The show is set in Lagos and steeped in science-fiction and explores “deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo”.
The little crowdfunded production company (Kugali) came on disney's radar due to a quote in an interview with the BBC. One of the creators had said he hoped “kick Disney’s arse”. Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer came across the interview and was intrigued she said, “Here was three talented comic book artists. Their dream was to bring African stories created by African artist to the world, highlighting the diversity of cultures, histories and voices across the continent. Their talents as storytellers blew us away. I’m proud to announce the first of its kind collaboration to bring original long for series to Disney+.”
The upcoming Disney+ series is called Iwaju which literally means "the future".
Kugali was set up by 3 friends from Uganda and Nigeria - Fikayo Adeola, Hamid Ibrahim and Tolu Olowofoyeku. Visit their website and buy some pan-african comic books - they also have free reads.
