Kate Winslet Traumatized by Hamsters!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Kate Winslet was traumatized when her pet hamster ate its babies.

The Oscar-winning actress has revealed how she was left suffering from repetitive nightmares as a child after her family refused to listen to veterinary advice and her furry pet killed its offspring.

“When I was a kid, one of our hamsters suddenly gave birth — we didn’t even know she was pregnant,” Kate told Empire magazine.

“We phoned the pet shop and they said, ‘Take the babies away — hamsters get very frightened after they’ve given birth and you don’t want her to eat the babies.’

“We didn’t listen and that’s exactly what happened. This obviously affected me badly as I had a recurring dream about hamsters gobbling up their babies until I was about 15.”

Exclusive: BSG's Gaius Baltar Coming to FlashForward

Look who's FlashForward-ing: BSG's Gaius Baltar!

Battlestar Galactica's Gaius Baltar is FlashForwarding to ABC to make some trouble. English actor James Callis, who played the conflicted Baltar on Syfy's Battlestar, has been cast in a major role on FlashForward for several episodes at the end of the season, said co-show runner Jessika Borsiczky in an exclusive interview with SCI FI Wire.

"When I watched Battlestar, every time he wasn't in a scene I couldn't wait for him to come back," said Borsiczky. "And I really wanted to have an opportunity to work with him. Honestly, since the show was ordered, we've been excited to work with him. And I so just cast him in our show. He's playing a big role in some of the final episodes this season, and it was for that very reason."

How pop became porn.

The woman is naked - or looks like she is. Only a flesh-coloured leotard covers her body. Her long blonde hair tumbles down her back. She's in a cage, sliding her fingers provocatively in and out of her mouth.

A scene from a cliched pornographic film? Sadly not. The woman in question is Shakira, a pop superstar and the fourth richest singer in the world.

The images can be seen in the video for her single, She Wolf, which will be watched obsessively, again and again, by thousands of young men and women, many of whom will form the opinion that writhing in a cage is precisely the way 'sexy' women should behave.

Massive earthquake strikes Chile

~8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Chile

A massive magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck south-central Chile early on Saturday, killing at least six people, triggering a tsunami and rattling buildings in the capital Santiago.

President Michelle Bachelet said six people were killed and that more deaths were possible. Telephone and power lines were down, making a quick assessment of the damage difficult in the early morning darkness.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 a.m. (0643 GMT).

Local television stations said there was damage to buildings in the historic center of Santiago, which lies about 200 miles north of the epicenter.

People streamed onto the streets of the capital, hugging each other and crying, and there were blackouts in parts of the city.

An earthquake of magnitude 8 or over can cause "tremendous damage," the USGS says. The quake that devastated Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince on January 12 was rated at magnitude 7.0.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the Chile quake generated a tsunami that may have been destructive along the coast near the epicenter "and could also be a threat to more distant coasts." It issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru, and a tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.

According to a 2002 census, Concepcion is one of the largest cities in Chile with a population of around 670,000.

Chile's main copper producing region and some of the world's largest copper mines are in the far north of the country near its border with Peru, but there are also copper deposits near Santiago.

Chile produces about 34 percent of world supply of copper, which is used in electronics, cars and refrigerators.

In 1960, Chile was hit by the world's biggest earthquake since records dating back to 1900.

The 9.5 magnitude quake devastated the south-central city of Valdivia, killing 1,655 people and sending a tsunami which battered Easter Island 2,300 miles off Chile's Pacific seaboard and continued as far as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

I know this isn't celbrity gossip but it is pretty big news. The Haiti earthquake was a 7.0 for comparison

EW asks: Are 'Supernatural' and 'Smallville' better than 'Gossip Girl' and '90210'?

titre ou description

Watching Smallville this week, I had a Zod-like epiphany. [insert Smallville spoilery paragraph here.]

But watching the hour, I kept seeing commercials for new March episodes of Melrose Place and 90210 and Gossip Girl and Life Unexpected. I have a soft spot for the lovably twee Life, but it’s not really amounting to much. As for the rest: blechh. Seeing all that promotional posing and pouting, I thought, I’ve pretty much had it with the CW’s cool-hip brigade. And that so includes One Tree Hill.

