Taemin To Complete Military Service As Public Service Worker Due To Depression And Anxiety

Shinee member, SuperM member and solo artist Taemin began mandatory military service in May. Soon there were rumours that he was having problems with other soldiers allegedly trying to snap pictures of him at all times and staring at him in the shower. The situation allegedly got so bad that the army allegedly opened a very rare exception so that he could shower at a different time from the other soldiers.

Shortly after that the army produced a promotional video of military life with Taemin, smiling and saying how great military life was, praising the food, etc.

Now it has been confirmed that Taemin has been suffering from worsening depression and panic disorder and will be unable to continue serving in his current post in Military Band, being transferred to an auxiliary corps as a public servant.

i hope this gives him the ability to take better care of himself :( and i hope netizens aren't being too hard on him
That's disturbing and awful :( I hope working as a public servant is better for his mental health.
Yeah, hopefully! I believe as a public service worker, he gets to go home after work, so his family and band mates can hopefully take care of him and give him the support he needs to get through this.

I am glad they made an exception, it must have been very difficult for Taemin. I am not so sure about the video that has been released by the military though, me thinks this is a way for them to cover their backs and go 'Look! he is okay! he loves the food!' It may very well be true but I guess all the abuse I read, heard of and seen depicted in shows like D.P makes me look at it all askance.

Man, if it is this bad for Taemin, how is going to be for the BTS members? Sheesh.
I think BTS members are supposed to be exempt?

Like there was some controversy b/c they became eligible for that. I think they announced it in 2020
They aren't exempt, they were just granted extra time to postpone past the usual age that is allowed. Basically delaying the inevitable lol. Some still want a full exemption for them but it hasn't been passed.

Oh they are not exempt. The amount of time they have to enlist has been extended but they are not exempt. Only people like Olympic medallists get automatic exemption, there was some debate if they qualified for this because of their contribution to Korean culture and economy but it wasn't agreed.
They just got an extension. I think by the extension's rules, Jin at least has to enlist by the end of this year?
honestly when they do go, I think bts members will have a harder time in the military because of all the extensions they got
I dread to think what will happen to the BTS members. Their every move will be under surveillance unless they serve as public service workers

Yeah after watching D.P. and other depictions of the mandatory military service in Prison Playbook and Stranger.... like I know they're not documentaries, but it still seems like an super corrupt and toxic environment that has a negative impact on the lives of the men forced to serve.

Not saying the BTS members won't struggle in it, but Taemin was suffering prior to enlisting and it exacerbated the situation. Maybe he was getting bullied and abused but we don't know that. idk I don't like how I've seen so many people on Twitter make this about BTS so I'm sensitive about this. Taemin's struggles are only his and no one else's.

I'd be extremely surprised if they don't get exempt.

i read about this last night. my heart aches for him, but i'm glad that he's getting professional help.

also, this reminded me that i need to make a new taemin icon. 📝

eta: i hadn't read about the photographs and shower thing, jfc... people are awful.
There were rumors that other soldiers during boot camp were texting relatives gossiping about him too and saying he couldn’t do hard work and when he ate, it was alone. I was sad for him because the military had to be such an overwhelming situation for someone who’s been involved in idol things since he was 11.

The same thing happened to GD too. Someone even drew out a diagram of his body and marked out all his tattoos. Can't even shower in peace wtf
He seemed absolutely miserable from the beginning. I feel so bad for him. It was so clear he didn't want to go. I am glad that SM is prioritizing his health. Does that mean he has to serve longer now?
I don't see why he'd have to serve longer. He is still serving just not in the same way as before.
Public service workers have to serve a longer time than active duty. I think it only adds a few months tho.

public service takes longer than serving in the military

He was nearly halfway through his normal service, so I hope they'll take that into account. :(
I’m glad he was able to go to public service and I’m glad he’s getting support for his depression and panic disorder. I hope the rest of his military service will go better :(
Also it’s so fucked up that they produced a video of him “enjoying” military life after reports came out he was absolutely miserable and had no privacy :/
it is incredibly fucked up. immediately when that video came out I wondered if they made a deal with him that he would get private showers in exchange for doing a bunch of promotional stuff (in addition to the video, there were several photo ops)
This makes me so sad. :( I really hope this new environment and being able to see his family, friends, and kitty more often helps him out. The article that came out about the other enlistees discussing details of his medication and the like was really upsetting. I hope he can heal in privacy now.
that's just so upsetting. Like it's bad enough he was having a bad time but they're even sharing his medication :(
Exactly :(
Seriously? That's horrible if it's true.
Oh wow. Hope he’s alright and staying strong! What’s with people in there? No chill…

Asking q: It’s that bad in the military? like long term duration of time being there and getting assigned to work in a sector? I’m curious about that whole stuff
It's quite bad for a lot of people.

Was about to ask if this is literally the reason why no one wanted to do it, right? So many questions
I was sad to see he was having such a difficult time :(
heartbreaking :(. i couldn't even watch videos of his lives that people said he was clearly emotional with his coming enlistment.

ppl shouldn't downplay the consequences of enlistment. it's not time off/vacation for anyone.
random anecdote but ive read a lot of stories about korean esports players who get into esports bc after enlisting they feel like they "missed out" on their way into society. also stories regarding the opposite, where esports players consider when they have to enlist the moment theyll have to retire cause once they're out, they won't be able to catch up to the new talent. that's just esports, never mind how compulsory enlistment affects all other facets and corners in life.
There's a lot of Starcraft 2 players that are having a hard time coming back to par because the game changed so much while they enlisted. It's been interesting to watch a few players come back and compete. But it really isn't many. One of my faves just left.
bless his sweet soul, i hope he's going to be okay through all this ;--;

Oh, no! Hope he gets better.

Oh no! I am glad he is getting help and support. ❤️ And I’m glad he is able to do public service for the rest of his enlistment.
It is fucked up that he wasn't a social worker from the start considering his depression and panic syndrome and of course it got worse these, SM can go to hell over this, I feel really bad for him and I am worried, December must have been hard enough already
I wonder if they didn't apply for public service from the beginning bc they didn't want to disclose anything about his mental health. kibum served in the band so they might have thought it would be bearable for taemin also. I'm devastated he has been suffering so much
