Imelda Marcos' shoes saved from Philippine floods

Imeldific shoes saved from floods

MANILA, Philippines—While shoemakers were badly hit by the Sept. 26 deluge, a part of Imelda Marcos’ hugely famous shoe collection on display at the Footwear Museum in Marikina City remained safe.

"A guard was able to take most of the pairs to the second floor. We will account for them in due time, but our priority right now is still the affected families," said Marikina City Mayor Marides Fernando.

"What we’re worried about is the loss of jobs. For sure many shoemakers will close down," Fernando said in an interview with the Inquirer on Tuesday.

The two-story museum, Asia’s first, was conceptualized by Fernando’s husband, Bayani, when he was Marikina mayor. It was inaugurated in February 2001.

200 pairs

The 200 pairs that had been on display there were among Imelda’s collection of 1,220 pairs—a subject of international amusement and ridicule. The shoes were uncovered in Malacañang after her husband, the dictator Ferdinand Marcos, was ousted in the 1986 People Power Revolution.

The museum is located on J.P. Rizal Street in a low-lying section of the city that was flooded in the Sept. 26 drenching by Tropical Storm "Ondoy" (international codename: Ketsana).

Bayani Fernando, who is chair of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, had said that Marikina owed its fame to the former first lady, who had inspired the city’s shoemakers and helped them break into the world market.

Malacañang, with Imelda’s permission, had turned over the 200 pairs to the Marikina City government, and agreed to put them on display, plus other footwear and terno from her recent personal collection.

Chris Salvatore may be a Hollywood newcomer but he doesn’t hold back when it comes to speaking about gay rights issues or his film and music career.

Chris makes his film debut as the main love interest, Zack, in Glenn Gaylord’s new film Eating Out: All You Can Eat. He was cast as one of the lead roles of the film just two weeks after moving to Los Angeles—certainly an aspiring actor’s dream come true!

When it comes to making the film, the experience was more personal. The out gay actor is grateful to be a part of a successful franchise that encourages people to be themselves.

Chris explains, “Some people may think being an openly gay actor may limit one’s success, but I think times are changing and I am happy and proud to be myself.”

The film doesn’t try to break barriers or change one’s point of view. Instead, the film is just filled with silly and raunchy humor that aims to please its audience.

“Even though the movie is mostly a sex comedy, the message and the lessons that the characters learn are truly what makes the film unique. It really does make you feel all warm and fuzzy.”

Chris would like to play more romantic comedy roles, straight or gay, and admits, “I would also love to play a role in a scary movie. Scary movies are my favorite.”

He studied at the prestigious New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts where he discovered his passion for film and theater. He explains how singing drew the bridge to acting:

“I used to sing in the choir in elementary school and we would stand up and sing while the stage crew swapped out the scenery in-between scenes during the school plays. The plays were always musicals so one year I decided to try out for a part. The first play I performed in was Bye, Bye Birdie and ever since then I’ve been in love with both singing and acting.”

Chris has been singing since he was just a toddler and writing music since the age of 15. He took piano lessons as a child and even recalls putting on shows with his sister in the living room for their parents.

“I remember one time we did The Phantom of The Opera and we made a chandelier out of paper. At the end, it crashed down on top of us with confetti raining down. We were clever little kids!”

In addition to his role in Eating Out, Chris also contributes a song to the soundtrack—a song with an interesting title.

“I wrote a song a few months ago called ‘Pumpkin Butt.’ It was a song about what an ex-boyfriend used to call me. Don’t worry; it wasn’t supposed to be a literal nickname,” Chris quickly adds. “I showed the song to the director Glenn Gaylord. I thought it would work perfect in the movie. He loved it and helped me rewrite some of the lyrics to fit the movie plot. It is being used as the end credits song. It will be available on iTunes soon! I am really happy with how it turned out.”

So what’s next for this busy hybrid of talent? Chris is currently working on his second album, which he plans to release in early 2010. His film Eating Out: All You Can Eat is due to release in theaters in New York City and San Francisco on October 9 and in Los Angeles on October 16. Be sure to check it out!

Singer R. Kelly Admits He’s Illiterate

R. Kelly has been harboring a secret all these years — he’s illiterate.

The Ignition hitmaker says that despite his musical talents, he can’t read and barely made it through grade school.

“When I was trying to make it out here, I already knew, and I was stubborn about it,” he said. “I don’t even read really and I’m not afraid to say that. My cousins and brothers used to tease me ‘you can’t even read right. How you think you’re going to come up?’

“The only reason I graduated from grammar school is because I had a great jump shot. I went to high school and [my teacher] told me ‘you will one of the greatest writers of all time.’ I believed. You [have to] believe it. You can’t believe [anything] if you’re hating. You can’t achieve [anything] if you’re hating.”

In June last year a Chicago jury found the singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, not guilty of all 14 counts of videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl[33].

