TV Ratings: Dollhouse rises Ghost Whisperer leads CBS to win

Dollhouse rose to a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating and 2.25 million viewers. That’s up from last week’s .8 (which rose to .9 in the final numbers) by 25%. Now we wait to see what happens on 10/23 since next Friday, 10/16 is the first round of the ALCS (baseball conference championships) on FOX.
CBS’s Ghost Whisperer easily won the 8pm hour with a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating vs. Law & Order’s 1.5. Ghost Whisperer was the only show on Friday night (at least on broadcast networks) to crack a 2.0.
At 9pm Medium’s 1.9 led Dateline’s 1.5. For those playing along in the “Guess Medium Ratings and win a DVD” contest, you’ll need to wait for the final numbers which we won’t see until Monday or Tuesday.
CBS’ Numb3rs took the 10pm hour, but things were fairly bunched up for the hour.

YES! Victor/Enver was amazing last night.

Chris Pine in NYC

Well, hello there, Chris Pine!

The Star Trek stud was spotted walking the streets of New York on Friday, carrying a script that he'd been seen poring over in a coffee shop earlier.

Could it be the script for his currently-filming action flick Unstoppable, co-starring Denzel Washington?

Just something to ponder as you click through our photo gallery and delight in the sight of Chris "Mighty Fine" Pine.

Oprah Winfrey Sued Over Accusations of Sex On Her Private Jet

A flight attendant has filed suit alleging she was fired by Oprah Winfrey's company, Harpo, Inc. as a result of a false accusation she and a married pilot had sex on the plane while Oprah napped.

Corrine Gehrls has sued Harpo, Inc. and fellow flight attendants Myron Gooch and Kirby Bumpus for the claimed wrongful termination. In her legal filing, Gehrls says she and Chief Pilot Terry Pansing had a on-going dispute with Gooch over work schedules. It became so heated, Gooch "recruited" Bumpus to join him in a plot to get the two fired. Bumpus is the daughter of Oprah's best friend Gayle King.

According to the document, "Gooch and Bumpus falsely told Winfrey and Harpo that on the June 14, 2009 Harpo flight, the passengers on which included Winfrey and Bumpus, Pansing and Gehrls had been observed having inappropriate intimate conduct outside the cockpit of the plane." The pair was terminated July 7.

Pansing and Gooch, on the advice of their respective attorneys, took polygraph examinations which they say proved they were truthful in their insistence they hadn't joined the Mile High Club on Oprah's plane. They presented the test results to Winfrey but she refused to reinstate them.

Gooch's lawsuit says that Pansing has separately settled the matter with Harpo, Inc. She wants at least $300,000 in damages.

Joss Whedon's 'Cabin in the Woods' Pushed to 2011 for 3-D Conversion

MGM Studios has decided to push Joss Whedon's anticipated horror flick "The Cabin in the Woods," directed and co-written by Cloverfield's Drew Goddard, back nearly a year, from its original release date of February 5, 2010 to the new date of January 14, 2011.

MGM reps tell ShockTillYouDrop.com the reason they're doing this is because the early response to the film has been phenomenal and they're going to spend six months or so converting the picture to 3-D.

Described as a "twisted and unusual take on the familiar 'cabin in the woods' formula," the film stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, and Brian White.

Source: ShockTillYouDrop.com

Say what you want about 3-D, but there's no doubt that it's a money-maker. I don't think "The Final Destination" would have made as much if it wasn't in 3-D. Anyway, I'm only disappointed because it means I'll have to wait longer to see this double dose of hotness on the big screen.

LA Times interviews DOLLHOUSE star Enver Gjokaj, EW gives last night's ep an 'A'

'Dollhouse': Victor the serial killer, and the actor who plays him

Enver Gjokaj as Victor in "Dollhouse" helps make the "Belle Chose" episode one of the creepiest yet in the show's limited history. Questionably using a doll to reconstruct a serial killer, Echo taking on another sexy role, an unprecedented remote wipe of a doll and another "Battlestar Galactica" cast mate (Michael Hogan) making an appearance all make this a memorable concoction. We got to talk a bit to the world-traveling actor about his "Dollhouse" off-season, this particular episode, and what's up with Victor this season.

