Why England's Pop Divas Put the USA's to Shame

Cheesy, shameless girls abroad

At a moment of American economic meltdown, it's probably inadvisable—maybe even traitorous!—to advocate for the increased import of foreign goods. ("Buy American," commanded the headline of a recent New York Times op-ed by Warren Buffett, a man whose knowledge of finance equals mine regarding The Hills.) But listen: When the Pussycat Dolls are churning out crap as witless and charm-free as this year's Doll Domination, a lifelong lady-pop fan's got no choice but to globalize—especially now that Girls Aloud's terrific new Out of Control is calling out for his recession-ravaged dollar.

Girls Aloud star lands TV drama role

Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding has landed a role in a television drama due to be broadcast on BBC.

According to The Sun, the singer will play the beautician girlfriend of a London banker in 'Freefall', a drama about the credit crunch.

Dominic Savage, who wrote 'Freefall', said: "This is a film essentially about greed that in many ways has got out of control.

"It is a film that reflects our obsession with wanting more, wanting everything, the desire in many of us to gain the world, but in doing so, potentially lose our souls."

Harding said: "Dominic Savage's films are all about improvisation, which is pretty challenging, but that's also a big reason why I want to do the project. It's so different to what I'm used to."

all i'm worried about is if they're coming to america, more specifically florida.

In a new interview with the Times Online, Angelina Jolie says that she wasn't sure she would "ever be comfortable" with getting pregnant. "I just thought there were so many children in the world I never felt I needed to create a life," she explains. Ultimately, it was Brad who got her to see things in a different light, however.

"I was thinking of only adoptive children, but he saw a big family mixed with adoptive and born children. And I ended up falling in love with a man who I think was destined to have children and suddenly one day it felt right and there it was."

The Jolie-Pitt family, with Maddox Chivan, 7, Pax Thien, 5, Zahara Marley, 3 ½, Shiloh Nouvel, 2, and 3 ½-month-old twins Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline, view the word 'adoption' as something to celebrate, and not shy away from. "We talk about orphanages, we talk about their countries and differences, and it's a source of excitement and pride," Angelina says.

"I've heard Maddox explain to Zahara when they are talking about pregnancy, 'No, Zee, remember, you were in that nice African woman's belly. I was in that nice Cambodian woman.'"

Rachel Evan Wood denies dating Mickey Rourke

Gossip Web sites are abuzz with sightings of the newly single Evan Rachel Wood and Mickey Rourke, her much older costar in The Wrestler. But the actress – who split from rocker Marilyn Manson last month – wants the world to know that they're just friends.

"Spread the word – I'm not dating Mickey Rourke," Wood told PEOPLE at Sunday's Hollywood Life 3rd annual Behind the Camera Awards in Hollywood. "Everybody thinks we're dating and we're not."

That's a sentiment the 21-year-old actress reiterated in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE: "Mickey and I bonded while shooting The Wrestler and we became friends, but nothing more. I guess, because of my recent break up, I will be linked to many people, but I am not interested in pursuing a relationship at this point in my life. Any such rumor should not be taken seriously."

She continued, "We are proud of the film we made together and I hope people will focus on the film and not get distracted by any nonsense."

Rourke, 56, also denied the so-called romance. When asked Saturday if they two had begun dating, he told PEOPLE, "No, no. I'm a big fan of hers and she's a big fan of mine." (Although the costars – along with the rest of The Wrestler cast – were in Las Vegas Saturday, Wood did not join Rourke at Tao's three-year anniversary party.)

Rumor Control

It's been a tough few days of rumor control for Wood, who, on Friday, also refuted gossip surrounding her breakup.

"Manson and I both decided to take some time apart so we could concentrate on work," the actress told PEOPLE at the time, addressing stories that they'd fought bitterly about her brother. "Someone used that opportunity to kick us while we were down and sell a completely false story."

On Sunday, Wood insisted she's coping well with the split.

"It's not the nasty thing everybody thinks it is. I'm doing fine, as best as can be expected ...," she said. "Right now, I'm just enjoying being on my own."

Patty Duke says she owes her life to sons

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Oscar winner PATTY DUKE owes her life to sons SEAN and MACKENZIE - because they stopped her from committing suicide when they were young children.

The Miracle Worker star was battling manic depression and a bipolar disorder when her sons were four and six when she opted to end her life in the bathroom of the family home.

Duke tells America's Globe publication, "I remember them banging on the bathroom door begging me not to kill myself."

And now her desperate days seem to be behind her, the 61-year-old actress is relieved Lord of The Rings star Sean Astin and his brother have forgiven their mum for their troubled youths.

She adds, "After I got help, my kids were generous enough to make amends with me. Luckily they forgive me, but I did really bad things. I would turn on them and scream at them and there was some physical abuse as well."

Best Kept Hollywood Secrets

I'm sure most of these are not so "secret" anymore, but I confess the Jack Nicholson one was a surprise.
The only one I would like to add is that I have heard rumors several times that Beyonce requires a vocal coach for her acting gigs because her natural way of speaking is very "street" ie has a hard time saying certain words like "ask" I think the Andie McDowell voice replacement is hilarious as she always strikes me as having the worst acting voice around. I cringe when I hear her.

YouTube to Stream Full-Length MGM Movies

YouTube took its first step towards a comprehensive movie service, reaching a deal today with a big Hollywood studio to start showing full-length television shows and films.

The video-sharing website is set to announce that it will host TV episodes and movies from the archives of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in its latest step to boost advertising revenue.

The deal is expected to be the first of many. It emerged over the weekend that the site, which is owned by Google, was in negotiations with other Hollywood studios. One report from the CNET news website suggested a YouTube movie service could be available within 90 days.

MGM will post videos from full-length action movies such as Bulletproof Monk and The Magnificent Seven, and its decades-old American Gladiators programme. They will be free to watch, with advertising running alongside the video.

Sources said, that the service will be available only in the US and that British users are unlikely to have access to the content for the foreseeable future.