Tarantula Attack Leaves Louis-Dreyfus Screaming

Former Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus had a hairy encounter with a killer spider during a recent adventure break in Peru.

The actress and her husband, Brad Hall, decided to check out the ruins of Machu Picchu and rough it in a rainforest as part of a recent wedding anniversary treat - but the South American getaway almost ended in disaster.

Louis-Dreyfus explains, "It was our last night there and I was on edge anyway because there are deadly snakes there and things that can crawl up your urethra and grow in your body.... We were going back to our room... and my husband and I were walking... and I felt something on my leg... We go to our room and we go into the bathroom... and I look over and there's a tarantula... on Brad. It was like one of those Halloween things you'd put on your door - that big.

"I screamed, 'There's a tarantula on your back!', and he ripped his shirt off so fast and so strongly that it ripped in two; he was like The Hulk. The tarantula fell onto the floor and I was screaming... It scared the living c**p outta me.

"The tour guide came in... and said, 'It's a pink-toed male tarantula, and you are so lucky that didn't bite you...' I didn't ask too many questions because I had to go to sleep that night."

Vampire Diaries Gets Hunky New Teacher

Time for the Vampire Diaries kids to hit the history books.

After an exhaustive search, the hit CW show has cast Matt Davis to play history teacher Alaric Saltzman, a fan favorite from the books on which the series is based. The handsome, smart and sexy new history teacher who comes to town knowing a lot more than he's letting on about Mystic Falls' history with vampires. Davis will debut on the November 12 episode. Asked what he was looking for in casting the role, executive producer Kevin Williamson told me a guy who is "hot." He delivered.

You may remember hunky 31-year-old Matt from his roles on ABC's What About Brian and as Reese Witherspoon's beau, Warner, in "Legally Blonde."

It's Lawsuit Time

"Dr. Phil Trapped Me, Touched My Boob"

Dr. Phil is being sued by a woman who claims the TV shrink held her captive inside his production offices, forced her to stare at a naked man -- and then grabbed her left breast.

According to the suit, filed today in L.A. County Superior Court, a woman named Shirley Dieu claims she went to Phil to seek therapy in 2007 -- but instead she claims the doc tried to "brainwash" her and force her to endure all sorts of physical and emotional abuse.

In the docs, Shirley claims Phil forced her to "be in the same room with a completely naked live man while he exposed his entire naked body, genitals and all."

Shirley alleges she tried to escape the building, but "was blocked by the staff to prevent her from leaving."

In the docs, Shirley also claims Phil "touched her left breast during her therapy session."

Shirley also claims Phil lied to her about being a "real" doctor -- alleging that the TV shrink "is not licensed to practice in the state of California."

Shirley doesn't specify how much money she wants from Phil -- but we're assuming it's an insane figure.

I'm calling bullshit, but at the same time, I am appropriately horrified. Can you imagine this man touching your fun bits? Horrifying.

Warcraft Movie Details, Including the New Title.

Warcraft Movie Deets.

Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have updated the IMDB page for the upcoming Warcraft movie. The title now reads Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King and a tentative release of 2011 (likely during the summer). As announced in July, Sam Raimi will be directing the feature film based on the 15-year-old video game franchise.

Right away the subtitle is an obvious reference to the most recent World of Warcraft expansion released in November 2008 titled “Wrath of the Lich King.” It was (and still is) the fastest selling computer game of all time, setting the record at 2.8 million copies in the first 24 hours.

Harry Connick Jr offended by Australian Skit

Harry Connick Jr has made a special guest appearance on a live episode of Australian TV show Hey Hey It’s Saturday - and he was so offended by one of the skits on the program that he told host Daryl Somers, “If I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably – I definitely – wouldn’t have done it.”

Connick Jr appeared on the iconic Australian show, which aired as part two of a reunion special on Wednesday (October 7), to sing a couple of songs and judge ‘Red Faces’, a skewed talent show.

‘Red Faces’ acts are typically silly and goofy, and this episode featured an act Jackson Jive, a parody of the Jackson Five.

It involved a group of six men who danced around with their faces painted black. The group had appeared on the show doing the same skit 20 years earlier, and were performing their act again for as part of the reunion line-up.

Connick Jr sat stony-faced throughout Jackson Jive’s performance and gave them a score of 0 out of 10, commenting that in the United States, the show would have been pulled off the air if such a skit had been played.

Later in the show, host Daryl Somers commented, “I think we may have offended you with that act, and I deeply apologize on behalf of all of us – because I know that to your countrymen, that’s an insult to have a blackface routine like that on the show, so I do apologize.”

Connick Jr, who has appeared on the show several times in the past, responded:

“Thanks Daryl, and I just wanted to say on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that, we take it really to heart,” he said.

“I know it was in good fun, and the last thing I want to do is take this show to a down level – because you know how much I love this show and this country – but I feel like I’m at home here, and if I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably – I definitely wouldn’t have done it.”

