Mandy Moore not 'Tangled' in nets as she promotes malaria prevention

What's Mandy Moore giving for the holidays? Mosquito nets. The singer-songwriter-actress, the voice of Rapunzel in the new animated film Tangled, is working with international non-profit health group Population Services International and the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign to provide Africans at high risk for malaria with mosquito nets. Malaria is a mosquito-borne illness that kills nearly one million people a year, mostly children in Africa (90% of malaria deaths occur in Africa, 92% of those deaths are in children under 5).

Moore talked with USA TODAY reporter Mary Brophy Marcus from the Central African Republic (CAR) in October and again this week from back home in Los Angeles.

Q. We spoke a few months ago when you were in the Central African Republic distributing mosquito nets. How was your trip?
A. We distributed nets to thousands of people and helped the ministry of health there and our United Nations partners to hang the nets and educate families about how to use them.

Q.Malaria hits children hardest?
A. Every 45 seconds a child dies of malaria. That's mind boggling and one of the reasons that compelled me to get involved in the Nothing But Nets campaign.

"I don't have any nieces or nephews, but I was asked by a good friend to leave a message for his daughter as Rapunzel, which I did, and he sent me a video of her listening to the message and that just made it all worth it."
OMG I wish I could hear that message - that sounds sooooo cute!!

Christina Aguilera lived up to her reputation as a diva ahead of last night’s show by refusing to speak to any of the finalists – including Rebecca Ferguson, her duet partner.

An X Factor insider who witnessed the rehearsals said: ‘Christina was being a diva. She folded her arms on stage, didn’t talk to Rebecca and then walked straight off afterwards.’

The American singer – who is notorious for such outlandish requests as vitamin C tablets in the shape of Flintstone characters – had already demanded a closed set to rehearse her UK hit Beautiful with single mother Rebecca, 24. Only essential staff were allowed to stay.

Julian Lennon is a Patron

As a childhood friend of Julian Lennon, Lucy Vodden inspired The Beatles' classic Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.

Her death last year at the age of 46 has now spurred the son of John Lennon to become patron of the charity fighting lupus, the little-known disease of the immune system that killed Vodden.

"He officially accepted the offer to become patron last week," says Angie Davidson, the campaign director of the St Thomas' Lupus Trust.

"Julian's been a big supporter of the trust since he found out his friend Lucy was ill. We're very lucky to have him. He's a lovely, kind person; he has never refused any of our requests."

She adds: "I'm sure Lucy would be thrilled to bits: she'll be looking down from the sky, saying, well done, Julian."

The lyrics to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds describe a watercolour painting that Julian, who is now 47, created at nursery school. It depicted Lucy, who was in his class, with diamond-shaped eyes surrounded by stars.

Julian, who is best known for his 1984 hit song Too Late For Goodbyes, got back in touch with Lucy when he heard that she was battling the disease.

'Craigslist Killer' TV Movie Coming to Lifetime in January

Here's the synopsis from Lifetime: "The Craigslist Killer" follows the dark, mysterious life Philip Markoff (Jake McDorman, "Greek") conducted online while preparing for a promising future as a doctor and a life of happiness with his fiancée, Megan McAllister (Agnes Bruckner, "Private Practice"). Seemingly destined for greatness as one of Boston University’s brightest med students, Markoff could do no wrong in the eyes of Megan, his friends, fellow students and professors. But hidden from those close to him was the violent wrath only he and his victims knew — beginning with his alleged April 14, 2009, first-degree murder of a masseuse who advertised her services on Craigslist. When police discover that the brutal killing and a number of other attacks on women were all connected to advertisements placed on Craigslist, their investigation ultimately leads them to Markoff. William Baldwin ("Backdraft") portrays the lead detective investigating the case. "The Craigslist Killer" premieres on Monday, January 3rd at 9 pm.

NGL, I will totally watch this. The trailer is kind of creepy, and the movie is coming to us from the network behind Jennifer Love Hewitt's universally acclaimed "The Client List."

Natasha Bedingfield Remembers When GaGa Was Her Opening Act

The amazingly talented Natasha Bedingfield's new album 'Strip Me' is in stores now, and she just sat down at my new TV show, 'Naughty But Nice With Rob,' to reveal what it was like watching Lady Gaga go from her warm-up act to one of the biggest stars in the world.

