Superproducers Temper Too Short

By BRETT JOHNSON, For The Associated Press

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Other rappers pony up lurid details of groupie love and strip-club sexploits, but no MC upstages Too Short when putting pimp-game specifics to music.

Now on his 16th album — the unforgivingly graphic "Blow Your Whistle" — the Oakland hip-hop veteran has employed some friends to help the raunch go down smoother.

A rap icon for his simplistic delivery and unique pronunciation of the B-word, Too Short has recently stayed relevant by recording with buzzworthy artists (check his verse on Kelis'"Bossy") and employing hot producers. This disc is no different: Fellow rappers including Rick Ross and E-40 make cameos and Atlanta hitmakers Lil Jon and Jazze Pha provide the bulk of beats that cover Bay Area hyphy, Southern crunk and blaxploitation funk.

The Lil Jon-produced title cut moves to a swampy bass line and piercing whistle bursts. Too Short explains his longevity in his laconic, twangy flow: "I go on and on/ Can't understand how I last so long/I must have superpowers."

It may be hyperbole. But it helps to explain "Keep Bouncin'," an unlikely collaboration between Too Short, Snoop Dogg and Will.i.Am. The Black Eyed Peas frontman layers the beat with thumping drums, a Public Enemy sample and a female voice that repeats, "It makes me wanna bounce."

Despite the disc's guests, Too Short's plainspoken approach rules — especially on cuts such as the oral sex ode "Nothing Feels Better" and the self-explanatory "Strip Down." And while Kurupt and Daz tease aloof women on "Sadity," Too Short declares: "You ain't ever too cute to get slapped/ (Expletive) don't change when you get with a mack." Needless to say, the disc is not for the easily offended.

"Are Tom and Katie on the rocks already?"

Is there trouble in TomKat land?

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reportedly got into a big fight — that ended with Holmes deciding to take baby Suri to Ohio to introduce the two-month-old to family and friends. Tom, who is rumored to have a rocky relationship with Holmes’ parents, won’t be joining them, according to Life & Style Weekly

“He told Katie he wasn’t going, considering the bad relations between him and her family,” an “insider” told the mag. “Katie was really happy he said that, because she’d been afraid to admit to him that she didn’t want him to go.

The couple allegedly had a “huge argument” which ended with Katie declaring, “I’m doing this and you can’t stop me.” Her rep denies the story.

Cruise reportedly decided to fly his fiancée and tot to Toledo, drop them off and fly back to pick them up.

The episode, however, may be giving Holmes second thoughts. A “confidant” of hers told the mag: “Katie’s very unhappy and beginning to realize she may have made a major mistake being with Tom.”

Why am I not surprised?

'Barbie' Antoinette booed at Cannes

CANNES, France (AFP) - "Marie Antoinette", the long-awaited movie from Oscar-winning US director Sofia Coppola, has been booed and dismissed as a kind of Barbie meets "Desperate Housewives" romp.

Despite being beautifully filmed in the Versailles palace, and backed by a rollicking sound track with the likes of 80s bands The Cure and Bow Wow Wow, the film largely failed to live up to expectations.

More than two centuries after France's last queen was beheaded in 1793, Marie Antoinette still raises opposing passions here. And although many critics enjoyed the luscious feast for the eyes, they said the tale failed to convince.

The 40-million-dollar movie starring Kirsten Dunst is light years from the beautifully understated "Lost in Translation" which won Coppola an Oscar in 2004 for best original screenplay.

"I feel in my three films, there's a kind of a connection, a theme of young women trying to find their way and their identity, and to me it just feels like the last chapter of these three films," Coppola told journalists.

Brad's bike ride called wheely big mistake

Has Brad Pitt been reading the Britney Spears Child-Care Manual?

Spears, who has been blasted for putting her baby, Sean, at risk during recent car trips, has some company now that safety watchdogs are nipping at Pitt.

Thursday, the actor went out for a bicyle ride in Langstrand, Namibia, with son Maddox Pitt-Jolie, 4, and daughter Zahara Pitt-Jolie, 16 months.

Maddox, who wore a helmet, peddled a tricyle. Zahara, who did not, rode in a blue papoose strapped to Brad's back. That's a no-no, according Debra Smiley Holtzman, author of "The Safe Baby."

"[Zahara] needs a helmet and closed-toe shoes," Holtzman tells Us Weekly, which features photos of the outing in its new issue. "And I highly recommend toddlers ride in a child trailer pulled by a bike. It's more stable and secure."

Baby Talk senior editor Christina Vercelletto agreed.