This week’s Dollhouse was overseen by two veteran members of Team Whedon, Tim Minear (who wrote the episode) and David Solomon (director), and proved an improvement over last week’s turgid Echo-finds-her-maternal-side episode. Bolstered by two strong plotlines and a Battlestar Galactica grad (Michael Hogan), “Belle Chose” managed to wrestle with the usual dolls-as-whores dilemma in a manner that was a lot more brisk and witty than usual…

On its current tour Metallica has reached deeper into its 25-year discography, mixing in older, infrequently played tunes. It's doing this even with a batch of excellent new tracks, plus the usual must-haves ("Master of Puppets," "Creeping Death," "Whiplash," "One"). Many diehard fans would agree, though, the band could dig even deeper -- and perhaps weed out some overplayed tracks. Some suggestions:

"Trapped Under Ice"
"The Frayed Ends of Sanity"
"Hit the Lights"
"... And Justice for All" (HELL MOTHERFUCKING YES)
"Metal Militia"
"Leper Messiah"
"Phantom Lord"
"Disposable Heroes"

"Nothing Else Matters"
"Sad but True" (So tired of hearing this and Seek at every show.)
"Harvester of Sorrow" (Fuck that shit, epic song is epic.)
"The Unforgiven" (BORING.)
"Fade to Black" (Overrated.)

Bruce Springsteen Closes Out Giants Stadium

For Springsteen and Giants Stadium, a Last Dance

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Published: October 10, 2009

EAST RUTHERFORD — Giants Stadium heard its last sha-la-las — at least, the amplified kind with tens of thousands of voices singing along — on Friday night, when Bruce Springsteen played the final concert before the stadium is demolished. During the three-hour set, sha-la-las filled this year’s “Working on a Dream,” the 1984 song “Darlington County” and Tom Waits’ “Jersey Girl,” the finale that Mr. Springsteen called the stadium’s “last dance.” It was Mr. Springsteen’s 24th performance, dating back to 1985, at Giants Stadium, where the audiences are his most fervent fans: fellow New Jerseyans.

So in a way, Mr. Springsteen could identify with the place, and he did — at least half-seriously — in “Wrecking Ball,” a robust, guitar-strumming song he wrote to start off each of his five final concerts at the stadium. (A video performance is at brucespringsteen.net.)

It may be the only song ever to make Giants Stadium itself the narrator, “raised out of steel in the swamps of Jersey.” It remembers games played and blood spilled, and envisions the stadium’s fate, when “all this steel and these stories, they drift away to rust/and all our youth and beauty’s been given to the dust.” Typically, Mr. Springsteen was thinking about work, mortality, and a sense of place, on his way to a chorus where everyone could join in.

He wasn’t overly sentimental. Later, he pointedly called Giants Stadium “the last bastion of affordable sports seating.”

At each of the Giants Stadium concerts, Mr. Springsteen played one of his albums all the way through, and the one he chose for Friday was his 1984 blockbuster, “Born in the U.S.A.” Before he started the title track, he said it was “the song we started out with the first time we entered this arena.”

The album inaugurated Mr. Springsteen’s stadium era, when he strove to draw mass audiences, though still on his own terms. “Born in the U.S.A.” is an album of big riffs and broad strokes. It was also an album about home: a country (the U.S.A.), a hometown (“My Hometown”), and houses holding personal memories. And it was a paradox.

The lyrics, by and large, are about hard times and irreparable losses. Mr. Springsteen had hits with “Born in the U.S.A.,” about a neglected Vietnam veteran, and “Dancing in the Dark,” about depression with the barest glimmer of hope. Yet most of the music is celebratory, brazening through setbacks with rock and roll: the Rolling Stones twang of “Darlington County,” the merry carousel-organ chords of “Glory Days,” or the rockabilly boogie of “Working on the Highway,” which ends with its narrator in prison.

