Kylie 'fell to pieces' when told about cancer

LONDON (AFP) - Pop diva Kylie Minogue says she "all fell to pieces" when doctors told her that she had breast cancer, in an interview to be telecast in Britain later this month.

Minogue, 38, who ventured back on stage a few weeks ago when she appeared at a London nightspot to sing with her sister Danni Minogue, also said she is looking forward to getting back to her musical career.

She was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer while preparing for the Australian leg of her Showgirl Tour in May 2005. She underwent surgery in Melbourne and further treatment in Europe which ended in December.

"The moment my doctors told me, I went silent," the diminuitive Australian-born chanteuse said in the interview, part of an hour-long documentary to air on Sky One television on July 16.

"My mum and dad were with me. We all fell to pieces. I was saying: 'No, I'm getting on a plane' (to continue the tour). They said: 'No you're not. Sit down'."

Last weekend Minogue made what she called "my official coming out" at a celebrity-studded charity bash at singer Elton John's country home, west of London, that raised money for AIDS victims.

Douglas Settles Suit Against Fla. Cos.

Michael Douglas has settled his lawsuit against two Florida companies that he alleged improperly used his name and image to promote their own products and services.

The sealed settlement was agreed to last month, and the case was formally closed June 27, according to federal court records.

The lawsuit claimed footage the actor shot for educational purposes was instead used for commercial gain by Boca Raton-based companies, Family Television Studios, Inc. and Paradigm Media Group, L.L.C.

According to the suit, Douglas's name and likeness were used to lure sponsors to give money for segments that were never produced or never aired.

Douglas sought to have the companies stop using his likeness and name. The lawsuit also sought any profits made from the segments and compensation of more than $75,000, plus attorney's fees and others costs.

Paradigm Media Group did not immediately return a telephone message left at their offices, while no telephone number was listed for Family Television Studios, Inc. Douglas' attorney Michael Moskowitz did not immediately return a telephone message left at his Fort Lauderdale office.

Douglas, 61, won an Oscar for his role in 1987's "Wall Street." He has also starred in "Fatal Attraction," "Traffic" and "Wonder Boys," among other films.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest UK premiere

Johnny Depp, Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom were in London on July 3rd for the European premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and I have found a bunch of pictures here: BBC News Website Pictures

There are also many pictures here here . They have watermarks on them but they are much better than the BBC ones. I only just found them, hence the edit.

I was in the front row a little to the side from the Odeon cinema and it was insane. The three stars were wonderful to the fans, though, and signed for two hours I hear. I got autographs from all three and when I told Johnny that I thought the film looked great and couldn't wait to see it, he said "thank you" and lightly touched my hand as if to show he meant it. He's as nice as everyone says.

There were also cast members from Lost, The OC, Charlotte Church and Jonathan Ross were amoung the guests in attendance but they didn't sign really.

Is Paris Hilton Really That Dumb?

It's a conundrum, right? That blank bovine look. The endless stream of airhead quotes in US Weekly. The reality show about being incompetent. And yet, with little to no discernable talent besides dressing extremely expensively, Paris Hilton has managed to do what should be impossible: She's become famous for no reason at all. And not just flash-in-the-pan, 15 minutes, William Hung famous, but hit TV show/record album/movie roles/video game/fragrance line-still-here-and-bigger-than-ever-several-years-later famous.

Sure, the family's millions and the emaciated body help, but there are plenty of skinny heiresses lunching on the streets of New York and L.A. And so we begin to ponder the great question of our age: Is it possible to be super-dumb and super-successful, or are those vacant eyes just a facade? Is Paris Hilton a secret smarty?

"She is very media savvy," says Perez Hilton, founder of the gossip website perezhilton.com, which chronicles the lives of the rich and beautiful. "She has a baby-doll voice that she puts on camera and TV a lot of time, but the smart, different, real Paris doesn't talk like that. It's all a bag of tricks."

