I think networks supremely underestimate how many people like fantasy shows. This audience came directly from True Blood and they didn't replace it with anything. https://t.co/eIqSNxFjHO— This is the voicemail for Rebekah Weatherspoon (@RdotSpoon) January 2, 2021
According to a Variety round-up of the ratings winners and losers of 2020, "Without Game of Thrones, HBO saw more than half of its adults 18-49 linear audience disappear in 2020." Is it because the finale sucked so much? Or because HBO didn't have another fantasy series to replace it with? When Game of Thrones ended, HBO replaced it on Sunday night with Big Little Lies instead. HBO has Westworld and His Dark Materials, as well, but those shows haven't connected with audiences the same way Game of Thrones did.
