Ethan Hawke joined Marvel's Moon Knight because he wanted to work with Oscar Isaac



Back in 2018, Ethan Hawke criticised the overpraising of the superhero genre in film, saying that 'Logan' was good but the rest of it was just big business that wasn't good for film.

Oh, how the worm turns. A couple years down the line, and Hawke was announcing his role in the MCU series Moon Knight alongside fellow superior thespian, Oscar Isaac.

So what changed his mind?

Well, according to his interview with The Ringer, it was said thespian, Oscar Isaac!

"A lot of it… is Oscar to me, and the big fat cheque Marvel offered, to be honest with you," said the actor when asked why he decided on Moon Knight after passing on several comic book roles in the past. "I find him to be a very exciting player in my field. I like what he’s doing with his life. He reminds me of the actors, when I first arrived at New York, that I looked up to. Oscar’s younger than me, and I like the way he carries himself, and I like the way he thinks. And in general, good things happen when you’re in the room with people that you like the way they think, right?!"

LOL i don't get this whole "superhero films are overpraised" they don't win oscars/award season accolades?

and tbh i'd rather watch marvel films than oscar bait biopics or war films lmao

Only a handful of them have won and ... how can I say this that’s not “but they weren’t important awards” - it’s not for anything like acting or an entire cohesive package in best picture.

Look at it from his perspective- he’s being pressured to entertain films that are making a lot of money, so the industry looks upon them fondly, praising the existence of this kind of film, when they all run and offer the same experience. There’s nothing unique nor tantalizing about that for an actor who can afford to be choosy about his projects.

I don't think the number of trophies from your standards awards show is the only metric for determining whether something is praised. It's not like he said they were overrewarded. Superhero films absolutely dominate our culture and have legions of adoring fans.

I have stopped following Oscar nominations and i used to buy into that thinking at my young age I want to be a filmmaker

I mean look at Joker. It's literally copy+paste Taxi Driver but with a comic book villain, and it was absolutely lauded as a great film. If you took away the intellectual property from these stories most Marvel movies wouldn't be anything special. It's a very basic coming of age story except it's Captain America or something to make it edgy.

They aren't typically critically praised outside of a few, but they dominate the cultural conversation at the moment though. Like everyone and their mother is in a superhero film by now. To the point where people have floated the idea of creating award categories *just* to give them to superhero films as a reflection of how popular/financially successful those films are, because they think it's some kind of failure of the industry that like, Infinity War/Endgame didn't win a ton of awards.

They may not get tons of awards, but they are definitely praised by the public and by a lot of critics. And praised by studios, who decide what gets funding. So I do see his point. I feel like there are a lot less middle-of-the-road productions now in terms of budget.

I think of the 80s and 90s and how there were so many family/general audience films. Now it seems like almost everything is big budget/franchise/remake, or an indy hit. Where is the in between?? Maybe they're all on Netflix now instead?

It felt like it used to be more commonplace to have films like John Hughes's, Sandlot, the Vacation movies (though those became a series), Now and Then, Goonies, etc. I feel like you don't see those types of films in movie theaters anymore.

I nearly compromised my beliefs last year when I was in the running to get a job with the Kushner family. I really despise my current position and I have been trying to leave for two years and six days at the time of writing and this other position was perfect and exactly what I was looking for.

But you know, working for the MAGA was eating me inside. But at the end they didnt offer me the position so beliefs in tact for the moment.

And yes, Oscar is hot as fuck so I would do the same as Ethan
