Sia’s new movie slammed for portrayal of autism, singer blasts critics

Sia debuted the trailer for her film, “Music,” starring Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr. and Maddie Ziegler, and immediately faced criticism for casting Ziegler as a character with autism.
The movie centers on Music (Ziegler), a teenager with autism who has a passion for music.
Hudson plays Music’s half-sister and guardian Zu, a former drug dealer, and Leslie Odom Jr. plays her friend Ebo.

Echoing everyone's sentiments on her blatant ableism and general asshattery but also the LOJ role is...not good either lol

Shes having a very public and weird White Lady moment

I miss the days when the only reason I knew who Sia was was pro ana playlists

that's hilarious. i didn't realize somehow that pro-ana playlists used to exist. i was deep in that toxic community at the time, but i guess i dodged that sad aspect!

Oh god, the music is how you know I’m doing badly 😩 I’ve collected so many songs over the years, then Spotify came along and let us share them easily lmao

Holy fuck the blatant ableism. Sia is a horrible piece of trash
Has she always been like this? Like....irritatingly awful?
lol if she dont get behind her ugly ass hair curtains

nobody want you behind a camera you fucking tosser
My jaw literally dropped when I saw the trailer. I cannot believe someone thought that was ok in 2020, especially someone who claims to have "done research for 3 years" and had a "list of autistic consultants" yet won't name any of them or talk about the "research she did." Note she also had no idea Autism Speaks is problematic despite this extensive three year research span with multiple consultants.

Yeah the fact that she didn’t know autism speaks is trash shows she def didn’t do research/consult anyone in the autistic community like wtf lol

she was aware months ago, she just didn't care

this racist white woman with a fried brain is now exploiting and coming for people with autism? she really needs to get slapped one day

i wonder if she is friends with lindsay lohan, they both are racists with drug/alcohol fried brains and white superiority complexes

I'm tired of neurotypicals trying to write autistic characters. They always make them stereotypes because they genuinely don't understand us. It's funny when I think some fictional characters are definitely autistic (looking at you Bones, Amélie, Luna Lovegood) but their creators are adamant they aren't because they think autism is bad and negative lol

Edit: anyway the best autistic characters are the ones who are accidentally autistic lol because their creators didn't have prejudices when making them

Re: Bones - idk what his justification is for her not being autistic?? I've seen a ton of tumblr (don't judge me!!) writeups that kind of went through her identifying factors like her inability to finess sarcasm, takes things literally, her being super set in her ways/being pretty agitated when things are changed, I really can/do believe that if she were a real person she'd absolutely be on the spectrum, and tbh her friends and coworkers kind of treat her that way by accepting how she is and working with her on them cause they know that's who/how she is... I'm sure it's a problematique "portrayal" since she was presumably written by neurotypical ppl, but I find it pretty laughable that her creator would take so many cues from people with autism but deny that's what she is because... reasons? Tiring.
Lol Bones' creator said she's "almost" autistic... Aka she's autistic but since it's a synonym of the r-word in my mind then I'm going to downplay it to the max.

Neurotypical people really write complex characters who sometimes don't get jokes, are sensible to loud sounds, certain smells, certain tastes, are gifted at a particular thing, is obsessed about certain topics, generally quiet and in their world, has a different outlook towards life/topics/things... But they're totally not autistic! Because they laughed once to a joke and are self aware!

Recently there's this character that is obviously autistic (Beth Harmon in the Queen's Gambit) but everyone (read: neurotypical peeps) insists she just has ~PTSD~ due to childhood trauma. This is honestly annoying as an autistic person to see a character that ticks all the "autism" boxes but no one wants to believe it because *gasps* they don't fit the stereotype (aka not a Sheldon type or someone who speaks through a machine).

Glad I never liked her and never got the hype for her.
Sis saw Tropic Thunder and thought Simple Jack needed a musical remake. Jesus.
"I cast thirteen neuroatypical people, three trans folk, and not as fucking prostitutes or drug addicts but as doctors, nurses and singers."

Yet, your lead is not within the spectrum. What do you want? A medal for doing the bare minimum and not even that?
So Sia fucking sucks but also, what are those character names???
What is going on w/ her? I’ve casually followed her since her Zero 7 days, and she always seemed super chill and I’ve always appreciated how open she’s been about her anxiety. What is up w/ all these mean-spirited/shitty takes lately???
The "I'm a very rich middle aged white woman" train hit her with full force all of a sudden, it seems.

But I also think she might be tweeting drunk or high or something sometimes, because some of the stuff she tweets is just batshit. Like when she randomly asked Nicki and Cardi to stop feuding because Black Lives Matter(?).
I didn’t want to say it, but that’s pretty much what I was wondering. I know she’s struggled w/ alcohol in the past. I don’t know if she’s secretly always been awful, or if it’s something related more to substance or mental health going on?
She is very... out of touch with reality, and not in a cute way.

I also find it confusing that she made a film about autism when she obviously does not like people with autism or thinks much of them.
