United States of Tara / 2x01 Review

United States of Tara (Showtime): Review

Steven Spielberg’s Showtime dramedy United States of Tara with Golden Globe winner Toni Collette ratchets up the drama - not the comedy - in its Season Two premiere.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

By Rachel Ray, Washington
23 Mar 2010

Showtime’s United States of Tara, produced by Steven Spielberg, and starring Aussie actress Toni Collette - who won the Golden Globe award this year for best actress in a television series for her role as a Kansas wife and mother who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or multiple personality disorder - begins Season Two with the promise of a more serious look at a devastating psychiatric disorder.

By the end of Season One, viewers had been introduced to all of Tara’s transitioning states. “T” came on as a sassy, provocative teenager; “Buck” was Tara’s gun-loving male personality; and “Alice” was a perfectly decorous 1950s housewife. Tara, along with her three alter egos, was wife and mother to loving husband Max and teenaged children, Kate and Marshall.

'Modern Family' actors who play gay couple dish on real life

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One is Fizbo, the other fussy.

On ABC's Modern Family, Eric Stonestreet, 38, is the flashy and affectionate Lion King-loving Cameron Tucker, who moonlights as Fizbo the clown. His longtime partner, the tightly wound and Fizbo-loathing lawyer Mitchell Pritchett, is played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, 34. Together, they make up one of the most high-profile gay couples on prime time.

And like any couple, real or fictional, these two have their pet peeves with each other.

Stonestreet: "I know what Jesse's is of mine."

Ferguson: "You're Pollyanna."

Demi Moore For Harper’s Bazaar April 2010

Demi Moore graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s April 2010 issue wearing Chanel.

You may remember we saw the candids from this shoot back in December.

In her editorial she wears Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Carolina Herrera and that beautiful feathered Jason Wu dress we’ve seen on Iman.

I had to do a double take of the picture of her wearing Jason Wu, because for a split second I thought it was Victoria Beckham.

In her interview she talks about the first time she met hubby Ashton Kutcher and why she prefers being called a puma over a cougar.

You can read read all of Demi’s interview at Below are some of the highlights.

On whether she’d prefer being called a cougar or puma:
“Cougar has become so distasteful. I really hate that expression. I prefer puma it has a sweeter quality, more elegant. And then somebody said to me, ‘Pumas are only for people in their 30s.’”

On the first night she met Ashton:
“I knew it had the potential to be something special right away. It was like meeting somebody that I’ve just known where you just recognize one another. It was so disproportionate, the level of emotion we were experiencing to the time we had spent together. But when you don’t know someone, you can’t just jump and say, ‘I love you.’ ‘Nice to meet you, I love you!’ Yeah. No. We used to end our calls or emails with ‘And everything we don’t say.’ It just seemed too much, too soon.”

On Alexander McQueen:
“McQueen was a genius. I was always thrilled to wear his clothes because they were more than fashion; they were truly works of art.”

Angela Simmons Defends Hate Against JoJo And Says She’s SINGLE Dammit!

Angela Simmons is such a good sister! The second Simmons daughter spoke out on Twitter about the rumors and hate that has come against her little brother JoJo.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Tweeps were going hard on JoJo after the news of his little brother Diggy being signed to Atlantic Records, saying things ranging from “he must feel like the rap gene skipped him”, to “must feel like the rest of the Jacksons when Michael went solo.”

To defend her brother, Angela decided to speak out on her UStream channel last night about her brother being a trending topic on Twitter (#jojomustfeellike), and also took the opportunity as fans asked questions to dispel rumors.

When asked about how she felt about people laughing at JoJo not being signed but his little brother Diggy getting a deal, Angie said:
“People need to stop trying to create a competition between my siblings. Trust me if one of us make it we are all happy. Haters out there have nothing better to do with their life than talk about someone else’s, instead criticizing our life, why don’t you try to get your own.”
She also answered questions about who she is dating…

Last Call : Interactive Horror Movie

In This Horror Movie, the Call Comes From Inside the Theater

What's more terrifying than a call coming from inside the house? The call coming from inside the theater. That's the thought behind Last Call, an interactive horror film in which the main character calls a random audience member for help.

Even though they know their efforts are useless, moviegoers have long tried to help the ill-fated protagonists of horror movies. "Run!" "Hide!" "Don't go down there!" In Last Call, a new German movie, the characters are finally willing to listen.

Audience members supply their cell numbers at the beginning of the screening and, at one point in the movie, one phone is selected to receive a call from the character on screen. Voice recognition software listens for the moviegoer's commands and the story unfolds based on their instructions. From the looks of things it seems like it's a "left" or "right," "stay" or "flee" type of thing, so your exhortations for the main character to take off her clothes will likely go unfulfilled.

13th Street, the company that developed the film, bills it as the "first interactive horror movie." It'll probably end up making things goofier than spookier, I imagine, but they're right about one thing: putting the character's fate in the audience's control is a scary prospect. Janine Lindemulder Feels Sorry for Sandra Bullock: IN TOUCH Exclusive

In Touch Exclusive Interview:
Jesse cheated with more women

“He’s a chronic cheater,” Jesse’s ex-wife Janine Lindemulder claims exclusively to In Touch. “I feel sorry for Sandra because she was so in love with Jesse that she was blind and gullible.”