In October, YouTube forged a similar partnership with CBS, the American TV network, to run full-length archived shows, including Star Trek and Beverly Hills 90210.

Many TV networks already run short clips on YouTube, which also offers millions of home videos uploaded by users.

The new partnerships put YouTube in more direct competition with Hulu, the online video site owned by News Corp – parent company of Times Online - and General Electric's NBC Universal.

Hulu features full-length shows from Fox (also owned by News Corporation), NBC and CBS. It also has a YouTube channel which features shorter clips from its shows.

Taylor Swift arrives at NYC hotel and blogs

Taylor Swift arrives at her downtown Manhattan hotel on Sunday night in New York City. The 18-year-old country music star couldn’t sleep last night because her new album, Fearless, drops in stores at midnight tonight. Taylor just blogged an entry titled “And it all comes down to this.” Here’s what it says:

Hey guys! I should be sleeping, because I have to get up in a few hours to go to Good Morning America tomorrow– but I can’t. I can’t stop thinking about the fact that in less than 24 HOURS, the new album is going to be out. It’s crazy to think about, because this is literally everything I’ve thought about for the past two years. I’ve been wanting you to hear these new songs since the very moment of their creation. Every single song has a face attached. They’re all about people. Some even mention names. But most importantly, these songs tell my stories.

“These songs tell the story of my freshmen year of high school, and the day I met [my BFF] Abigail. They tell the story of the guy who apologized over and over again without ever meaning it. The story about saying goodbye to someone when you don’t want to, because you can’t breathe without them. The story of the boy who never realized he was with the wrong girl, and that the right one was right there in front of him. The story of my childhood, and the moment I realized my mom was the best friend I’ll ever have. The memories of running and laughing and having the best days with her.

Keri Hilson knows exactly what to do in the bedroom:

For a woman to feel her best, her man has to support her.” A statement Hilson says goes both ways, even in the bedroom. “Sometimes you have to feed the male ego.” “Men think they know when we’re faking it, but they have no idea. I know girls who are really good at it, and the men have no clue.”

There’s no blaming Keri or any other ladies for faking it sometimes. If the new episode of Desperate Housewives is coming on in 15 minutes and your bust-it-boy needs his “medicine,” you really don’t have any other options.

All-American Rejects played two shows in Orlando, FL this weekend but I guess on their final night they fancied themselves actual high rolling rockstars. According to my friend who was at the show they band went to the bar T-Rex at Downtown Disney and racked up a $600 tab (lol drinks were on them) and then walked out.

The band was promptly arrested for this by Orlando police. Guess they aren't rockstars after all.

I've been trying to find an article or something but it makes sense, apparently they were high in Atlanta last week too but I can't find the funny youtube of them making asses out of themselves. I dislike these guys so much, they're such douchebags I'm glad they got arrested.

Britney Spears rushes son to hospital

Panic as Britney Spears rushes her toddler son to hospital following 'seizure'

Britney Spears rushed her two-year-old son to hospital after he suffered a suspected seizure during a family trip to her hometown. Jayden James was raced to the emergency ward after lapsing into a 'vague and unresponsive' state. The toddler fell ill yesterday afternoon at the family home in Kentwood, Louisiana. The entire Spears clan made the 25-mile dash to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Centre, Mississippi. Doctors were unable to pinpoint the problem straight away and kept the toddler in for overnight observation. Distraught Britney, 26, refused to leave his side and asked for a bed next to him in the ward. Her ex-husband, rapper Kevin Federline, is now believed to be making plans to jet out of Los Angeles to be at Jayden's bedside. It's the first time Britney has been allowed to leave California with sons Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden since their dad K-Fed was given full custody in July. She flew them into Louisiana on a private jet with her dad Jamie on Friday, the morning after her surprise appearance onstage with Madonna in Los Angeles. The special week-long visit was to steal some family time ahead of Britney's forthcoming promotional tour of her new album 'Circus'. She was also anxious to be reunited with her little sister Jamie-Lynn, 17, who recently gave birth to daughter Maddie-Briann

Sources say chaos erupted when Jayden suffered a suspected seizure out of the blue, at about 3pm yesterday. 'One minute Britney and her sons were relaxing and enjoying their first visit to Kentwood in months, and the next minute Jayden had fallen ill,' said a source. 'He was vague and unresponsive so Britney dialled an ambulance.  But she was told it would take half an hour to arrive, and she was best trying to get Jayden to the hospital herself.' Minutes later, two cars tore out of the Spears' 'Serenity' residence.

The first, a Lincoln Navigator, carried Britney, her mum Lynne and dad Jamie as well as the poorly toddler.  A Range Rover driven by Jamie-Lynn also carried their brother Brian. When the convoy reached the motorway, Jamie-Lynn reportedly thwarted following photographers by refusing to let them pass. She drove slowly alongside another vehicle to keep them back while her sister accelerated away. When snappers arrived at the hospital, which is now being manned by police, Britney and her son had already dashed inside. 'Jayden James had to be kept in hospital overnight for observations,' said the source.  'We don't yet know what's wrong with him. 'Britney was insistent that wouldn't leave him. She asked for a bed to be made up in the same room so she could be there at his side.'

Lindsay Lohan Says She's 'Different' and 'Happy Now'

Lindsay Lohan may have experienced growing pains going in and out of rehab last year, but the newly grounded actress admits to regaining control of herself and being happy with her life.

"I'm a different person now," Lohan tells Harper's Bazaar for its December issue. "I'm happy."

The road to happiness has been a long one for Lohan. Before entering treatment centers at Cirque Lodge and Promises for DUI and possession of drugs, Lohan, 22, admits feeling lonely. "I was going to clubs all the time and it was not okay. I was so alone."

But she has taken responsibility for her downward spiral and ready to move forward. "I did it to myself and I have to deal with the consequences. I'm thankful for what I can take out of it. Now I feel clear," she says.

Not a Lesbian

Having a clear head and a growing relationship with deejay Samantha Ronson is one aspect that Lohan can rely on in becoming her new self.

