Nicki Minaj: "I guess I am pop culture just because what I'm doing seems to be popular."

'I don't ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it,' Nicki Minaj tells MTV News of her growing popularity.

Who says divas have to be difficult? After her performance at the start of the NBA's 2012 All-Star Game on Sunday, Nicki Minaj graciously invited MTV News into her dressing room before she even got a chance to catch her breath. Once inside, the reigning rap queen spoke on balancing her pop status with her hip-hop background and used her recent Grammy performance to contextualize things.

"That's just who I am. I was a theater major; I studied theater," Nicki Minaj told MTV News. "It's funny because, even with the Grammys, that wasn't the first time I've done theater. Like 'Moment 4 Life,' I did a skit I was pretending to be an old lady, Martha, when I did 'Right Thru Me,' I did a skit. I always try to do that when I have the forum to do it."

Before she took the stage to perform "Roman Holiday" at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony, Nicki prefaced her stage show with the "Exorcism of Roman" mini-movie. Her recent theatrics, which have drawn a ton of criticism, aren't a far cry from the skits that appeared in her "Moment 4 Life" and "Right Thru Me" videos.

Nicki may have started out a rapper, but she has grown to be so much more. A number of her recently released songs, which are being used to set up her sophomore Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, have been pop affairs. From the RedOne-produced "Starships" to "Roman Holiday," there will be songs that will exist outside of the canon of traditional hip-hop. However, Nicki's recently released "Roman Reloaded" single featuring Lil Wayne proves that she can still spit bars with the best of them. (After all, she did rank #4 on MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game" list.) Still, Nicki insists that she is merely being herself.

"I guess I am pop culture just because what I'm doing seems to be popular. When people want to do what you're doing, it's kinda popular," she reasoned. "I don't ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it. It's not about black or white; I think it's just a statement. It doesn't matter which color you are; it's just a statement of being fearless."

Being fearless is also about knowing when to cut an interview short. "OK, bye, y'all. Get out of my dressing room," Nicki joked.

The video interview wouldn't embed for some reason so you'll have to watch it at the source.

Ke$ha's 20 Most Controversial Comments

Today, Ke$ha celebrates her 25th birthday, but don't expect her to go through a quarter-life crisis. Judging by her quotes, the queen of glitter and self-proclaimed "beard fiend" is really comfortable with herself, even if that person happens to be a little manic and unpredicatble. The pop singer has been dropping salicious soundbites since she blew up with "Tik Tok" two years ago, and there's just something awesome about a woman who speaks her mind.

Kate Beckinsale joins child literacy campaign

Kate Beckinsale is helping kick-off National Reading Month by teaming up with “The Nestlé Share the Joy of Reading Program” to raise awareness about the importance of children’s literacy. On Thursday (March 1), the former Oxford University student visited Barnes and Nobles at The Grove in Los Angeles to read to young children and to speak about her own love of books.

On life with a teenage daughter.
“I’m literally a couple months into that. It has been largely about Bar Mitzvahs lately! I had a child young enough that it doesn’t feel too far away from my own experience. I feel like I flunked at adolescence really badly. I found it really difficult. I’m very supportive of how tricky seventh and eighth grade are for girls. I think it’s a very difficult time, but she’s doing great.”
On her love of reading.
“I grew up as an only child and my mother was also an only child, so we were both very passionate about reading. I think I passed that on to my daughter, who went plowing through Harry Potter and every other book possible! I just think especially in this day and age when you’re constantly fighting the pull of the Internet and television, there’s something about reading that is an active thing for children to do. It opens up their world completely and improves their vocabulary and they can use their imagination. I’m quite old fashioned about things like that, and I really do believe it’s terribly important.”
On her favorite books as a kid.
“I loved all the E. Nesbit books like Five Children and It and The Enchanted Castle. As I got older, we had a real craze in our country called The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, which everybody was really into. I was reading Jane Eyre when I was 11 and I loved that. Actually, my daughter read Jane Eyre when she was 11, too. I wasn’t very frightened of classic novels. I feel like my brain is more geared towards a novel than it is to a movie. “
She’s a fan of The Hunger Games.
“Oh yeah! Actually, my daughter’s school encouraged all the parents and teachers and students to read The Hunger Games, so it promoted a massive discussion of it. For some reason, my daughter was a little bit resistant to it at first, but then we just were all completely overwhelmed by it. It was actually this summer that we were all reading it and loving it. We can’t wait for the movie. It looks fantastic.”

Footballers share French kiss on the field.