Last week, In Touch Weekly was the first to reveal the shocking news that Sandra Bullock’s husband Jesse James cheated on her with tattoo model Michelle “Bombshell” McGee. While Sandra copes with that information, even more astounding details have emerged about the man she once believed was her soulmate.

In an exclusive interview with In Touch, Jesse’s ex-wife Janine Lindemulder describes, in her opinion, an immature, selfish man who has never been faithful to any woman he’s been with — including Sandra. “He’s a chronic cheater,” Janine claims to In Touch. “I feel sorry for Sandra because she was so in love with Jesse that she was blind and gullible. She once said, ‘I finally have a man who has my back.’ And all I could think was, ‘No. You have this man who does it behind your back.’”

According to the former porn star, she first learned Jesse — who had not commented by press time — was unfaithful to her just weeks into their marriage, when he accidentally sent her a text message intended for a lover. And though Janine tried to ignore his bad behavior at first, it continued throughout the marriage — and then after, including the time when he was dating Sandra. “I remember at one point, about six months after he started dating Sandra, when he asked me to come by the shop,” she recalls. “I told him, ‘No way.’ Later, he texted me, ‘Thank God you didn’t come by, because we would have been bad.’” In fact, she and Jesse were “bad” on one occasion while he was dating Sandra, when he cajoled her into having phone sex with him. “His famous line was, ‘Tell me something nice,’” Janine recalls. “He would say he’d had a rough day and wanted you to tell him something nice… It was hard to say no to the guy.”

Janine says she was “shocked” to hear Jesse and Sandra, 45, had gotten married in July 2005 — but that was nothing compared to the call she received from him at her Oregon home, just two weeks after he and Sandra had said their vows. “He said, ‘I want to come up to Oregon. I think I made a huge mistake.’”

Janine and Jesse separated in May 2003 after she punched him and "bludgeoned him in the back of the head with a flowerpot", according to the October 2003 divorce petition.

Jesse James Posted Online Ads for "Hot, Tattooed Biker Chicks with Big Boobs"

Exclusive: Sources: Michelle McGee Isn't Jesse James' First Mistress

Sandra Bullock's husband Jesse James cheated on her with other women besides tattoo model Michelle McGee, multiple sources tell the new Us Weekly (on newsstands now).

"This is just the first person who has gone public," one source tells Us Weekly. Adds another, "This is not an isolated incident. When Sandra is away, he gets bored."

In fact, James' infidelity has been an open secret among employees at his West Coast Choppers bike shop in Long Beach, Calif.

"Everybody knew," one source tells Us Weekly.

James, 40, would regularly post Internet ads looking for "hot, tattooed biker chicks with big boobs," says a source.

Adds another, "He sees their photos, answers the ads and invites the girls to his office."

How could Bullock, 45, be in the dark about her husband of nearly five years?

"He is a whole other person when they're together," says a source.

Adds an insider, "She was completely duped."

American Idol Season 9 Top 11 - Worst Episode Ever?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

'American Idol' 9's Top 11 is bound to go down in 'Idol' history as one of the worst nights of 'Idol' performances EVER -- from the lame and generic song choices to the trainwreck performances to the teenaged mentor, Miley Cyrus, speed-talking as she offered up super-obvious performance tips to the kids.

The kids who make the cut this week get to go on the financially lucrative Idol summer tour. It was the worst night possible to have a bad performance.

The week got off to a strange start when the previously announced theme, "Teen Idols," was mysteriously changed to the generic "Billboard #1 Hits" over the weekend. Next, 'Idol' fans were shocked to find out that the kids' mentor this week was a teenager -- Miley Cyrus.

Tiger Woods hooked up with LeAnn Rimes

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Us Weekly is claiming that serial-cheater Tiger Woods once dated serial-cheater LeAnn Rimes. Wait a minute, she's not a stripper! *so confused* From Us:
Woods, now 34, and Rimes, 27, "went out a few times" before she wed soon-to-be ex-husband Dean Sheremet in 2002, says a source.

"They hooked up and everything," the source tells Us. "Tiger was really into her. He likes those blondes!"

Alas, Rimes' dad protested because he thought his teen daughter was too young to date the famed golfer, seven years her senior. "Then her dad almost had a heart attack," the source adds. "And he made her stop seeing Tiger."
In Mr. Rimes' defense, "age difference" sounds way better than "Oh my god, I can't believe my daughter is dating a black guy -- when did I mess up?" And in Tiger's defense, he's not exactly Lexington Steele. He's about the whitest black dude there is. LeAnn's dad needs to get in his hot tub time machine and leave 1955 Mississippi.

TV Ratings Tuesday

Against a CBS repeat line up, American Idol dominated the ratings even more completely than last Tuesday, and both ABC’s Lost and NBC’s Parenthood gained vs. last week.

American Idol was up 2% from last Tuesday (and 1% from the comparable show last season) to a night dominating 8.3 adults 18-49 rating, more than the other four English language networks combined on the night. For Idol watchers keeping track at home, the show is down just 5% in adults 18-49 ratings on a season to date basis.

ABC’s Lost was up a tenth of a point to a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating vs. last week, but since it overran 6 minutes into the 10pm hour, the final ratings will be likely revising that number upwards. On the flipside, the special V clip show’s 1.9 rating will likely be revised downwards.