"She's a wonderful person and I love her very much," said Lohan.

Though the two have not commented publicly on the exact nature of their relationship, the Mean Girls star admits to labeling herself as a bisexual and answers "no" to being a lesbian. "I don't want to classify myself," she says.

"I feel like it jinxes it,” she quips. "It's hard. The second I start talking about whomever I'm seeing, a month or two later it's failed."

And will Lohan hear wedding bells in the future? "Eventually," she said. But whether that will be with a man or a woman, "I don't know."

Unexpected Crowd at Stonestown

Police in San Francisco had to struggle to control a crowd of around 3,000 people who gathered at San Francisco's Stonestown Galleria Monday morning for the chance to see an actor who is very popular among the teenage set.

Police were forced to cancel the event, after the crowds grew out of control.

Teenagers, and their families had come from as far as Hawaii, Los Angeles and Arizona hoping to get a glimpse of Robert Pattinson, the 22-year-old British actor who played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. He now stars in “Twilight,” a vampire movie that is based on a very popular young adult book.

Around 200 to 500 people were expected to line up this morning to buy a wristband when the mall opened, that would allow them back inside the mall at 6 p.m. for a t-shirt signing at the Hot Topic store. Thousands showed up.

”After I got trampled I got back up there, but it was really scary cause I couldn’t breathe, because everyone kept pushing,” said fan Erica Martin.

One girl reportedly had her nose broken as a result of being crushed up against the front doors to the mall.  Another girl fainted because she was unable to breathe while being pressed by the crowd.

The line to get into the front of the mall stretched all the way around the block.

Christina Aguilera is one proud bitch!

Christina Aguilera is closing the year looking forward and looking back. As she prepares to release her first greatest hits package, the singer is planning a new album she describes as “futuristic,” with collaborations with the forward-looking Sia, Goldfrapp and Ladytron. “There’s no holds barred for anything,” Aguilera says. “It’s really the future and can go anywhere. It’s exciting to challenge myself in that way and explore.”

She expects to enter the studio in January with Sia, the eclectic Australian pop singer and sometime collaborator with the atmospheric group Zero 7. “Her voice has a really cool sound to it. It’s really gritty and unique,” says Aguilera. “I’m not exactly sure what we’re going to get when we go into a studio together. There’s probably magic to be had.”

Until then, fans can hear two new Aguilera songs on Keeps Gettin’ Better — A Decade of Hits, which is being released exclusively through Target stores and The new tracks — “Keeps Gettin’ Better” and “Dynamite” — are joined by updated re-recordings of the hits “Genie in a Bottle” and an electronic-flavored “Beautiful.” It marks a dramatic shift from 2006’s retro Back to Basics album, which focused on more of a blues, jazz, and soul vibe.

“I feel fortunate enough at 27 years old to be release a greatest hits record, and I’m very proud of the work that I’ve been able to do, and all the changes that I’ve made both visually and musically over the years,” Aguilera says, noting that she’s still “not really able to wrap my head around it. I’ve just begun my career.”

She has also kept busy with a new baby and involvement with Rock the Vote, which featured a get-out-the-vote PSA with Aguilera and her son, Max, swaddled in an American flag. But her career remains in full-swing, without apology. In the song “Keeps Gettin’ Better,” she openly refers to herself as both a “super-girl” and a “super-bitch.”

“I’m running a business,” she says, “and sometimes being the boss of your own empire and creation, you have to be assertive. Being a female, that comes with being labeled a ‘bitch’ and given titles that men wouldn’t receive. But if that’s what I’m going to be called by being assertive and knowing who I am and what I want out of life, so be it. I wear that label proudly.”

Isaiah Washington Calls Grey's "Disgusting" for Firing Brooke Smith

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Isaiah Washington slams "Grey's" over Dr. Hahn, says "Bring Burke Back"

Former Grey's Anatomy star Isaiah Washington -- who was axed from the show in 2007 after spewing a homophobic slur at T.R. Knight -- is slamming the show for firing Brooke Smith.
"I looked at a brilliant actress, whom I have adored since I first saw her in Silence of the Lambs," he says in the Nov. 17 issue of TV Guide. "For her to be treated this way, I find very interesting."

Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes released a statement last week insisting that "Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian .... we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run."
Regardless, Washington says the move was harsh.

"The fact is that, just before the holidays, you have a mother, a wonderful actress removed from a steady income without the proper reasoning behind it..." he says. "You look at the way another consummate professional [is] being treated because her character, her story line [has] potentially made producers uncomfortable."

He says Rhimes is getting the raw deal.

"Now that I see what they're doing to a show that I love and I care about, I think it's disgusting," Washington continues. "The fact that Shonda has been put in this position is extremely unfair.

"It's unfortunate because it was probably, at the time, the most progressive show on television," he says. "Now I see it [being] systematically torn apart."

How can the show be fixed?

"Bring Burke back!" Washington says.

So he would return to the show, despite all the drama? "Absolutely!" SOURCE

I have to admit that the show went in the crapper once Dr. Burke left.

Zombie expert Simon Pegg with a few things to say on those undead bastards...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As an avid horror fan, I found the prospect of last week's five-night TV zombie spectacular rather exciting. Admittedly, the trailer for E4's Dead Set made me somewhat uneasy. The sight of newsreader Krishnan Guru-Murthy warning the populace of an impending zombie apocalypse induced a sickening sense of indignation. Only five years previously, Edgar Wright and I had hired Krishnan to do the very same thing in our own zombie opus, Shaun of the Dead. It was a bit like seeing an ex-lover walking down the street pushing a pram. Of course, this was a knee-jerk reaction. It's not as if Edgar and I hadn't already pushed someone else's baby up the cultural high street - but that, to some extent, was the point. In Shaun of the Dead, we lifted the mythology established by George A Romero in his 1968 film Night of the Living Dead and offset it against the conventions of a romantic comedy.

