25 of the Vancouver Canucks test postive for Covid-19

- Last week one of the Canucks was pulled from practice after a COVID test came back positive. Their games were postponed for a week.
- The number of Canucks added to the NHL's COVID protocol quickly escalated (a player is added to the list if they've come into contact with anyone who may have tested positive) with more tests coming back as positive. Many of the team's family members have also tested positive. The wife of the first player to test positive has received a lot of hate online with fans blaming her for the outbreak.
- As of April 7, 21 players and 4 staff have tested positive with the source of the infection being a variant. It is believed that the cases are the P.1. variant as Vancouver has become the hotspot for it outside of Brazil.
- The NHL had previously said they still want to continue with the Canucks season but with the entire main roster in protocol, they'd have to recall players from their AHL team which also recently had to pause their season due to COVID.
- Several people in the NHL community are now calling for the season to either be postponed or to be moved to a bubble (which they should have been in to begin with).
- This is the largest outbreak in the NHL.

You mean acting like there's not a deadly disease out there means you're going to catch the deadly disease when you stop taking preventative measures in order to not get the deadly disease you just got??????? what went wrong here!!!!!
My favorite bit about this is that there was all this feigned shock that this could be happening when the Canucks were following ALL the Covid protocols. And like... clearly they fucking weren't.

Idk if it's offtopic but I tested positive. After a year of frontline and being ultra careful....I finally got it and it's from my brother. Who was not well but my evil sis in law didn't want her precious Easter holidays ruined so dragged him around and now he's given it to me and my mum and dad. And I'm fuming.

People suck.

Covid sucks. Vaccinate people. And stay safe. Literally once my 10 days are up I'm back at work as it's my holidays right now. Fucking capitalism.

Why the fuck are NHL carrying on...
I'm so sorry :(
getting it and infecting someone from my family has been my biggest fear this past year, i'm so sorry bb!
i'm really sorry, i hope your case is super mild.
Mainly been like flu and I'm doing decent. But I'm so stressed everytime my mum or dad have a coughing fit. Thank god they're both vaccinated atleast. I hope it passes quickly. Isolating alone in a room is actually the worst part of this.

feel better! and after you recover, kick your SIL's ass
once we're all vaccinated, we're coming to help you beat the shit outta that SIL.
Oh no, ugh, people are so ridiculous and selfish! I’m so sorry that you got it and I wish you and your parents a quick recovery. <3
I hope your symptoms remain mild and your parents get better soon. I'm glad they are vaccinated so their bodies should pull through. I sincerely hope your SIL thinks about her actions because it was very irresponsible.

Also staying alone in a room does suck. I had to do it for almost three weeks before asking my Mom if I could join her for meals and hang out a bit. I was lonely and missed her.
why is the wife of the first positive player getting hate? was she travelling/not following protocols? on one hand, i get getting roasted for that, but also i can't help, but think there are some prob overzealous fans being rude just because their fave team is out of commission.
nope hockey wives usually stay home so i'm just gonna blame this on misogyny since a lot of hockey fans are full of it :(
She did a podcast weeks ago where she said going grocery shopping is the only opportunity she gets to “somewhat” interact/see other people. Then her husband was recently the first positive case and people dug the sound clip up.

The league had sent a memo asking all members of the players household to refrain from going outside and use delivery services as much as possible...even though the players weekly interact with 50+ people in different states/provinces and then play a game in an enclosed space with others who were just travelling. But sure, it’s there SOs who are of concern.
They say they haven't been doing anything risky this spring, but also said it's "ironic" since they weren't abiding by protocols last summer (they got married; he kicked her in the face while doing a "Pony" striptease.) They went hiking with a teammate, though, so they obviously they weren't shut-ins.

I think it's totally possible that they got it despite not doing really high-risk stuff (I think that's how the Nats outbreak played out, since it's been strongly hinted the 1st positive test was in a cancer survivor who just had thyroid surgery) especially if it's the p.1 variant, but I won't fault anyone for not giving them the benefit of the doubt. (But threats and only blaming the wife are out of line.)
tbh, knowing what the Canucks are like normally, the idea that they'd all sit at home waiting for Uber Eats is a bit of a joke. These guys love doing rails of coke and cheating on their wives all around Vancouver. Sure, it's *possible* that they abided by the rules but it seems increasingly unlikely.

The fact that they held practice before receiving the initial person's results is mindboggling. Like bros what the fuck. I'm glad the rest of the North division has been mostly unaffected by COVID.

Also the Canucks have a pretty low chance of making it to the playoffs so like tbh just call your season and let everyone recover and try again next year.
Can the Sabres call their season too? As a fan I can barely even watch anymore.
loooool they might as well :| sorry bb
I’m sorry.
as a canucks fan i'd rather them just scrap this season and focus on getting healthy again.
The Stars' head coach got pulled for Covid protocols (for what ended up being a false positive test, thankfully) in the middle of a game last weekend. The NHL is a full on mess.

