Adele Claims She Can't Afford to Live in London

Poor Adele! She recently purchased three houses in Los Angeles for a total of $30 million, but London was simply too expensive for her!

According to her, “The kind of house I have in L.A. I could never afford in London. Ever.”

Her homes in L.A. total 18,000 square feet (5,486 meters) combined. She simply couldn't settle for 17,000 square feet in London!

Can you afford real estate in your city, ONTD?

Yes, I already own property you peasant

Oh poor baby I don’t qualify for any apartments in my area because I don’t make three times the income so like fuck off Adele
I had to get my parents who don't pay a dime of my rent (nor should they, nor do they need to) to co-sign for me. It's so fucking ridiculous lol. It's like if I was making three times the rent don't you think I would be buying and not renting????
landlords are so fucking uppity right now. having a hard time myself rn, good luck
LOL apartments in my area are anywhere between 7x-10x my annual income.

Sydney real estate is fucked.
she broke from that divorce. literally pobrecita
OK, I love her and usually she seems sensibly down-to-earth, but...girl. Who are you kidding.
Damn that Ben Simmons holdout is hurting Adele's coin too it seems.
I burst out laughing at this and scared my cat. Saw this tweet last night but I had no one to share it with because none of my friends know sportsball:

I saw this tweet last night and it took me out 😂

She's completely clueless how privileged she sounds when she talks about money. I remember she got backlash a couple years ago when she complained about having to pay taxes.
I was just going to say—it sounds like she prefers that the US doesn't tax the way the UK does.
Idk anything about Adele's political leanings so I'm honestly just asking---is she a Tory?
She claims to be a labour voter. But she sounds like the kind of labour voter who cares about LGBTI/women's rights but doesn't actually want to help poor people.
She’s not, people misconstrue that tax quote when she was clearly annoyed by the lack of funding for communities etc and wondering where the tax money actually goes.

Y’all really need to stop misrepresenting that tax quote, she complained because the government isn’t actually putting that money into making anything better for communities or people. Not because she just doesn’t want to pay them.

cardi b did the same thing and everyone here agreed with her lmao
She did lol, I don’t know where people on here are getting that she was just concerned about the state of the country, her comments were 100% her having a little rant about how much tax she has to pay now, and yeah most people weren’t all that sympathetic as having millions to pay in tax is not seen as such an awful problem to have
lol my fam is still like that, even though my gg grandma from Ireland has been dead 90 years 😂

I can't even express how this gif usage literally made my night. Bless you and everyone and everything you love 💜
Lol this is my husband's Northern Irish family. My mother in law made the restaurant take down the English flag when we rented out a room for our rehearsal dinner. She was very polite about it.

this is the greatest response that could have ever existed. thank you.
I love how I can hear this gif, especially the "FOOKIN," god I love this show
I live in toronto so lol. I will never have a house
same.
same!
I live in Hamilton which has reached Toronto prices so I can’t imagine what it’s like for you
lmao yeah I'll get a shoebox condo if I'm "lucky"
...it's so extremely insane not just in the GTA but every where we've looked. even the kitchener and Guelph areas, the pickering and Ajax areas...it's just. straight up insanity imo

a 1400 sq foot stacked condo townhouse down the street just sold for 850k this week, 150k over asking. my husband and I are still in a bit of shock over it. (we're in mississauga) esp since even the most updated houses here have "only" gone for I think 675 this year.

good luck! (I do mean it)
i'm in burlington so same.
Can't afford Austin anymore.
I was evacuated in Austin for Ida and the whole city seemed like it was building brand new buildings all over, so I could see how it could get expensive. And one of my friend’s sister was trying to buy in Austin at that time because there was a rumor Elon Musk was going to move there (obviously true) and she wanted to buy before he could drive up the prices.
I'm in Austin temporarily and staying with a friend who bought a house last November. It recently appraised for $150k more than she paid for it, and it's not even in Austin proper! Absolutely insane.

Well shit. I’m due to graduate soon and I’m eyeing some jobs in certain cities I want to live in and seems like every one of them just got super expensive all of a sudden.
Hell, the Georgia town I live in right now isn’t anything to write home about but I had to move out of my apartment and back in with a family member recently because rent prices were going up in hundreds by the year. As someone who is young and still getting used to learning about how the housing market works, WTF is going on?