NBC seemed to be the biggest beneficiary of the CBS repeat night, as Biggest Loser was up 7% to a 3.0 rating and Parenthood was up a whopping 17% to a 2.7 rating.

The lack of new episodes on CBS didn’t help the CW at all, as 90210 tumbled 22% to a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating and Melrose Place fell a tenth of a point to a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating.

Noel Gallagher: 'I'll never recover from Toronto Oasis gig assault'

Guitarist gives witness statement in assault case

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Noel Gallagher has delivered a witness statement to a Toronto court saying that he has been told he will "never really recover" from the injuries he received in the city in September 2008.

The guitarist was attacked by crowd member Daniel Sullivan at the V Festival in the Canadian city while performing with Oasis there. He suffered three cracked ribs.

Now according to The Sun, Gallagher's witness statement has been read out in court in the country's capital after Sullivan plead guilty to the charge of assault.

"I would describe the impact and shock as feeling as if I had been hit by a bus," Gallagher's statement read. "I ended up in a heap. I have been told that I will never really recover from the damage, and still feel painful twinges."

The statement continued, "The emotional impact it had was essentially coping with the pressure to perform so as not to let the band down. For a considerable period I was operating at 50 per cent of my capabilities."

Oasis had to cancel a series of gigs because of the injuries. Sullivan is set to be sentenced next month.

Puck from The Real World: San Francisco Badly Injured in Car Accident.

Puck from "The Real World: San Francisco" is hospitalized in San Diego following a terrifying car wreck that left the reality star and his 8-year-old son seriously injured ... this according to sources close to the family.

We're told Puck was driving down Route 79 on Friday to go on a father-son fishing trip, when he swerved to avoid a deer and lost control of his car.

The car rolled down an embankment and landed upside down in a creek. Sources tell us Puck -- real name David Rainey -- was trapped, but he managed to free his son, who flagged down some help.

The two were transported to nearby hospitals where doctors discovered Puck had broken bones in both feet, his right hand, his neck ... and fractured his sternum and clavicle.

We're told his son had bruised several internal organs in the wreck -- he also suffered major damage to his liver.

Puck's son has since been released from the hospital -- but Puck is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another week.

I hope Puck and little Bogart recover quickly!

Real Housewife Kim Zolciak Finally Admits She's Dating a Woman

Addressing earlier rumors of a lesbian relationship, "Real Housewives of Atlanta" hot mess Kim Zolciak has admitted that she is dating a woman, reports

"I don't believe love has a gender," the wig-line-designer-turned-singer told Life & Style magazine. "But I don't want to define gay, bisexual or straight. I just think it's too much for me — a woman doesn't define me, nor does a man."

Zolciak, who has kept fans guessing for two seasons as to the identity of her anonymous boyfriend referred to only as "Big Poppa," told the mag that she and DJ Tracy Young grew close while working on a remix to her single "Tardy For the Party."

"There were sparks, but [physically] it was a gradual situation," she says. "Tracy made the first move. Our first kiss was passionate and exciting."

Zolciak took to Twitter earlier today to post, "I feel like the biggest weight is off my shoulders, Publicity stunt my a** this is MY life."

Top Gear Australia is Going To Happen Again. OH LORD

Top Gear Australia coming back

With the original Top Gear being one of its ratings winners when it was launched back in February, Nine is planning to cash in on its success. A spokesperson for Nine told media publication Campaign Brief, “We’re confident 2010 will be our strongest ratings year in the last decade.”

Six episodes are said to be planned, but as yet no details have been released on who the hosts will be, nor have any dates been set. Recent speculation even saw Shane Warne’s name rise to the surface.

So, with six episodes to win the public over, what does Nine have to do with Top Gear Australia to make it a success?

Stop is AUSTRALIA! The aussie remake was shit and the hosts were all pussies and it was all dull and full of secondhand embarrassment.
Just let Jeremy, James, and Richard do Top Gear.

Dear Victoria Beckham,

Yesterday I said that Cheryl Cole was the perfect substitute to your street style.

After seeing how fabulous you looked a London’s Heathrow airport yesterday I feel I should take that statement back and put it in the bin where it belongs.

Many (including me) have complained that you don’t vary your style often enough, but this easy breezy laid back look was as refreshing as lemonade on a hot summers day.

I struggling to remember the last time I saw you in pants, but I will be going to Zara this lunchtime to find a pair just like yours.

Stella McCartney maybe mad that you are sporting her casual chic style, but I happy that you’re not pictured wearing yet another LBD.

NPR: Ten Things I Read In Jennifer Love Hewitt's Book That Are Not Hallucinations

Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, who became famous on the teen drama Party Of Five in the late 1990s, made a lot of people really angry by playing Audrey Hepburn in a TV movie, made many terrible movies, and then found her way to The Ghost Whisperer, has written a book.

Called The Day I Shot Cupid, it is subtitled, "Hello, My Name Is Jennifer Love Hewitt, And I'm A Love-aholic." Yes, this means that her name is on the cover of the book twice. As you can see from the cover, this book is about very serious advice for women about how to be happy. Despite the fact that I feel like I am walking right into a trap set by a publisher who expects this book to sell with an Irony Multiplier of about 8.5, I simply cannot help myself. Robert Culp Has Died - Star of I Spy and Everybody Loves Raymond

Actor Robert Culp, best known for his role as an international tennis star and globe-trotting secret agent in the hit 1960s television series "I Spy," died Wednesday morning after a fall at his Hollywood home, authorities said.