"She's amazing," Natasha tells me. "It was obvious to everyone even back them that she was going to be a huge star because she is so talented."

Miley Cyrus’ Bong Controversy — Will This Make Her A Bigger Star?

Miley’s number 13 on the Forbes list of the 100 richest and most powerful Hollywood performers for 2010 (Angelina Jolie was #18, Ellen DeGeneres was #23) and she made $48 million this year — so clearly she’s doing something right! Some would say that the new video of her smoking a bong would put her empire in jeopardy, but our expert says it will probably help her career in the long run.

Miley, of course, first rose to fame as the star of Hannah Montana, but she’s grown into a huge celebrity in her own right, starring in the hit movie “The Last Song” and selling out tour dates across the country. On her last tour, Miley did 57 concerts, with each show grossing an average of $1.2 million! Plus she gets a cut of any Hannah Montana merchandise that Disney sells—t-shirts, DVDs, toys, etc.

But Miley chose not to renew her contract with Disney and it expires in 2011—the current season of Hannah Montana will be the last. Now 18, Miley must be thinking of her career’s next phase.

“She has a brilliant marketing team,” says Dr. Keith Ablow, psychologist, Fox News contributor and the author of the upcoming book, The Seven Wonders That Will Change Your Life. “She has to shed that ‘good girl’ image if she wants to build a billion-dollar brand. She doesn’t have a ton of talent, but she has the raw sexuality of a young girl growing into a beautiful young woman and she has a willingness to sell that.”

On the other hand, image consultant Robert K. Passikoff tells us “it doesn’t matter that [salvia] is legal in California because this goes counter to image….The whole issue is that this is not the kind of behavior that sponsors want…You’re talking about the heir to the magic kingdom. If it’s her you don’t do it…and you don’t video tape it.”

Another Hollywood image consultant, Michael Sands, agrees. “I believe a lot of kids that idolize Miley will want to try this plant and I think that once the parents catch onto what their children are doing they will not let thier children purchase Miley’s products and her products will take a hit…She will rebound from this. In the short term it will be bad but she is talented…What a fool to have your friends video tape this!”

The bong-smoking video is just the lastest episode in Miley’s year-long campaign to become the anti-Hannah Montana. “Our culture rewards anything short of murder,” says Dr. Ablow. “She wants to do something edgy, but not illegal. I think she’s doing it so her customer base will explode.”

Cheryl Cole sounds like a muppet to Americans, claims Simon Cowell

American viewers think Cheryl Cole sounds like hurdy-gurdy Muppet the Swedish Chef, claims Simon Cowell.

TV bosses in the US have been screentesting the Geordie with audiences after she agreed to join The X Factor supremo's judging panel in the States.

They say viewers have been won over by the Promise This singer's beauty, style and bubbly personality - but many cannot make out a word she says.

And Simon has been teasing Cheryl that one viewer likened her accent to that of The Muppet Show character - whose catchphrase is "bork, bork!".

A source said: "US audiences can't get the accent - some say she's Irish or Welsh, which Cheryl thought was funny. Simon's really been ribbing her with the Swedish Chef comment.

"Cheryl doesn't know if he's making it up or if someone really said it, but she's hoping it's the former.

"A lot of viewers struggled, not just with the accent but with some of Cheryl's northern phrases."

Meanwhile stressed Cheryl, 27, has recruited Girls Aloud bandmate Kimberley Walsh's hunky brother Adam to help her chill out.

Adam, 26, has been offering her advice and support as she copes with the upheaval of selling the £6million mansion she shared with ex Ashley.

Eva Amurri is engaged

What does a girl do when she can't contain her excitement? Gush on Twitter, of course. At least that's what Eva Amurri did this weekend.

"What a week: I became a cartoon character, did a Maxim shoot, and got engaged! Lol. Not bad, not bad. Thanks for all the congrats!!" the 25-year-old actress posted Saturday.

"The most wonderful man on this planet" she refers to in an earlier Tweet is none other than her boyfriend Kyle Martino, 29, a former MLS soccer player who is now a Fox Soccer Channel commentator. He is originally from Connecticut, and the couple now live together in California.

Amurri's rep also confirms the engagement, telling PEOPLE: "They just got engaged and both couldn't be happier."

Congratulations. And holy crap, she looks so much like Susan I did a double take.

