ONTD Original: The Messy History of BTS

It's funny what being accused of xenophobia does to my level of passive-aggressiveness. If you've been around ONTD recently, you've probably heard of BTS, the Korean boy group whose fans manipulate the charts to get a #1 on the Hot 100 in place of actual hits by artists such as Olivia Rodrigo or Megan Thee Stallion. BTS are also well known for their fans. Like all fanbases today, BTS stans have a name for themselves. They call themselves ARMY. Now personally, I only regularly listen to one Kpop song (Blackpink's Kill This Love) so I'm sure ONTD Kpop fans have more incidents that they will be able to add.

However, due to ARMY consistently spamming Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr (and ONTD) with photos, gifs, and videos to praise BTS, a lot of their problematic behavior gets buried. And OH BOY, is there a lot of it!

In fact, there's so much of it that there's multiple YouTube videos AND a whole Twitter account devoted to messy things that BTS has done without apologizing for! Here is one such example:

1. A long history of racism and cultural appropriation

Originally, I was going to include several specific examples, but there are just way too many and I'm not about to spend three days writing about BTS. So instead I've included a SEVENTEEN MINUTE LONG Youtube video that breaks down many of their problematic behaviors - derogatory remarks, cultural appropriation, and so on.

2. When commenting on how one of his bandmates looks when tan, BTS member Jimin used a derogatory Korean word.

I think this is included in the first video, but I wanted to include this because this is the tweet that inspired this post. Additionally, this same member also once told another member that they look like a "Maori clan chief."

3. BTS calls out chart manipulation
While this is not particularly messy, I still wanted to include it because it's currently relevant. In 2020, while accepting an award at the Golden Disc awards, BTS called out chart manipulation among Kpop artists.

“We’ve had such a happy year last year, working hard and getting rest,” the group’s leader RM said as the group went on stage to receive the awards. As he recalled the first time the group met its producer Bang Si-hyuk, in 2010, he looked back on the decade.
“For the new decade of the 2020s, we will always stand together with our fans, Army. We will cherish every one of our fans,” he said.
He also addressed allegations of chart manipulation by some artists. “I hope those artists’ honest efforts will reach out to the audiences in a fair and just way,” he said

Very, very interesting...

4. Plagiarism Accusations
BTS has, without a doubt, the MOST plagiarism accusations I have ever seen from a group. (Think Taylor Swift's Getaway Car blatantly plagiarizing Hilary Duff's Breathe In. Breathe Out.)

This YouTube video covers all of the times that BTS has been accused of plagiarism. BTS has been accused of ripping off a variety of artists, both Kpop acts and Western artists, such as Fergie, Ellie Goulding, DJ Snake and Lil John, Coldplay, and even Miss Taylor Swift herself.

Honestly, I could include more incidents, but there are just so many. As I said, I don't really follow Kpop, so I am positive there are many more incidents that I am unaware of. There are multiple YouTube videos, Twitter accounts, Tumblr posts, etc. that discuss more of the problematic things that BTS has done. As I mentioned, this behavior consistently gets buried within the mountain of spamming that ARMY posts. Because ARMY tries to bury their problematic behavior, there are a lot of people who have no idea about these incidents.