But to be fair, he may not be the most objective source: he quickly informs us that he has been an official Friend of Paris (FOP?) for nine months and running. "We talk everyday and see each other about once a week," he says. "We have a genuine friendship."

David Hauslaib, editor and writer of Jossip.com is no friend of Paris and thinks the heiress is just as airheaded as she seems. "Yes. Paris Hilton is an idiot is what it comes down to," he says.

According to Hauslaib, it is the heiress's legion of lawyers, flacks, stylists and advisors who are responsible for turning a dumb rich girl into a worldwide phenomenon. "Paris has an army of very talented handlers surrounding her when it comes to spinning her quotes on her music career and her fragrance and shaping her public image," he says. "Some will argue it is not executed too successfully because we have endless paparazzi shots of her crashing her car and doing stupid things, but she's on the cover of every magazine so they are doing something right."

But Mark Lisanti, the secretly nice guy behind Defamer.com, thinks that Paris deserves credit for her dizzying success. He also thinks she's dumb. "You know what? This is probably the answer, she's an idiot savant," he says after mulling the question for a while. "I have heard anecdotally that what you see is what you get, which destroyed my theory that she was a super-genius that was playing the public for laughs."

Lisanti acknowledges it is probable that Paris has somebody working for her that is pulling the strings, but says her gift for keeping her name in the press is undeniable and hers alone. "I think idiot savant," he reiterates. "The talent being publicity whoring, and that is certainly worth something."

Nicole Richie and Matt Dillon?!

Richie is playing the delicate game of trying to stay fuck-buddies with her ex to minimize the breakup pain, but keeping her options open. She was spotted with unlikely beau Matt Dillion at Hollywood hotspot Chateau Marmot last week:

Star Couples

Denise Richards, 35, and Richie Sambora, 46, have taken their romance worldwide, touring Italy (left) and Paris together – just two months after her former friend and his ex Heather Locklear learned about the relationship. But should they be so public about it?

Justin Timberlake, 25, and Cameron Diaz, 33 – together for nearly three years – faced down recent rumors of a split by reuniting for a trip to Barcelona. "The couple are in fact very much together," a source says.

What seemed so two months ago between Nick Lachey, 32, and MTV's Vanessa Minnillo, 25, is hot again. The duo – who both like to date around – headed to Cabo San Lucas (left) in June, then turned up at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto.

It's official: Keith Richards to Be in 'Pirates' Movie

I know this was discussed before, but this is the official word from Jerry Bruckheimer and others.

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is lined up to play the swashbuckling father of a pirate in the third installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, star Johnny Depp said Tuesday.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Richards would have a cameo role as the father of the flamboyant Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Depp, in the third "Pirates" movie, which is due to resume filming next month in California.

Depp, 43, has said he adopted the body language and mannerisms of the veteran guitarist to create Captain Jack's character.

"We're all looking forward to the idea of Keith coming in and doing a cameo," Depp told a London news conference to promote "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which opens in Britain on Thursday.

"You never say it's definite until the guy steps on the set and the camera is rolling. But it's looking very, very good," he said.

Co-star Orlando Bloom said he was similarly enthusiastic about working with Richards — provided the rocker is in good health.

"I can't wait to see him — well, if he doesn't kill himself falling out of coconut trees," Bloom said. "Very rock and roll."

Richards, 62, suffered a head injury in late April, when he reportedly fell out of a palm tree while vacationing in Fiji.

Having made a full recovery, Richards will join the Stones for their rescheduled European tour, beginning Tuesday in Milan.

This might be very interesting to see.

US stars align in anti-Iraq war hunger strike

Star Hollywood actor-activists including Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon and anti-war campaigners led by bereaved mother Cindy Sheehan plan to launch a hunger strike, demanding the immediate return of US troops from Iraq.

As Americans get set to fire up barbeques in patriotic celebration of US Independence Day on July 4, anti-war protestors planned to savour a last meal outside the White House, before embarking on a 'Troops Home Fast' at midnight.