He added, “Thank you for the opportunity, I’ve got to give it up because [I spoke to] Daryl at the break, and he said ‘Man, you need to speak up as an American – not as a white American or a black American, but as an American’. [I felt] I needed to say that, so thanks for giving me the opportunity, I appreciate it. You’re a good man for letting me do that.”

The pair seemed to move on, as Somers then presented Connick Jr an ‘honorary cast member’ award in recognition of his contribution to the program over the years.

Hey Hey It’s Saturday was a long-running variety show in Australia that ran for 28 years, from 1971 through to 1999. Channel 9 commissioned a two-episode reunion special that aired September 30 and October 7; due to strong ratings, there is the possibility that the show will return full-time.

KISS gives Boston the biggest SONIC BOOM ever (review from LenaLamoray.com, by DJ Sterling Golden)

KISS Live show review by DJ Sterling Golden

KISS never does anything in moderation. That's not what one expects from the group nicknamed "The Hottest Band In the World". When the KISS ALIVE 35 World Tour recently reached North America after a year and a half of performing to sold-out arenas and stadiums the world over, one had to know it would be one of their biggest, most impressive setups to date. The end result included a massive screen stretching across the wall of the stage like a movie screen that just got outed for steroid use. Said screen was anchored by an endless amount of smaller screens, all neatly wrapped in enough towers of flame and fiery explosions to level a small town.

Last night's show was the 10th time I've seen KISS. Just as they did at my first show in 1992, KISS held the standing-room-only crowd at TD Garden in their collective palm, treating the audience to a two-hour-plus set of hits and history backed by the aforementioned visual presentation. It's what the band is best known for in the live setting, and last night's show certainly reminded everyone why they are the unquestioned kings of the live concert experience.

The Gayest Monsters

Just in time for Halloween, Out magazine did a slideshow of the gayest monsters. It's pretty ridiculous -- but also pretty fun.

It has everyone from The Blob ("He'll swallow anything") to Freddy Krueger ("With his dapper mariner-striped pullover perfectly crisped, his flame-kissed fedora cocked just so, and a set of killer press-on nails, Freddy takes the task of punishing the progeny of Elm Street from ho-hum pedestrian murder to an exercise in sassy, stylish dreamland evisceration") to the "weretwinks" from Twilight: New Moon to Skeletor from the He-Man live action movie:

Earlier this week, a clip of leprechaun Seth Green flipping a table and throwing a toddler-approved freak-out on the set of a commercial magically landed in everyone's inbox. Well, here's a new clip from a parking lot surveillance camera of Seth getting mugged just a couple of hours before. Apparently, this is why he had the angries in a bad way.

Something in the milk ain't clean about this. If you just got mugged in a parking, wouldn't you: a) scream for the cage fighting drag queens of Wales b) wonder why six TMZ cameras weren't on the scene or c) call the police?

Or if you're Seth Green, you bitch out your bodyguard and pull a Teresa Giudice on a table. Makes sense. I still think we need to get Det. La Toya on the case.

Dlisted post of his "freakout"

I read about his alleged flip out last week. what do you guise think because i think its for publicity. then again, if you saw this tiny baby kitten-man carrying some expensive shit, you'd probably jump him too...

From singing lullabies ("He can be crying at the top of his lungs and just turn off like a switch") to frequent bottle-feedings ("I’ve never seen a baby eat like he does!"), the singer (who chose not to address the tragic loss of her family members last October) offers PEOPLE an intimate look into her new life as a mom.

...So You Mad?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This week, R&B singer Usher premiered his lead single ‘Papers’ which directly talks about his impending divorce to estranged wife Tameka Raymond-Foster. He has even stepped up his promotional campaign against his soon-to-be ex-wife by retitling his new album ‘Raymond vs. Raymond’. In the autobiographical track, penned by Sean Garrett, Usher spits: “I damn near lost my mama!”. That line is in reference to Usher sacking his mom due to her dislike of Foster which also caused his mother NOT to attend their wedding. Now that Usher is putting their divorce on blast, this has somewhat ruffled Tameka’s feathers, because she has hired a ghostwriter to neatly criticise artists who sell their soul for a hit on the radio.

The mother of five declares that in regards to such tactics, “desperate times call for desperate measures”. Of course she did not directly address Usher in the post but judging by her choice of words, it is so blatantly obvious that she is disgusted their divorce is being used as a gimmicking ploy. She says genuine acts like Lauryn Hill and Mary J Blige are REAL artists because they do not use gimmicks to sell records. She even targets other singers that indulge shock tactics for attention (“the public should recognize the #FF (fame fanatics) who go to such great lengths to garner attention ranging from publicity ploys, outlandish stage outfits, sex tapes, head shaving, public grand standing, picture leaks and throwing tantrums”).

Sounds amazing as usual, I just wish she would stop using her bff as a stylist. Love her anyway though.