The 79-year-old actor was rushed to Queen of Angels hospital shortly after 11 a.m. after hitting his head while taking a walk outside his home in the 1800 block of El Cerrito Place, said LAPD Lt. Bob Binder. He was found by a jogger who called 911, and paramedics, patrol officers and detectives responded to the scene.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. A preliminary investigation found "that his death is accidental and there appears to be no sign of foul play," Binder said. An autopsy by the Los Angeles County Coroner's office is pending.

Culp broke into Hollywood in the late 1950s but catapulted to fame playing Kelly Robinson in the hourlong 1965-68 espionage series "I Spy," which was shot in exotic locales around the world.

Besides its popularity, the show also broke the color barrier for dramatic television series as the first noncomedy series to star an African American actor, Bill Cosby.

Off screen, Culp has been active in civic causes, most recently in his efforts to oppose construction of an elephant exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo.

In 2007, the actor joined with real estate agent Aaron Leider in filing a lawsuit against zoo director John Lewis and the city to stop construction of a $42-million elephant exhibit and bar the zoo from keeping elephants there, accusing authorities at the facility of withholding medical care from the animals and keeping them cramped in small places.

Last year, after temporarily halting construction on the elephant exhibit amid a fierce debate, the City Council voted to go ahead with the project as planned.

A full obituary is coming shortly from The Times.

Jesse James Sexually Harassed Bike Shop Staff

Jesse James Sexually Harassed Bike Shop Staff

Jesse James settled a sexual harassment lawsuit out of court with a West Coast shopper employee who apparently blew him while he was still with Sandra Bullock in 2007. TMZ reports:

The woman kept several suggestive emails from Jesse. In one email in 2007, which is included in the file, Jesse wrote to the woman, "Need anything before I split?"  She responded, "Some Tums." Jesse replied, "I have some special fluid that you can drink and it makes it all better ...."

And, she claims after an oral encounter with Jesse, she kept a telltale Clintonesque T-shirt. The woman quit in 2007 and hired Gloria Allred's law firm to represent her. No lawsuit was ever filed, but on September 27, 2007, the matter settled for $725,000.  In the settlement docs, Jesse neither admitted nor denied the allegations.

So let me get this straight: This chick basically agreed to give Jesse James head only to turn around and sue him for 700 grand, but he's the bad gu- Oh, right, Sandra Bullock. Wow, she is easy to forget.

Liam Neeson to play Lyndon Johnson in Lee Daniels' new movie

On this day 45 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. led a group of civil rights protesters to the City of St. Jude, a Roman Catholic school on the outskirts of Montgomery, Alabama. The historic march, which started days earlier in the city of Selma, would culminate the next day at the State Capitol Building in Montgomery.

For his next project, "Precious" director Lee Daniels will tell the story of this culminating moment for the American civil rights movement in "Selma." He told MTV in an exclusive interview yesterday that the cast is firming up. The key roles of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and Ralph Abernathy are set. Alabama Governor George Wallace remains unconfirmed, but an offer is out and a deal is waiting to be finalized.

"Liam Neeson's playing Johnson," Daniels told us. The former U.S. president, who was sworn into office after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, wasn't present for the march of course, but he was an instrumental figure in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the National Voting Rights Act of 1965.

As for Ralph Abernathy, who worked closely with King Jr. in planning the Selma marches -- there were three, though only the last one made it to Montgomery -- Daniels is particularly pleased with that casting. "We have Cedric the Entertainer, who is going to be [Ralph] Abernathy. He is a really good choice, so we're excited about that."

For awhile it was speculated that Robert De Niro might be up for the Wallace role. In yesterday's interview, Daniels reiterated his previous comments to us that he'd like to work with the veteran actor, but it sounds the Wallace role might not be that collaboration.

Neeson and Cedric join an already star-studded cast. Hugh Jackman will play racist Selma sheriff Jim Clark, a prominent figure within the story. The King Jr. role belongs to "The Last King of Scotland" supporting star David Oyelowo, as announced last week. Lenny Kravitz also told MTV recently that he'll take the role of civil rights figure Andrew Young. Still to be cast among the main players are Wallace and Wilson Baker, the Selma sheriff who replaced Clark in 1966.

Sudanese Supermodel Alek Wek Graces the Cover of South Africa Elle's 14th Birthday Issue

The question no one wants to answer (Honestly)

The April issue of South African fashion publication, ELLE, toasts its 14th birthday with an exclusive cover and interview with international Sudanese supermodel, Alek Wek.  Shot in South Africa by photographer Oliviero Toscani Alek gives a personal account of how she escaped from dodging bullets in Sudan to conquering New York and catwalks around the world.

Even more interestingly, the April issue also features a story flagged on its cover- an honest look at the question: 'do black covers sell?' Though the era of apartheid ended in 1994, South Africa continues to battle intense racism and resentment from the black community.

“This outfit makes a strong statement for style democracy and Wek’s vibrant smile captures the optimism and high spirits thatELLE magazine epitomises going forward into its second seven-year South African cycle,” says ELLE Editor Jackie Burger of the cover.

Amy Poehler takes a break with Archie

Amy Poehler takes a break from filming new episodes of Parks and Recreation and spends some quality time with her son Archibald “Archie” Arnett on Tuesday (March 23) in Van Nuys, Calif.