"We've marched, held vigils, lobbied Congress, camped out at Bush's ranch, we've even gone to jail, now it's time to do more," said Sheehan, who emerged as an anti-war icon after losing her 24-year-old son Casey in Iraq.

The hunger strike was the latest bid by the US anti-war movement to grab hold of American public opinion, after numerous marches, vigils and political campaigns.

Despite polls which show the Iraq war is unpopular and many Americans are skeptical of President George W. Bush's wartime leadership, peace protests have not hit the opinion-swaying critical mass seen during Vietnam War.

"We have been continually sheltered from the actual cost of war from the beginning," said Meredith Dearborn, of human rights group Global Exchange, explaining how anti-Iraq war protests have stuttered.

While 2,526 US soldiers have died since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to an AFP tally based on Pentagon figures, the impact of the deaths has rarely dominated headlines.

While it is not unusual to see an Iraq-war veteran or amputee in an airport for instance, or newspaper features on horrific injuries inflicted by roadside bombs in Iraq, the United States hardly feels like a nation at war.

Some protestors and experts in public opinion put that down to the absence of the Vietnam War style conscription draft, which means only professional soldiers or reservists can be sent off to war.

"We have done everything we could think of to end this war, we have protested, held marches, vigils ... lobbied, written letters to Congress," said Dearborn.

"Now it is time to bring the pain and suffering of war home. We are putting our bodies on the line for peace."

Perhaps the only time the anti-Iraq war movement captured lasting coverage was in August 2005, when Sheehan and supporters pitched camp outside Bush's Texas ranch, where the president habitually stays in high summer.

Even then, the fiercely partisan debate unleashed may have harmed Sheehan, who faced fierce fire from conservative groups and radio talk show hosts, as much as it hurt the Bush administration's image over Iraq.

The hunger strike will see at least four activists, Sheehan, veteran comedian and peace campaigner Dick Gregory, former army colonel Ann Wright and environmental campaigner Diane Wilson launch serious, long-term fasts.

"I don't know how long I can fast, but I am making this open-ended," said Wilson.

Other supporters, including Penn, Sarandon, novelist Alice Walker and actor Danny Glover will join a 'rolling" fast, a relay in which 2,700 activists pledge to refuse food for at least 24 hours, and then hand over to a comrade.

Though the anti-war movement is trying hard to puncture public perceptions, some experts believe such protests have little impact on how Americans view foreign wars.

Ohio State University professor John Mueller for example, argued in the Foreign Affairs journal in December, that only rising US casualties could be proven to erode public support for a conflict.

Anti-war movements during the Korean and Iraq wars have been comparitively invisible, but public support had eroded in a similar way to the Vietnam conflict, in which the peace movement played a dominant role, he wrote.

Recent polls reveal public scepticism over Iraq, and damage to Bush's personal ratings.

In a poll in Time magazine published Friday, only 33 percent of respondents approved of Bush's leadership on Iraq while 64 percent said they disapproved his handling of the campaign.

A Pew Research Center poll released on June 20, found that only 35 percent of Americans approved of Bush's handling of the Iraqi conflict -- though that was up five percent from a similar poll in February.

Blind Item

This gorgeous young couple was the talk of the Cannes Film Festival - and not because of the blockbuster movies they were supposed to be promoting. Because they seemed to spend every day in paradise scrounging for cocaine! (And they LOOK so sweet and innocent.) They asked hotel employees "Can you get us some coke?" They hounded publicists and producers for blow. They even coerced their French speaking friends to ask locals where they could get coke. By the end of their stay, people were avoiding them and their fixation. But we have to admit, they do have a pair of the best beach bodies anywhere!

Tater Tops 2006 Winners

The results of the tater tops 2006 winners are in.

Drumroll, please! Tater Tops are here!

It's better than the Emmys, tastier than the Golden Globes and it's yours, all yours.

I'm talking, of course, about the Tater Top Awards. And the winners are in! You can see our first-ever Tater Top Awards ceremony with your very own eyes in the video clip at right, which reveals many of the top categories, along with special appearances by Ellen Pompeo, Jenna Fischer, Donald Faison, Michael Vartan and some of your tube-lovin' brethren.