William Nylander isn't playing tonight because someone close to him has it.... and he was at practice today!
why was the player allowed to be at practice anyway?? that's just a stupid move on their part. all players should be benched while waiting on test results jfc

hopefully none of them or their family members get super sick.
They usually are not allowed to be in contact with the team when they're in COVID protocol, so I have no idea wtf team management was thinking allowing him to be there while waiting for results.
I would imagine it's because "Covid protocols" aren't actually being followed at all and just didn't expect it to backfire this badly.

They get tested every day, so my guess it was likely a routine test that turned out to be a positive (not that he was showing symptoms). I have no idea why the NHL isn't smart enough to have a protocol in place that you can't practice until your result from the day before is known, but they are dumb as hell.
I think they're just routinely testing everyone involved with the team, so it probably wasn't based on exposure or symptoms. He wouldn't have been in Covid protocol until the positive test came back.
I’ve been thinking a lot about much bullshit is that theater and music have had to shut down completely but we are doing all these things to bend over backwards for sports leagues to function because god forbid sports have to suffer.
tbf no fans are allowed in the arenas for the NHL games, but they are still televised. It would be nice if artists and performers could get some kind of contract situation so they could perform on television and get $$ that way. I get that there is online streaming stuff happening but it obviously doesn't have the same reach. Then again, sports bring all these networks bazillions of dollars a year so it's no wonder they're trying everything in their power to make sure they can still happen.
Fair for the NHL, but yesterday the Texas Rangers had a 100% capacity stadium

I think some teams are letting fans in, though not at capacity. I know the Pens got some flack a few weeks back for photoshopping masks onto the face of fans in the stands.
depends on where the teams play. the rangers have 2000 fans in the stadium with proof of a negative test or a vaccine card. i can't imagine what a stars game looks like rn though.
tbf no fans are allowed in the arenas for the NHL games

for the Canadian teams. most of the US teams have at least some fans :/

Incredibly reduced capacity and masks are mandated but I think somewhere around 1,000 fans are allowed at Red Wings games.

It’s all about money, unfortunately. Sports bring in so much of it and they have HUGE contracts with networks. Plus they support gambling and a bunch of other industries. It’s stupid. For sure.
the news out of Brazil are horrifying

and the whole AstraZeneca mess in europe

i'm just so tired
So scary hearing what's going on in Brazil, the mass graves and the hospitals being full and having to turn people away. I wish the best to everyone in Brazil (and everyone who is affected by this of course).
yeah it would be nice if health regulators could be more transparent about the fact that the problem with the astrazeneca vaccine is specifically with women who are on the pill. but nobody cares about informing women of health risks that affect them
Do you have any info you could share about this please :)

Oh wow I was only saying to my mum yesterday that I wondered if perhaps there was a link between the vaccine and the contraceptive pill because that carries s risk of clotting. I'm 32 so won't get the choice of my jab so I think I'll come off the pill for now until after I've had my jab.
Meanwhile Bolsonaro was recently mocking governors and mayors who tried to have shut downs and encouraging his fans to disobey those orders. And he had a birthday party for himself.

Wtf is this shitty ass protocol they have? How did they fuck up so bad??

Tangentially on topic but I get my first shot on Friday! I'm so happy.
I’m glad for you! I just got my first dose about 30 minutes ago. I am so happy.
Congrats to us 👏👏👏
got my first dose today as well! I was feeling pretty down about the still shitty situation we're in but actually getting the vaccine has made me feel so much better! and not even because I'm excited to go back to normal, bc I still plan to wear a mask and not see too many people. but knowing I'm a step closer to helping prevent the spread, I feel so happy!

this is gonna be a repeat of when that guy on the ravens coaching staff who was an anti masker exposed half the team to covid isn't it.
I’m so tired of people not taking it seriously.
Most days I just go through the motions of everyday life: eating, working, sleeping watching tv, laughing at funny things on my phone and being generally “ok” but some moments it just hits me like, this is our dystopian reality and it’s really shitty and far from normal and I have no idea how I can emerge from this especially when my life was already aimless pre-pandemic.
same. I stupidly went to grad school mostly as a means to escape a traumatic home situation, hoping it'd lead to more money. come to find that's not the case in general, especially not in this economy. I'm lucky to have a job in my field right now but it pays shit and I'm not finding anything better. I'm not sure how I'll function when things do open up again. I'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised, though, as I was by the shot of hope I got after being vaccinated today, despite feeling very depressed yesterday about everything. hope you can hang in there and hope things turn around for you. <3
Why is the wife of player one being blamed?
lol bc people love blaming women
misogyny probably :(
Most sports fans are garbage?
hockey culture is bottom of the barrel trash
a hockey podcast i listed to with all women has been doxxed multiple times because i guess some men can't handle women talking about hockey or know more than them. but i feel like sports fandoms in general hate women.

Fucking hell
21 players?? how many people are in a team??
23 players + 6 player taxi squad (players who get called up for injury or whatever), plus the coaching staff which can be 5ish people.
Plus medical and equipment guys.
good luck with that P1 y'all. stay safe. it's much worse than the original covid
como viver no nosso país?
