Stephen Sondheim Dies at 91

The hugely influential composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim died today at age 91. He celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday with friends, so his death has been described as sudden.

It's hard to overstate his contributions to the theater: his work includes West Side Story, Gypsy, Assassins, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods.

His work is currently being produced on Broadway (Company), Off-Broadway (Assassins), and on screen (Steven Spielberg's upcoming West Side Story). Bradley Whitford recently played him in a small role in Netflix's tick... tick... Boom!, and he cameod in the film himself via a voicemail. It's clear that he will live on through his work.