The Taters are the TV kudofest in which you pick the winners. You can find out who won in all the categories by clicking on the big Golden Tater below. There are even a few surprise video clips with some of the winners. (And let me just say, the exchange with Michael Vartan made my career--no, life.)

I think you'll truly be pleased with the winners. After all, you chose them. And you might be surprised by some of the results, like the hotly contested "Best Chemistry" category and our very first four-way tie in the category "Moment That Made You Want to Throw Out Your TV." (Lucky for you, there are plenty of Golden Tater trophies to go around.)

Many other categories were anything but close, especially when it came to a certain show that seemed to win anything in which it was so much as mentioned: Grey's Anatomy. Grey's took home the most awards of any show--nine to be exact, with Lost, Prison Break and Scrubs also getting high honors.

Did I ever tell you all that you have good taste? I never cease to be amazed. And hopefully, the Emmy voters will follow your lead as they make their own picks. (Emmy nominations will be announced July 6. You can watch them live on E! at 8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT.) It only makes sense for them to stop and take notice of the shows and stars the true fans adore, like Kristen Bell, Lauren Graham, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, Katherine Heigl, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, et al.

As you may remember, we do send out real trophies to these winners, and I'd be happy to send along any messages you might have for them. So, if you do, feel free to email me at tvdiva@eonline.com.

Thanks so much for playing. As always, the Taters are my favorite time of year. And they're such an adrenaline rush; I need time to recover...

'Australia among the top 20'
14 June 2006
by FIFAworldcup.com

Ian Thorpe (born on October 13, 1982) is also known as the 'Thorpedo'. The Australian swimmer who, after winning the 200 and 400 metre freestyle races at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, became known as one of the greatest middle-distance swimmers of all time. He has won five Olympic Games gold medals, more than any other Australian before.

Interview with Ian Thorpe about the performance of the Australian team

Did you watch the Australia–Japan game and where did you watch it?
Yes I did, late at night in Australia. I saw it at home, late on Monday night. It was quite strange because I went from Australia, where everyone's ecstatic, to Japan, where the mood is obviously a lot more sombre.

What do you think about the performance of your team on the pitch?
Australia have a strong team. We’ve been very unlucky when you look at the draw that we had to qualify for the World Cup. We have some very talented players. If you look at where we are in the rankings, I don’t really think it’s a true indication of how skilled and how good the Australian team actually is.

Who in your opinion was the most important player on the pitch?
Marco Bresciano. Mark Viduka didn’t have his best game, I thought – normally he’s very strong up there. But it is not about the individuals in this team.

Do you think Australia can make it through to the round of 16?
I definitely think Australia are a top 20 team. Reaching the last 16 would be a fantastic result for Australia and it is possible. At the moment, we've got a 50-50 chance. We have a good chance of reaching the second round.

Have you seen any other 2006 FIFA World Cup™ games?
I saw Italy play Ghana, and I actually thought the Italians would be a little bit stronger. But usually when Italy have a good World Cup, they start slowly and then build up, and I am expecting good things from them.

What is your favourite team after the Australians?
You know, there’s no real team that I support. I like how the Italians play, and I also think Germany have a good chance with the home crowd, which will definitely help. Argentina will be strong as well, but who do I think will be in the final? I think it might be Italy-Brazil.

And what do you think the score will be in that final?
I think Brazil will win 2-1.

A website would you like to promote?
My charity. You can visit the website by clicking here.

Your future projects?
I’m in Japan at the moment launching my drink, which is an advanced water called ‘Thorpedo’. Then I’ll head over to LA to train for the next three months and then return to Australia in preparation for the World Championships, which are being held in Melbourne early in 2007.

Music producer reportedly gets pardon

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Dubai's ruler pardoned American R&B producer Dallas Austin on Tuesday, hours after he was sentenced to four years in prison for possession of cocaine, two of the producer's lawyers said.

