With the release of her smash hit, no-skips album, DISCO, takes the top spot on the UK charts with 55,000 chart sales—the biggest opening week of 2020 so far. DISCO is the star’s eighth UK Number 1 album and Kylie’s biggest opening week in 10 years, since 2010’s Aphrodite.
This means Kylie has become the first female artist to score a Number 1 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart in five consecutive decades—in the ‘80s, ‘90s, ‘00s, ‘10s, and ‘20s.
This new Number 1 album means Kylie also now surpasses Sir Elton John, Sir Cliff Richard, and George Michael in the all-time league of acts with the most UK Number 1 albums.
And, in case you haven't figured it out yet, even before this record-breaking news, BBC published a piece called "Why Kylie Minogue is pop’s most underestimated icon" so you'd best head over and educate yourself. As Rufus Wainwright says, "[Kylie] is the gay shorthand for joy."
