The animal, named after the NBC "Today" show host, escaped Monday morning and spent several minutes running through a gated community in North Fort Myers, Fla.
The 6-month-old zebra made her big escape by jumping out of the back of a moving trailer.
"My wife hollered and said, 'There's a zebra in the back yard,'" said witness Tom Radcliff. "I couldn't believe her."
Shell Factory Zoo employees got the zebra back into its trailer after Charlotte County animal control Officer Kurt Truran caught it.
Zoo workers refused to comment on the incident and whisked the animal away.
Truran said he can't figure out how the escape happened.
"I don't see how it actually escaped, because they did take the necessary precautions to keep the animal contained," Truran said.
The zebra did suffer from injuries, officials said. She was bleeding from the mouth, had several abrasions and was limping.
The injuries were described as minor.
The zebra was on her way to North Carolina for breeding when she escaped.
