Happy Pride Month: UEFA forbids Munich mayor from displaying rainbow flag colours for Hungary match

Viktor Orban said panem et circenses! Hungary’s shitty government has been investing heavily in sports, especially football, going all out to build new facilities and training schools, making sure the Puskas Arena was filled to capacity for Hungary’s home matches, and turning the crowds into a populist display of far-right symbols and anti LGBT+ banners.

Coincidentally, they’ve also been passing legislation that bans the dissemination of pro-LGBT+ material in schools, tackling the provision at the end of an anti-pedophilia bill to make it harder to vote against it.

Germany will be playing Hungary tomorrow at Allianz Status in Munich, and Munich mayor Dieter Reiter wrote to UEFA asking for permission to lit up the stadium in rainbow colours in solidarity with the Hungarian LGBT+ community. Nice of him! UEFA, who have been involved in many campaigns promoting diversity and inclusion in football, said no. The European football association justified the ruling claiming that the context of the specific request makes it too political (“Thanks God” said Hungary’s foreign minister).

It was a pretty quick decision by UEFA, who are taking their sweet time to condemn Hungary for the discriminatory incidents at their own matches. On the bright side (?) Germany’s captain Neuer was cleared to keep wearing his rainbow armband for the rest of the competition after another investigation, so there's that.
