‘Promising Young Woman’: How Director Emerald Fennell & Carey Mulligan Concealed a Timely Truth Bomb Amid ’90s Nostalgia https://t.co/yYcdFBs48e
— Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) January 13, 2021
- 'Promising Young Woman' was written and directed by Emerald Fennell (you might know her from her role as Camilla on The Crown). It's a revenge fantasy thriller that revolves around Mulligan's grief-stricken character, Cassie, who is on a mission to expose sexual predators.
- The review describes it thusly: 'Styled like an entrancing ’90s romcom, it wrongfoots the viewer at every turn with its fluffy-sweatered, heart-printed world, punctuated by cupcakes and pop songs.'
- The film is backed by Margot Robbie's production company, LuckyChap, who were early believers in the story's concept.
- On the ending, Mulligan says, [Mild spoilers]“Emerald was steadfast about it from the beginning. She was absolutely clear,” [...] “And I’m sure she heard objections. Even when we were working on it, [the crew] were saying, ‘Oh, I just wish [that didn’t happen].’ But that’s just not reality. The film does live in this slightly heightened world, and I think there’s a tendency for people to want that to carry over into the storyline. But the storyline stays in truth. And I’m so proud of Emerald for standing firm on that.”