Makers of the baby-pack "specifically say, 'Do not use while riding a bike,'" Vercelletto told us. "[It] will affect your balance. The safest place for her would be in a toddler bike seat."

Pitt's rep had no immediate comment on the scolding. Maybe the kiddie-caboose hasn't reached Namibia, where Pitt and Angelina Jolie are awaiting their first biological child.

Pitt yesterday sent word from Africa that, because of the baby's "imminent arrival," he couldn't join castmates Cate Blanchett and Gael García Bernal at the Cannes Film Fest premiere of "Babel."

Meanwhile, Namibian regional governor Samuel Nuuyoma is claiming that the couple has given him the right to name their baby.

"It's true," Nuuyoma is quoted as saying in the mag In Touch. "This is a great honor for Namibia, and everyone is very excited." But Pitt's rep tells us the name claim is "absolutely not true."

Namibians certainly have become protective of the couple. Paparazzo John Liebenberg spent three days in a communal jail cell after he plowed into the back of a police barracks while chasing a tip that Jolie had been rushed to a hospital.

And half of the Namibians who voted in a radio survey believe the day of the miraculous birth should be declared a national holiday.

Could Brangelina nativity crèches be far behind?

oh god, i hate brangelina so much. they are seriously the most disgusting pair of people. the entire fiasco makes me want to vommmm

Sweaty Fat Loser vs. Firecrotch part 324678934

"Brandon Davis Vs. Lindsay Lohan: Lohan Questioned About Firecrotch Incident's unquestioned dominance of the sidewalks outside of various Hollywood drinking establishments has finally yielded new footage advancing the storyline of the Shitfaced Brandon Davis Firecrotch Diatribe affair, as the website's egress-haunting videographers caught Lindsay Lohan at Shag the other night, shouting, "Did you see the video?" as she exited the new club. Lohan wisely refrained from answering in the affirmative or rebutting Davis's earlier, drunken denoucement of her shockingly meager $7 million personal worth as she fled for the safety of her automobile, where, thankfully, no TMZ camera crew was waiting to ask her, "But what about the firecrotch, Lindsay? Are you red down there?" a query they are no doubt saving for their next encounter in front of Privilege later this week."

Some moms come forward to defend Spears

Free Image Hosting -

Britney Spears. She's so easy to make fun of. Even her song titles conspire to mock her: "Oops, She Did It Again!" But the latest headlines about America's most maligned mother are evoking a new sentiment from fellow moms.

Almost tripped and dropped a baby? PLEASE, they're saying. What mom hasn't? Give the girl a break!

When little Sean Preston entered the world last September, the blessed event only intensified Spears' fame, as celebrity births do nowadays. But unlike, say,
Angelina Jolie or Gwyneth Paltrow, Spears had a way of appearing maternally challenged. First it was the sight of baby on Mom's lap in the driver's seat. (OK, that was bad.) Then, the accidental tumble as he was lifted off a high chair. Next, the car seat facing the wrong way in the convertible.

Not good, the celebrity mommy patrol said. We'd never do that.

Until ... the almost-baby-dropping incident.

Suddenly — and there's nothing scientific about any of this, mind you — but suddenly, it seems fellow moms are doing something a bit surprising: defending Britney.

"The woman just can't get a break!" says Lenna Janick, a mother of two in Ijamsville, Md. "I mean, I'm not gonna say that I love her. I don't know if she's a good mother or not. But she's human."

And as all moms know, "baby bobbles" happen all the time. Luckily, says Janick, news outlets weren't watching when she walked into a door years ago holding baby son Timmy, whose head hit the door jamb. Her other son, Alex, once fell off the bed as a baby. (Both are fine.)

The media also mysteriously missed the moment when Stacey Thaler, an actuary in New York, was sitting on the edge of the tub holding her 2-year-old son and fell in, with the toddler.

"If someone was watching me 24/7, I'm sure they would find any number of things I've done that would be questionable," Thaler says. "Almost dropped my kids? Definitely. Raising kids is hard — no one can really stand in judgment unless they're much closer to the situation."

Thousands of mothers apparently agree. This weekend, the Web site asked readers whether the media "has gone too far in its portrayal of Britney Spears as a bad mom." In a figure that surprised the editors, almost 10,000 people answered. The results: 75 percent said yes, 25 percent no.

"I think this last incident is the tipping point," says Janet Chan, editor in chief of Parenting magazine. "I'm not sure this means Britney Spears will be in every mom's Hall of Fame. But this one caused them to say, 'Hey, now we're picking on her.'"

