"Elvis" movie review

Double Toasted, one of the better media criticism YouTube sites(occasionally problematic but usually strong), gives an honest review of "Elvis".
It goes about like you would expect.
So, not for me. But not entirely negative. Austin Butler gets some kudos, Tom Hanks gets laughed at.

I'm seeing this on Friday with my unhinged Elvis stan mom. She HATES "the Colonel" to a passionate ONTD-worthy degree, it's great. It'll be an interesting day, at any rate.
IT IS SOOOO STUPID THERE’S NO ‘R’ in COLONEL.

lmfao I totally agree with you, but in this case the more glaring issue is that this dude was NOT a colonel or any kind of military person, he just gave himself that name because he was a weird scammer. My mom refers to him as "that Dutch carny."
My dad hates him too. He has a tone every time he mentions him lol
It’s Baz so I expect mixed reviews cause all his films get that type of reactions.

I will say that he does seem to capture the essences of his adaptations because I was pleasantly surprised that he got Priscilla, Lisa Marie, and Riley’s stamp of approval after they viewed the movie. And have been part of the press.

Similar happened with The Great Gatsby, one of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s granddaughters mentioned she was pleased with what Baz did.

It’s interesting cause not all living relatives or widows will be pleased with movie adaptations of their famous loved ones. So cool on Baz that he’s gotten their support.

Either way I’m looking forward. I can always count on Baz for a GOOD soundtrack.
The two original songs I heard from doja and ?? Felt a little shoehorned tbh
Alternatively, the approval of his family could also mean sanitation of the darker parts of his life. Like, you know, the whole pedophile thing.
Yeah that could be a factor but moreso I was thinking of how very factual or not, some family members would still disapprove of a film regardless.
Yeah, IA with the other poster, their approval really means really little to me because in order to get that approval, there are things he's avoided telling, like the fact that Elvis was a grown man preying on a 14 year old child. Familial approval just means that we're getting a squeaky clean version of his life -- see: MJ the Musical on broadway lol
The Great Gatsby is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Moulin Rouge, however, is one of my favourites.
Baz is so hit or miss for me.

He’s so ugly and pretentious.
And fuck Elvis.

It all evens out.
but does he die on the toilet after 4 months of constipation like irl??
ngl that story going viral recently got me to start eating better and getting more fiber w metamucil lmaooo
omg i dont care about elvis and my knowledge of him is confined to uncle jesse on full house, so this made me gasp and hit google real quick lol. i would be very upset if everyone knew i died that way but also FOUR MONTHS of constipation? lawd. idk how people do it, as a very regular person myself lmao. but also who doesnt go to the doctor if they haven't been shitting for that long??? i have so many questions
It took my grandfather after weeks and weeks of constipation to go to the doctor because my grandmother had just died and i think he was preoccupied and scared and had never regularly gone to the doctor anyway and it turns out he had colon cancer. I understand why people don't go even if i myself would go after like 3 days haha.

Bruh I just watched Ali Wong's latest comedy special and she unfortunately talked a lot about how she didn't shit for 6 weeks but didn't realize it until she went to the doctor bc her stomach was so bloated like she was pregnant. 😬

My younger brother spent about six-seven months having constipation issues. He went to the ER a couple of times and saw doctors and they never figured out what was wrong with him. It was so bizarre and to this day we don't know what triggered it, I assume maybe because he stopped drinking coffee and smoking cold turkey?

He's fine these days though. He was ill for about a year total.
I knew he died in the toilet but not the hairy details
FOUR MONTHS???!

I was so prepared for this movie to suck and be way too indulgent, since Baz Luhrmann is fucking nuts and doesn't really know when to quit sometimes. YET, for me, as a complete film its easily Baz's best work - a bizarre meeting of his chaotic nature as a filmmaker and huge respect for artistry and set pieces. It follows the cliches of the genre (which, for such a huge artist, it kind of has to? a classic tragedy) but also really lets Elvis live and breathe as a person through Austin Butler, who is absolutely something from start to finish. Tom Hanks is the weak link only because he's a swindler, so there's not a lot of depth because he doesn't change, but its a necessary villain against the rise and fall of an icon. He's not bad being bad, its just weird to see him be an old fashioned unlikable villain.
Does it got into how Elvis was a racist pedo?
Come on, you already know the answer to that. Geez.

No, wait for Lisa Marie and Priscilla to die for that movie
Why are we still making movies about predators
Seeing it this weekend! I generally like DT but I was disappointed by their EEAAO review.
the screencap is even worse. This dude wants an Oscar so bad… like, real baaaad to the point desperation reeks. It’s just so tragically sad.
he's probably going to get at least a nom though, the oscars eat this shit up
Would the Oscars confuse him with swifty's boyfriend like I do tho??
Does the movie portray the fact that he was a grown 24-year-old man when he met his wife who was 10 years younger than him?
🤮🤮🤮🤮
and the underage gworls he groomed?

I saw him up close (as his security was pushing me out of the way lmao) and yes I agree. He was looking very ~fresh faced~ in person
Aw he looked good before. So sad.
this is the movie tom hanks was in australia for in march when covid started popping off. that's all i can think of.
Oh wow, I forgot about how he and Rita got it so early
Same.
I live near where they were shooting this, and I still remember the news launching into the story that Hanks had COVID, accompanied by a neverending series of photos of him posing with fans on the beach when he was ABSOLUTELY contagious and just being like "D:..."
My mum reckons that David Wenham passed on some cold/flu to her a few years ago when they saw him at the chemist while they were at the Coast lmaooooo

lol that's right everyone was like "omg Tom Hanks brought COVID to Australia" (even though, iirc, he'd been here for a while when he got it and probably picked it up from someone else who came to do the movie? idk. it feels about a hundred years ago lmao)
this is the one! I went to the premiere at the Gold Coast (where they filmed the movie) and the cast said a few words before the screening and Tom Hanks was gushing over our most famous alcohol store Dan Murphys

ngl double toasted's twitch streams got me through the early part of the pandemic in 2020. corey once gave me a shout-out and good-naturedly made fun of my twitch name lol.

i have no interest in this at all and i try to watch as many new releases as possible. i think i'm just over biopics in general, especially since they're always about predators or gloss over the shitty things they've done.
The only thing I care about is the Toxic mashup
i watched it on tuesday and was so confused at what was happening...
do spoil sis!