Mel B and Stephen renew vows for kids

When Spice Girl Melanie "Scary Spice" Brown and husband Stephen Belafonte made the decision to be wed in a secret Las Vegas ceremony in June 2007, it meant that several of their close friends and family weren't on hand for the blessed event.

So now the couple is making up for it — They renewed their wedding vows over the weekend and flew their closest family and friends to Hurghada, Egypt, for the ceremony.

Mel and Stephen reaffirmed their commitment to each other at the exclusive Jaz Makadi Golf Hotel in Madinat Makadi, in front of guests including Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding, and UK TV personalities Denise Van Outen and Fearne Cotton.

Missing from the ceremony were Mel's fellow Spice Girls — Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and pregnant Melanie C — who she explains weren't invited to the ceremony in order to keep it a low-key event.

"We decided to do it for the kids and we only want it to be a real intimate affair with the 10 closest people in our lives," she explained.

The former Spice Girls star - who has a luxury home in Egypt - will also host a lavish wedding blessing party today, treating guests to a picturesque Red Sea cruise.

Mel and Stephen were seen soaking up the sun shortly before their renewal ceremony yesterday.

The loved-up pair sipped champagne and kissed as Mel showed off her fantastic figure in a skimpy white bikini.

Jack Mackenroth & Jaslene Gonzalez  @ the 2008 NYC Chocolate Show

From his blog:

Last night was the fabulous chocolate fashion show which launched the 11th annual Chocolate Show in NYC. The theme this year was super heroes. There were about 20 designers who were paired with pastry chefs and chocolatiers from around the state. I worked with pastry chef Zac Young from Butter. He was dead set on doing Wonder Woman and since it was one of my favorite shows as a kid it wasn’t a hard sell. What mini-gay didn’t want to be Lynda Carter in the 70’s? Please. I’ve been practicing my Wonder Woman transformation spin since I was 3.

The assignment was to create a superhero costume out of chocolate, which I soon found was much easier said than done. I’m all about going big with runway designs so I wanted a FIERCE model. I immediately though of Jaslene Gonzalez from America’s Next Top Model because I knew she would work the runway and she sort of embodies Wonder Woman 2008. And HONEY–she did not disappoint. More on that in a sec.

Diego Luna's Son Is 'One Thing that Matters'

For Diego Luna, becoming a dad has simplified his life.

"Well, it's just everything is easier now," the Mexican-born actor says of his 11-week-old baby boy, Jeronimo, Saturday while promoting his new drama, Milk, in Beverly Hills. "There is just one reason for you to be here. It's to make sure someone else is happy, and [he] has everything he needs. It's as simple as that."

Plus, Luna, 28, adds, Jeronimo is "the only guy who is not judging me now."

In Milk, Luna's character Jack Lira falls in love with Sean Penn's 1970s gay rights champion Harvey Milk. A performance his wife, Camila Sodi enjoyed, Luna tells PEOPLE.

"She laughed a lot about it," he says, adding that Camila has been spending time at home, "taking care of the baby."

"I'm here just talking about a film – it's just a film – everything now is just what it is," he says. "It can't be so important. Now, there's just one thing that really matters. It's a different kind of love that you didn't know existed. It makes everything easier really."

Awww. I can't believe his wife/mother of his child is only 22. That could've been me.

Baby from Nirvana's Nevermind Re-Creates Album Cover

Spencer Elden, the baby on the cover of Nirvana's Nevermind, has re-created the cover. He's wearing a bathing suit this time.

More than 17 years ago, when he was still an infant, Spencer Elden's parents dropped him into a swimming pool in California, where underwater photographer Kirk Weddle was waiting to snap an entire roll of film of the naked, buoyant baby. The picture was later used as the cover image for Nevermind, the second studio LP from a little rock band out of Seattle called Nirvana.

Now, 17-year-old Elden is a high school student, who told MTV News last year that "it's kind of creepy [to think] that that many people have seen me naked — I feel like I'm the world's biggest porn star."

But John Kiernan, who occupies Neil Young’s former Winnipeg home on Grosvenor Avenue, never imagined another famous musician would show up at his door.

Kiernan told CBC News on Monday that he was looking out the window a week ago Sunday and saw his wife talking with two strangers on the front lawn.

“And I'm looking around, and I realize, this guy having a tuque on has really great boots on, these sort of cowboy, motorcycle boots. And he was wearing really nice leather pants. And I realize I'm staring face-to-face with Bob Dylan.”

After the music legend and his manager were invited into the house, Dylan asked a lot of thoughtful questions, including about Neil Young's old bedroom.

“OK, so this was his view, and this was where he listened to his music. It suddenly dawned on me, when you're looking at Bob Dylan standing in a hallway, that he had a very parallel experience 200 miles to the south, sitting in his room, listening to his music, looking out his window.”

Dylan grew up in Hibbing, Minn., about 500 km southeast of Winnipeg, while Neil Young spent his formative high school years playing in Winnipeg rock band The Squires.

Kiernan said Dylan and his manager visited for a while before heading off to tour other areas of the city.

Dylan then played a concert at Winnipeg's MTS Centre later that night, Nov. 2.

idk i thought that was pretty cool :/

I guess he's glad Prop 8 passed

Mickey Rourke got downright homophobic outside Hyde last night when he used a gay slur to verbally attack someone on camera, threatending to break his fucking neck for writing that Mickey was dating a girl he was not dating. You can see the video at the source.

In an interview with Time Out New York back in '06, he was quoted as saying he's not afraid to use the word and if "somebody has a problem with that, they can kiss my f**kin' ass."

Leonardo DiCaprio on Akira and Ninja Scroll, not starring in either

While most of Hollywood seems to be focusing on comics made stateside — with even French publishers getting some attention lately — Leonardo DiCaprio has clearly set his sights on the Far East.