The musicians who made “Born in the U.S.A.” are all still in Mr. Springsteen’s E Street Band except for the keyboardist Danny Federici, who died last year. The concert had no celebrity guest performers; this was the home team.

Performing the album 25 years later, Mr. Springsteen sang with deeper nuance; he was more desperate in “Born in the U.S.A.,” angrier in “I’m Goin’ Down.” And the band has slightly bulked up the music without cluttering it. There was a seismic drum interlude by Max Weinberg in “Born in the U.S.A.,” and Nils Lofgren played frantic, searing guitar solos in “Cover Me.” The songs have not faded.

The rest of the concert spanned Mr. Springsteen’s major-label career, reaching back to “Spirit in the Night” from his 1973 debut album. It reaffirmed the band’s camaraderie; Mr. Springsteen kissed both Patti Scialfa, his wife and E Street backup singer, and Clarence Clemons, the band’s saxophonist. The set riffled through styles, from the swinging “Kitty’s Back” (with Roy Bittan splashing jazzy piano chords and Mr. Springsteen playing barbed, bluesy lead guitar), to the Irish jig of “American Land,” to chiming anthems like “Badlands.”

There was a glimpse of politics, in “Last To Die,” and a rush of redemption in “The Rising” and “Born To Run” (which had Jay Weinberg, Max’s son and occasional E Street Band replacement, on drums.) And there was the constantly renewed bond between Mr. Springsteen and his audience. He strolled walkways where fans grabbed his legs, he picked up signs with requests — choosing “the perfect request for this evening,” the Rolling Stones song “The Last Time” — and he crowd-surfed in “Hungry Heart.” The video screens kept intercutting Mr. Springsteen and the musicians with fans singing, verses and choruses, as if to say the songs were theirs now, too.

They were songs full of hardworking people, and Mr. Springsteen’s last goodbye to his home stadium was to them: he dedicated “Jersey Girl” to “all the crew and staff that’s worked all these years at Giants Stadium.” Some had probably been singing “sha-la-la” too.

Dame Maggie Smith: cancer fight has left me too tired for the stage

Dame Maggie Smith is contemplating giving up theatre acting after being “knocked sideways” fighting breast cancer.

In an interview with The Times, Dame Maggie, 74, said that the intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy regimes, and her subsequent recovery, had left her “frightened” of returning to the stage. The winner of five Baftas and two Oscars — most famously for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie — said of the cancer, diagnosed last year: “It leaves you so flattened. I’m not sure I could go back to theatre work, although film work is more tiring. I’m frightened to work in theatre now. I feel very uncertain. I haven’t done it for a while.”

Her last stage role was in The Lady From Dubuque in 2007. “It’s one of those things you ought to keep on doing and I haven’t for a bit,” she said. “I would love to be able to, because I do love it, but I feel a great lack of confidence.” Her experience of cancer “very much” changed her. “I think it’s the age I was when it happened. It knocks you sideways. It takes you longer to recover, you are not so resilient. I am fearful of the amount of energy one needs to be in a film or a play.”

Fans at this year’s 53rd Times BFI London Festival will see Dame Maggie play a woman helping her grandson to solve a ghost story in Julian Fellowes’s moving tale From Time To Time.

Last year Dame Maggie found a lump on her breast. “I had been feeling a little rum. I didn’t think it was anything serious because years ago I felt a lump and it was benign. I assumed this would be too. It kind of takes the wind out of your sails, and I don’t know what the future holds, if anything. I don’t think there’s a lot of it, because of my age — there just isn’t. It’s all been. I’ve no idea what there will be.”

She revealed that she made Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince — playing Professor Minerva McGonagall — during her cancer treatment. “I was hairless. I had no problem getting the wig on. I was like a boiled egg.”