The 38-year-old comedienne is back on the set after it was recently announced that she and Arrested Development’s Will Arnett will be expecting a second child.

“It will not affect the show,” a source told E! Online. “They will take a short break and then resume production.”

Jamie Oliver's plan for a healthier America shot down by Letterman

Jamie Oliver's attempt to revolutionise America's unhealthy eating habits hit yet another stumbling block yesterday when his plan was dismissed by David Letterman. In a move away from his talkshow's usual format, the TV host delivered an extraordinary five-minute lecture at the start saying why Oliver was doomed to failure. While Letterman praised Oliver's idea, he said it wouldn't work in a country full of fast food chains and convenience food.

Justin Bieber's Manager Charged in Twitter Bust

WILLISTON PARK, N.Y. (WPIX) - Justin Bieber's manager turned himself in to Nassau County police Wednesday, to face misdemeanor charges in what his lawyer calls a " Twitter arrest."

The charges against Scott "Scooter" Braun stem from a November event at Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island. Bieber was due at the mall to sign copies of his CD, but chaos later ensued after nearly 5.000 fans showed up -- far more than mall security had expected.

After receiving 911 calls from people in the mall concerned about being trampled, Nassau County police decided to cancel the event. Investigators say they told James Roppo, an executive with Def Jam Records, to call it off.

AC fans rejoice! He let his boyfriend out of his closet.

Usually trapped behind a public veil of un-acknowledgment and elephants in rooms, Anderson Cooper's boyfriend Benjamin Maisani made his big debut at Vanity Fair's Oscar party. But miraculously, his name managed to escape the photo agency's captions.

The Getty-owned WireImage agency took this picture of Cooper, the Seinfelds, and the back of what appears to be Maisani's head in what is the closest thing to visual confirmation of the pair attending together. The arrival of the CNN newsman and the East Village gay bar owner together is a milestone because the party was a "very public event," notes Brian Moylan. Which is true, in a sense: All eyes are on the party, and there's a massive photo dump going on in real-time as photographers snap away at guest arrivals and such, uploading pictures to WireImage's servers before offloading them to and other high bidders.

Is it just me or does Anderson really look terrified in the second pic? Maybe he’s just anxious.

Never-seen-before pictures of Marilyn Monroe on set of Some Like It Hot

An amazing set of 11 never-before-seen pictures of Hollywood sex bomb Marilyn Monroe relaxing on the set of her classic comedy film Some Like It Hot have been revealed.
The shots are unusual because they are in colour, whereas the film was black and white.

The photographs show Marilyn chatting on set with co-star Tony Curtis in 1959 - three years before her death.

The sale is being organised at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on June 25 this year by U.S. specialist Julien's Auctions.

Noah Baumbach to Direct The Emperor’s Children with Keira Knightley, Eric Bana and Richard Gere

Noah Baumbach ("Greenberg") has signed on to direct "The Emperor's Children" for Imagine Entertainment, sliding into the position that had previously been held by Ron Howard, who will now produce with partner Brian Grazer.

Keira Knightley, Eric Bana and Richard Gere are attached to the film, which is currently looking for outside financiers. The dramedy is eyeing a summer start date.

Gere would likely take a supporting role.

Knightley would likely play Marina Thwaite, the daughter of a social activist and journalist who is struggling to finish her first book, titled The Emperor’s Children Have No Clothes, while Bana is most suited for Ludovic, an ambitious Aussie who woos Marina to get himself invited into Manhattan’s high society.

Baumbach adapts from Claire Messud's 2006 best-selling novel about a trio of Brown University graduates who are approaching their 30s with trepidation as they struggle to realize the lofty expectations held for their personal and professional lives. The novel was set in New York in the months leading up to and following 9/11.

The material seems like a strong fit for the "Kicking and Screaming" filmmaker.

Back in July 2007, Variety reported that Howard would direct the feature with Baumbach writing the screenplay, but Howard has since moved on to directing Universal's untitled comedy about infidelity starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, which starts shooting in six weeks.

Gere could use a hit after his last two films, "Amelia" and "Brooklyn's Finest," failed to make a dent at the box office, though their poor performances were hardly his fault considering they were driven by stars Hilary Swank, and Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle, respectively.

Baumbach, the Oscar-nominated writer of "The Squid and the Whale," has also adapted Curtis Sittenfeld's "Prep" for Paramount.

David Mamet's Master Class Memo to the Writers of The Unit

New! With tags!

CBS’s drama The Unit, about the lives of the highly trained members of a top-secret military division, was canceled last year, but a memo to its writing staff from its executive producer David Mamet has just surfaced online. (The source appears to be the online writing collective Ink Canada.) If you think you know where this is heading, you might be wrong:

Besides the fact that it’s written in all-caps, there’s nothing particularly ranty, pejorative or potty-mouthed about it. Rather, Mamet lays down an extremely sensible case for what makes good television, imploring them to avoid expository writing for what he characterizes as authentic “drama.” Along the way, he refers repeatedly to the “blue-suited penguins” (probably the copious-note-givers at the network), while passing along some very useful advice (“any time two characters are talking about a third, the scene is a crock of shit”) and helpful writing exercises (“pretend the characters can’t speak and write a silent movie”). Screenwriters, take note: You may think you knew this already, but there’s nothing like Mamet for a good kick-in-the-ass reminder.

