ONTD Original: Best and Worst (or weirdest) Fragrance Ads

Since Halloween is officially over, we are now officially in the holiday season and we all know what that means: Fragrance ads at every commercial break!

While fragrance is difficult to advertise (how to market a smell exactly?), we take a look back at the...interesting ways it has been advertised over the years. While many stick to the classic "sex sells" approach, others have tried different tactics to stand out among the others. Below (in no particular order) are the 5 of the best and 5 of the worst (or rather, weirdest depending on your point of view) fragrance ads.

1. Chanel No. 5 ft. Nicole Kidman

One of the most expensive commercials ever made, directed by Baz Lurhmann (same director of Moulin Rouge, which also starred Kidman), this "commercial" doesn't even feel like a commercial, and more like a like a mini film. Everything about this is flawless. The wardrobe, the love story, this was money well spent. Chanel will never have another commercial as good as this one.

2. Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds

This decades old commercial is a classic that still plays year after year, starring the iconic late actress taking off her white diamonds and saying "these always brought me luck".

3. Acqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani

This commercial has everything. Great soundtrack (who doesn't love Depeche Mode?), beautiful cinematography, and some nice eye candy as well. This is one I certainly look forward to seeing each year.

4. Miss Dior ft. Natalie Portman

While Ms. Portman has been the spokeswoman for Miss Dior for quite some time, this commercial features her as a bride in what appears to be a marriage her father set up, with black-and-white flashbacks juxtaposed against colorful present-day scenes of her running off in her wedding dress and getting in a helicopter with the man of her dreams. Plus hearing Janis Joplin is a nice touch!

5. Davidoff Cool Water

I included this one only because it had Josh Holloway.

1. Kenzo World

This...very strange commercial/mini film features Andie MacDowell's daughter doing a strange interpretive dance, making odd, twitchy facial expressions and licking a bust statue. Yep.

2. Dior SAUVAGE ft. Johnny Depp

This Dior commercial starring ONTD favorite and possible wife beater Johnny Depp driving in the desert, coming across a bison (?!) and burying his jewelry.

3. Chanel No. 5 ft. Brad Pitt

One of the most iconic fragrance of all time, Chanel No. 5 has had a few hits (as seen above) and a few misses over the years. This one, starring Brad Pitt speaking random words to the camera, is an obvious miss, and was even parodied on Saturday Night Live.

4. Perfect Marc Jacobs

A new fragrance by Marc Jacobs, this ad starting airing this past summer, and features nothing other than a bunch of women repeating the word "perfect" for the entire 30 seconds. Also, if they're already "perfect the way they are" like this ad is trying to tell us, why buy the perfume?

5. Lancome - La Vie est Belle ft. Julia Roberts

No disrespect to the Pretty Woman herself, but what is this commercial trying to tell us? Why is everybody attached with what looks like diamond strings? And if they're so easy to simply remove, why doesn't everybody do that?
