Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy took the top spot this weekend with a higher-than-expected $28.4 million. With Delta concerns on the rise regarding theater-going, estimates for the film were hovering around $20 million. Reynolds says Disney is so impressed with the film they already want a sequel. Audiences were equally impressed, giving it an A on Cinemascore.
Horror sequel Don't Breathe 2 took 2nd with $10.6 million and landed a B Cinemascore, followed by Jungle Cruise at 3rd with $9 million. Jennifer Hudson's Aretha Franklin biopic Respect followed with $8.8 million. Like Free Guy, Respect also landed an A Cinemascore.
Last week's top film The Suicide Squad landed with a 5th place thud at $7.5 million, a 71% drop from last weekend. *Black Widow breathes a sigh of relief*
Total box office is estimated around $75 million, a nice $10 million boost from last week.
Coming next weekend: Annette on Amazon, Hugh Jackman's Reminiscence in theaters and HBO Max, The Paw Patrol Movie, Maggie Q's The Protege, and the Sean Penn directed Flag Day.