The CW has never had huge ratings, and it’s struggled to establish its brand identity. So here’s an idea. Why not rededicate itself to being the home of Supernatural, Smallville, and Vampire Diaries (its best cool-hip show primarily because its cool-hip is enlivened by its fantasy element), and develop more shows in this genre?

Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson: Drawn Together

Fellow Scots Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson have been pals for more than two decades. But it took How to Train Your Dragon, an animated movie about Vikings and dragons, to bring them together on screen

By Ingrid Randoja

Gerard Butler’s fierceness may have frightened the Persians in 300, but good luck getting the actor to remain serious during an interview.
The 40-year-old Scottish heartthrob, and his co-star Craig Ferguson, are on the phone from Los Angeles to chat about their animated kids flick How to Train Your Dragon, which opens this month along with Butler’s other movie, the action/rom-com The Bounty Hunter, which co-stars Jennifer Aniston.

How to Train Your Dragon
is based on the book by Cressida Cowell and casts Butler as the Viking Stoick, chieftain of the Hairy Hooligans. The Vikings live in fear of the dragons who attack them, but when Stoick’s son, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), befriends a dragon named Toothless, he sets out to change the Vikings’ — and especially his father’s — way of thinking.

He may seem a little young to be called "Grandpa," but 47-year-old Jim Carrey is embracing his new role now that daughter Jane Carrey has given birth to a baby boy.

Jane and husband Alex Santana welcomed their first child, son Jackson Riley Santana, at 12:28 a.m. Friday in Los Angeles, PEOPLE confirms. He weighed in at 7 lbs., 11 oz, and measured 20 inches long.

Tweeting about the new arrival, the proud new granddad posted a baby pic and wrote, "Jackson Riley Santana, My Grandson, Born today! This is what 7lbs.11oz. of Calfornia dynomite looks like!"

While she was pregnant, the Jane Carrey Band singer, 22, said she was looking forward to having a son with Santana, lead singer of the metal band Blood Money.

"I'm excited about it because I never really got along with girls growing up," Carrey said last year. "I was a little afraid that if it was a girl that she would not like me, you know? So I'm very happy about the boy."

Her actor dad predicted his little girl would do just fine as a parent.

"Jane is going to be a great mom," he said in July.

Jane's due date was Mar. 3.

Jerry Seinfeld under investigation for using NYPD parking permit

NO space for you!

NYPD Internal Affairs is investigating whether an ex-cop now working as Jerry Seinfeld's driver is using an expired placard to grab hard-to-find parking spaces in Manhattan.

The sitcom superstar's reps confirmed a former detective works for Seinfeld, but insisted they knew nothing about the official placard, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.

The parking permit - which expired December 2007 - allows the bearer to park at the Bronx Narcotics unit, Browne said.

Even if the permit was current and the detective was still on the job, it would not apply to parking in Manhattan, Browne said. It's possible the placard was a copy of the original, he added.

Seinfeld's spokeswoman, Elizabeth Clark Zoia, said the comedian just became aware his driver used the placard Wednesday when he was dropped off for a taping of his show, "The Marriage Ref."

The driver tossed the placard in the car's window when he jumped out to help Seinfeld get through the waiting crowd.

Orville Lloyd Douglas: Joannie Rochette won a medal due to racism, nationalism, pity, and politics

Vancouver Columnist provokes controversy and discussion after medal win. Here is the Column:

Yu-Na Kim of South Korea earned her gold medal. Her free skate was excellent, flawless, and wonderful. Kim is the Olympic champion, and the judges got that result right. However, some critics on the Internet are suggesting that the judges are racists and they did not want an Asian female sweep of the Olympic medals in figure skating. I agree with this cogent assessment.

Since Joannie Rochette is a white Canadian woman, the judges made sure a white female slipped into third place to prevent an Asian sweep. Can you imagine the faces of the white Canadian public if Kim, Mao Asada, and Miki Ando won all the Olympic medals in figure skating?Does anyone honestly think the white figure skating judges would allow Asian women to sweep the medals? Can you imagine the outcry?

There is a subversive issue of racism here that needs to be explored. Black feminist bell hooks reminds us that "race matters" in her incendiary work of the same name, and in women’s figure skating, “racism” was on full display last night.

It is obvious that the white women are not dominating women’s figure skating anymore. The Asian women have taken over. The Japanese women and the Korean woman, Kim, are the best female skaters in the world. They have the artistry, jumps, athleticism, and spins.

