Kristen Bell on Dax Shepard, Pandemic Depression and Raising Anti-racist Children

  • She is the breadwinner in her marriage to Dax Shepard, and has no desire to coddle him about it. They also schedule sex and don't have a prenup.

  • She encouraged her kids to share their feelings but would remind them, "we have the luckiest life you have ever heard of. You have a swimming pool in your backyard."

  • Her mental health spiraled during the pandemic (she has experienced anxiety and depression since eighteen), resulting in her sobbing in bed until her husband confronted her. "Hey, real quick, are you helping anyone right now by sitting and crying in your bed, or are you just being self-indulgent? Either get up and donate money or donate your time or do something to help, or take that story in, give it some love, and come out here and be a good mom and a good wife and a good friend and live your life in honor of the suffering that happens in the world.’” Bell had an understandable response: “‘How dare you?’ But also, ‘You’re right.’”

  • She relied on pilates and CBD for coping, as well as knitting and puzzling. She also took a break from her "pod," which includes her Veronica Mars costar Ryan Hansen.

  • Speaking of Veronica Mars, she stands by the controversial reboot ending of killing off Veronica's longtime love Logan.
"There’s only so long you can play out a love affair…and let me tell you, people were angry that we killed Logan. I’m still proud of the way that we did it. I thought we matured it. Same thing with Frozen II." Veronica Mars was not renewed for a season five.

  • After Dax's relapse on painkillers, he bought some drug tests and gives Kristen permission to test him whenever she wanted. When asked about smoking weed around Dax, she praises Shepard: “He’s just good at trying, and that’s all you can ask of anyone."

  • Bell and Shepard are united in a mission to raise socially conscious, antiracist kids in the privileged bubble of Hollywood. They've renamed hangman as fullman in their house to avoid lynching comparisons.

  • She feels lucky about not experiencing negativity in Hollywood and is happy people have found joy in her products during the pandemic.

Fucking kill me plz. Insufferable.
Their marriage sounds like an unhealthy nightmare, but that they're desperate not to get divorced like their parents. Yikes.
I have no idea who gave them a game show where they'll be competing against each other. That shit is gonna be SO uncomfortable.
I feel like she is the ~breadwinner but is also desperately carrying him on her back to protect his ego
They seem the type to take it home and argue bitterly about it while they get ready for bed.

all the contestants are gonna have amazing tea to spill afterwards
I know someone like this IRL. They don't want to raise their kids with divorced parents, and they don't think their marriage is that bad but the cracks are there on full display in the public sphere, alongside these over-the-top love declarations.

I can't imagine they're that good at hiding the issues in front of the kids, and I don't think they understand that this isn't healthy for the parents or the kids.

When did celebrities start trying to boost their online presence so much? She annoys me, as well as Reese and Gwyneth and all the other white ladies who feel the need to overshare every detail of their life nowadays. Their lives are not as interesting as they think they are.
When online influencers/content creators started horning in on the advertising deals, i think
makes sense
I'm upset that when she was crying, instead of validating her feelings and trying to help his WIFE and the mother of his fucking kids, he instead tells her, "Are you helping anyone?"

They should not be married and they're going to fuck up their kids by showing them that toxic relationships are what's normal.
Yeah, it's pretty fucking alarming. His wife who he KNOWS struggles with depression and anxiety is sobbing in bed and his thought is to essentially shame her into getting up? Bro, disappear into the woods.
Right? And then he can appear on one of MrBallens YouTube videos, about people who vanished in the woods!

P.S. Check this dude out. He is seriously the best storyteller ever. Please don't tell me he is problematic y'all 😔
I fucking hate these two so fucking much.

Seriously though, Dax is a POS for that reaction and I am amazed she showed restraint.
When you're in a dark place like that, you just don't have the energy to argue or fight back. At least I don't. It sucks.
Do we have time to unwrap?
Let's start with "not codling him" when it comes to him facing reality: first bullet point.
Hello, we are here, unwrap!
You're joining this meeting more than fifteen minutes late and didn't read the first notes? What do I have to do with you

"Hey, real quick, are you helping anyone right now by sitting and crying in your bed, or are you just being self-indulgent?"

Her husband is a bad person.
if im crying in bed and depressed id prefer someone to tell me to take my time and that things will get better and its fine to be sad every once in a while or whatever..not this nonsense get off ur ass and contribute tough love bs.

their relationship is SO weird what with the babying of dax, their anger problems and real disdain for each other, their "third" partner, their unbearable smugness, their need for pat us on the back-ness.. i could go on.

fullman lmao. you've saved the world now.
Right? I had some pretty dark times where I couldn't do much more than cry and stare into space. My husband helped me by telling me I was totally justified in how I was feeling, and how he was proud of me for taking my meds and consistently talking to a therapist, and dark places are normal.

I told him I felt stupid and like I had nothing to cry about, so he suggested making two lists...one called Reasons To Cry that I could look at when I was feeling like a big baby, and Reasons Not To Cry to look at next so I could calm down and try to find the silver lining. It honestly really helped and I still consult those lists when I'm having a really shitty time.

If he had acted like Dax, the sad thing is, I probably also would've agreed with him. But it wouldn't have helped me.
Scheduling sex is beyond death by routine to me. Some parts she’s not as annoying as I thought she’d be in this, like focusing on hobbies to get through
Just reading the title exacerbated my migraine.
Experiencing symptoms of a mental illness is just being self-indulgent? Good lord, what an awful ignorant take. Get out, girl. That is emotionally abusive.
is it bad that I read "anti-christ childen) and was just like... alright
Liam Payne, the antichrist of Harry Styles, would agree
white devils in the making, you read it right