Already reported here on Splash Page, DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company has been picking up classic heavy-hitters from the world of Japanese manga and anime — most notably “Akira” and “Ninja Scroll” — to develop into live-action feature films. While the news of “Ninja Scroll” is still fresh on the blogs, “Akira” has already made some moves in Hollywood, being picked up by Warner Bros., scooping up Gary Whitta to write the script, and there’s even rumors that Joseph Gordon Levitt will play the role of Tetsuo.

“We’re waiting for the final draft of the script [for 'Akira'],” DiCaprio told MTV. “I’m a big fan of Japanese anime — that and another project called ‘Ninja Scroll’ we’re trying to get developed and made into a movie, and I know there a lot of loyal fans out there of the project and die-hard fans, so we’re going to try to do the best job we possibly can and we’re not going to make the movie until the script is in the right shape.”

However, for those of you out there hoping to see DiCaprio on Kaneda’s souped up motorcycle in “Akira” or munching on rice balls a la Jubei Kibagami in “Ninja Scroll,” don’t hold your breath. When asked about what his role will be in these properties, DiCaprio made it clear that he’d be producing, and as for as any interest in acting: “No, not really,” he responded.

tegan and sara blog on prop 8

This past week has been full of ups and downs for me. I'm sad I left "Rage" for this essay, mainly because I think what we really need right now is to embody the courage, calm and focus that Barack Obama used in becoming President Elect. He endured ridiculous circumstances and ignorance with dignity. He never complained. He never cried. He never seemed angry enough to smack John McCain in their debates. I would have. I could never be president. I would definitely let my rage spill out. I did. Every time I heard "my friends," I would swear and sweat and seethe. But Obama didn't do that. He just smiled and looked into our eyes all across America and beyond, assuring us he would, he could. And he did.

If this essay were about crying I would write about how sorry I am for all the same sex couples (numbering nearly 20,000) who got married in California this past summer, and whose relationships now hang in the balance, waiting to find out if their nuptials are null and void.

I would tell you how sorry I am for those who got engaged in hopes that they would be able to get married but now cannot.

I would write about how my eyes welled up and the tears spilled out of me on election night, when the Proposition 8 "Yes" votes outnumbered the "No" votes in California.

I would write about how angry and frustrated I felt, standing outside the gates protecting the Mormon Church on Sunset Blvd, wondering who and what could protect our rights.

I have been living in Montreal for six years. Montreal -- and Canada in general -- has the reputation for being a more lenient, understanding and open-minded country. Although I am grateful for the legislation that has made me "equal" in the eyes of the law, you cannot legislate away people's disgust or ignorance. You can't remove the stinging intolerance and slurs of homophobic audience members' words in my ears. For any minority, this seems to come with the territory. What helps me hold my head above water is the understanding that I am legally equal in the eyes of my country. I pay taxes, I obey the law, and I respect my place in the community and strive to be successful in it. I want to be inspiring, a role model. I am fueled by the idea that my life as a message dismantles the public's image of gay people as sexual deviants, as less than, as being abnormal.

Ausiello reports: Tori Spelling Returns to Smallville!

Color me gobsmacked: Tori Spelling is appearing on a CW show, and it's not 90210. At least not yet anyway. (More on that in a sec.)

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Spelling has finalized a deal to return to Smallville as The Daily Planet's incredibly liquefying gossip columnist Linda Lake. The camptastic character, first introduced in a Jan. '07 episode, is unique among Smallville's long line of villains in one very significant way: She knows Clark's secret.

Now for the other piece of this story: My Peach Pit mole confirms that after numerous false starts, Spelling is once again engaged in "preliminary talks" to reprise her role as everyone's favorite ex-virgin, Donna Martin, on 90210: New Flavor.

As you'll recall, Aaron's little girl was all set to head back to her former zip code earlier in the season, but she backed out in an alleged dispute over moolah. Or was it because she just had a baby? Depends who you ask!

If the 90210 deal materializes, and that's still a big if, I'm told Spelling would likely show up in the spring. Her one-episode Smallville return, meanwhile, is set in stone for early '09.

What say you, Smallville fans? Excited to see Clark's liquid nightmare back? Are you, like me, hoping it's a precursor to a 90210 return later in the season? The comments section awaits your feedback!

Things are getting weird for Robert Pattinson.

But considering he's starring as high school vampire Edward Cullen in the movie adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling young adult novel, Twilight, that's probably to be expected.

Still, just last week the 22-year-old British actor was at an Apple store in New York City when a 7-year-old girl asked to take a photo with him. No big deal, right?

“But then she went really quiet and she was like, 'Can you bite me?' ” Pattinson told me with a somewhat nervous laugh yesterday in a Beverly Wilshire Hotel room, where he’d been holed up doing press all weekend. “It wasn’t a joke...I looked at her and thought, 'Do you know what you’re saying?' There are these kinds of sexual thoughts that come out of people that they don’t even know are sexual.”

And to think the movie doesn’t even hit theaters until Nov. 21.

Pattinson insists he never actually thought he’d be cast as the mysterious and potentially dangerous vampire who falls in love with the new girl in town, Bella Swan (Into the Wild’s Kristen Stewart).

“I was embarrassed going into the casting because in the character breakdown, the first line is, 'Edward is the ideal perfect man,’ ” he said. “I literally put it off for five months and then I went in mainly because I had seen Into the Wild and I wanted to meet Kristen because I thought she was cool. But I felt like an idiot being like, “Hi, I’m here for the ideal man audition.“ (LOL)

And it only got worse from there. He had to take his shirt off for director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) because Edward’s perfection includes a six-pack, something Pattinson didn’t have at the time.

But once he landed the role, he decided it was time to get fit. He began a two-month daily regimen that included three hours of kickboxing and at least two hours of running. He not only gave up beer but he also limited his meals to just one a day.

“I was just trying to lose like every ounce of body fat so when I took off my shirt, I would look like an alien,” Pattinson said, presumably meaning a hot alien. “I thought that kind of worked for the story. The idea of taking my shirt off and looking like some sort of Adonis? Everyone would just laugh.”

