Happy birthday to queen Rihanna! The
The context: Riri was a 23-year-old ingenue who had just released her album Loud. It had hit after hit after hit, including "Only Girl (In The World)," "What's My Name?," "S&M," "California King Bed," "Man Down," "Cheers," and "Love the Way You Lie."
Anna Wintour deigned to grant Riri her first ever Vogue cover. Since then, she has had 15 (!!!) Vogue covers.
Surprisingly, Vogue was very innovative in having a black woman pose in a way that was reminiscent of a popular Disney princess, Ariel.
But in true Vogue fashion, they managed to fuck up an otherwise great photoshoot. For some reason they popped this maroon wig on her head, which makes her look like a 45-year-old middle manager at an arts center.
Even the outtakes where her hair is covering her face is glorious.
You can also enjoy a video of baby Riri talking about body positivity.
Many Riri stans feel that this was her "Imperial phase," where her career was at its absolute peak.
I will leave you with the full image from her cover, uncluttered by any crappy Vogue text.
Fav song from Loud?
See another notorious photoshoot with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
