Kristen Bell on Dax Shepard, Pandemic Depression and Raising Anti-racist Children

  • She is the breadwinner in her marriage to Dax Shepard, and has no desire to coddle him about it. They also schedule sex and don't have a prenup.

  • She encouraged her kids to share their feelings but would remind them, "we have the luckiest life you have ever heard of. You have a swimming pool in your backyard."

  • Her mental health spiraled during the pandemic (she has experienced anxiety and depression since eighteen), resulting in her sobbing in bed until her husband confronted her. "Hey, real quick, are you helping anyone right now by sitting and crying in your bed, or are you just being self-indulgent? Either get up and donate money or donate your time or do something to help, or take that story in, give it some love, and come out here and be a good mom and a good wife and a good friend and live your life in honor of the suffering that happens in the world.’” Bell had an understandable response: “‘How dare you?’ But also, ‘You’re right.’”

  • She relied on pilates and CBD for coping, as well as knitting and puzzling. She also took a break from her "pod," which includes her Veronica Mars costar Ryan Hansen.

  • Speaking of Veronica Mars, she stands by the controversial reboot ending of killing off Veronica's longtime love Logan.
"There’s only so long you can play out a love affair…and let me tell you, people were angry that we killed Logan. I’m still proud of the way that we did it. I thought we matured it. Same thing with Frozen II." Veronica Mars was not renewed for a season five.

  • After Dax's relapse on painkillers, he bought some drug tests and gives Kristen permission to test him whenever she wanted. When asked about smoking weed around Dax, she praises Shepard: “He’s just good at trying, and that’s all you can ask of anyone."

  • Bell and Shepard are united in a mission to raise socially conscious, antiracist kids in the privileged bubble of Hollywood. They've renamed hangman as fullman in their house to avoid lynching comparisons.

  • She feels lucky about not experiencing negativity in Hollywood and is happy people have found joy in her products during the pandemic.

Jesus just leave this loser ass nigga. I’m tired and I’ve never even met melted wax doll Zac Braff.
I can't stand him, especially after that quote. Fuck him.
Melted wax doll Zach Braff is now something I cannot unsee 😂

I fucking hate Dax Shepard. Anxiety and depression has nothing to do with being a good person, your status, your money.

She should've stopped at "how dare you". I can't wait until she leaves his ass. He seems fucking abusive.

It’s super early and raw. I just downed a tall can of Red Bull Sugarfree and then saw this post. So many things I just... softly gasped at:

- Scheduled sex with no prenup
- Whitest privilege card at play just so to remind the kids that they have a swimming pool in the backyard should consider themselves "luckiest". All while skooling them on becoming antiracist. Dem kids def are going in some heavy therapy sessions.
- Spoiler alert for me but they KILLED Logan?!?

and more to everything messy in their house. MESS

Edit: fuck autocorrect forever lmao
I'm sorry for the spoiler! Should I spoiler cut it?? 😬
Lol it’s all good! I’m probably super late and like, maybe everybody already knew how it went down for a while now? 😅🙏🏾

Girl....😳 They are both awful and Dax is full on petty/bitter. I wouldn’t trust him.
the fact they she brought this up at all "i'm the breadwinner" it's definitely a dig, but she's acting like it's not a big deal and they're both fine with it but clearly it's an issue because she's still talking about it. he is totally bitter.

honestly - relationships should not be this much work!!
His "America's sweetheart has some character defects" remark during a live interview has convinced me he fucking hates her, tbh

I get the feeling Dax hates that she's the breadwinner. The man felt fucking emasculated over her leaving post-its around the house with reminders for him. He's def not ok with this lol

Not scheduling sex! Jesssssus
for God there is just... so much to comment on here I don't know where t start.

1. if a partner everrr told me i was self indulgent and a bad wife and mother because I was in a depressive episode, idk what I'd do. I'm angry just thinking about it

2. her husband is a fucking loser. she sucks, but god it must be exhausting to be around him. do they even like each other?

3. renaming hangman is some liberal ass bullshit. as if getting your kids to sing baa baa rainbow sheep will undo them growing up in a white supremacist society? like they've done the bare minimum so they can pat themselves on the back, whilst continuing on being their racist ass selves.
Kristen posts on ONTD are always entertaining. The way the users drag them are hilarious lmao.
They've renamed hangman as fullman in their house to avoid lynching comparisons.

I hate them lmao
wtf is that cover? Is she wearing her husband's human skin mask now?
Midsommar-esque face mask vibes 😂
There’s only so long you can play out a love affair

Idk maybe I need to hear the tone but I feel they played LoVe as a tad bit more than a love affair. 4 seasons and a movie tad bit more.

Like, love of my life one that got away not weekend flings at a beach house type but whatever. If they wanted her single and bitter just never bring Logan back. Simple.
mte. every time i hear them trying to explain why they killed Logan, i'm like the confused math lady gif. like you use fan service to do a movie and once hulu picked up the show for a new season, you decide to kill logan and go it is what it is. like am i missing something there between the movies and season?

i really dont know how they expect fans to feel. they totally gaslighted fans and play it off like it was nothing.

plus rob's explanation to why he kill him off made me more pissed off bc it was sexist and misogynic.
Yeah, the idea that Veronica is only interesting when she is unhappy, alone, and traumatized will never, ever sit right with me. Especially when she hasn't been in that kind of place since SEASON ONE EPISODE ONE.
they ain't got no prenup?? lol

i mean, she has more incentive to stay and make it work, but he doesn't. he could've left her ass a long time ago, racking up bank along the way. but this way still benefits him too. having a live in person to continue to coddle him and pay his way. kristen is absolutely fucked.
it's not Frozen money, but he must be making really nice money with his podcast
in the article she mentions that their parents have been married and divorced multiple times and that is very much something they don't want.

They've got some childhood issues there that they're holding on to
I'm no mental health professional but Dax's response to her having an emotional breakdown sounds not great! Like, making her feel guilty for having feelings?
Lord, when I read that quote I got so excited to see this land on ONTD.

I don't have an overall issue with what Dax said to Kristen, mainly because (as much as we hear about these people monthly at this point) I don't know their marriage and how they function as individuals. Some people want and work better with someone being blunt like that, and other people need to be validated and given space. Personally speaking, when I was deep in my depression I had friends who tried everything they could and ultimately had to give me the bootstraps talk and I agreed. Sometimes your ass has to fight it, you just do. Not every time, but you do. If she found him to be right in the end, then I trust what she's saying. However, the part where he talked about being a good mother and a good wife and not acknowledging her without those titles is what really, really pissed me off. Because those struggles can be exasperated by those responsibilities of being a mother and a wife, but in the end if she was unmarried and childless, she would probably still be in bed because this pandemic rocked us in ways I don't think we fully comprehend yet.

Their marriage seems exhausting but something tells me these two weirdos actually do love each other and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong but they just seem to stubborn to imagine a world where maybe they would be healthier individuals and parents without being married.

? unmarried and childless people wouldn't have other responsibilities or a reason to get out of bed
Huh.
That's definitely not what I said.

Lol at them killing off Logan for a chance of a good S5 storyline but this actually made them not be renewed for S5. I'm not even a huge LoVe fan and I was pissed at the ending because it was just so incredibly dumb and a slap in the face to fans who supported their show, like as the creator of the show how can you NOT understand your fanbase to this amount? Same with the Gilmore Girls revival.

I feel like Dax Shepherd and Kristen Bell are two very different people. Who knows what their marriage is like irl. But they remind me of Courteney Cox and David Arquette.