A goal celebration kiss between two French footballers at the Weserstadion in Bremen, Germany is making some headlines in Europe.

The Local reports:

Mathieu Debuchy, a midfielder with Lille, passed the ball to Montpellier player Olivier Giroud, who scored. Debuchy then ran to Giroud who grabbed his head with both hands and kissed his teammate. The video clip of the embrace was played repeatedly on news shows and shared online. #Debuchy was still a trending Twitter tag on Thursday morning. The goal was Giroud's first for his national team. He is currently the top scorer this year in France's leading football league, Ligue 1.

Not exactly breaking news but hot footballers kissing each other is always post worthy.

One Direction sells out in flawless New Zealand

UK pop sensations One Direction's New Zealand tour sold out within ten minutes this morning.

Eager fans bought more than 1,000 tickets a minute for the band's three shows in Auckland and Wellington in April.

Due to the overwhelming demand, a second Auckland show was added, with tickets going on sale immediately and also selling out.

More than 10,000 tickets were sold in total.
I'd just like to point out that there are bigger stadiums in New Zealand. We aren't completely povo. The promoters just chose a really crap venue out in the ghetto.

More "Percy Jackson" Casting

Casting continues to chug along on the second Percy Jackson & The Olympians picture, which, as we reported a few weeks back, will be subtitled The Sea of Monsters. Original stars Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario will return for the follow up, as will supporting players Brandon T. Jackson, Jake Abel and Melina Kanakaredes. But three actress – two with Oscar cred – are lending their talents to the proceedings, according to Variety.

Mary Birdsong (The Descendants), Missi Pyle (The Artist) and Community star Yvette Nicole Brown have been added to the Percy Jackson ensemble. They will play the three Fates, sisters from classic mythology who share one eye. In this modern version, they will be portrayed as taxi-driving siblings, and they’ll help Jackson along on his latest quest.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid helmer Thor Fredenthal will direct the sequel, taking over the reigns from original director Chris Columbus (who’ll produce). Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski penned the screenplay, which also makes room for Cyclops (Douglas Smith, Big Love), Percy’s half-brother who helps the main character try to find the Golden Fleece in the titular sea of monsters.

The original Percy Jackson was a decent-sized hit, earning $226.5M worldwide. The sequel is targeting a March 27, 2013 release date, and so far is shaping up with an impressive cast.

The Voice: #1 show in February

Paced by the combination of NBC Sports’ February 5 coverage of the Super Bowl and primetime’s #1 series for the month, “The Voice,” NBC has won the February 2012 Nielsen Sweep in the key demographic of adults 18-49 and ranks #1 or tied for #1 in all other key demographics.

The hit Monday singing competition “The Voice” finished as the #1 series for the February sweep in adults, men and women 18-34; adults, men (tie) and women 18-49; adults and women 25-54; kids 2-11 and teens 12-17, led by results for its February 5 season premiere following the Super Bowl. In adults 18-49, “The Voice” averaged a 7.5rating for the month and in total viewers, “The Voice” delivered 19.4 million persons.

With all 28 nights of the February 2-29 period now measured, “most current” averages in adults 18-49 for the month are: NBC (a 3.7 rating), CBS (3.0), Fox (3.0), ABC (2.5) and CW (0.7). In total viewers, “most current” sweep averages are CBS (12.2 million), NBC (10.4 million), Fox (8.5 million), ABC (7.8 million) and CW (1.6 million).

With this year’s boosts from the Super Bowl and “The Voice,” NBC is up versus the year-ago February sweep by 131 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 3.7 from a 1.6) and up 86 percent in total viewers (10.4 million vs. 5.6 million). According to “most current” results for the sweep, NBC is #1 or tied for #1 in all key demographics – adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54.

The combination of “The Voice” and the critically acclaimed new drama “Smash” (3.1 rating in 18-49, 8.9 viewers overall) helped NBC triple its Monday 18-49 average rating from the year-ago February 2011 sweep (with a 5.2 vs. a 1.7). source

Angie's Smarter Than Us All. The Leg Seen Round the World Was But a Ploy to Distract From Baby Bump.

Rumors are swirling that Angelina Jolie is pregnant! I know, rumors are always swirling that some celebrity is pregnant, but it seems Angelina really is! Sources are speculating that Angelina is indeed expecting. So here's the signs: While everyone was so focused on that famous leg at the Oscar's this weekend, we all overlooked her belly. It was appropriately covered up by that poufy dress. And it was black, the go-to color to conceal a pregnancy. And now it seems so obvious why she kept jutting.