In other Kelly news, here is what she submitted for the Grammys:

Album of the Year : All I Ever Wanted
Best Pop Vocal Album : All I Ever Wanted
Best Pop Vocal Performance : Already Gone
Song of the Year : Already Gone
Record of the Year : Already Gone
Best Short from Music Video : Already Gone

She was so cute when she won her 2 Grammys in 2006 :)

Paramount is letting you decide whether their scary indie film Paranormal Activity gets a nationwide release. They're using the Eventful Web site to create a voting system where anyone can submit a request (aka "a demand") to have the film shown in their area. Paramount says if they get 1 million demands, they'll "open nationwide"!
Over on Entertainment Weekly they're comparing this idea to the brilliant marketing campaign behind another low-budget horror film, The Blair Witch Project, but this one seems more like straight-up marketing to us. Nevertheless, it's kind of fun to make it seem like we have some control over what films we get to see in the theaters.

The vote is already over 600,000 as of this writing, so our guess is you'll get to see Paranormal Activity before Halloween if you want to.

Carey Mulligan Talks 'An Education', Oscar Buzz and 'Wall Street 2' to Moviefone

Chances are you don't yet know the name Carey Mulligan ... well, not unless you a) religiously follow celebrity gossip (she's reportedly dating her 'Wall Street 2' co-star Shia LaBeouf; b) religiously follow film festival news or awards buzz (her new film'An Education' is a Sundance darling and Oscar contender); or c) are Keira Knightley, who Mulligan made her screen debut alongside in 2005's 'Pride & Prejudice' and will reunite with in next year's 'Never Let Me Go.'

You will soon, though -- for any of the reasons above -- but first and foremost, for the raves the 24-year-old Brit is drawing for her performance in the indie drama 'An Education.' Mulligan plays a wise-beyond-her-years teen in early-60s London who falls into a precarious relationship with an older man (Peter Sarsgaard).

Suddenly Mulligan is finding herself alongside Oscar heavyweights like Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank on early awards season prediction lists. We asked her about dealing with all the hype and more in an exclusive interview.

Ladies of NINE on November VOGUE plus new release date

BREAKING: 'Nine' Has Been Moved to December

I just got word that The Weinstein Co. has officially moved Rob Marshall's musical Oscar contender Nine from its currently scheduled release date of November 25 to a limited release on December 18 in New York and Los Angeles and will then go wide on December 25.

The move only makes sense considering Weinstein/Dimension already had The Road hitting theaters on the 25th along with several other releases that have recently crowded the Thanksgiving holiday weekend schedule. Now it will serve as alternative programming on the 18th with Avatar before facing Sherlock Holmes on the 25th.

On top of this news A Single Man has been set for release on December 11 in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco and will also expand on Christmas Day.

Jealously led to David Letterman blackmail drama

It wasn't the $2 million he allegedly asked for that prompted Joe Halderman to allegedly blackmail David Letterman – it was jealousy, according to a source.

In August, Halderman, 51, caught the talk-show host and his then-girlfriend and Letterman's onetime assistant Stephanie Birkitt passionately kissing while in a car in the driveway of the Norwalk, Conn., home Halderman shared with her, a source tells PEOPLE.

Letterman and Birkitt "were seen making out in the driveway in August," the source says. "He drove her home once a week. The interesting thing was he lives in North Salem. Driving her home to Norwalk wasn't exactly the next town."

The PEOPLE source did not confirm a report in the New York Post that Birkitt agreed to end her relationship with Letterman after being caught in flagrante delicto, but did say that "by that time [Halderman] knew she had a sexual relationship with him but was going to stop it."

Shortly after being discovered with Letterman, Birkitt and Halderman broke up, and she moved to Manhattan.

Previous reports had suggested that Letterman, 62, had broken off his relationship with Birkitt, 34, before the birth of his son in 2003. He married his longtime girlfriend, Regina Lasko, in March 2009, and publicly apologized to her on the air after breaking the news of the alleged extortion scheme.

The source would not confirm how recently Letterman and Birkitt had been together romantically.

Vampire Beel hoping for some man-on-man action

Stephen Moyer has talked about the possibility of a gay hook-up between two leading characters on True Blood.

In a recent chat with DS, the British actor, who plays vampire Bill Compton on the HBO series, joked that he is hoping for a bedroom scene with Alexander Skarsgård's Eric Northman.

"Alex is a good friend of mine and a fantastic actor and I love working with Alex and I don't get to do it as much as I would love to," he revealed. "You never know - whether they'll stick Eric and Bill in bed together, I don't know. But here's hoping!"

Moyer, 39, also voiced his approval over the Bill-Sookie-Eric love triangle.

"One thing about great drama is that you can't watch two characters be happy for... well, sometimes half a season is too much. I think there has to be obstacles put in there way. I think the Bill and Eric characters are great."

Project Runway to become a video game (yeah, I don't get it either)

'Runway' poised for vidgame makeover

Atari will help the Weinstein Co. make
"Project Runway" a little more realistic for fans with a videogame version set to bow next year.