The celebrity magazine US Weekly sensed a similar reaction. The photo of Spears nearly tripping (for the record, her very long jeans appeared to get caught in her espadrilles) elicited an unusually strong response on the magazine's blog, says editor Janice Min. Out of 700 responses, 60 percent were pro-Britney, she says.

"Anyone who has babies knows there are always near-misses," Min says. The problem with Spears, Min says, is that she got herself into multiple situations that didn't look good.

"Any one incident alone would not merit that much attention," she says. "But in the aggregate, they paint a picture that meets expectations the public already has." In other words, that Britney's a bad mom.

None of the mothers interviewed for this piece deny that Spears has shown questionable judgment, at best. But many noted that motherhood has long been subject to changing standards. Was it so long ago, for example, that kids roamed free in the car, unbelted? How long have kiddie bike helmets been around?

Some also noted that there's a silver lining to the various compromising photos of Spears: at least they show she's WITH the baby.

"Look, there are probably a number of celebrities who would have someone else caring for their baby while they went gallivanting around doing whatever," Thaler says. "So maybe we should give her credit for wanting to be with him so much."

So Britney, things may be looking up, just in time for your next baby. Your latest misstep — the one that almost had you and Sean sprawled on the ground — may have been a blessing in disguise.

"It may just be that it took tripping on the curb," Chan says, "for Britney to become part of the Mommy Club."

3LW is back in the game

3LW Set to Release Their Third Anticipated Album.

So So Def/Zomba platinum female recording artists 3LW are back with their third LP, POINT OF NO RETURN, set to be released in the US August 15th. The group has had early success with their 1999 single "No More" and that debut album garnered them with not only the Best New R&B Artist at the 2001 Lady of Soul Awards but also Album of the Year at the show!

After a four-year hiatus, Kiely Williams (19), Adrienne Bailon (21), and Jessica Benson (18), are getting reacquainted with their loyalists with their third album, Point of No Return, a light-hearted, party starter that signifies the genesis of their young adulthood. Although 3LW fans have been fortunate to witness Kiely and Adrienne growing up on the small screen as Aqua and Chanel in Disney's The Cheetah Girls series, it's the group's latest musical effort that offers a glimpse into their evolution as artists and women. "The album's title also speaks to our personal growth in our careers," says Adrienne. "We're no longer teenagers and our decision to return to music is challenging and unpredictable, but there's no turning back."

Their new single "Feelin' You" is the first from their upcoming album and is due to impact radio June 19. The track, produced by well known super- producer Jermaine Dupri, who is also a featured guest on the track, is a confessional party starter and expresses a woman's innermost sentiments about that special someone. The video, directed by Billie Woodruff, will hit the video channels in June as well. In addition to Jermaine Dupri, the album was recorded with the help from producers Scott Storch (Mario, Chris Brown), Dre and Vidal (Ciara, Chris Brown) and Rich Harrison (Amerie, Beyonce).

The song can be heard on their MySpace:

The song by Rich Harrison, "Do Ya", has since leaked, but I'm not sure if there's a newer version or not.

Pete Doherty Leaves Comatosed Cousin In The Street

After he Od's on smack...

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty has been accused of leaving his own cousin out in the street as he suffered from a heroin overdose.

What a great guy...

Doherty was ‘relaxing’ with hangers on after a gig in Aberdeen ended in chaos thanks to a fire alarm going off, when the alleged incident occurred.

According to the Sun, when Doherty found his cousin Mark Peter, 30 comatosed on a couch he panicked and warned that no one should call the police until they got him outside.

It appears that Doherty was more concerned about the police finding him in yet another compromising situation rather then for his cousin’s safety.

Instead of calling an ambulance and telling them the details, Doherty decided to tip of an ambulance about his ill cousin’s whereabouts…the pavement.

Mark told the paper: “I passed out on a couch and the next thing I recall is waking up in hospital. I know it wasn’t Pete who injected me.

“He’d just left the room and he just wouldn’t do that to me. The problem with Pete isn’t him but all his hangers on.”

Mark’s mother turned up at Aberdeen’s Music Hall after discovering who her son had gone to see.

A source said: “It was horrible. She had rushed to the venue after hearing that her son was meeting up with Pete.

“The last thing she wanted was her son – a former junkie – meeting Doherty - a known junkie.”

Those 'great' songs are starting to matter less and less as this guy unravells in front of our eyes, someone lock him in a room please!

It's Over...Again...Officially

On-again, off-again couple Nicole Richie and Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein are off again.