Dubai ruler Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum issued the pardon but Austin has not yet been released from jail, said the lawyers.

One lawyer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Austin's release was "a matter of paperwork." The lawyer said he needed to be careful speaking publicly about the pardon until the Grammy-winning producer was safe on a plane back to his home in Atlanta.

A second member of Austin's five-attorney legal team confirmed the pardon, but said he had not yet received details. Austin's release could take a few days, the attorney said.

I guess it pays to be famous in more than a few ways. He could have disappeared and never been heard from again. Lucky bastard.

WHICH closeted character actor was caught in his trailer performing a sex act on his hunky male co-star during the filming of their movie?

WHICH New York-based fashion financier likes to fly to Las Vegas with his wife and hire hookers for the both of them? Apparently the rag-trade titan watches the call girls have sex with each other before he and his spouse ravage them in the couple's lavish hotel suite.

Maybe Kevin Spacey and Brandon Routh for the first one? I have no idea about the second one though.

But i'm a lady!

Little Britain star in Channel swim
IT'S not normally the sort of thing you'd expect a lady would do, but Little Britain star David Walliams is on his way to France - attempting to swim the English Channel for charity.

Walliams, 34, who plays a transvestite, Emily Howard, as one of his characters on the UK TV show, has been training for a year, recently completing an eight-hour swim in Croatia to “qualify” for his channel attempt.
He's put on weight – to help deal with the 15C water temperatures – and he was all greased up when he entered the water at Folkestone at 5.40am local time (1.40pm AEST).

Just over three hours later, according to observers, Walliams was “still going strong as he breaks the 7 mile barrier” on the 21-nautical-mile crossing.

At that pace, Walliams might be expected to complete the crossing in 10-15 hours, if all goes well, given the extra distance required in channel crossings due to tides and currents.

Walliams is attempting the channel crossing in support of Sport Relief, a UK charity which brings performers and sportspeople together to raise funds for worthy causes.

At the time of diving in, Walliams had raised $642,000.

There *won't* be a season 2

We nearly chocked on our Independence Day hot dog when we read reports like this one and this other one that claimed that Britney and K-Fag were set to reprise their UPN reality show, Chaotic, for a second season.

In fact, the reports even had this alleged quote from Spears:"I know that things are fine, but this show will put paid to those rumors finally."

Well, thankfully for us and Tater Tot, these reports are false, Britney's publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, tells PerezHilton.com exclusively.

"Britney is not doing a second season of Chaotic," she says. "It's not true."

'Superman Returns': Learning to fly

The tall, handsome guy with the square jaw and the Midwest manners was comfortably anonymous when he arrived at the lunchtime patio of Il Piccolino on Robertson, but the staff began whispering when the gentleman stepped back outside to have his photograph taken for a major metropolitan daily newspaper. By the time Brandon Routh sat back down for lunch, his secret identity was pretty much shot.

"They figured out who I am, but, you know, usually I don't get too many people recognizing me. My hairdo in real life is not like Superman. It keeps me pretty safe at this point. But I know it'll happen more when the movie comes out."

The movie is "Superman Returns," which lands in theaters on June 30 and should instantly transform Routh from a mere mortal actor with some soap-opera credits into the iconic hero of a Warner Bros. franchise of the first order. A week before Routh took a corner table and ordered a chicken-and-broccoli pasta dish (what, you expected something with capers?), the young actor was on the cover of Entertainment Weekly for the second time — not bad for a guy who has so far starred in only a movie trailer. Such is the power of that red-and-blue suit, perhaps the most famous piece of clothing since Santa's fur-lined ensemble.

Principal filming of "Superman Returns," directed by Bryan Singer and also starring Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth, wrapped in Australia just before Thanksgiving. Since then, Routh has spent time with his girlfriend, made it home for the holidays with his family in Iowa, and even jetted off to Italy to hoist a torch during the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. On deck, the promotional circuit for the film will take him to London, Tokyo, Paris, Brazil and other places the small-town kid has never been.