Iggy Pop retires his signature move

New, with tags!

While most people in their early sixties are retiring from the practice of medicine or from their elevator-repair jobs, punk-rock legend Iggy Pop is officially retiring from stage-diving.

The 62-year-old Stooges frontman took a hard dive onto the floor of New York’s Carnegie Hall on February 26 that would land most porous-boned seniors a trip to the geriatric ward and a hip replacement. Alas, partying has been good for the ol’ Pop, but he’s not the resilient young man the world used to know as “the Iguana”.

In an interview with WENN, the aging godfather of punk said he would “make a mental note that Carnegie Hall would be a good place for my last stage dive.”

Iggy and the Stooges will be touring Europe from April 9 until early November this year, but ticketholders can expect a dive-free show.

Lady Gaga First Artist with One Billion Online Video Views

Video analytics company Visible Measures — the one we work with to put out our monthly top 10 webisodes chart — curates a list of video called the “100 Million Club.”

It includes all the web videos that have exceeded 100 million views. Lady Gaga has long been a staple of the chart, but now she’s essentially in a club all her own: She’s the first franchise to reach one billion views.

Gaga’s music videos hold three spots in the 65-video 100 Million Club — one for “Poker Face” (374,606,128), one for “Just Dance” (272,941,674) and one for “Bad Romance” (360,020,327). Add them up and you get just over one billion views. She won’t occupy the club alone for long, though; the Twilight saga is close behind with 980 million and Soulja Boy is at 860 million.

Gaga is primarily a hit on Vevo and YouTube; 25% of Vevo’s visitors only have eyes for her. The pop star has attracted Internet attention elsewhere, too. A Facebook group of more than 100,000 people initiated National Lady Gaga Day about a month ago, and her latest Internet hit is her “Telephone” music video with Beyoncé.

The point is, you can’t escape Gaga on the Internet. She’s everywhere right now. We welcome speculation as to exactly why the web loves her so, so let us know in the comments if you have any ideas.

Congrats! Epic fail though at Soulja Boy and Twilight

Benjamin Bratt Q+A at Cal State Northridge

I'm a television production major at Cal State Northridge and sometimes we get movie screenings with the opportunity to have a q+a with the director and sometimes a star of the film. Yesterday my school had a screening of Benjamin Bratt's movie La Mission and a q+a afterward with Benjamin Bratt, Donald Petrie (director of Miss Congeniality) and the producer for La Mission.

He mostly talked about pre-production, how they had to film around the busy Mission district in San Francisco and how a lot of the actors in the movie (the extras and such) were plucked straight off the streets in San Francisco. He also talked about how the movie was received in the film festival circuit and about what Chicano culture means to him.

What's up with Brad Pitt's gnarly-looking facial fuzz?

"It's boredom. No other reason than that," the actor, 46, tells Britain's Sun newspaper.

On Monday, a solo Pitt, 46, was in London to promote the action-thriller "Kick-Ass" (out April 14), which he helped produce for director Matthew Vaughn, who is married to pregnant supermodel Claudia Schiffer.

Pitt has since returned to Venice, where his self-described "soul mate" Angelina Jolie is shooting "The Tourist" with Johnny Depp.

Asked how his time has been there, he told "Lovely!" On Tuesday, Pitt and Jolie, 34, showed off a rare glimpse of their 20-month-old twins Vivienne and Knox while relaxing on the private balcony of the 15th century palazzo they're renting.

Jpop Idol Akanishi Jin to have solo concerts in LA, while the rest of his group tours w/o him

Johnny's Jimusho made two announcements on Wednesday regarding popular boy band KAT-TUN. First, the group will be doing an Asia tour this year. Second, member Jin Akanishi (25) will not be participating in the tour, and will instead be preparing for a set of solo concerts in Los Angeles.

KAT-TUN's tour is scheduled to run from May to August. Most of the concerts will be in Japan, but a few of them will be held overseas. They will perform in Bangkok on July 31, in Seoul on August 6-7, and in Taipei on August 27-28. Other sources say that a Hawaii concert is also being considered.

However, Akanishi is expected to leave for Los Angeles in May to prepare for three concerts on June 19-20. These will be the first solo performances in the U.S. by a Johnny's artist.

Make Room For More Mean Girl Action On Season Two Of 'The City'

A couple of interesting things to note about the new trailer for Season Two of "The City" (premiering April 27 at 10:30/9:30c):

1) Olivia Palermo still has a job at Elle. (Damn, who she got lookin' out for her in HR?) Joe Zee's even come up with a brilliant idea to make 'Liv the face of How long ya think till Erin Kaplan stabs her own eye with a Louboutin?

2) Whitney's confrontation skills greatly improved over the break. She's even learned how to call someone a "bitch." (To their face!)

3) Kelly Cutrone is still running the s**t out of People's Rev and getting Whit's back no matter where (or how far) she wanders. How do WE get hooked up with a fairy godmother like Kel? (There may or may not be an offer on the table for free promotion and a lightly used 'World's Best Boss' coffee mug in exchange for a friend request on Facebook.)

Did DUI Do In Real World's Puck? Cops Arrest Him at Hospital

In response to this post from earlier:

Puck's bad boy act didn't end with his eviction from MTV's Real World.

The former reality-TV star otherwise known as David Rainey was arrested in his hospital room on suspicion of DUI following a solo car crash last Friday that left him and his 8-year-old son, Bogart, injured.

