Raeden Greer Says She Was Fired from True Detective by Cary Fukunaga for Refusing to Appear Nude

Raeden Greer was cast in True Detective when she was 24 under the contractual clause that there would be no nudity involved.

After receiving the script and noticing that the role involved a bit of dancing, she wanted to make sure the role did not require her to be nude:

“So, I started asking after that, like, ‘To be clear, there’s no nudity involved in this role, right?’” Greer recalls. “I kept getting the answer from my agent and from casting—no, that would be absolutely unheard of if they asked you to do nudity after it wasn’t disclosed. There was no rider, there was no negotiating this into your contract, that would not happen, so stop asking about it because it’s making you look amateurish.’ So, I was like, ‘OK, I’m gonna quit worrying about it.’”

When she showed up to set, she found only a set of pasties and a thong for her to wear. She asked a PA on set to get someone for her to talk to because she was "extremely uncomfortable" about the situation - which is when Fukunaga arrived and pulled her aside:

“Cary said to me at that moment, ‘Everybody on this show goes topless. All the women on the show go topless. Your character is a stripper, so you have to,’” Greer said.

“He was trying different things to convince me that it’s not a big deal,” she said. “It [was] going to be very tasteful, or it’s just gonna be really insignificant in the background. I was like, ‘Well, if it’s so insignificant, why is he so insistent that I have to do this?’ It was just on and on and on with no budging.”

After heading back to her trailer, another producer told her she had been replaced.

Greer takes issue with Fukunaga's "feminist" approach to promoting and talking about the new James Bond film he worked on:

“And now, Cary is out here talking about his female characters—it’s like another slap in the face over and over and over,” Greer said of Fukunaga’s shift. “Yes, he has had an illustrious career—that was a star-maker for him, and what happened to me? Nobody cares.”

“That was the human element that was missing that is so hurtful to me, that you could just look at somebody—a young girl who is starting out in her career who doesn’t want to show everything she’s got naked on camera spur of the moment, and you can’t understand that?” Greer said. “He knew that he wasn’t doing [it] above board. He knew.”

I just watched this show for the first time over the summer and I am not surprised the creator/director of it is a sexist asshole. all the women were shells and there to serve the male characters and have their tits out. it was so male gazey & toxic, which I know is supposed to make it more ~"real"~ but I hated it and don't understand the praise at all lol
It was really boring imo. I got through a few episodes before deciding I didn’t care to finish it. Stories about dark and brooding men are simply very boring.
i really enjoyed the whodunit mystery and the southern gothic vibes, but yes, the levels of misogyny were almost suffocating at times which is very ??? considering that the whole season was literally about [Spoiler (click to open)]a sex-trafficking ring?
The nudity was so gratuitous, it was ridiculous. The whole show was ridiculous. I'm convinced the hype over that stupid show is why McConaughey won the Oscar over Chiwetel Ejiofor and I'm still mad about it.
Incidentally, both of their movies (and TD) were shot in and around the New Orleans area at the same time. I had just moved there and was doing a lot of background stuff. I got a casting notice for that group sex scene in Dallas Buyers Club, but it was being filmed on my birthday, and I didn't want to do nudity. This barista I knew ended up booking it. In retrospect, what an amazing story that would have been; getting all gross and sweaty with an emaciated Matthew McConaughey and that dude from Claws in some grimy washed out motel room while being directed by Jean Marc Vallee on my 27th birthday. Oh, what could have been...

i only watched a couple episodes and found it really boring but yeah all the women seemed so empty for the few seconds they were on screen. i feel like dead women we're on it more than alive women (that's a sad sentence) but, like i said, i only saw a few episodes and it was a long time ago so maybe im remembering it wrong.
ita I really enjoyed the first season as a whole but the misogyny stopped me from loving it
The way Alexandra Daddario was shot was so incredibly gratuitous and the most male gazey shit I’ve ever seen. Like, it was clear to me from those scenes that everybody on that set was salivating over her having to be naked.
What pisses me off is that thus far the only story I'd heard was the director (this asshole) saying he got a note from HBO to include boobs. Like he wasn't originally going to be shooting like this and then the HBO head creep got involved.

But now there's this story and Fukunaga was full of shit the whole time.

