Shailene Woodley covers the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, in a series of retro-styled photos by Sasha Samsonova. In the accompanying interview, she discusses battling a "physically dominating" illness, her relationship with Green Bay Packer Aaron Rogers and The Last Letter from Your Lover, her new film premiering on Netflix July 23.
• On the intricacies of womanhood: "There's so many stories out there right now about strong, empowered females. I laugh when I read these stories because maybe I know literally two strong, empowered females out of all of my friends and myself included. My hope is that more stories come out that explore the intricacies of what feminine energy looks like and not just this desire to represent females from a strong, empowered standpoint. Because there's a lot underneath there that's messy, jealous, conspiratorial, competitive, kind, mothering, generous, thoughtful. There are so many aspects to it that I hope continue to be explored deeper."
• On love: "I love love so much. I love romance films, whether the old cheesy ones or the huge blockbuster ones or the super indie nuanced ones. I hope that Last Letter is able to join that brigade, making people feel a yearning and a lust and a desire for life and a desire for emotion even when they’re on their couch at home."
• On Big Little Lies' third season: "We all constantly say, 'When are we doing season three? How do we make that happen?' I'd like to say, knock on wood, that it is happening. The biggest thing is everyone's schedules and getting the scripts written and just making a commitment."