Ten Celebs Share Who They Want To Play Them In Their Biopic

Kylie Minogue has had a movie-worthy life between the soap operas, the locomotion, a comeback, and a battle with cancer. But it would probably be best, if said film is ever made, for Kylie to stay out of the casting process. When the singer was asked who she would want to play her in a film, Minogue offered, “I’ve been told Hilary Duff resembles me. If she could manage to lose the American accent perhaps that would work.” Erm, I mean I enjoyed “Lizzie McGuire” as much as the next person, but Duff isn’t the shiniest star Hollywood has to offer. Though I will say the resemblance is there.

TCM Remembers 2010

Annual Video Memorial Features Leslie Nielsen, Claude Chabrol, Lena Horne, Dennis Hopper, Eric Rohmer, Tony Curtis, Arthur Penn, Patricia Neal & Many More

Every December, the great Turner Classic Movies—pretty much the sole reason this writer holds on to cable TV—puts together a video tribute of all the tremendous talents in film we’ve lost that year, respectfully remembering all those dearly departed greats; from iconic actors, to lesser-known writers and producers to titan directors of cinema, it’s not unlike the annual Oscar tribute. TCM Remembers 2010 has arrived and it’s another loving memorial for all those who passed on this year in film. There’s too many to mention—though let’s also give shout outs to John Forsythe, Jill Clayburgh, Peter Graves, Irvin Kershner, Dino De Laurentiis, Kathryn Grayson, and Dede Allen (editor of “The Hustler,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Dog Day Afternoon”)— and most of our favorites are mentioned above, put personally, pour out a little extra more for Penn, Rohmer, Hopper, Neal, Curtis and Chabrol—losing two greats of the French New Wave hurts.

The song featured within is “Headlights” by Sophia Hunger.

"Narnia," "Tourist" bomb at North American box office

The third movie in the shaky "Narnia" fantasy franchise and a romantic thriller starring ubiquitous celebrities Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp both fell flat at the weekend box office in North America, according to studio estimates issued Sunday.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" opened at No. 1, as expected, but with three-day sales of about $24.5 million across the United States and Canada. Industry pundits had predicted a $30 million to $40 million start for the third adaptation of C.S. Lewis' Christian-themed books.

The film got off to a much better start overseas, earning $81 million, and distributor 20th Century Fox said it was "excited" about its overall prospects.

"The Tourist," starring Jolie and Depp as a mismatched pair cavorting around Venice, came in at No. 2 with $17 million -- short of dampened forecasts in the $20 million range.

Both films were lambasted by critics, and both carried hefty price tags -- $150 million and $100 million, respectively -- requiring strong overseas sales to make them profitable.

"Narnia" marks the follow-up to "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," which opened to $55 million in 2008 on its way to a weak total of $142 million. The overseas haul was $278 million. The first film, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," ended up with $292 million in North America after a $66 million debut. Foreign fans kicked in an additional $453 million.

The latest film was distributed by News Corp-owned Fox, which took over the franchise after Walt Disney Co dropped it in the wake of the "Caspian" flop. The series is produced by family-friendly film company Walden Media, which is owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz.

"The Tourist" marks the worst start in years for its high-profile stars. Jolie's last big flop was "A Mighty Heart," which opened to $3.9 million in 2007. Depp has to go back to 2001 for a worse performance: "From Hell," with $11 million.

Jolie was last in theaters with "Salt," whose so-so domestic total of $118 million (including a $36 million opening) was boosted by foreign sales of $175 million.

Depp starred in one of the biggest movies of the year, "Alice in Wonderland," which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, two-thirds coming from overseas.

'Glee,' 'True Grit' Among AFI's Annual Top 10 List

Adding its stamp of approval to such critical favorites as The Social Network and Toy Story 3, the American Film Institute released its annual list of the 10 best movies of the year and 10 best TV programs on Sunday.

The 10 films, selected by the AFI jury, are: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, The Social Network, The Town, Toy Story 3, True Grit and Winter's Bone.

While the AFI traditionally considers only narrative features that have "significant creative and/or production elements from the United States," this year it also issued special awards to the British drama The Kings Speech and the documentary Waiting for Superman.