However, the silver medallist Asada and Rochette did not skate perfectly. American Mirai Nagasu's free skate was excellent. The judges decided her skate was fourth best. Is this really fair? How can the general public take figure skating seriously when politics influences skating results?

Ando was robbed! She is the sexiest woman in figure skating, and she was treated very harshly by these judges.I thought Ando of Japan deserved the silver medal. I saw her short program and I was shocked at the low marks she received. I also watched Ando’s free skate and she was excellent, yet she ends up in fifth place. Give me a break!

Ando is a graceful, talented, and beautiful skater, yet due to politics she was knocked off of the podium. I know very few people will defend Ando, but I feel I have to.
If Rochette had skated a clean long program with no errors, then there would be nothing to dispute. But Rochette’s free skate was terrible; she was very sloppy, and her skating was not refined.

Hey Dumbass, guess who's back on TV?

Kurtwood Smith to join new Josh Schwartz sitcom!

Former That 70's Show/Robocop actor to play Kristin Kreuk's father on CBS Pilot

Kurtwood Smith ("Worst Week") is returning to the Eye as the veteran actor has scored a role on the comedy pilot, about "a newlywed couple (Kristin Kreuk, Jack Carpenter) dealing with their family and friends." He'll play Rachel's (Kreuk) father, Wally Reynolds, who's "the epitome of loving and solid... and nosy." Smith joins the previously cast Eugene Levy (Jim's Dad from American Pie. He'll be playing the Husband's father). In addition, Rob Greenberg ("How I Met Your Mother") has been tapped to helm the half-hour from a script by co-creators Josh Schwartz and Matt Miller (main writer on Chuck). Warner Bros. Television is producing.

Awww shit, Clarence Boddicker/Red Foreman is back! Bitches Leave! Love this cranky motherfucker.

Even though its competing against 7 other pilot sitcoms for CBS next year,  a postive script review of the pilot (Zap2it.com gave it a 8.5/10) got me feeling hopeful that Kristin's sitcom has a chance. The idea that  Red Foreman and Jim's Dad are gonna be the bickering father in laws over a script put together by the guys from Chuck and HIMYM has potential to be another solid sitcom for CBS.  I'm curious to see who they cast for the friends and other family members, cause they've hit a home run with the dads.

And now, I present to you...a tribute to Red:

Street Named After Lara Croft

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

BUSTY video game icon Lara Croft will lend her name to a curvy new RING ROAD.
The Tomb Raider babe, played by Angelina Jolie in movie adaptations of the hit games, was created by Derby-based Core Design in the mid-1990s.

Bosses at the city's council today announced their new £36million ring road will be called Lara Croft Way following a public vote.

Nearly 28,000 people took part in the online poll, and Lara Croft emerged the clear winner — with 89 per cent of the vote.

Part of the ring road will also be named Mercian Way after the army regiment which recruits soldiers from the area.

Other ideas included John Flamsteed Way, after the first Astronomer Royal, and Merlin Way, in recognition of the famous Rolls-Royce engine.

Councillor Lucy Care, in charge of planning at the council, said: "The suggestion of Lara Croft Way was one of the most popular in an earlier, lower-key request to the public for suggestions.

"The vote itself clearly really captured the imagination of people from across the world and this support means Lara Croft is too overwhelming to ignore.

"She was created in Derby and this naming will identify a time and place in history where she can stand alongside some of the more traditional icons of the city."

Not technically celebrity news, but interesting nontheless...

Joannie Rochette wins Terry Fox Award

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Skater Joannie Rochette who had a nation rooting for her after her mother’s sudden death and injured cross-country skier Petra Majdic of Slovenia were named joint recipients of the 2010 Terry Fox Award on Saturday.

The award was created to honour Olympians who touched the world with determination and character at the Games and was announced late last year by the Fox family and VANOC.

Both Rochette and Majdic won bronze medals during their competition.

Majdic, her country’s highest hopes for a gold medal, was injured after she slid on an icy corner and fell down a deep gully during the sprint portion of her race. She crashed and sustained four broken ribs but continued to compete and won bronze.

Rochette’s mother collapsed and died of a heart attack hours after arriving in Vancouver with Rochette’s father to see their only child compete. Rochette went on to compete a few days later and took the bronze medal becoming the first Canadian women’s single medal winner since Elizabeth Manley’s silver in the Calgary Games in 1988.