"There's evidence that alcohol was involved," Officer Brian Pennings of the California Highway Patrol confirmed to E! News. "He's been arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He'll be facing charges of DUI, child endangerment and driving without a license. Due to his medical condition he remains in the hospital."

Pennings said investigators will continue to probe the accident before submitting the case to the district attorney; how long that will take though will depend on Rainey's recovery.

"He has some pretty severe injuries, so we don’t know how long he is going to have to stay in the hospital," added the officer.

Puck's manager said he "cannot confirm or comment" whether the Real World: San Francisco villain had been boozing the night of the wreck.

But the rep did say Puck needed surgery on his neck and throat and was unable to talk at this point.

According to authorities, Puck was driving along Route 79 to San Diego for a father-son fishing trip when he lost control of his car, which skidded off an embankment and rolled over.

"He was trapped inside the vehicle," said Pennings. "His 8-year-old son was able to self-extricate himself, went up to the top of the embankment they rolled down and flagged down a passerby for help. His son was restrained and only sustained minor injuries."

While Puck remains laid up in the hospital, Bogart has since been released and is now back home with Rainey's wife, Betty.

Lady Gaga: Why I Passed Out Three Times

Days after crumpling to the floor during a New Zealand concert, Lady Gaga explained her alarming performance.

"I was so jet lagged," she told the Australian radio show Kyle and Jackie O on Friday. "I passed out about three times on stage that night but I got myself to the floor. I'd rather die on stage than walk off because I was going to pass out."

This isn't the first time that Gaga's whirlwind rise to superstardom has taken its toll. Back in January, she was forced to cancel several shows, citing exhaustion.

One source fears that the pop star is suffering from the stress of her staggering fame. "She's on the verge of tipping," says the source. "She's only human."

Still, the singer insisted on the radio show that she's feeling "completely rejuvenated and excited."

Stupid Bitch Accusing Janet Of Having Butt Implants

Janet Jackson Wears Butt Pads On Leno Show

Pop legend Janet Jackson appeared on the Jay Leno Show last night and her shamelessly enhanced butt cheeks were very noticeable. Janet deliberately chose a two-pice skirt set one size too small to give definition and lift to her enhanced buttocks. If Janet were to perform no one would notice how bad she sounded because all eyes were on her false pads.

Butt pads, or artificial butt enhancement garments, is all the rage among female celebrities who were not blessed genetically with junk in their trunks. Butt pads have become as common place in a woman’s wardrobe as her underwear. I guess Janet figures if Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian and Lola Luv can gain fame and attention for their artificially inflated buttocks, then why can’t she?

Kevin Smith Wants To Make Critics Pay To Review His Movies, Critics Tell Him To Smoke Less Pot

Kevin Smith may be remembered at the end of the day not as a gifted screenwriter and not-so-great director and occasional comic relief player but as the guy who pioneered self-marketing on the internet. He was an early adopter, with and other sites; his Twitter account @ThatKevinSmith logs over 1 million followers. He loves hanging out on twitter, engaging directly with his fans. And they loyally show up to his movies. But there are only so many of them.

Smith, whose corpulence led to a much retweeted encounter with Southwest Airlines, is not a happy camper right now. I skipped his latest movie Cop Out, because what I like best about Smith’s indie movies, from Clerks and Chasing Amy to Dogma and the unfortunately-titled Zack and Miri Make a Porno, are his scripts. I’m often disappointed by their rough execution—but Smith always makes me laugh. So why set himself up by directing a movie written to formula by someone else? In order to prove that he could—and break out of the Kevin Smith fan ghetto. (Another well-compensated Smith sideline is doing scatologically hilarious—and oft-YouTubed—talks on the lecture circuit.)

'Lost' exclusive! This week's Carlton and Damon podcast and the series finale title!

Lost fans were treated to an essential hour of entertainment and story on Tuesday with “Ab Aeterno,” certainly the best episode so far this season and already considered by some as one of the best Lost episodes ever.

Amid the giddy, there is some soberness, too: we’re now halfway through the final season. Only nine more hours left, then Lost goes away. In fact, as we speak, Team Lost is hard at work making the two-hour series finale scheduled for May 23. Said finale happens to have a title, and if you wish to know what it could be, listen to the newest official Lost podcast hosted by exec producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, which you’ll find here exclusively for the next day. (Big thanks to Lost prodcast producer Kris White!)

I’d preview the contents and give you a harder sell, but I haven’t listened to it, it’s so hot off the presses. And I thought you’d appreciate it if I got it out to you ASAP instead of hogging it all to myself. Appreciate me! Without further ado: Listen!

Brad Bird Might Direct Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 4

Although we'd been hoping he would eventually get a greenlight to direct his live-action earthquake movie 1906, apparently The Incredibles and Ratatouille director might take on another live-action mission first. Heat Vision is reporting that former Pixar director Brad Bird is now one of a few "contenders" to direct Mission: Impossible 4 being produced by J.J. Abrams and set to star Tom Cruise for his fourth time. The trade site obviously isn't confirming that he's the one who has the job, mentioning that they've been meeting with others like Ruben Fleischer and Edgar Wright, but it's possible Bird may end up directing this sequel.