"We are confirming that we have amicably separated," the pair said in a statement released by Richie's publicist, Cindy Guagenti.

Richie, 24, and Goldstein, 33, began dating in 2004 and announced their engagement a year later in February 2005. But in early December, Richie's rep confirmed that the wedding was off.

But by March of this year, the pair were an item again, holding hands all over Los Angeles and even vacationing together at the Las Ventanas resort in Los Cabos, Mexico.

"They decided to try again," a friend told PEOPLE at the time. "They never stopped caring about each other." Although Richie hadn't put her engagement ring back on, the friend said, "they really are so happy together. ... It was only a matter of time before they got back together."

Richie even threw Goldstein a surprise 33rd birthday party at Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas recently, where she toasted him by saying, "This is (Adam's) eighth year of sobriety. I'm so proud of you. You've come so far and I love you so much."

On Wednesday, Goldstein was in New York City to DJ at the Entertainment Weekly Upfronts Party in New York. Said an observer: "He was keeping to himself at the party … but he was working. He didn't look particularly happy, but he could have just been concentrating."

Richie, meanwhile, is said to be at home in L.A. gearing up for a press tour promoting the new season of The Simple Life and working on her first album and a follow-up to her novel The Truth About Diamonds.

Richie recently blamed her dramatic weight loss on, in part, her December breakup with Goldstein. "I get really stressed out, and I do lose my appetite," she told Vanity Fair, adding that she's since sought professional help.

Lindsay Lohan Copes With Real-Life Tragedy On Set Of Tragic Film

She's written emotional songs about her troubled relationship with her father and crashed her car speeding away from paparazzi photographers, but Lindsay Lohan says she faced her darkest days while on the set of the upcoming movie "Bobby," which revolves around the 1968 assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Just as Lohan was preparing to film a traumatic scene in which her character's friend is shot during the Kennedy incident, one of the actress' real-life best friends, who suffered from meningitis, was also on the brink of death (see "Lohan's Grown-Up Roles Put Her At Big-Screen Crime Scenes"). Lohan had to choose between being on the set of the movie or at her friend's bedside, she reveals in the new issue of Interview magazine.

"Our families are best friends and she was like a cousin, so you can imagine," the actress told the magazine. "I was on the phone with her parents every single night, and just before she died, I wanted to fly back to see her so badly."

But the timetable for "Bobby" was tight — the filmmakers only had 35 days to shoot the project, which takes place over 16 hours on June 4 and 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The building, a crucial part of the story, was scheduled to be demolished by a wrecking crew and replaced with a school. Though director Emilio Estevez was able to shift some locations to another faded hotel, he was trying to get as many shooting days at the Ambassador as he could.

Then there was the issue of juggling the schedules of the cast's many big names, since the screenplay focuses on the guests and workers at the hotel the day of the shooting.

Anthony Hopkins plays the hotel's retired doorman, William H. Macy the hotel manager, Sharon Stone the manager's wife, Laurence Fishburne the chef, Heather Graham the phone operator and Christian Slater the food-and-beverage manager. Also present for the action are Elijah Wood, Martin Sheen, Helen Hunt, Demi Moore and Joshua Jackson.

Lohan plays a Kennedy volunteer named Diane who is getting engaged to Wood's character — though she's actually dating his brother — so he can avoid being sent to fight in the Vietnam War (see "Lindsay Lohan Falls For Elijah Wood In 'Bobby' ").

"Even though no one else died, a number of other people were shot as well," Lohan tells the magazine of the 1968 shooting, "so I had to stay and shoot it. My [real-life] friend ended up passing away that same day, so the scene is really personal for me. It was the most tragic one I've ever had to do and required the most acting. Other roles I've had didn't require as much acting, because my character was closer to my own age and experience. This time, I had to go to that darker place and use that for my work."

That work pays off, according to Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Co. just picked up "Bobby" for distribution and is already eyeing potential Oscars for the film. Weinstein approached Lohan and her manager about the role, saying along with her work in the upcoming "A Prairie Home Companion," she could do two Oscar campaigns this year ("That's what I've aspired to my whole life," Lohan tells Interview).

"She's fantastic, and a matter of fact, a big reason for getting me involved," Weinstein told MTV News. "This is going to be a stand-out performance this year for Lindsay, absolutely."

Calling "Bobby" an "important movie," Weinstein said that today's generation will be surprised to hear what Kennedy had to say. "When you hear his words, they're not going to believe that in this country, 40 years ago, there was a voice that dealt with all the issues head-on and wasn't full of political spin," Weinstein said. "And Lindsay speaks to that generation."