Hilegendary Duff's Musical Return

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

See, if you hadn't heard, Hilary Duff has been pregnant for the last ten years (approximately), but even while she's looking radiant as the most adorably enormous pregnant person ever, she's been back in the studio working with some major talents on an album that I'm expecting to blow my mind apart. This week, I'm taking a look back at Hilary Duff's criminally underrated career as the pop princess to beat -- and making some educated guesses about what we can expect on her next studio album. Buckle up, because the return of the Great Hilegend is quite literally what dreams are made of.

Before the era of Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato, there was Hilary Duff, the OG millennial Disney princess-turned-pop star. If her musical career feels like a distant memory, I can't hold it against you since Hilary has spent the last several years working on other projects, like guest starring on "Gossip Girl," shooting a handful of respected independent films, writing a pair of young adult fiction novels, launching a clothing line with DKNY, getting married to hunky hockey player Mike Comrie, and most recently, getting spectacularly and glamorously pregnant. Clearly, she's a Renaissance woman, but despite her acting roots -- Hilary first rose to prominence playing the title role in the wildly successful Disney Channel original series "Lizzie McGuire" -- for me, her primary strength has always been her work as a recording artist. Hilary might not be a Beyonce-level vocal talent, but that's never stopped her from making addictively listenable dance-pop music, which she was doing way before it was back in vogue. Actor-turned-singers are often unfairly attacked for being pedestrian or manufactured or talentless, but that doesn't change the fact that their musical instincts are sometimes right on the money, as, I think, Hilary's have been.

Hilary Duff's 2002 debut (not counting the holiday album released a year earlier), Metamorphosis, was bubblegum pop with a few surprising highlights, most notably the fuzzy The Matrix-produced pop-rock jam "So Yesterday," which fits nicely among the Avril and Ashlee singles of the day, and the swirly, downtempo techno of "Come Clean," which memorably served as the theme song for the MTV series "Laguna Beach"; listening today, it's unarguably one of the most interesting hits from that era of Top 40 pop music, which was dominated by anodyne guitar pop. Her self-titled follow-up in 2004 continued in the pop-rock vein, but failed to produce any major charting singles.

Taylor Kitsch Feels 'Weird' About Heartthrob Status

'I only have about 6,200 mirrors at my house,' he jokes during 'MTV First: John Carter.'

Those who are most familiar with Taylor Kitsch likely know him from one role and one show: Tim Riggins and "Friday Night Lights." The tortured hero is a special favorite among Kitsch's female fans and catapulted him to serious heartthrob status.

When MTV News caught up with Kitsch during "MTV First: John Carter" on Thursday, we asked if it ever gets old being objectified.

"Yes, it gets old," he admitted. "It makes you feel weird. You get awkward like I am right now. Hopefully, it doesn't turn into validation of self. It is what it is. It's flattering, but at the end of the day, I only have about 6,200 mirrors at my house," he joked. "It's no big deal. Who doesn't?"

LJ You In Danger Girl

As Russia prepares to elect a new president this weekend, voters are more fired up than they have been for a decade. It's partly due to an internet revolution that has challenged the state's power to control public opinion - and to the blogging platform LiveJournal.

A month before the election, a liberal opposition group carried out a brazen stunt, hanging a massive anti-Putin banner across the river from the Kremlin. It showed the prime minister's face crossed out, and the words "Putin, leave".

The banner was hastily removed, but photos of the action reached millions of Russians via the blog of Ilya Yashin, the group's leader and one of a small army of opposition activists currently spreading their word through the Russian blogosphere.

In a country with tightly controlled TV and few independent newspapers and radio stations, the internet is a vital space for alternative opinion. Almost all of it appears on the blogging platform LiveJournal, known in Russian as Zhivoy Zhurnal, or simply ZheZhe.

Set up by US developer Brad Fitzpatrick in 1998, as a way to communicate online with his friends, LiveJournal - complete with its mascot "Frank the goat" - may seem at first sight a strange medium for Russia's new-found political vibrancy.

Queen of all music Mariah Carey stuns in first post baby performance & more

Mariah Carey hid in front of 150 people, patting her face with a tissue, the spotlight turned off at her request. She said she was stalling for time, something "those who know her" would understand. She tossed the tissues aside; they fluttered in the air like her eyelashes, her long hair, her fingertips, her voice.

Mariah high-stepped back to the center of the stage, her black floor-length gown coming to life with every twist of her hips. "I didn't really know it was a big drama like that," she said, "like it was my first time coming to the stage since having them babies."

