nicole beharie on life after sleepy hollow: i was blacklisted



- for those who never watched, nicole was considered the lead of sleepy hollow with tom mison as her sidekick/co-lead. in 2016, both actors became ill, but only nicole was ultimately fired: "For me, six years ago I was on a TV show. My co-star and I both got sick at the same time with the same illness and had different treatments. He was allowed to go on leave for a month and I had to continue working. There was a smokescreen of me getting my own episode titled Mama. By the end of that episode, I started to fall apart."
- presumably because the production team didn't believe her, nicole states that they had multiple doctors coming in to test her ON SET who all confirmed she was ill: "They sent in lots of doctors, and I had daily checkups to make sure I was actually sick because they had to get the production going. Every doctor said I wasn't doing well and that I needed to rest. That is not what they wanted to hear. Months ensued and I got a lawyer. I got my hours down and worked through it. But then I developed an autoimmune condition. I had C. difficile [a bacterium that causes a range of symptoms], which had me on eight different prescription medications."
- while tom was given a month off to go back to england and recover, nicole was forced by production to finish the mama episode: "I pushed through it and then by the end of that episode I was in urgent care. And all the doctors, including the doctors that the studio was sending, were all confirming, ‘Hey, she can't work right now.'"
- after abbie's death, tom was quoted on not understanding the decision: "Abbie is the one the audience can relate to so when you're entering this insane world of Sleepy Hollow, you go with Abbie. She's been the guide and Ichabod is this insane man in the periphery."
- in looking back, nicole now feels like she's at a point of understanding: "I feel like it's taken me the last few years to really see clearly that it wasn't personal, it's about the way that these structures are set up. It was very difficult to talk about at the time because I wanted to get back to work. But I was labeled as problematic and blacklisted by some people."
- she's also aware that the show had a history of killing off it's characters of color: "Sometimes I think that some people I was working with didn't like that I was unwell but loved by the audience...but everyone of color on that show was seen as expendable and eventually let go. I tried to get work afterwards and people were like, 'We heard you were difficult.' But no one can say I was late or unprofessional or negative."

Has Tom ever spoken up about her exit? Because if not fuck him too.

I’m not saying he should have quit the show when they fired her but it was so obvious that racism was a huge part of her exit.

Don’t pretend you have a friendship and good working relationship and not have your coworkers back when they are being treated unfairly.

He continued, "I never really was, funnily enough, interested in Ichabod's backstory in the beginning…that changed a lot in season two when they then did start to explore Ichabod's backstory and family and things, so it'll be interesting to be where they go without that crutch because I still think Abbie was grounding that as well. I'll be very curious to see whether they decide to find another way to ground Ichabod in reality or whether they think he's an inhabitant of the modern era enough that he can do it on his own. I don't know what they're planning, but I don't envy them having to make that decision!"


i assume he was trying to toe the line of acknowledging that abbie being killed makes no sense because she's literally the lead while not getting himself fired.

And don’t forget the role Lyndie Greenwood played making things difficult for Nicole on set. Apparently, she didn’t like Nicole and she was a total bitch to her, along with the actress who played Katrina. And then of course they sidelined Nicole on her own show in favor of a white actress. Hollywood.

I didn't care for this show, but it was utterly ridiculous that they basically tanked the actual STAR OF THE SHOW. I didn't realize it was because of an illness, that makes it so much worse. People can't help getting sick, and to blacklist someone over it? The outrage.

She was the far more interesting star. Mison imo was dull as all get out

And tanked the show right along with her by writing her out. It's not exactly enough in the way of justice but I'm at least glad the show got what it deserved after firing the only compelling character.

I thought Ichabod was adorable and fun to watch, but only because of his interactions with Abbie. The minute she was gone, bam, nothing.

Yeah, he was great with her because they had chemistry but when it was him and Katrina that actress just dragged him down into her chemistry vacuum with her and he was pretty terrible.

He was funny in a fish-out-of-water context that could be played by anyone/character. She was responsible for the show's entire personality. It's not easy to make a common detective interesting without going overboard, and she managed to do it.

She had a C. diff infection too, which... if you know what that entails, it's NOT pretty. The fact that they wouldn't accept that she was sick and needed to be treated (NOT work), despite having doctors come on set and test/report her diagnosis, is beyond absurd. C. diff is notorious for being resistant to antibiotics and recurring too. So it's not as simple as take this pill and you'll be fine in a few days.

I'm not saying it's similar, but I was sick with a nasty GI bug where I lost like... 10 lbs in a few days. My doctor didn't believe that it was possible, but the numbers didn't lie. And I couldn't hold any food or drink down. My job at the time wouldn't let me call in sick. They basically threatened to fire me, and when I got there, I told them I couldn't handle any food. And it wasn't until I nearly passed out, that they surrounded me and were like, "Oh, yeah, you look really pale and in bad shape." America and its obsession with work-even-at-the-doorstep-of-death is completely and utterly fucked.

I remember she talked about this before too. It's really heartbreaking. She absolutely was the center of the show and it became very obvious when no one watched the show after she left. And she's right that all the actors of color were viewed as expendable. I remember I and so many viewers were excited by the diverse cast when the show first started, but it seemed like everyone was leaving one by one.

Mama was a great episode, but I'm so saddened that she was suffering through it. They should have halted production, point blank! I think this really ties into the concept that people minimize the pain and sickness of black women, though this time the bias was perpetrated by the producers and not the health professionals.

People were talking about that LSA. The woman who made the claim is or was apparently friends with Lyndie, so I’m skeptical. She also claims Nicole had her fired (as a body body) and replaced with a biracial. Considering it’s obvious how little pull Nicole had on set, I remain skeptical about the claims.

The one that was posted up in the first comment thread? The whole thing sounded suspicious considering what Nicole is publically revealing right now, and that person doesn't have an IMDB credit or anything like that linking her to Sleepy Hollow.

Honestly a lot of people/companies are terrible when you get ill. At the end of 2019 I ended up in the emergency room for excessive bleeding; I was contracted with two companies at the time (ending one job and beginning another) and I had conventions to work so I was DEAD. The company I was starting with was very kind; but the company I was ending with seemed annoyed that I asked for a deadline extension and they never hired me again.

It's just never worth it to kill yourself for a job.

I'm an illustrator and the company in question was a book publisher but I've also worked in animation and gaming and both those industries tend to be terrible about people's health as well (lots of pressure to always be doing overtime and small staffs that can't compensate if people are sick.)

agreed, plus it can recur. i had it on and off for the first half of 2009 - you basically cannot eat and it weakens you. i drank so much gatorade! 🤢

I was diagnosed with c diff back in November, and it hasn't recurred yet and I don't have any symptoms now, so I'm really hoping it doesn't, but honest to god when I read c diff in the summary my heart dropped.

I was in pain all day every day. I couldn't eat. It also caused a lot of psychological distress for me because it was the result of me taking an antibiotic (clindamycin) so I felt like it was my fault. So stressful, especially the pre diagnosis period when I was trying to figure out if I had developed IBS. I can't imagine how much worse it would be to be an Black actress, I was just at home doing nothing when I got it.

i know nothing about this show, never read anything about it. but she was the lead of the show and they killed her off!? and treated her that way? like jesus christ you would think as the lead she would be given preferential treatment but damn racism still came up on top instead.