Wearing the cape is a tall order, the 26-year-old knows. He's aware that Christopher Reeve struggled to find other film roles after wearing it, and that, decades ago, George Reeves became bitter when producers didn't want him for other work and kids on the street kicked him to see if he was invulnerable.

"They still might," Routh said. For the record, he promised not to kick back. "I'll just start wearing shin guards."

Over lunch, Routh chewed as much on his thoughts as he did his arugula salad. He spoke carefully too; he has been displeased with some aspects of the early media coverage and he is bracing for the ride through the strange gantlet of the international press junket.

"I've already learned some important and good lessons," he said.

What have been the sticky points? Routh, who works out diligently, isn't happy that some people have the impression that his physique on screen is the creation of CGI special effects and a magic suit.

"For people who haven't seen me in person, they don't understand," he said with a sour expression. "It's actually the only thing I get touchy about — no, not touchy; the only thing I worry about is people getting the perception that it was all going to be fake."

The actor wore the expression of a guy who tells himself that he's fighting a losing battle. Fake and real are hard to sort out in a movie that makes you believe a man can fly. Routh, for instance, has brown eyes, but contact lenses made them blue in the movie. But not blue enough — the filmmakers went back and tinkered even more with his irises in the close-up scenes. There are so many CGI images in the film that Routh himself admits that in some segments he is not sure if he is seeing himself or just a hard-drive approximation of himself, real muscles and all.

Also, Brandon Routh and girlfriend Courtney Ford star in the 2006 short film Denial directed by newcomer Joel Kelly, produced by Courtney Ford, and executive produced by Roberto Orci (Mission: Impossible: III). Shot on 35 mm film stock just weeks before Superman Returns, the 15 min. film premiered at the CineVegas Film Festival Monday, June 12th with both actors in attendance.
"When a seemingly picture perfect relationship begins to unravel, one man must make a choice between the woman of his dreams, and his reality. What follows is a raw glimpse into how loneliness and regret can test the limits of one's sanity."

50 Cent's backs 24 hour booze law

50 Cent is a big fan of England's new 24-hour drinking laws - because it encourages group sex.

The American rapper loves alcohol because it allows people to lose their inhibitions and encourages them to experiment between the sheets.

50 insists the easiest way to have an orgy or a threesome is to get the women you are with drunk.

He revealed to Britain's Loaded magazine: "Everyone should be allowed to drink at whatever hours they feel they want to do it.

"Man, I've had some good times and parties in pubs after 11pm.

"England's drinking laws are definitely going to cause more threesomes and if you're out that late, you gotta feed the girl the champagne. They love that stuff."

However, despite encouraging sexual freedom, 50 insists he always practices safe sex.

He said: "Everyone should use a condom, because more dinking will also cause more baby population."

Question: Please help us put an end to our agony: There have been rumors, but do you know for sure if Milo Ventimiglia and Alexis Bledel have broken up? — Marianna

Ausiello: This is your lucky day, Marianna. Last Friday, Milo himself dropped by the TV Guide offices for a quick meet-and-greet with the staff, and guess what question popped out of my mouth first? C'mon, guess. [Pause] Yes — your question! And sadly, it's true. He confirmed that he and Alexis are no longer an item and he's back on the market. The extremely private actor then added with a laugh, "And that's about all you'll get out of me." Well, that's all the private stuff, anyway. Milo did dish about a possible return to Gilmore Girls, saying it's "never going to happen" — especially now that Team Palladino have hit the road. "I felt [Jess' story] was done a long time ago, but Dan and Amy kept saying, 'We got some cool things, and we're really hoping you'll be a part of it.' So I went back and I kind of enjoyed what Jess turned into. He turned into a grown-up. Watching that last episode, I was like, 'It's done.'" Milo said a bunch of other stuff about GG and his roles in Rocky 6 and Heroes, which, if you're interested, I can post in the Ausiello Report later this week, or whenever I feel like it. Just let me know.