The award was named after Michael J Fox Terry Fox, the amputee runner who embarked on a cross-country journey to raise funds for cancer.

“Few people have touched the soul of this great nation like Terry Fox did on his Marathon of Hope in 1980. In honour of his spirit we created this award with the Fox family – one which we’re proud to present today to Petra and Joannie,” said VANOC CEO John Furlong.

Diplo 'Not Mad At' Rihanna For Similarities Between 'Rude Boy' And M.I.A.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Recently Rihanna dropped the pop-art video for her single "Rude Boy" — and at least one person has commented on what he feels are similarities between it and M.I.A.'s "Boyz" and its video.

"Riri is lookin soo damn hawt in this video but its super boyz boyz boyz #howmaydere ? yahmsayin?," Diplo tweeted earlier this month. The next day, the producer recorded and tweeted a mash-up of "Boyz" and "Rude Boy" onto the web via his Twitter account. Still, Diplo says he's a RiRi fan.

"I downloaded Rihanna's album as soon as it came out because I was interested in seeing the pop world's take on dub-step [musical style], because that's what they were supposed to do," Diplo told MTV News. "It was pretty weak except for 'Rude Boy,' which is one of my favorite songs of the year thus far. I'm glad it came out as a single, but when I saw the video I was like, 'This is a total rip-off of M.I.A.'s "Boyz" video, with a little bit of Santigold as well.' But it's cool because she looks beautiful in the video. I just thought it was funny."

With three albums released between them, M.I.A. and Santigold — Diplo has produced tracks for both artists; his collaborator Switch produced "Boyz" — rule the genre-bending space of alternative R&B, reggae, dubstep and rock. M.I.A.'s influential single "Paper Planes," from her Kala LP, dropped in 2007, and then the track was sampled by Kanye West for T.I.'s 2008 single "Swagga Like Us" featuring Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and West — a very pregnant M.I.A. joined the team for a performance during last year's Grammy Awards.

Like M.I.A., Santigold's work has been a critical favorite but hasn't sold in large numbers in the states. Both ladies continue to fly under the pop-culture radar, but Diplo says their work seems to move the needle of the music industry.

"I'm here recording in Jamaica with Santigold and producer Switch, who's part of the group Major Lazer with me — we always come with really progressive ideas," Diplo said. "Even with our Major Lazer single, 'Pon De Floor,' after a year of the record leaking, now it's become the single for the labels to follow even though it's old for us. A&Rs want a record like that now, but we offered that record to all of those people a year ago."

The producer said he's happy that his work is appreciated, but he has to work extra hard to gain recognition for his ideas.

"People at the major labels always seem to be a bit slow to catch on to stuff that's trend-setting," he added. "Like M.I.A.'s single 'Boyz' was so cutting-edge, crazy and hyper-fast that it was scary for people when we made it, but now that type of music is digestible for people because M.I.A.'s already blazed a trail for alternative reggae urban music so we made it safe for Rihanna to do cutting edge things. I'm not mad at ["Rude Boy"], especially because Rihanna looks super hot in the video and it looks amazing, better than "Boyz." I'm used to getting our sh-- ripped off. We're paving the road so that other people can drive on it."

At press time, a rep for Rihanna had not responded to MTV News' requests for comment.

Sipping on a cup of tea, the “Bad Romance” songstress looked re-energized after she rocked the stage and made over 10 costume changes during the hour and a half show on Friday.

In other news, Gaga has a fan in Megan Fox; a friend of the actress recently told press, “Megan is a massive Lady GaGa fan.”

Continuing on, the friend said, “She says she’s super sexy and exactly the kind of girl who could tempt her away from men for life!”

Hurt Locker unrealistic, real EOD technicians watch it & laugh

Reporting from Baghdad, Los Angeles and Washington - Many film critics -- and awards voters -- have praised “The Hurt Locker’s” depiction of the U.S. military in Iraq, often singling out the bomb disposal drama for its authenticity. But as the film emerges as a favorite to win the best picture Oscar, a number of active soldiers and veterans say the film is Hollywood hokum, portraying soldiers as renegades while failing to represent details about combat accurately.

The criticism, coming just before Oscar ballots are due Tuesday, highlights the delicate relationship between "The Hurt Locker" and the nation's armed forces. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates says the film is "authentic" and "very compelling" and has recommended it to his staff. But the government says it pulled its "Hurt Locker" production assistance at the last minute in 2007, saying that the film's makers were shooting scenes that weren't in the screenplay submitted to the Defense Department, including a sequence that the government believed portrayed troops unflatteringly. The film's producers dispute elements of the account.

