Jean Paul Gaultier celebrates Día de muertos at Frida Kahlo’s house

The famed French designer held an event at the casa azul, the house and museum of renowned Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, in commemoration of the ancestral tradition of día de los muertos.

A huge ofrenda and altar in honor of those who have passed away, was set on the premises, full of cempasúchil flowers and pan de muerto. The ofrenda is also a tribute to Frida’s “the wounded table” painting, and dedicated to artists who died due to pandemics through history, like Tiziano, Klimt, Schiele, Münch, O’Keeffe, Haring, Apollinaier, Nuréyev, Chopin, Moliere, Cezanne, Sor Juana and Manuel Felguérez.

Additionally, a retrospective of some of his dresses showcasing how Mexican culture, like Frida herself or the virgin of Guadalupe, has inspired the designer, was held on the house. Among the exhibited pieces was a black corset inspired by the one Frida had to wear due to her health problems.