Mike Epps Goes Ape Shit On His Daughter: “You Little Disrespectful Bitch!’

It looks like Mike Epps’ 18-year-old daughter Bria decided to put her daddy issues on display today when she called the cops on him after he threatened to “f*ck her up” during an argument they had on the phone. Now, she’s released audio from the conversation, and there hasn’t been a profanity-laden celebrity phone call this bad since Mel Gibson’s ex-girl put his phone calls on blast.

Bria says the argument began with her father after he gave two of his children a shoutout on ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ but neglected to mention the others, including her. Mike married his wife Michelle in 2006 and was acknowledging the two children they have together on the show, so Bria felt scorned about being left out and called her father to give him a piece of her mind, threatening to air some of their family drama to the media. Bioshock Infinite gets release date

2K Games has announced the release date for its much anticipated first-person 'shooter', Bioshock Infinite. The game – available for Xbox, PC and PS3 – will hit US stores on 16 October with an international release following on 19 October.

The company's press release makes no mention of the PS Vita version of Bioshock, teased at last year's E3 exhibition in Los Angeles. However, that title is expected to be an original instalment in the best-selling series.

Created by Massachusetts-based developer Irrational Games, Bioshock Infinite looks set to be one of the most fascinating releases of the year. Set in 1912 in an alternative steampunk version of the US, it follows a Pinkerton agent named Booker DeWitt who must escape the floating city of Columbia, together with a mysterious 'AI companion', Elizabeth.

The game has drawn plaudits for its stunning visuals, featuring the same 'steampunk' universe as the previous two titles, but more-so for its background of domestic political unrest, with an established isolationalist government fighting an emerging culture of grass roots agitiation. Parallels have been drawn with the current Tea Party Movement.

Designer Ken Levine has spoken about the way in which the game explores opposing interpretations of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights – not the usual concerns of an FPS. "BioShock Infinite has been our sole focus for the last four years, and we can't wait for fans to get their hands on it," he said.

CW casts Willa Holland in Arrow Pilot

Ever since Willa Holland secured a gig on the later seasons of The O.C., the model-turned-actress has been slowly but surely building her resume, appearing in such films as Legion and Straw Dogs, and nabbing a stint on The CW’s Gossip Girl. Since Holland has been pretty faithful to The CW with her TV work, it is really no surprise Holland has signed on with the network for her latest role.

Holland has been cast in Arrow, the new superhero franchise the CW is hoping will find the same audience as the network’s former superhero hit, the Superman retellingSmallville. Arrow will be a modern-day retelling of the famous Green Arrow DC Comics franchise. Holland is not the first actor to be cast in the Arrow pilot. In fact, the pilot should be well on its way, with Canadian actor Stephen Amell set to play the lead character, a billionaire superhero named Oliver Queen.

If there is one thing Green Arrow’s stories are never short on, it is characters. So who will Holland play? According to Deadline, Holland is on board to portray Thea Queen, the younger sister of Oliver. In the show, Thea, a debutante, will prove to be quite a bit of trouble, often attempting some sort of rebellion or another.

Idec, this is a thinly veiled attempt to have some Willa on ONTD. She's gorgeous and I'm shallow tbh

Entertainment Weekly predicts the spring's biggest songs

What will be this spring's biggest song(s)?

A handful of songs are ready to break Kelly Clarkson and Adele’s stronghold on the upper tier of the pop charts.

This week, British boy band The Wanted‘s “Glad You Came” shot up from number 23 all the way to number 5 on the Hot 100 (not to brag, but we diiid say, “‘Glad You Came’ feels like a potential radio/club titan poised to become a hit” back in early February), and it’s likely that the boy-band jam will continue its ascent in the weeks to come.

#horsegate: David Cameron admits he did ride Rebekah Brooks' horse

Remember when the News of the World folded last summer over a crisis centred around phone-hacking and invasions of privacy, sparking accusation that certain politicians and the Metropolitan Police were far to cosy with the media and News International in particular?

Well, the story has reared it's head again this week.

David Cameron has confirmed that he did ride the horse lent by police to the former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks, prompting Labour to urge him to "come clean" about the extent of his relationship with the ex-News International chief executive.

Hopes that the prime minister could draw a line under his friendship with Brooks faded after his admission embroiled him in a saga perhaps inevitably becoming known as Horsegate.

Cameron apologised for allowing a "confusing picture" about his direct connection with the animal to emerge over recent days.

