“Best actress is firmly on Lady Gaga & Kristen Stewart, Alana Haim could be that shocker waiting in the wings for ‘Licorice Pizza.’ She faces heavy competition to get ahead of established actresses, but these types of roles have been recognized before.”— Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) November 14, 2021
• Kristen Stewart has dominated the Best Actress conversation for months thanks to her turn as Princess Diana in Neon's Spencer, though the reviews for Lady Gaga's turn in MGM's House of Gucci have led to some to start speculating on her chances of a nomination and win come March. But more actresses are starting to enter the race. Other early reviews single out her performance as the most exciting in the film.
• Alana Haim (yes that Haim) is receiving rave reviews for her first role in Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza. A review for The Hollywood Reporter said that she "makes one of the most exciting screen debuts in recent memory," and that she provides "an incandescent presence that marks the arrival of a fully formed screen star."
• Early reactions to Amazon's Being the Ricardos are also building buzz for Nicole Kidman. She received a standing ovation at a recent screening with SAG members and the reactions included raves for Kidman's performance. Another THR reviewer tweeted that it erased initial doubts that Kidman could play Lucille Ball.