But then things went slightly awry. Two weeks before shooting, Hardwicke told him the shirtless scenes were being tossed because he had gone too far. He'd lost 30 pounds since the last time she had seen him. “I just looked so different,” he said. “I was so much more muscular than I had ever been in my life, but I looked weird.”

Hardwicke eventually relented and did shoot a shirtless scene or two, but Pattinson's stomach ended up on the cutting room floor because by that time, he said, “I was on a full cheeseburger diet.”

Pattinson and his costars take off this week for a six-city promotional tour around the U.S. Then it’s off to Australia. "I haven't really had time to reflect on it," Pattinson said. "It's pretty nuts. It doesn't seem very real at all. I just go to these different cities and people start screaming."

With Twilight being the first in Meyer’s four-part series, a sequel is likely. However, an official decision won’t be made until studio execs see box-office numbers. But Pattinson is confident they’ll be back for more. “I have ideas already about the second one,” he said. “I’m looking forward to doing a saga.”

Season 2 done, work on Season 3 to start in May!

“So, we got some news this AM. Keep in mind, this could very well change. At any moment. But as of now, we are ‘going down for the season’. Which means that they are planning on starting us back in May for Season 3.

What that means is that Season 2 will only be 13 episodes. When Pushing Daisies ends production on the 13th episode of the season 2, they will be done until May, when they will start production on Season 3. While this is great news, we still need to let ABC know, now more than ever, that we can’t live without this show!"

Candice Michelle to star on Disney Channel

Parents Television Council, on guard! Disney Channel has seemingly recruited former Women’s Champion, softcore porn star and Playboy covergirl Candice to appear on one of their shows. Unfortunately though, Candice won’t be “laying the SmackDown” on that pesky little brat, Miley Cyrus but will be appearing on Wizards of Waverly Place a series starring rising Disney star, Selena Gomez. The episode airs on January 4th, 2009.

No word yet on what the episode will be about or why did Disney decide to use a former playboy covergirl but its all set and she will appear on the wizard show alongside Selena Gomez.

What do you think ONTD, will this cause them to lose ratings and fans or is this all a plot to get Selena to pose on the cover once she turns 18 along side Destiny Hope?

If someone were to simply show the PTC a clip of Candice’s entrance, I think that’s all they need to see to revolt against Disney!

Heidi and Spencer to Guest Star on How I Met Your Mother

They've conquered reality TV and filmed music videos together. Now Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt will try their hands at comedy.

Montag, 22, and Pratt, 25, will guest star on an episode of the CBS sitcom How I Met York Mother that will air in January. Both will film their segments this week.

"We can confirm that Heidi and Spencer will appear on the show," co-creator and executive producer Craig Thomas tells PEOPLE, "but we can't give away anything specific about the episode. All we can say is that they play themselves, and one of them is The Mother."

Montag and Spencer join an impressive line of guest stars on How I Met Your Mother, including Britney Spears, James Van Der Beek, Heidi Klum, and Mandy Moore.

"By cellphone from Bulgaria, he said: "There's sort of a rumor around that I'm maybe thinking about running to be governor of New Mexico? Well, it's sort of true. It's been my home 25 years. I really love my state. Poor, hardworking, decent people - Native Americans, carpenters, artists, expats mixed in with hundreds of the world's smartest physicists at Los Alamos. They refuse to admit they are sharing more than just a stage on their Australian tour but superstar couple Rihanna and Chris Brown were hand-in-hand - and even hand-on-thigh - while out shopping yesterday.

Making a rare public appearance, the pop singers headed to the Diesel store in Paddington for a second spree, after spending up big on the label in Melbourne last week.

While Brown picked up some underwear and a risque hot pink jacket, his Good Girl Gone Bad preferred jeans, perfume and a tracksuit.

Although reportedly shunning fans from taking photos, staff said the two were “lovely” and that Brown was picking items for the Umbrella singer to try on.

Thewlis Read About Evil To Play Nazi

Actor David Thewlis prepared to play a concentration camp commander in his latest movie by reading the memoirs of a real life Nazi.

The Harry Potter actor struggled to understand how his character in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas could be so evil, until he immersed himself in the writings of Rudolf Hoffs, who ruled at Poland's notorious Auschwitz camp, where as many as 1.1 million Jews [and others] were murdered.

Thewlis reveals, "(I prepared) by believing such a man could exist, which I arrived at through reading the memoirs of Rudolf Höss, a commander at Auschwitz, who was ordered to write his autobiography in between his trial and execution. It's an amazing insight into the mind of a man such as I'm playing."

Did anyone else see this? It's quite well-done, but holy shit, I will NEVER get over what happened at the end.

South African singer Miriam Makeba dies in Italy

Miriam Makeba, the South African singer who wooed the world with her sultry voice but was banned from her own country for 30 years under apartheid, died early Monday after a concert in Italy. She was 76.

The Pineta Grande Clinic, a private clinic near the southern city of Naples, said the singer died after being brought there. The ANSA news agency reported that Makeba apparently suffered a heart attack after performing for 30 minutes at a concert against organized crime.

The death of "Mama Afrika," as she was known, plunged South Africa into shock and mourning.

"One of the greatest songstresses of our time has ceased to sing," Foreign Affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said in a statement.
"Throughout her life, Mama Makeba communicated a positive message to the world about the struggle of the people of South Africa and the certainty of victory over the dark forces of apartheid and colonialism through the art of song."

Makeba wrote in her 1987 memoirs that friends and relatives who first encouraged her to perform compared her voice to that of a nightingale. With her distinctive style combining jazz with folk with South African township rhythms, she was often called "The Empress of African Song."

Streisand Sparred With Brolin Over W. Role

Actor Josh Brolin sparred with his liberal step-mother Barbra Streisand - when she protested his role in new George W. Bush biopic W.

The singer has been an outspoken opponent of Bush throughout his two terms in the White House.

And according to Brolin, Streisand freaked out when he told her he would be playing him in Oliver Stone's movie.