Kanye West designs for Giuseppe Zanotti

Kanye West is prepping to hit the Paris runways again with his Spring 2012 collection of his clothing line.  But what's catching everyone's eye today is what is about to hit stores soon--Kanye's $5,800 beaded shoe he co-designed with Italian designer Giuseppe Zanotti.

Kanye is about to get his much anticipated women's shoe distributed in his fave French upscale retailer, Colette.

The retailer recently tweeted they are stocking styles from his Spring 2012 collection, saying:

Giuseppe Zanotti for KW @kanyewest available @coletteparis

For his (pictured above) unique, pearl-encrusted wooly/crocheted heels, he worked closely with Mr. Zanotti.  And we're told the shoe will run you close to $6,000.

What's the most expensive piece of clothing/shoes/handbag you've bought ONTD?

Rihanna thinks single life is overrated

In the wake of spending time with her ex, Chris Brown, in recent months, Rihanna has admitted that she's not a fan of flying solo.

"Single life is so overrated," Rihanna, 24, said on Britain's The Jonathan Ross Show. "It sucks. I have such incredible experiences in my life. You don't want to live your life and then meet someone. You want to share your life with someone. That's what I'm missing right now."

Though she insisted that she's "not looking," the "We Found Love" singer said she'd "love to date somebody cool, fun, funny."

She'll likely have a number of suitors to choose from. Rihanna had to fight off all sorts of male attention during a recent trip to London, where she partied for four days straight.

A Pinterest for men:

Kids crafts, wedding cakes and sappy quotes clearly aren’t for everyone.

A new site called, spoofing newly popular social site Pinterest, allows men to share “Interesting. Man. Things” in much the same way.

Pinterest, which has allowed users to share images by “pinning” them on “boards” since 2010, has been lauded as hugely successfully, hitting 11.7 million unique monthly U.S. visitors in February, according to TechCruch.

But the demographic is 68.2 per cent female, according to Modea, a Washington-based digital advertising agency. is geared toward the untapped demographic. It also allows users to sign up instantly — poking fun at Pinterest’s approval system. The site states “Invites are lame! Get started today” — and start “nailing” images to their “workbench” and share with others.

So far the site is dominated by meaty sandwiches, cars and men’s apparel.

Like Pinterest, users can add a bookmarklet to their browser to quickly “nail” images they like.

MANteresting was registered in 2011 and launched in February this year.

It was “co-founded by two dudes that had one goal; Make the internet more awesome.”

Pinterest has been criticized of late for copyright concerns. While many images shared are secured for copyright, Pinterest terms of use require users to be responsible for uploading images they own and any user can flag photos that are protected.

MANteresting has a “designated copyright agent” to report copyright infringement to.

Oprah gets perhaps the exclusive of the year: an interview with Bobbi Kristina

Oprah Winfrey still has it. She has snagged an exclusive interview with the late Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, for Oprah’s Next Chapter airing Sunday, March 11 at 9 p.m.

In addition to Bobbi Kristina, Winfrey will speak to Houston’s sister-in-law and manager Patricia Houston, and brother Gary Houston.

According to a release from the network, “Bobbi Kristina shares personal memories of her mom and how she would like the iconic superstar to be remembered. The family also addresses the rumors and speculation surrounding Houston’s death.”

Before the interview at 7 p.m., OWN will re-air its special, Remembering Whitney: The Oprah Interview, which features the singer’s 2009 interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Winfrey’s own personal memories of the star.

The initial Feb. 16 airing of the Remembering Whitney special, which aired within a week of Whitney Houston's sudden death, brought in 830,000 viewers and offered solid showings in weekend encores.

OWN, which struggled with viewership in its first year, is seeing an upswing in its year-over-year ratings as Winfrey has stepped into a more on-screen role with shows like Oprah’s Next Chapter and Oprah’s Lifeclass.

Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe Returning to 'Horror Story'

Three more American Horror cast members from Season 1, regular Evan Peters and recurring Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe, will return for the anthology series’ second season as regulars. They will join Jessica Lange and Zachary Quinto, all playing new characters in a new setting at a East Coast institution. AHS co-creator Ryan Murphy just made the announcement during the show’s PaleyFest panel. “We don’t want to talk about it too much, we’re still writing, anybody could pop up at any time,” he said. He didn’t want to elaborate on the returning actors’ new characters, saying only that “everyone is playing the opposite of what they played before.” Season 2 of AHS will start shooting in July.

Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman to star in 'Railway Man'

The Academy Award-winning actress was persuaded by Firth and producer Andy Paterson to star in The Railway Man, which is based on the true story of Eric Lomax, a second lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals who was captured by Japanese forces.