Although "The Hurt Locker" has numerous supporters within the military -- including Purple Heart winner Drew Sloan, who participated in a "Hurt Locker" panel discussion in Hollywood with other veterans and the film's makers Wednesday night -- the movie's detractors share a consistent complaint about its representation of the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team as they attempt to disarm improvised explosive devices.

The film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by journalist Mark Boal (who was embedded with a bomb disposal team), stars Jeremy Renner as Staff Sgt. William James. Not deterred by protocol or his own safety, James is an adrenaline-addicted bomb defuser who occasionally puts his unit at risk, and at one point takes to the streets of Baghdad on a solo personal mission. Members of EOD teams in southern Iraq said in interviews arranged by the Army that "The Hurt Locker" is a good action movie if you know nothing about defusing roadside bombs or the military.

Having been busy as of late boosting interest in her homeland ahead of the recent release of her movie “Nine,” Marion spoke with press about the struggles of fame.

The Oscar-winning actress tells, “The public talks about stars. But when you’re working you’re simply someone who’s working, working with passion and sometimes with anxiety.”

Then asked why so few thespians have made their way into Hollywood stardom out of the French market, Miss Cotillard tells, “I believe this is because we’re one of the rare European countries to have a hugely rich and diverse film industry.”

Kimberly Wyatt leaves the Pussycat Dolls

Kimberly Wyatt has announced that she has decided to leave the Pussycat Dolls.

Wyatt, who recently appeared as a judge on Sky1 show Got To Dance, has previously said that she is unsure about the future of the band and has revealed plans to create a new group without lead singer Nicole Scherzinger.

She has also admitted that she does not think of Scherzinger as a friend.

Wyatt has now revealed that she has decided to quit the band because of the "variables off-stage".

"I've left the group," she told Loaded. "I am so thankful for everything the Pussycat Dolls [have] brought into my life. But I have to say there were just too many variables that I couldn't agree with and I had to follow my heart. So I decided to kind of push on with my own life."

Wyatt added: "Money and fame can't buy happiness. Ultimately I think that happiness is the most important thing in life and I think that once I started to get to know myself more and more I was like, 'You know, I don't think that happiness is within this group right now'.

"I wish that it was different because I love what we do on stage. I love being a Doll, but as far as the variables off-stage are concerned - I just couldn't do it anymore."

Adam Lambert Talks Past Drug Use

He has sky-rocketed to super-stardom ever since his stint on “American Idol” and now Adam Lambert is opening up about his past.

In an interview with News of The World, Lambert admits to drug abuse, telling of his teenage years, “I went wild and I was experimenting with certain substances.”

“At 26 I started running with hippies, going to underground events, I was really drawn to that crowd, everyone embraced each other’s differences. It didn’t get to the stage where it ruined my life or where it was anything too serious but it was definitely something I tried,” adds Adam.

Not holding anything back, the 28-year-old singer continued, “There are certain drugs out there that are really fun and recreational and can mean a good time. I’m not an advocate for drugs but it is all rock and roll and we are all adults.”

I dunno about y'all, but I'm excited as hell for this! My broke-ass will probably end up buying that DVD. I'm glad Season 4 will be the last, and it's getting a proper finale, unlike past Disney shows which randomly ended.

Johnny Depp on 48 Hour Mystery

Johnny Depp makes a rare appearance as part of a TV newsmagazine this weekend, and he's not just a tease to get people in.

"This is not window dressing," says Susan Zirinsky, executive producer of CBS' "48 Hours Mystery," which Saturday at 10 p.m. has an extensive interview with Depp about the West Memphis Three - a trio of teenagers convicted of killing three boys in West Memphis, Ark., 16 years ago. "This is a man who grew up in Kentucky and felt some of the same alienation that these boys did," Zirinsky says. "He related to this case. He looked different [growing up]; they treated him like he was crazy."

After the bodies of the three 8-year-olds were discovered in 1993, there was speculation that their killings had been a satanic ritual. The case developed at a time when there was a media-fueled hysteria about cults, and Damien Echols, who had long hair and an affinity for dressing in black, became a suspect.