The actress makes a very good point of referring to the Bond promotion which I found very sus even before this story. And the Napoleon news was clearly released to cover this up.

But joke's on them 'cause I only found this post thru that thread, so ontd strikes again.
How can someone say "all the women on this show go topless" and not see how problematic that is
women not people. women objects.
men fucking looooooove that they can hide that kind of shit behind the shield of ~choice feminism~ these days lol
#freethenipple

(lol not that I disagree that women's boobs are needlessly sexualized. i am just very sus of men who are super gung ho about it.)
No because Matthew McConaughey was ALSO shirtless in one scene, so its all about balance. #thefuturewillbeequal
COUGH GOT COUGH
This is why men who pat themselves on the backs for being such feminists~ are not to be trusted (see also: Joss Whedon)
That’s literally nothing but a red flag for me tbh lmao like them proclaiming that is my cue to wait for something like this to be exposed about them
+ matthew weiner
Yeah they probably have super powers when it comes to gas lighting cause they think they know the ~discourse
between this and the last post where he said he still hangs out with aziz, this man is a GARBAGE DUMP
Never gotten the thirst for him. Another asshole in the sea of them.
Don't forget his penchant for yooooooooung actresses.
Men are gonna men
/endpost

Had to double check this wasn’t a comment I left earlier
The first true detective had a lot of gratuitous nudity. (i don't know about the others cause I never watched them)
So does this mean we can stop with the thirst posts about this one hit wonder
Thank. You.
This! 🙏
PLS & THXU
Is this your king?
was she replaced by the girl from the white lotus?
No I think she was already on the show. It's mentioned in the article that Greer was aware that Daddario had been nude on the show before her.
so many of alexandra daddario's roles make a focus of her body and specifically her boobs, it makes me sad even if she's cool with it

Is Cary also a creep? There was a DM blind about a creep director with a preference for young girls and a lot of people's minds went straight to him. I haven't really heard much apart from white Michelle Williams and Margaret Qualley though
+ kristine froseth, who i thought was 12 when i first clicked her profile 🙃
Some days you just really need a grimace emoji, cos 😬
didn't he date Emma Watson when she was pretty young? am I making that up?

A user here spilled saying that he was allegedly hooking up with extras on the set of True Dective and his dating history since white michelle has been VERY questionable tbh.

I remember some tea here abt him taking girls to fuck at an abandoned six flags (?) near the set when he wasn’t a director yet

Does anyone else remember this?! I hope my memory is somewhat right

Also dated Imogen Poots around the Jane Eyre era — when she was 21.

I remember as I loved her back in the day and was surprised at the age difference, I think it was only 12 years but still significant.
We really need to remember that men see women as objects, not fully human people.
You really come to understand that if you're not conventionally attractive cause you're basically invisible to men.
Yep.
Yes, ma'am!
The studies done about women and objectification were actually about how sexual attraction makes men see you as less human.

So the guy that ignores you is being honest, the guy who is attracted to you? He's the one who doesn't view you as a fully human person.

So true. I'm okay with being what they call "sex negative" even tho that's a stupid term for it and inaccurate. When Audrey wollen said she's sex negative I felt better, even though she's a nepotism child

This is so depressing but true. I’m convinced that the majority of men just do not see women as fully human and our sole relevance to their lives is whether or not they want to fuck us

Damnit Cary. I thought you were some sort of a super chill laidback dude. Damn…
I've been waiting for something to come out about him because decent respectful directors are rare. Almost all of them have asked an actor to do something sus or dangerous in the name of having their "vision" come to life.
You’re right, that’s true
so stop asking about it because it’s making you look amateurish

lol the way that women are consistently told to shut up about sexual harassment and assault lest they be considered ~unprofessional

shocking how the men terrorizing them are never considered the ones out of line!

but yeah yeah sure sure hollywood is Feminist now because ~post-me too~ male allies such as this condescend to spare a fraction of their bloated blockbuster’s screentime to (conventionally attractive) (partially or entirely undressed) women between their busy schedules of fucking old soul 20-somethings rme
That they would tell her to stop asking questions about her own body being displayed is disgusting in of itself and then to make her feel shamed for it. Ugh.
Reading this made me so queasy, god I hate men so much. Hopefully she isn’t blacklisted or harassed for speaking out.