The cancer was “hideous”, the chemotherapy “something that makes you feel much worse than the cancer itself”, she said. “You feel horribly sick. I was holding on to railings, thinking ‘I can’t do this’.” Dame Maggie is planning to “stagger through” filming the final Harry Potter film, The Deathly Hallows.

“I don’t think I’ve fulfilled myself,” she said of her acting. “I don’t think I’ve been good enough.” If she returns to the stage, she wants to perform original roles. She has “already shouted” at Alan Bennett, who wrote The Lady in the Van, which she performed in 2000.

“The last couple of years have been a write-off, though I’m beginning to feel like a person now,” she said. “My energy is coming back. S*** happens. I ought to pull myself together a bit.”

Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger throws Detroit police a bone.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Detroit -- The city, which has become like a second home for the Pittsburgh Steelers after they won a Super Bowl here in 2006, will receive two new K-9 unit dogs from Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Ben Roethlisberger's foundation announced it will be distributing grant money to the police department to buy two new canines that will replace two other dogs who are retiring at the end of this year.

Roethlisberger already has made donations to police and fire departments in his city. He has invited departments in eight communities near Pittsburgh to submit proposals for a grant from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at the Giving Back Fund. Detroit was one of them.

The grants aim to provide support for police and fire departments in the country as well as the lives of people living in Pittsburgh and Findlay, Ohio.

"We have had the opportunity to see first-hand how important the dogs are to these men and women who risk their lives every day to protect us," Roethlisberger said in announcing the award. "It's incredible to see the strong bond that is formed between the dogs and their partners both on the job and at home."

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans said he appreciates the help.

"We are deeply appreciative to the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation for this grant," Evans said. "In these difficult budgetary times, we must rely more and more on outside sources of funding to support our officers' efforts. This grant will provide our officers additional resources to protect the citizens of Detroit."

The Steelers play the Detroit Lions on Sunday at 1pm at Ford Field.

Amy Winehouse is "hopefully" going to release the follow-up to her 2006 album 'Back To Black' next year, according to her record label boss.

Island records co-president Darcus Beese told BBC News that some demos for the long-awaited third album from the singer had already been recorded.

"I've heard a couple of song demos that absolutely floored me," he said. "Hopefully we'll have her album next year."

He added that the demo sessions had been recorded "in fits and starts".

Winehouse has been overseeing the release of her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield's debut album, 'Introducing Dionne Bromfield', out Monday (October 12). The album is being released through Winehouse's own record label, Lioness Records.

To promote the record, Winehouse is set to make her public comeback on 'Strictly Come Dancing', singing backing vocals for Bromfield.

jackson freaks out 'simpsons'

Michael Jackson was the most famous guest star on "The Simpsons" -- and also the strangest, even 16 years ago, says former Vanity Fair staffer John Ortved in his book on the much-beloved Fox cartoon series.

In "The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History," the show's writers and producers detail just how bizarre it was working with the former King of Pop, who appeared on the 1991-1992 season as a bald, 400-pound mental patient who believes he's Michael Jackson while sharing a hospital room with Homer.

The crew did a rehearsal "at Jackson's manager's house, which was unheard of -- we never left the studio -- and it was a crazy environment where we were all served food by Sikhs in white robes and turbans," recalls writer Wallace Wolodarsky.

Hank Azaria, the voice of Moe and Chief Wiggum, adds, "I remember having to make conversation with Michael Jackson. That had to be one of the freakiest moments of my life . . . he wasn't quite the figure he's become today, but still, I remember even then, staring at his nose, and it was all about, 'Don't Stare at His Nose.' "

When it came time for Jackson to come into the studio, editor Brian Roberts recalls, "I literally didn't want to look at him. So I get my head buried in the script, and then at one point in the script he sang, 'Man in the Mirror,' and I said, 'All right. How many times in your life are you sitting next to Michael Jackson and he's singing "Man in the Mirror?" I just gotta look.'