Brolin tells the Times of London, "She said, 'How much are you getting paid? I told her it was a very low fee. She said, 'Then why are you doing it?'"

But the actor insists the legendary star's snub didn't give him second thoughts.

He adds, "She was furious and would not talk to me. I kind of liked that one."

So it'd be OK if it was for enough money. Sheesh. I thought he was awesome in it and I hope he gets a nom (although I think it'll be Langella FTW).

Andy in Merced, Calif.: Kristin, I have to know! Is Angela going to get pregnant with Dwight's baby? How perfect would that be since we all know she's not sleeping with Andy?

She said coyly: "Wouldn't it be funny if all of a sudden I had to be pregnant since I was just pregnant for real? I can tell you this: Things get really complicated pretty quickly in a few episodes." So my money is definitely on a preggo storyline for Angela! (And not just because I want everyone in the world to join me in getting chubby on pickles and mac and cheese.) ccording to NASA, the space agency is no longer receiving communications from Phoenix, its Mars lander, after more than five months of operation. The not unexpected event came after the lander moved into an area, NASA said in a release Monday, where "seasonal decline in sunshine at the robot's arctic landing site is not providing enough sunlight for the solar arrays to collect the power necessary to charge batteries that operate the lander's instruments."

In other words, Phoenix has run out of gas. But according to NASA, the agency got more out of the lander project than it expected, so it considers--what else would you expect NASA to say at this point--the mission a success.

And while the lack of suitable sunlight, as well as a dustier sky, led to the inability to power up Phoenix's batteries, NASA does hold out some hope that the lander might return to life at some point.

NASA launched Phoenix on August 4, 2007, and it landed on Mars on May 25, 2008, "farther north than any previous spacecraft to land on the Martian surface."

Among its goals? It "dug, scooped, baked, sniffed, and tasted" Mars' soil. And while that may not seem like glorious duties, NASA credits Phoenix with confirming the presence of water-ice in Mars' subsurface, something that had first been detected remotely by NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter in 2002. Phoenix was also a prolific photographer, shooting more than 25,000 pictures of the Red Plant during its tenure there.

NASA said that Phoenix helped further study the question of whether Mars was ever a suitable environment for microbes, and also determined that Mars harbored small deposits of salts that might have been "nutrients for life." In addition, Phoenix discovered calcium carbonate on Mars, "a marker of effects of liquid water."

Throughout the Mars Phoenix mission, NASA had sent out Twitter posts related to the project. Along the way, it gathered 38,417 followers (as of this writing), making the account the seventh most-followed on the service. (Barack Obama holds the top spot.)

And it seems NASA knew that Phoenix was dying. One post prior to its binary goodbye, the account read, "It's very unlikely I'll wake up next spring but if I do I'll call home. Good luck w/ your project."

ISTANBUL - The mayor of Batman, a city recently under scrutiny due to unsolved murders and increasing rates of female suicides, will sue director Christopher Nolan, the filmmaker behind the recent "Batman" films.

Not a superhero with supernatural abilities, or a person wealthy enough to buy high-tech toys to fight evil, but a simple human being named Hüseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of the southeastern city of Batman, declared war against his city’s namesake superhero, Batman.

“The royalty of the name ‘Batman’ belongs to us … There is only one Batman in the world. The American producers used the name of our city without informing us,” Kalkan told to the Doğan news agency. Batman is a centuries old city, taking root in the Neolithic age but becoming significant when oil was found in the region at the end of 1940s. Almost a decade before that, Batman was created as a comic hero. Kalkan is going to sue Christopher Nolan, the director of the latest Batman movie “The Dark Night,” not DC Comics, the creator of the superhero.

Mayor Kalkan, speaking to the Hürriyet Daily News and the Economic Review, said last year foreign media picked up on Batman and the city’s increasing suicide rates among women. He said a columnist asked why Batman’s mayor did not sue the movie Batman for royalties while struggling with economic problems. “We found this criticism right and started to look for legal possibilities of a case like that,” he said.

Meanwhile, local newspaper Batman Çağdaş alleged yesterday that Batman residents living abroad cannot use Batman as a title for their business, leading the municipality to think about the royalty rights of that name.

However, mayor Kalkan rejected any allegations about the issue and said they do not have any information that Batman residents living abroad have problems about using Batman as a name.

But Batman Çağdaş newspaper reported that Şafii Dağ, a former Batman resident, currently living in the Germany city of Wesel, is one of those citizens who cannot use Batman as a title for his business, according to the newspaper. “I named my two restaurants Batman. But six months ago, a team of employees from the production company of the movie Batman made me change the title. Telling them that Batman was the name of my hometown did not change anything,” Dağ said.

Meanwhile, the name of a local region cannot be registered as a brand name, said lawyer Vehbi Kahveci, head of the Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights Commission of the Istanbul Bar. Also having overseas clients, Kahveci said “Batman” and his image is registered all around the world. The Batman Municipality missed the period in which they could object to the registration decision for Batman’s name as a superhero, according to Kahveci.

GIRLS Aloud have signed a megabucks deal to film a Christmas special.
The sexy girlband will add a dash of festive spice to ITV with The Girls Aloud Party.

The show will see Nadine Coyle, 23, Nicola Roberts, 23, Cheryl Cole, 25, Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh, both 26, perform hits and unveil their Christmas single. They’ll also chat to showbiz pals — with Take That top of their list — AND perform comic skits.

“The show will be a Girls Aloud Christmas party and loads of fun.” ITV was prepared to pay over the odds to secure the girls who are keen to sign up with the station, TV Biz can reveal.

A source said: “The girls are like family to ITV and we’d do anything to stop them going to another channel. They started their career here on Popstars: The Rivals and the public loves them.

“And since Cheryl’s been on X Factor she’s become a national treasure.”

The source added: “They want people to see another side of them which is why they’ve agreed to do the show.

“They’re more ambitions than just singing and this is a great showcase for them. Sarah in particular wants to be an actress.

