Heartwarming: The Worst Person You Know man did not know he was a meme



The famous image occured when Garcia's photog brother in law asked him to stand in a photograph so he could ajust for the light, and the image was uploaded to Getty Images Catalogue in 2014.

In 2018, his BIL got a notifcation that a 'satirical news site' used the image for their article. Of course, that site was the US-Based The Onion. Since the site is in English, his municipality near Barcelona weren't familiar with it, and didn't treat him differently.....

...Until a journalist dropped clues on how to find Garcia. He shrugged off some distasteful comments and proceeded to just live his life. The article is written oddly, as it begins to talk about another meme man halfway though.

But also that sounds like a nightmare for me on a personal level as a POC tho. I’d feel icky knowing about this bc some lowlife people truly ain’t shit ie catfishing others with your stolen selfies on the internet…. just horrifying….

This is one of many reasons why I don't care for actual people becoming Internet memes. Not everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame.

edit: Apparently the brother-in-law sold the image to Getty for their stock collection and The Onion bought the image to use in their article. Nothing wrong with that, but his beef should be with the BIL for submitting that photograph to Getty in the first place. There's a huge difference in "Can you pose for me real quick so I can get a light reading for my camera" and "I'm planning on submitting some of my images to a stock photography company; would you mind posing for me?"

The photo of García, then 34, turned out well – so well that the pair decided to upload it to the Getty Images catalogue.

Hope Garcia got some money from it at some point.

Whether or not he got paid depends on what sort of deal the BIL has with Getty; for some of their photography they pay a one time commission while with others it's commission by how much the image gets sold.

It was confusing the way they wrote it but András Arató (Hide behind the pain Harold) is who started the FB page. It sounds like Garcia is just resigned to it.

Garcia isn't the one who has a FB travel page and commercial, that's "Hide the Pain Harold" who is also mentioned in the article. Garcia has mostly avoided the spotlight but "mulls launching t-shirts that feature the meme".