I wanted to live there for years. Now I wouldn't anyway because, lol, Texas, but I also know I couldn't afford it.
same. I'm saving up to move outta here but i just don't know where yet. I'm afraid I'll move somewhere else and the same gentrification shit will happen too.
a tour would buy her another house

Because real estate in LA is known to be so affordable….That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised that real estate in London was more expensive, it would make sense to me.

And yes, I do own a condo, but my parents paid the down payment, that’s the only way I could afford it and I know I’m in a small group of very lucky people in that respect. If I am ever able to afford an actual stand alone house, it will be because of what I will inherit when my dad passes, and again I know how lucky I am. My mom invested very well and very aggressively, and when she passed earlier this year, she left us in good shape. I’d still rather have her but i am grateful.
Nothing wrong with accepting family money as long as you're not clueless or a dick about it, bb!
MTE. What bothers me isn't that people get things from their parents but when they don't acknowledge the help they've gotten and how it isn't accessible to everyone.

There are parts of MD, especially close to Baltimore/in Baltimore that are more affordable than the rest of the state, but there are obviously trade offs in terms of space, noise pollution, and convenience. I'm renting in an area that's safe, quiet, and affordable but it's also boring as fuck.

I want to buy here in MD, but right now we rent in Montgomery County and everywhere is sooo expensive :'( We can't move far from the DMV area since our jobs are here and in DC :'(
My brother and his wife live in MD and it's so expensive. They had to put off buying a house for the time being. :(
She also complained about rich people's taxes being high. So.

Boo fucking hoo

I wanted to find the context of this comment, so I figured I'd drop it here in case anyone else was curious:

Really, she says, the LA move was for quality of life. “Most of my life is in a car or inside a building,” she says; the lot of the famous. “I wanted fresh air and somewhere I could see the sky. Also, once I had Angelo, in England if you haven’t got a plan with a young child and it’s raining, you’re f**ked. And the kind of house I have in LA I could never afford in London. Ever.” I mean, you probably could, no? “No, I looked at houses. It’s like hundreds of millions of pounds. I don’t have that much money at all. I’d throw up.”

But yeah, I live in LA and can't currently afford a house. I hope we'll be able to at some point, but the way prices have absolutely skyrocketed here over the past few years is super depressing. All I want is a 2bd, 1.5ba SFH, but it's hard to find houses like that, and when you do, they are either teardowns or superficial renos for a million bucks. :/
Heaven forbid she just...gets a smaller home in London.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how her kid would survive in a house without 30 bathrooms or whatever, and rain must really disrupt parenting when you're wealthy, I'm sure I'm sure. Sounds like a nightmare.
I mean, celebs buy "smaller" condos/apts all the time in major metropolitan areas. But she was drawing a direct comparison to what she has in LA.

It's a trade-off: pay more to live in a place like London that's walkable in a smaller place or have more space and live in a sprawl like LA. Sometimes, I look at what I paid for in NYC and pay for now in the DMV area and what I get, then compare that to what I could get in San Diego or LA for the same. Both still expensive, but definitely larger and better accommodations.
this is even worse in context lmao

in England if you haven’t got a plan with a young child and it’s raining, you’re f**ked.

because you have to actually pay attention to the kid? millions of people live in apartments with kids, so fucking what

"Most of my life is in a car or inside a building,”"

Now I've been to LA, and depending on where she lives (probably off the main streets, gated community, lot of property)....I don't see the big difference besides London is at least walkable, where I never got that impression in LA. You can't quite pop out of your house and dash to the tube, can you?

Does LA even have subways.

Or in Palmdale *shudder*
The reason it's more expensive in London is we're built up and have a far higher population than LA, houses are not as ridiculously large in the UK. Houses in London are on average less than half the size they are in LA. A house of a similar size to one in LA is far less common and therefore the cost of the house will reflect the rarity.
yes, i imagine an 18,000 square foot estate would be more in london.

Anyway, no i can't afford a home. :( I wish they made small homes still. The smaller older homes here are so much more expensive then they were a couple years ago.