"She's a doll and a brilliant girl," Weinstein added. "People don't know that side of her; they just see [her] going out. If I was 19 and had that much — well, I went out way more than Lindsay Lohan, but no one was around to catch me."

"Bobby" opens November 22.

Movie lauded as first hit at 2006 Cannes film fest
Star Brad Pitt a no-show as he awaits baby's birth

May 24, 2006. 06:13 AM

If the reaction to the premiere press screening of 21 Grams director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is any indication, Babel would seem to be the 59th annual Cannes Film Festival's first towering hit.

As final credits rolled, many journalists were overheard pronouncing the movie the festival's hands-down best entry so far, and the subsequent press conference was barely minutes old before one reporter asked the Mexican-born director what he planned to say at his Palme d'Or acceptance speech.

"I have no speech prepared," he said with a smile. "My philosophy is low expectations and high serenity." While rumours persisted (as they tend to here) right up until the conference began that Brad Pitt, one of Babel's stars, would turn up for the premiere, the actor turned out to be one of the movie's few no-shows, but at least he had a cracking good excuse. He and his partner Angelina Jolie are expecting the birth of their first child at any moment.

Pitt sent a graciously worded email, which was read to the room before questions were taken from the media: "With the imminent arrival of the newest addition to our family, I am unable to join Alejandro, Cate, Gael and the rest of the cast and crew in introducing the film. I am tremendously proud of Babel, and want to congratulate everyone involved for this great achievement."

Inspired by the Old Testament story of the tower built by a united mankind to reach God, for which the world was punished by the creation of different languages and cultures, Babel tells a story of isolation, loneliness and ultimate reconciliation through the incidental linking of the experiences of several farflung characters.

The movie is set to open in North America later this year.

In addition to Pitt, it features a cast that includes both international stars — Cate Blanchett, Gael Garcia Bernal and the esteemed Japanese actor Koji Yakusho — and many non-professionals making first-ever appearances on camera.

Babel begins with an incident in the Moroccan desert that results in the accidental shooting, by two boys testing a rifle, of an American tourist on a bus. From that tragic but simple incident, which is immediately interpreted around the world as an act of terrorism, the lives of characters in countries as far-ranging as Japan, the United States and Mexico become connected by circumstances that underline the powerful sense of universal isolation that Inarritu believes is a condition of living in the so-called "connected" world.

As the intricately structured movie unfolds, it's not so much the apparent differences that exist among the characters — Pitt and Blanchett's stricken American couple; Adriana Barraza's illegally employed Mexican caregiver; Garcia Bernal as her reckless but well-intentioned nephew; and Yakusho and Rinko Kikuchi as a widowed Tokyo businessman and his deaf-mute teenage daughter — as what binds them that gives the movie its cumulative emotional power.

Dedicated to his own two children, Inarritu's movie struck a common chord even with a crowd as culturally dispersed as the one in Cannes. "The problem is not language," Inarritu said of the motivating concept behind the film. "The problem is the preconceptions we have of one another that keep us apart."

This was also why it was important for the filmmaker, who has once again collaborated with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga (Amores Perros, 21 Grams), to not only set the film in different cultures but to involve as many cast and crew members as possible in various locations in different countries.

While the process created considerable challenges during production, the result was a movie made in the very spirit it was designed to describe.

"I wanted this film to be about not what separates us but what gets us together," he explained.

Bernal, the Mexican actor whose international notoriety began with his appearance in Inarritu's breakout first feature, Amores Perros, underlined this point by stressing that most members of the cast hadn't even met each other before arriving for the Cannes press conference.

"We've talked more with you than with each other," he said. Yet the movie almost magically makes them part of a shared experience.

Blanchett, who had her two children with her during the gruelling Moroccan shoot, added that identifying with her character, who is accidentally wounded and may not live to see her family again, was easy.

"This film is all about connections between parents and children," said the actress, who sat during the press conference with 10 other members of the multinational cast, crew and various interpreters. "Which I think so many of us understand. It felt very personal for me.

"It's like pulling the roots of my system out and spraying them on the ground in front of me."

"I tried to show what is going on now with us," Inarritu said with a sweeping gesture to the room. "The way we're creating otherness. We see the other always as a threat. Being different means being dangerous.

"Not just countries against countries," continued the director, who lives in "self-exile" in Los Angeles, "but fathers against sons, husbands against wives. We are not able to listen any more, and I wanted to talk about that. The borders we have within ourselves.

"I tried to make a film that talked about prejudice without being prejudiced. That was my goal."