"So I look over to Michael Jackson, and he wasn't singing! He had a sing-along guy next to him who was actually singing for him. I couldn't believe it. I was like, What kinda weird [expletive] is this?"

The book goes on sale Oct. 13.

Miley Cyrus Writes a Letter to Her Fans

Miley Cyrus' MileyWorld blog about why she deleted he Twitter:

To my dearest fans, You all are the closest thing to my heart & it breaks my spirit to hear that some of you feel neglected since I deleted my twitter. It was a wonderful way to stay connected to you & I really felt like during that time we became very much like friends. Twitter is a beautiful thing if used for the right reason. I love my job so much that it is hard to believe sometimes that it is considered working.

But, in the end it is still a business and I do need some sort of a 'normal' life as well. I often complain to the ones closest to me that I don't seem to have much of a private life any more and part of that is my fault. How can I whine about my life being to public if I am the one telling the world what I am doing? Some things in my life need to say in my life only and not on some gossip site.

Sigourney Weaver still committed to gorilla rescue

Actress Sigourney Weaver says orphaned gorillas desperately need a permanent rescue and rehabilitation center that's currently being built in the Congo.

Weaver was at Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center to talk about the center, which is a project of the Atlanta-based Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and several other organizations. Weaver says the project is "very demanding and ambitious."

Fossey, a Californian, made researching and rescuing the African gorilla population her life's mission. Weaver played Fossey in the 1988 movie "Gorillas in the Mist" and is honorary chair of the fund.

Construction of the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center began in February, and it is set to open in March.

Hobbit reunion!

Last night, NYC’s Radio City Music Hall played host to a screening of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Which would’ve been awesome enough by itself — given that Radio City is a fantastic place to see a film, and I haven’t seen Fellowship on a big screen since its initial 2001 release — but what made it super-special was that Howard Shore’s score was performed, live, by a 300-person orchestra, along with a massive choir.

The movie remains as majestic as it ever was — but watching it with a crowd who knew every beat (and some of whom were dressed as their favorite elves or wizards), applauded at every major character introduction (it was a loudness-tie between Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn and Orlando Bloom’s Legolas) and minor cameo (like Jackson’s), and knew when to laught and then shut up was a hoot and a half. Add to that the spectacle of the live orchestra — and if you’ve never seen one, I can’t recommend it highly enough; an orchestra that knows their stuff is like a massive joy machine, one with hundreds of moving parts, all working in concert — and it was terrific night at the theater.

After the two-and-a-half hours of Fellowship came to an end, and the orchestra took their final bows, composer Howard Shore walked out on stage, accompanied by two special guests: Elijah Wood and Billy Boyd. And they looked just as tickled by the evening as the rest of us. Too bad we’ve got to wait until Oct. 9, 2010 to see The Two Towers in the same fashion at Radio City.

While this wasn’t my favorite big-screen moviegoing experience — that’d be seeing Serenity at a San Diego Comic-Con screening, introduced by Joss Whedon, with an audience who sang the Firefly theme song while waiting — but it was in the top 5, for sure. What’s yours?

Last week's discussion post was a success (due to Gaga and Madonna) but lets see if this is something we should do every week to keep OT comments out of other posts.

Full Cast and Premise of Resident Evil: Afterlife

Before the Resident Evil franchise is, rightfully, rebooted, we're going to have one more foray into the half-assed world of clones, superpowers and convoluted, half-baked ideas courtesy of Paul W.S. Anderson. Read on for a full cast list and plot breakdown.

Sony Screen Gems has announced that Wentworth Miller (Prison Break), Norman Yeung and Kacey Barnfield will join up alongside returning cast members Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter and Spencer Locke to battle legions of the undead. Miller will play Chris Redfield, brother of Claire (Larter) and badass member of S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team. Shawn Roberts will play Albert Wesker, a rogue company man with powers that rival Alice's.

Thankfully, Mike Epps will remain dead.

Official Synopsis:

In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the Undead, ALICE (Milla Jovovich), continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead leads them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

The first one will always be my favourite.
