Tennant at TV Quick & TV Choice Awards, Barrowman on Out cover

At the awards Tennant said: "I'm having the time of my life making Dr Who and if people like it as much as they seem to, it really means the world to me."

He said he was sorry that his co-star Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate could not be at the ceremony but joked: "Someone has to look after the universe while Captain Jack and I are swanning around."

With his gong for Best Actor.

Best actor winner Tennant, who is expected to appear as Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Company next year, said he was "very excited and very scared" about his forthcoming stage role.

He added that he did not know if he would play Doctor Who in the next full series, because "it's in 2010".
