrayal, however fictionalized.