Series host Heidi Klum and fashion expert Tim Gunn are expected to be involved in the game, but details are still being worked out. Sponsors that are integrated into the series may also appear in the game.

The licensing deal calls of for a series of "Project Runway" games to be created, with the first to launch on Nintendo's Wii, which will utilize the console's Wii Remote Controller and Balance Board.

First game hits stores shelves next spring.

The game will follow much of the format of the TV show, with players competing as aspiring fashion designers and presented with different challenges as they create designs and outfit models with hair, make-up and accessories. Players can then become the model and strut their creations down the runway using the Wii Balance Board, or take on the role of a fashion photographer and document their designs.

Weinstein Co. co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said the game will allow fans to "actively participate in the program they love by using this new medium as a tool to explore their creativity."

Deal with Atari comes as "Project Runway" is in the midst of airing its sixth season, having moved from Bravo to its new home on Lifetime as part of a five-year pact. Show has already become a hit for the cabler since bowing Aug. 20, viewed by an average of 4.2 million viewers each week.

Atari had been considering creating a fashion game for some time, but in order to launch a successful franchise, wanted to pair up with an established brand in the industry.

"Of all the brand opportunities out there, we thought 'Project Runway' was the leading fashion brand," said Jim Wilson, CEO and president of Atari Inc. "The audience is building, the talent is recognizable. It reaches such a broad audience."

The timing of the game comes as more women, especially tween and teen girls, are turning to videogame consoles for entertainment, with the Wii playing a major role in attracting them.

"The opportunity for a fashion game seems well-timed to where the games market is right now," Wilson said.

Atari isn't the only company with that idea. Developer 505 Games inked a similar licensing pact earlier this year with IMG to build a game around Fashion Week that also bows next year.

Atari, behind the classic franchises "Centipede" and "Missile Command," recently released "Ghostbusters: The Video Game," which has sold over 1 million copies. It will release "Star Trek Online" next year. It has a film based on "Asteroids" in development at Universal.

Minor 'Glee'-tch

Does it matter if show isn't as good as music?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

'Glee," Fox's punchy musical comedy about a high school choir, could have been a hot, campy mess.

Instead, it's generating major buzz for its bright, shiny, astoundingly catchy musical renditions that are every bit the key to the show's popularity.

There have been more than 1.1 million downloads on iTunes of songs featured on "Glee" after its first four episodes, and 10 "Glee" songs currently sit comfortably in the iTunes Top 200. The first volume "Glee" soundtrack is set for release on November 3.

Cast versions of songs like Heart's "Alone" and Queen's "Somebody to Love" are making 70s and 80s music fans nostalgic and weepy all over again.

Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" is enjoying a second renaissance after being featured in the "Sopranos" finale and again in the "Glee" premiere.

More recent hits from Rihanna, Kanye West and Carrie Underwood keep the playlist fresh and relevant.

"Glee" makes the most of its best attribute -- its voices -- by leaking several of its featured songs prior to each episode and selling them on iTunes for mass consumption and personal sing-alongs.

This turns out to be its saving grace, because when you take away the singing and dancing, the plots are plain vanilla and the storylines start to feel like simple filler.

The songs keep you wanting more, in part, because the characters aren't as well-tuned as their voices are.

Unlike "American Idol," a show that is ostensibly about singing but finds its heart in the contestants' personal backstories, "Glee" seems focused solely on performance, and its characters become secondary.

It is well-stocked with typical high school types --Rachel (Lea Michele), the self-absorbed songbird; Finn (Cory Monteith), the jock-turned-glee-club star ("American Pie" anyone?); and Kurt (Chris Colfer), the show-tune loving, fashion-plate-wannabe outsider.

But, while a show that involves people literally breaking into song is hardly realistic, some of the stories have been a real stretch.

The sassy black girl with the voice from heaven (Mercedes, played by Amber Riley) falling for the skinny, Beyonce-worshiping, obviously gay Kurt? Come on.

Or how about the optimistic leader of New Directions, teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), starting a new group called "The Acafellas," which includes both teachers and students, who perform questionable numbers like Bel Biv Devoe's "Poison" and Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex U Up"?

Just last week, Will brought back a dropout from 10 years before (impeccably played by Kristin Chenoweth in a guest role) to invigorate New Directions. No one seemed put off by her sitting in on Will's Spanish class or taking the lead at New Directions' first performance.

Funny? Definitely, but really stretching it.

So if the drama can't keep up with the soundtrack, is "Glee" doomed to die on the vine?

When its songs are selling like hotcakes on iTunes, maybe the lack of a quality storyline allows the show to withstand a few punches in the ratings -- or at least buy it some time to develop some decent plotlines.

this article is criticizing the wrong stuff.  like no mention of that stupid baby plot?  or characters quitting glee like every episode?  or that mercedes, artie and...the asian girl (see? i don't even remember her name!) have done nothing so far?  also why in the preview is rachel complaining about "funk" when it was HER idea to do "push it"!?

and idk who subtitled this article, wtf?

