Strong reviews precede the release of Halsey's 'If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power'

Halsey will release their fourth studio album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power, tomorrow, and if early reviews are anything to go by listeners won't be disappointed. The album, produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, currently holds a Metascore of 77 based on six critic reviews.

"The record itself has a tight, internal focus: It's about walking the line between self-preservation and self-destruction, control and compulsion, the thrill and terror of getting what you want. Instead of sieving these themes through an elaborate architecture, Halsey lets horror—of the body, of the mind, of mortality—radiate outward. The result is alluring and spectral. It's their best work yet." ★★★½ —Pitchfork

"While the album is rooted in this chapter of Halsey's life, inextricably connected to their experience with pregnancy and childbirth, the story is still their own. They are not reducing themself to Halsey (new parent), but asserting themself as Halsey (musician/mother/filmmaker/whatever comes next)." ★★★¾ —Consequence
[Review]

"... a definite power-up from an artist who carries, as promised, 'a knife with the heart on my sleeve.'" ★★★★ —The Independent
[Review]

"If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power doesn't contain sweeping declarations that untangle the Gordian knots of motherhood or impermanence, nor can one really expect it to. Halsey is processing the beauty and brutality of such experiences, and that's an impressive kind of labor on its own." ★★★½ —Rolling Stone
[Review]

"...any accolades Halsey may earn for their latest work won't be because of the men they're working with, it will be because they're a maverick... they present a masterclass in songwriting and production overflowing with a seductive industrial canvas as well as noise-rock, punk choruses, and fuzzed-out guitars." ★★★★½ —Spin
[Review]