"As AFI Awards entered its second decade of documenting excellence across the century, it became clear from the scholars, critics and artists who come together for the American Film Institute that acknowledging outstanding work outside the traditional AFI criteria would provide greater context to our goal of recording a true history of the art form," Bob Gazzale, AFI president and CEO, said. "This year and moving forward, in addition to honoring American storytelling in the narrative format, the juries may name Special Awards and it is AFI's honor to shine a proper light on these artists and their achievements."

The AFI TV programs of the year are: The Big C, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Glee, Mad Men, Modern Family, The Pacific, Temple Grandin, 30 Rock and The Walking Dead.

The AFI will honor the creative ensembles for each of the films and TV shows at a luncheon sponsored by Hewlett-Packard on Jan. 14 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles.

Did any of your favorites make the list?

'Chuck': Ryan McPartlin on Baby Awesome's birth and babysitter preferences

"Chuck" will ring in the New Year with a birth. Ryan McPartlin, who plays Devon "Captain Awesome" Woodcomb, says he'll officially be a TV dad with Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) in late January.

"We're leading up to the baby being born and that's about where we finished shooting was the birth of the baby," McPartlin tells Zap2it. "I think that was originally going to be the end of the show [at the 13th episode], but thank God we just keep coming back. I think they actually timed the birth out though and they said it's close to the timing with the initial pregnancy announcement."

Ten of the 13 episodes originally ordered for the season have aired so far, but NBC recently announced that it was ordering a back 11 episodes.

Gwyneth Paltrow Says Nicki Minaj is a Genius!

When you think of a hardcore rap fan Gwyneth Paltrow wouldn’t typically come to mind. The Oscar winner may not wear her musical tastes on her sleeve but she’s a serious hip hop lover. Paltrow was recently out promoting her latest film Country Strong, which centers on a country superstar dealing with addiction, a failing marriage, and an up and comer trying to steal her shine. While talking about her preparation for the role she revealed how Beyonce was a huge inspiration for her and how some of her favorite albums right now include the latest from Nicki Minaj and Kanye West.

When it comes to music on her iPod Paltrow has a little bit of everything.
“I listen to everything. I probably have the most schizophranic iPod. My biggest obsession right now is the Nicki Minaj album. She’s a genius. I’m also obsessed with Kanye’s album. I really like Dierks Bentley. He has a bluegrass record that I really love.”

When it came to pulling off her best music diva impression Paltrow channeled her inner Sasha Fierce.

“I watched Beyonce a ton because I think she’s the best live performer happening right now. She has this amazing confidence and I thought to myself if I could just get a tiny bit of that self confidence then maybe I can pull off this scene at the end. You wouldn’t necessarily think that Beyonce would be the inspiration for a country star [laughs].”

You can find out if all that training paid off when Country Strong hits theaters on January 7, 2011.

Bieber Tops Google's 'Zeitgeist' 2010

It may not come as a surprise to you, but Justin Bieber is very popular. The latest evidence of this is the just-released Google "Zeitgeist" chart, which aggregated the billions of queries the search engine received in 2010 and compiled them into one list of the most-searched topics of the year. And Bieber came out on top.

JB edged out Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and the omnipresent Kim Kardashian to claim the #1 spot on Google's "Fastest Rising People" list, which took the most popular people searches of the year and compared them to data from 2009. Eminem came in at #5, followed by Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner, Megan Fox and Robert Pattinson.

Bieber was also #1 on the "Fastest Rising in Entertainment" list (ahead of Shakira, Eminem and, uh, Netflix), and landed at #3 on the general "Fastest Rising" list — bested only by Chatroulette and Apple's iPad — making him the highest actual human being on the list.

And that's using data from the entire world; if you narrow the list to include only searches done in the U.S., Bieber is #1 once again — by an even larger margin. The teen star's total searches more than doubled those of Ke$ha, who comes in at #2, followed by Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj and "Mad Men" star Christina Hendricks. Heidi Montag, Katy Perry, Kid Cudi, Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan round out the rest of the Top 10.

Which Celebrity Spinster Will End Up an Old Maid?

Winona Ryder may be making her comeback in the Oscar-buzzed "Black Swan" (playing an aging, washed-up ballerina), but she's still looking for Mr. Right.

Ryder, 39, the Gen X heartthrob for whom Johnny Depp once declared his love with a "Winona Forever" tattoo, says she's still looking for a guy who likes her just for being her.