ETA: can't wait for their cover of this.

The Polanski Culture: Hollywood’s Push to Normalize Sex With Children

The vocal, sanctimonious Free-Polanski uproar is merely a symptom of an entertainment culture infected with a moral cancer – a culture that regularly practices up on the screen what we’ve heard them preach this last week on behalf of a confessed child rapist.

Last year Miramax released “Doubt,” a high-profile piece of Oscar-bait starring Academy Award winners’ Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Streep plays a puritanical nun on a moral crusade to expose a Priest (Hoffman) who she believes is sexually abusing a 12 year-old boy. Both characters are portrayed as unsympathetic (especially Streep’s) but in just a couple scenes the boy’s working-class mother (Mrs. Miller, played by Viola Davis) is established as the moral center of the film – the only one truly interested in the welfare of her child. When Mrs. Miller’s informed that her son’s being molested, the Moral Center Of The Film responds that her 12 year-old boy is gay, a social outcast, and beaten regularly by his homophobic father … so maybe the best option for him is a sexual relationship with a forty-something child predator.

Starring Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, and written and directed by Oscar-winner Alan Ball, last year’s “Towelhead” is a film Roman Polanski might have seen many, many times while wearing a rain coat. The protagonist is 13 year-old Jasira (played by the then barely eighteen Summer Bishil) and the story surrounds her sexual abuse at the hands of a number of men, including Eckhart’s Gulf War Vet. Rather than the repeated abuse damaging the young girl, the filmmaker portrays the rapes and molestations as a healthy and sexually liberating experience. More than once the audience is “treated” to lingering shots of Jasira’s bare legs as she discovers the joys of the orgasm while masturbating to photographs of naked women.

Ten Things You Didn't Know About Alex O'Loughlin

You may know that Alex O'Loughlin, the star of CBS' organ-transplant medical drama "Three Rivers" (and the former star of CBS' "Moonlight") is from Australia, but here are a few more things you may not know about this tall, dark leading man.

1. He plays guitar.
"It's a hobby for me, but I'm never alone if there's a guitar there."

2. He can fish (and more).
"I'm a fisherman. I've always loved fishing. I grew up fishing for trout. I'm not the best fly fisherman, but I can fly-fish, because I crack a whip. I learned to crack a whip as a boy, out on the properties. I have skills, mad skills. Also I've been ocean fishing and river fishing."

3. He could try to fix your toilet.
"I worked for a plumber for three months or something, when I was in the tortured teenage years, as a part-time job. It was s***, pardon the pun. It was the worst job ever, so disgusting."

Ay, Caramba! Marge Simpson Gets Nude for Playboy

Who knew Marge Simpson was such a sex kitten?

Sources confirm that the ambiguously aged, iconic cartoon TV mama will appear—naked!—on the November cover of Playboy magazine...

But if naked blue-haired cartoons aren't your forté, don't worry. Marge will not— we repeat, will not—be replacing the usual real-life human Playmate in the issue.

We haven't seen the Marge shots yet, so we cannot tell you if the rug matches the drapes.

NBC cancels Southland

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It's the end of the road for drama "Southland," which has been canceled before the launch of its sophomore season.

Production on the John Wells-produced cop series is being shut down after six episodes.

"Southland," from Warner Bros. TV, was originally slated to debut in its new Friday 9 p.m. time slot during premiere week, but in August, NBC opted to push the start to Oct. 23 and air "Dateline NBC" in the meantime.

"Dateline NBC" will now continue to run in the Friday 9 p.m. hour.

It is not clear when the six produced new episodes of "Southland" will air.

Hawaii Five-O's back! Yay! *sarcasm*

Trio to reboot 'Hawaii Five-O'

Scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who were the kings of the summer B.O. as the screenwriters of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Star Trek," have enlisted on another classic franchise reboot, "Hawaii Five-O," for CBS.

Kurtzman, Orci and Peter Lenkov, an exec producer on CBS' "CSI: NY," will develop the new spin on the vintage cop drama and co-write the pilot. Lenkov will serve as showrunner should the project be picked up to series.

The trio will exec produce for CBS Television Studios. CBS gave the project a pilot commitment on Thursday after a pitch from Kurtzman, Orci and Lenkov.

The Eye has long wanted to revive "Hawaii Five-O," which was a staple of its sked from 1968-80. Skein starred Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett, head of the hardboiled Hawaiian State Police, which handled the toughest criminal cases and investigated organized crime on the island.

The show's catchphrase "Book 'em, Dano" -- which McGarrett often said to his right-hand man, detective Danny Williams (played by James MacArthur) after a suspect was caught -- has become a part of pop culture vernacular.

Original series, created by Leonard Freeman, was filmed on location in Hawaii. Presumably, the redo would also head to the Hawaiian isles to take advantage of tax credits the state offers film and TV productions.