Meet the new action heroes: Lincoln, Da Vinci, Dickens and Queen Victoria

Forget Indiana Jones. If you're making a period-piece adventure these days, you might want to consider putting the whip, wooden stake or pistol in the hand of a long-gone world leader or esteemed author.

It may sound a bit strange, but that's the message coming back from pop culture at the moment. Consider the fact that, at bookstores right now, Abe Lincoln and Queen Victoria
are each taking on dark supernatural threats and that Hollywood has plans to turn Charles Dickens, H.P. Lovecraft and Leonardo da Vinci into on-screen action heroes.

The new novel "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" by Seth Grahame-Smith (who also brought the world "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies") is getting enthusiastic reviews, as is "Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter," which Los Angeles Times book reviewer Nick Owchar called "wildly entertaining."

Hollywood, meanwhile, is getting into the history-book mindset with a flurry of projects.

Ron Howard, who knows his way around spooky libraries and crypts after "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels & Demons," has plans to adapt "The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft," the Image Comics series that pits the author against some of the same sort of ancient beasties that filled his novels.

Just announced, meanwhile, is "Leonardo da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever," a Warner Bros. and Prime Universe project that would pit Italian artist and thinker Leonardo against "biblical demons in a story involving secret codes, lost civilizations, hidden fortresses and fallen angels," as it was summed up at the Heat Vision blog, which first reported the venture. (Who might star in it? That was the playful question asked by Patrick Goldstein of the Big Picture, who is not impressed with idea of the "Mona Lisa"
painter as action hero.)

But wait, there's more. Guillermo del Toro also has plans to adapt the 2008 novel "Drood," which puts Dickens at the center of an occult mystery in 1860s London. Don't expect to see that one soon, though, since the "Pan's Labyrinth" director has his two-film adaptation of "The Hobbit" on his agenda first.

There may be one upside to this scramble to find a future blockbuster in the pages of the past -- think of all the Hollywood agents who now have to go get themselves a library card.

the biebz is going to #1

Leave it to Bieber.

Island/IDJ teen phenom Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0, the 10-track follow-up to his still Top 10 album, will top next week’s HITS Album Sales chart with between 225-250k, which is over 100k more than his debut last November, now over 1 million.

That’s based on one-day sales reports from those retailers who have completed perfect NCAA brackets through two rounds.

The industry at large hopes the album—which is selling from between $6.98 at Amazon, $6.99 at Target and $9.99 at iTunes, including some digital bells and whistles—will be the start of a trend where artists release less tracks at more frequent intervals.

J/RMG’s Monica is Still Standing, with the proof in projected sales of 165-190k for her new album, fueled by the hit Rhythm single, “Everything to Me.”

Capitol/EMI’s Now 33 will debut with an impressive 135-140k, which represents a whopping 35% increase over Now 32’s first week, and maybe signs the long-running franchise is getting an improbable second wind in the download era. Or not as the case may be.

Merge’s She and Him, the pairing of singer-songwriter M. Ward and indie film heartthrob Zooey Deschanel, is picking up steam at Amazon, with a total n ow climbing between 40-50k, same range as Broken Bells.

German heavy metal gods The Scorpions’ announced final album, Sting in the Tail, will bow with 18-22k for UMe.

The market was down 7% vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year and still down 8% year to date. You may now return to getting tickled by not-so-honorable Congressman Eric Massa.

In Touch Exclusive: Christina goes back to the future!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Christina Aguilera just released the devil-may-care artwork for her new single “Not Myself Tonight” — and In Touch has the lowdown on her new sound! On her 2006 album Back to Basics, the singer went retro with a sound that referenced music from the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s, but on her new album, she’s going for a sonic landscape that’s ahead of its time.

“I’m so excited — I’ve had an idea for a futuristic feel for many years now,” Christina tells In Touch. “It's always been in the back of my mind to do a more futuristic sound. I was inspired by artists that I am collaborating with on the album. Folks like Sia, Ladytron and Goldfrapp.” Another inspiration for her new music? Her 2-year-old son, Max!

“I felt like it couldn't been a better time or place for me personally, also as a new mom,” says the singer, who’s been married to Jordan Bratman since November 2005. “Max has so much of both of us. One day, everyone says he looks just like Jord, and the next, like me. He is walking and talking, and a bundle of joy!”

Jesse James' ex-wife does not want Jesse's marital problems to get in the way of another special relationship -- the one her daughter shares with Sandra Bullock.

Janine James -- the mother of Jesse's daughter Sunny -- tells TMZ, "If Sandra decides to keep a relationship going with our daughter Sunny, I would in no way stop that."

She added, "Sunny loves Sandy and vice versa. She's welcome to be a part of every aspect of Sunny's life."

Despite the fact that Sandra ripped Janine in a legal move to obtain custody of Sunny last year, Janine seems to be grateful for everything Bullock did saying, "She has taken care of our daughter as if she was her own ... she sacrificed much ... and I will forever be indebted to her for that."

The Twilight beauty was house hunting in Beverly Hills on Tuesday when she walked up to a car with keys in hand, got inside, before suddenly realizing -- it wasn?t her car!

Hey, it could happen to anyone! After all, the Mini Cooper was the exact same make and color as hers.

But our favorite part of the story is that the Mini Cooper actually belonged to a paparazzi who was following her!

Stewart had a quick laugh at her own gaffe and found her actual vehicle -- call it the Bella-mobile.