“Also, it gives them a chance to show Charlotte Church how it’s done. That rivalry’s still there and they’re really stepping on her toes with this.”

“It’ll be the must-see show of the season.”

George Clooney, Eriq La Salle return to ER

ER alum Noah Wyle tells TV Guide to expect appearances by former castmates before the end of the series.

NBC is pulling the plug on incredibly long-lived medical drama ER. The show, once a blockbusting hit, has seen ratings and interest dwindle in recent years, and its currently-airing 15th season will be its last. But a warhorse like ER deserves a hero's farewell, and it looks like it's going to get just that in the form of visits from stars past.

Noah Wyle, who played Dr. John Carter in the show's first through 11th seasons, is returning for a four-episode arc and has confirmed to TV Guide that Eriq La Salle will also return as Dr. Peter Benton. Of even more interest to ER devotees and fans of silver-fox movie stars, Wyle teased the return of George Clooney as the original "McDreamy," Dr. Doug Ross.

"From what I heard, George said, 'absolutely,' schedule permitting," Wyle stated.

Clooney's publicist has refused to comment on Wyle's declarations, but we've become familiar with the true meaning of a publicist's "no comment" and will be looking forward to Clooney's return.

Today, Hot Topic hosted a Twilight event in San Francisco..

Insanity ensued in the early hours of the morning, cops were called, and the event was cancelled.

Then, some brilliant girls from ontd_twatlight stuck around, and ended up finding out that Robert Pattinson was, in fact coming, and the even was not actually cancelled.
He showed up 30 minutes late to his 6 pm appearance, and helicopters could be heard above the mall.
500 wristbands were given out to lucky fans of the Twilight movie.

annyong Provides us with this signed poster for one of ohnotheydidnt's sister communities.

annyong says that Hot Topic staff were attempting to 'train' them on how to behave with Robert Pattinson (or Rpattz), telling fans: "He's very shy, so please try not to overwhelm him".

annyong described him as being very nice, though he looked a little uncomfortable.
He apparently laughed when the motley crew of girls from ontd_twatlight showed up wearing t-shirts with funny pictures and images of his crony bff, Tom Sturridge.

World's ugliest dog dies after battle with cancer

GULFPORT, Fla. — A one-eyed, three-legged dog that won the title of world's ugliest pooch this summer has died. The St. Petersburg Times in Florida reports that Gus, a Chinese crested dog, had cancer. He was 9. Gus was rescued from a bad home and went on to win the annual World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in northern California.

Gus came from humble origins. According to the fair, his adopted family in Gulfport, Fla., rescued him after learning he was being kept in a crate inside someone's garage.

He had one leg amputated because of a skin tumor and lost an eye in a cat fight.

Gus' owner had said the prize money from the contest would be put toward the dog's radiation treatment.

Here is an interview with Gus' mom

Samaire Armstrong back on DSM

They said she'd be back, and they weren't fibbing.

An ABC spokesperson confirms that Samaire Armstrong will be returning to Dirty Sexy Money for a special Thanksgiving-themed episode to air on Nov. 26.

The change-of-pace hour takes place while the Darlings are away celebrating Tofurkey Day. Back in New York, Clark the chauffeur sits down with a reporter to offer his take on the clan's many scandals, including Juliet's globe trotting adventures with her lover, Kai.

This marks Armstrong's first appearance since being taken off contract last spring.

Juliet, Jeremy, Brian and Patrick > rest of those boring bastards.

Michelle Williams' father to be extradited to US

AP – American actress Michelle Williams arrives at the 2008 World Music Awards ceremony in Monaco, Sunday …

SYDNEY, Australia – Michelle Williams ' father, a prominent stock market trader, agreed Tuesday to return to the United States to face tax evasion charges.

Larry Williams has been fighting extradition since he was arrested by Australian police in 2006 after flying to Sydney for a speaking tour in Australia and New Zealand. He has been free on bail.

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service wants to question the 65-year-old Virgin Islands resident about a possible $1.5 million in unpaid taxes from book royalties and earnings related to international seminars he conducted between 1990 and 2001.

Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that Williams will leave for Los Angeles on Wednesday.

"I will fight this and win," Williams said before sheriffs escorted him from court. "I will be back — I have a lot of friends here in Australia."

Michelle Williams received an Oscar nomination as best supporting actress for her performance in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain," playing the wife of Heath Ledger's character. Ledger, who died from an accidental prescription drug overdose in January, is the father of her 3-year-old daughter Matilda Rose, Larry Williams' granddaughter.

So which Michelle Williams are they talking about? The picture shows Michelle from Destinys Child, but the last paragraph throws me off. You'd really think that the Associated Press would double check their work.

Albert Brooks: Lighten Up, America

I am not referring to the color of peoples' skin, I am referring to the thickness of it. The president-elect made a small joke about Nancy Reagan having séances in the White House and maybe he got a little mixed up about having séances instead of consulting astrologers, but so effing what? Immediately after he finished, the Sean Hannitys of the world started to beat him up and finally I see he had to call Mrs. Reagan to apologize. Please Mr. President-Elect, don't let whatever sense of humor you possess be beaten out of you this early. This is what we need. John F. Kennedy had it, and it was before the Internet when you could actually make off-the-cuff remarks without having to apologize to every Tom, Dick and Nancy. This is another of the many dangers of the Internet, it makes people in high places turn into machines, the very thing we want out of our lives. (But that is another blog altogether.)

We want a real live breathing human, who can talk to us, occasionally make us laugh a little, and God forbid insult someone. And by the way, I've met Nancy Reagan several times and she seemed to have a fine sense of humor and probably was the last person on earth offended by this. I am sorry he was bullied into calling her. That kind of comment does not warrant an apology. And I hope -- I hope -- this is not the beginning of the robotization of Barack Obama. Go ahead, Mr. President-Elect, be who you are. That is the reason we voted for you. Don't let them, on the day of your first press conference, turn you into what we are so grateful to have finally gotten rid of. You were great today.