Kurtzman and Orci scored a smallscreen hit last season with Fox's sci-fi drama "Fringe," which they created and exec produce with J.J. Abrams. Their previous credits include ABC's "Alias" and the syndie "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys."

Lenkov has spent the past few seasons on the Eye's "CSI: NY." Other credits include Fox's "24" and CBS drama "The District."

Ben's Chili Bowl Founder Dead at 82

WASHINGTON -- The District of Columbia got some really sad news Thursday morning, as news spread about the passing of the founder of a local institution.
Ben Ali of Ben's Chili Bowl fame died peacefully at about 9 p.m. Wednesday at age 82, a family member told the Washington City Paper.

Ali had been fighting off-and-on health issues. He had recently returned from a cruise with his wife, Virginia, City Paper reported.

The couple was approaching their 51st anniversary.
Alongside a picture of Ali and beneath the caption "June 13, 1927-October 7, 2009," the Ben's Chili Bowl website reads:

"The Ali Family and all of th Ben's Chili Bowl and Ben's Next Door Family want to thank Ben Ali for leading this legacy and allowing us to follow in his dream. We miss you and love you."

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray said the District "has lost a well-respected and iconic figure in the shaping of the historic U Street corridor."

"Through the riots of the 60’s, and neighborhood transformation, Mr. Ali, his wife and sons have kept Ben’s Chili Bowl a thriving business and community meeting place," Gray said. "So much so, that it caught the attention of even President Barack Obama and the nation during his inauguration. Many D.C. residents have enjoyed a chili dog at the U Street establishment and been greeted by the warm reception of the people behind the counter, which emanated from Ben Ali’s spirit and the way he and his family ran the business. In fact, I am a regular patron. Mr. Ali truly will be missed by those of us who appreciated the mark he and Ben’s Chili Bowl have left on the U Street corridor and across the District of Columbia."

"Ben Ali not only established what has become an institution in our town, Ben Ali and his family themselves have become an institution," Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton said in a statement released Thursday. "Ben’s Chili Bowl not only renders a service to the public, but the family is also well-known for its wonderful service to the District of Columbia."

Ben's has been a U Street fixture since the Alis started the restaurant as newlyweds in 1958. Starting with $5,000, they renovated the building at 1213 U St. NW, which was built in 1910 and served as a movie house and pool hall before the Alis began serving their chili on Aug. 22, 1958.

The restaurant's a destination for tourists and residents alike -- as much for its history and celebrity customers as for its delicious chili-smothered half-smokes, dogs, burgers and fries.

Known as Black Broadway, the U Street corridor teamed with legendary African-American entertainers in the '50s and '60s. Ben's website lists the likes of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Nat King Cole, Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory and Bill Cosby as regulars over the years, and their pictures -- along with the pictures of many more celebrities and professional athletes who visited the establishment -- cover the walls.

When the assassination of another famous patron -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- sparked riots in 1968, Ben's stayed open while much of the city shut down.

The Bowl survived U Street's tough times in the '70s. Though business improved in the '80s, Metro drove it away with the construction of the Green Line across the street, but the Alis stayed open with a reduced staff. The restaurant has thrived over the past decade with the revival of the neighborhood.

When Ben and Virginia Ali retired, they left the business in their sons' capable hands. The ever-present line out the door keeps getting longer.

Since Nationals Park opened in 2008, Ben's has been serving baseball fans from several stands at the stadium, including the club level Ben's Chili Nacho Bar. And the day after Christmas, Ben's Next Door opened at 1211 U St. NW, offering more formal dining, a full bar and nine flatscreen TVs.

Another celebrity created a new Ben's buzz in the winter. President Barack Obama joined Mayor Adrian Fenty there for lunch. Then during inauguration week, the line stretched for blocks as Obama fans followed in his footsteps.

No doubt many a loyal customer will pack the restaurant in the coming days and weeks to celebrate Ben Ali's life and work and hoist a half-smoke in his honor.

Eminem The Hermit?

This doesn’t really surprise me much. Eminem has never been known to an on the scene party boy type of celeb. He has constantly bitched about the price of fame and his lack of privacy now. However it has been coming out for some time now that Em is on some serious hermit shit and NEVER leaves the house. The word is that Em only leaves to run errands with his daughters and to the studio. Besides that you can catch him in the crib. This rumor was confirmed by 50 Cent yesterday when he was asked by a radio show
host about Eminem always staying in.

“You could barely get him out the house! I mean you can’t get him out the house for money. I flew down there, I had $15 million for him. I flew down there with a script called ‘Con Rail,’ and I had everybody on deck, they was ready to him $15 million dollars to do the movie. And we was gonna shoot it in Detroit so he could still drop Hailey off and pick her up. That n—- still didn’t want to come outside.