More Asians (Hopefully) Headed to TV This Fall

Grace Park ("Battlestar Galactica") and Kelly Hu ("X2") are two of the latest additions to fall pilots.

Park joins Alex O'Loughlin, Daniel Dae Kim, and Taryn Manning in CBS' "Hawaii Five-O" redux. The updated take centers on an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police headed by Steve McGarrett (O'Loughlin). Park will play Kona Kalakaua, the niece of squad member Chin Ho Kelly (Kim), who is about to graduate from the police academy when she is recruited to the team. In the original series, Kalakaua was a male character. Interestingly enough, Park's "Battlestar" character, Boomer, was a male in that series' original incarnation as well.

Hu boards the drama pilot, "The Odds," also for CBS. "The Odds," starring "Scrubs'" Donald Faison, is a buddy-cop show set in Las Vegas, where the police are as outrageous as the crimes they solve. Hu will play a tough-as-nails ADA who pushes the guys to deconstruct the bizarre crime scenes and serves as the moral voice of the show.

A vampire, ghost, and a werewolf walk into a bar...

Here is a clip that the BBC put up for tomorrow nights series finale of Being Human on BBC3.

So, what do you all think is in store for our anti-heroes? I personally hope Mitchell continues down his dark/crazy path. Because he's kinda hot when he's unhinged.

Sorry, mods that I didn't put the title of the show. Hopefully, it is clearer now.

Here's a hot pic of Aidan Turner to sweeten the deal:

Keisha Castle-Hughes is Jesus. Sorta.

Keisha Castle-Hughes has signed on to guest star in an episode of the syndicated hit "Legend of the Seeker."

Castle-Hughes will be filming her appearance this week, shooting in her native New Zealand. The 19-year-old actress will play a young woman claiming to be the living embodiment of a God. She apparently has plenty of power to go with that confidence, so it's up to Richard (Craig Horner), Kahlan (Bridget Regan) and Zedd (Bruce Spence) to find out the truth about her identity.

In 2004, Castle-Hughes became the younger performer to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her work in the feature "Whale Rider" (losing to Charlize Theron for "Monster"). She later played Mary in "The Nativity Story." If you've been missing her since then, she appeared in something called "Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger" and in the New Zealand telefilm "Piece of My Heart."

Currently in its second season, "Legend of the Seeker" airs Saturdays and Sundays in national syndication.

The Gossip Girl actor — who plays Chuck Bass on the hit show — is widely rumored to be dating costar Jessica Szohr, but he admits he likes chatting up pretty female fans to pass the time.

“We are always shooting on the Upper East Side, so often when any girls come over to watch, they are from that demographic — y’know, rich kids,” Ed said.

“If they were like the characters on the show they would have quite a lot to live up to — but if they are like that, I’d like them to call me!”

Dance: In Figure Skating World, Winning Leaps Over Art

Dance: In Figure Skating World, Winning Leaps Over Art
Published: February 26, 2010

From experience, three things happen the moment that you let it slip that you used to be a figure skater: there is an incredulous pause, a sharp “Really?” and laughter. The order of the first two can change, but the exchange always ends in laughter.

The American Johnny Weir, who has a dancer's sense. Article Slide Show (Multiple Skaters)

At the Olympics, figure skating is more exposed to the world than ever in all of its tacky, high-def glory. The garish costumes, the canned music, the kiss-and-cry routine as skaters wait for their scores — it’s easy to make fun. I can still see the Belgian skater Kevin van der Perren’s skeleton costume without closing my eyes. (When will that stop?) But as an amateur who had professional coaching, I loved being part of that world, or what it once represented.

Figure skating exists in a murky place — it’s tempting to find parallels to dance. Both forms feature movement in space and time set to music, and some skaters even study ballet. Still, when a certain recurring question crops up — is figure skating a sport or an art — I’m reminded of the jokes, and the answer is clear: it’s a sport with delusions of grandeur.

There was a time when skaters who embodied lyricism, like the 1960s star Peggy Fleming or even the more recent Sasha Cohen, rose to the top. Though routines have the potential for putting expression into steps, it’s increasingly unusual that artistry can emerge beyond sheer mechanics. It can come close. On Thursday night at the Vancouver Olympics, the women’s competition drew to a close on an elegant note as Kim Yu-na, a South Korean skater capable of all that and more, was awarded the gold. (On Sunday the top skaters will perform in an exhibition.)