"I remember being at this bar called Tosca in San Francisco, and I met this guy one night," she told Elle magazine. "He was really cute, and we were talking, and then, like, he just said something about how he had always had a crush on me. And I was suddenly mistrustful about why he was talking to me. I wanted to be just a normal girl flirting with a normal guy."

If you call convicted shoplifters normal ...

Ryder says that she doesn't necessarily want to be with another actor, but she might be more likely to trust someone in the same business.

Well, hopefully she met someone on the set of her other upcoming flick, "The Dilemma," because the pushing-40 actress ("knock on wood") still wants kids.

We feel your pain, Winona! Reality bites for women of a certain age. Which has us wondering ... from Ryder to Jen Aniston, let us know: Which celeb is most likely to end up an old maid?

Time for a post about someone who made the world better

Interview: Kathleen Hanna on The Raincoats and Building an Archive

There are not too many musicians who can also be considered demi-professors of academic theory, but Kathleen Hanna is one of them. Since her days in Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, she's been probably the biggest proponent, educator, and symbol of riot grrrl, a ideology that refocused feminism in a specifically insurgent but playful way, Emma Goldman filtered through Ari Up. And lately Hanna has been spending some time paying respect to other ladies and archiving that movement, donating her papers and tour fliers and set lists to NYU to establish The Riot Grrrl Collection at Fales Library. This Saturday night at MOMA, she's DJing right before a performance by The Raincoats, a legendary post-punk band of girls from England's 1970s scene. They're getting together to celebrate MOMA's exhibition Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography, a selection of works by female artists. We spoke with her about The Raincoats, The Slits, Lesley Gore, and the importance of remembering the ladies.

Cineplex, Canada's largest motion picture exhibitor, is now offering tickets for screenings of Hideaki Anno andStudio Khara's anime film Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha) throughout the country on January 20, 2011.

Funimation has confirmed with ANN that the film will be screened, but notes that "some locations and dates need to be confirmed."

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance is the second film in the four-film remake of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series. Paul Rudd is working on stardom, hilariously

Paul Rudd isn’t really acting like a nut.

He just wants one.

He’s wrestling with a $12 can of cashews in an interview suite at the Ritz-Carlton on Central Park.

“You want some?” the comic actor says, as he tugs at a stubborn pull ring.

The lid suddenly gives, almost scattering the nuts and quite nearly slashing Rudd’s hand with a jagged edge of metal.

“Whoa, that was close!” Rudd says. “You can put that in your story!”

President Obama loves Paul Rudd (Hey Obama.. get in line)

Being a movie star can get you access to some pretty exclusive places. While shooting her upcoming romantic comedy How Do You Know in Washington D.C., Reese Witherspoon and her co-star Paul Rudd managed to score a special private tour of the White House.

As the actress tells EW in this week’s cover story, what happened next was “totally surreal”: “While we were getting a tour, we got a message from the Oval Office that Obama wanted to say hi to us,” Witherspoon remembers. “We went to the Oval Office, and there was Hillary Clinton having a meeting with Joe Biden. It was insane. Then Obama came out and he turned to Paul and said, ‘I loved you in I Love You, Man.’ I grabbed Paul and I was like, ‘Are you freaking out right now?’ He’s like, ‘I’m freaking out!’ We were so tongue-tied it was ridiculous. Obama was like, ‘What are you guys doing in town?’ I started talking about the movie and I was like, ‘We’re doing a movie and…uh, I’m playing a character, who, uh…I’m working with Owen, uh…Owen…’ I could not remember Owen’s last name. And Paul goes, ‘Wilson!’ Like it was a party game.”

Dr. Gaga, Professor of Flawlessness

Lady GaGa has apparently applied for a job teaching fashion and art appreciation at a New York university.

According to an insider close to the Telephone star, the kooky singer "wants to be a college lecturer and has asked about a position at the famous Parsons School For Design.

"She wants to use her fashion sense and avant garde art obsession to launch an academic career," the source revealed to UK newspaper the Daily Star. "She’s pitched to be an artist-in-residence.

"Nothing has been finalized yet, but she’d like to teach in the fashion design program," they further revealed. "She wants to incorporate elements of music study, popular culture and media studies.

"If it goes well, she’d be interested in a more permanent arrangement. She thinks teaching would make people see she is much more than just a flamboyant pop star."
