Prince William has "tentatively welcomed" an investigation into BBC's alleged unethical handling of the Diana Panorama interview. Diana's brother accused the BBC of inappropriate handling, claiming he was shown “false bank statements” by interviewer Martin Bashir to help gain access to the Princess twenty-five years ago. It is thought that William has maintained communication with the BBC over the past two weeks and this has kept pressure on the broadcaster to ensure it found an authoritative enough figure to probe his concerns about how his mother was treated.
The bank statements shown to Diana implied a Spencer head of security was paid by tabloids for access to Diana. Other lies told to Diana by Bashir to get her interviewed included:
• Diana’s mail was being opened, her car tracked and phoned tapped by Royal Protection Officers.
• Prince Charles was “in love” with royal nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke.
• Prince William wore a watch with a listening device so Charles could spy on Diana.
The lies fueled Diana's paranoia and prompted her to drop the Royal Protection Officers, among other private fallout, including estrangement from William. Diana later regretted the Panorama interview.
William said in a statement: “The independent investigation is a step in the right direction. It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and subsequent decisions taken by those in the BBC at the time.”