I’m told by people close that this isn’t really a problem as Em is such a star he doesn’t need to always be on the scene for his music to reach people.  It’s just a minor inconvenience and a funny little fact about the white boy. So what he doesn’t leave his house. The shit’s probably bigger than your city’s mall so who would need to leave right?

Trick R Treat sequel

Now that it’s October, we’re all in the mood to get the bejeezus scared out of us. And this year we’re in luck, because the instant cult classic “Trick ‘r Treat” debuted on DVD Tuesday, and its Halloween-themed tales of terror are scaring up some huge business. Naturally, if writer/director Michael Dougherty has his way, he’ll be haunting our All Hallows’ Eve with sequels for years to come.

“Yeah, I have to say that the excitement over the past few months of watching the film grow has started to jumpstart some ideas, and I know how the next one ends,” Dougherty revealed to us this week, saying he’s already brainstorming “Trick ‘r Treat 2” ideas in response to the film’s cult fanbase explosion. “If this [DVD release] does become something, if it catches executives off-guard, it might [get sequels]. I would love to do them.”

Ne-Yo calls Rihanna “liberated”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
After a tough year for the songstress, Rihanna is bursting back onto the music scene with a hot new album, according to her confidante and frequent collaborator Ne-Yo. “It’s definitely more edgy than the way we’re used to seeing Rihanna. Let’s call it 'liberated,'” Ne-Yo told In Touch at an Alfani and GQ-hosted party for his charity, The Compound Foundation, in New York on October 5. The singer and producer, who is penning some tunes for the Barbadian beauty as she hits the recording studio, acknowledges that recent events may have influenced her new style. “It’s possible!” Ne-Yo added. Rihanna, who in a shocking incident suffered a severe beating by then-boyfriend Chris Brown last February, released her last album of fresh material, Good Girl Gone Bad, in the summer of 2007.

Aaron Stanford (X2, The Hills Have Eyes, The Cake Eaters, Traveler) and Robin Tunney (The Craft, Empire Records, Paparazzi, Prison Break, The Mentalist) have a new film coming out to DVD in December. Well. It's not new so much as new-ish. It premiered at Toronto Film Festival in 2005, then got and lost distribution a couple of times before this happened. It's also starring Terry Kinney, Michael Gaston, Zach Savage, and Melissa Leo.

It's available for pre-order at Amazon and the screenwriter/producer has promised signed scripts to the first 500 DVD orders.

There's no trailer yet, but there are five clips up on facebook and myspace.

Snorlax misspells daughter's name

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Jon Gosselin had been gearing up for an all-out battle – and instead found a rare break in the animosity with Kate.

The patriarch of eight saw his twins Mady and Cara for their 9th birthdays at their Pennsylvania home on Thursday without having to cut short the visit as he had originally feared.

"I'm staying until the kids go to bed," he said during a break in the visit. "We're trying to be cordial for Mady and Cara."

Jon, 32, arrived at the celebration with a vanilla cake from New York's upscale Cupcake Café that had his daughter's name misspelled "Maddy" with an extra "d."

The store's Ann Warren says the cake was ordered over the telephone by an entertainment show – she couldn't remember the name, only that it was "Entertainment something" – for Jon to pick up, and that the woman caller spelled out the name.

The woman asked if it would be all right for people to film inside the bakery, and Warren said that would not be a problem. There were paparazzi and camera crews waiting when Jon got there. He looked at different cupcakes, but then Warren brought down the cake she had decorated. Jon seemed genuinely surprised, according to Warren.

The birthday visit marked a brief respite in the war between the reality TV couple now in the midst of a bitter divorce. On Wednesday, Jon had accused Kate of trying to change plans they had worked out to spend the birthday together by insisting that he only spend two hours in the late afternoon and early evening with the kids.

"She's trying to prevent me from seeing my kids on their birthday because she doesn't want to see me," he said, insisting that, because it is still his home, he would stay as long as he wanted.

In other Gosselin news, a court hearing over the couple's financial dispute – on reportedly took $230,000 from a joint account without his wife's permission – was postponed due to the death of the judge's wife, and has not yet been rescheduled, says Jon's lawyer, Mark Heller.

wanda skyes doesn't like weed

Asked about legalizing marijuana on last night's Jay Leno Show, gay comic Wanda Sykes said, "That's nuts. I'm against it. You ever know a pot smoker that keeps a to-do list? You're not going to improve the economy or productivity."

And what exactly will? "If Schwarzenegger wants to spark productivity and make some money, cocaine baby," Sykes joked. "You'll have people working 48 hour shifts. It will be good for the environment - people will be running to work."

Imagine if another comedian said they were opposed to gay marriage, "it's nuts - I'm against it." Surely Sykes, whose "wife" Alex recently had twin girls, wouldn't think that's so funny.

Sykes plays Barb on The New Adventures of Old Christine, appeared on Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Chris Rock Show. and portrayed hooker Biggie Shorty in Pootie Tang.

Hey, stoners - until she retracts her statement about marijuana, boycott Wanda Sykes!
