French celebrities and Charlie Hebdo tweet against decapitation of professor



Samuel Paty was a professor who used Charlie Hebdo religious caricatures as examples of freedom of expression on his lectures, because of this, the history teacher received threats since showing the caricatures to pupils around 10 days ago.

The suspect of beheading the professor, an 18-year-old, was shot dead by police following the knife attack, outside a school in a Paris suburb on Friday evening. The teen posted a photo of the teacher's body on Twitter shortly before, claiming responsibility for the killing.

Authorities have arrested 9 suspects, investigated for possible links to Islamic extremism. The attack is believed to be terror related, motivated after Mr Paty discussed caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad with his class.

The parent of a student had filed a complaint against the teacher, and the teacher’s information started to appear online, prior to the threats and attack.

A national tribute will be paid to Mr Paty.

I've always thought anyone who has it in them to kill someone is fucked up, but i think the ones that do some sort of beheading are even worse, cause you have to be reaaaaally fucked up to stand all that goes on through that horrible scene.

Oh god. I can't see this going well for Muslims/BIPOC in France. Afaik tensions are already high and France is racist af to begin with, and I've heard things have steadily been getting worse for a while now. RIP Samuel Paty.

The suspected killer posted the picture to his own Twitter before being apprehended :(

Per the Associated Press:

The prosecutor said a text claiming responsibility and a photograph of the victim were found on the suspect's phone. He also confirmed that a Twitter account under the name Abdoulakh A belonged to the suspect.

[Description-Graphic] It posted a photo of the decapitated head minutes after the attack, along with the message, "I have executed one of the dogs from hell who dared to put Muhammad down."

Unpopular, but I agree. It wasn't necessary, and could have put his students at risk. I don't understand why people think "teaching" excuses disrespect.
IMO, it's similar to teachers using the nword in class and/or allowing their students, for historical purposes or what the fuck ever. It's not necessary and they should know it will make people feel ostracized.

as a muslim AND as a history teacher: he showed the pictures as an example of how far free speech can go and to create a dialogue on what is ethical and what isn't. he asked muslim students in their class if they were willing to see it or not, and that they had permission to stand outside for a bit til the pictures were gone. some students waited outside the classroom, some stayed inside. i genuinely don't know how he could've done things better, he went for the approach i myself go for when i have to teach the evolution theory.

Before ONTD or anyone tries to be like oh he’s being disrespectful towards Islam - students, including Muslim students said the professor first told them that if they feel uncomfortable about this they are free to leave the classroom and showed it to them to prepare them for what they may encounter.
We use Ewan McGregor memes to make fun of Jesus and that should be game for any fairytale mascerading as a religion. Like pls prophets are like tarot cards level. No one should Fucking die from this and this is true for any religion.
I wish secularism would go further. So many innocent lives have been lost due to this bs. And before any Christians try to claim that’s different let’s remind them of the crusades. And before Hindus try to distance themselves from this let’s remind them of Kashmir.

Christians by and large, don't have any reverance for their own faith, that's why no one gets up in arms much these days about Jesus being mocked or caricatured. Islam has always revered all their prophets, and you KNOW it's a big deal. So why go there?

This generalisation. Girl evangelical Christians have so much reverence for their faith it is sick and unhealthy. In fact in the case of SOME Jews the reverence they have for their religion led to genocide in Palestine. And why single out Christians? It could be true for some of them but I’m sure that’s not the case for every single religion. And how much you revere your religion isn’t some competition that grants you immediate access to paradise.

Certain sects of Christianity are incredibly reverent toward their faith/practices/etc. It just depends on which ones. Nondenominational Christianity? Probably not. Mormons? Super reverent. Evangelicals? Super reverent.

See, this is what I don't get. He WAS being respectful. If he said that to me, I'd just leave the class. The killer chose to stay then got all offended over it. I don't agree with your take religion as a fairytale but each to their own.

Islam never has and still doesn't portray The Prophet's likeness, that is why it's extra offensive to us. But I wouldn't kill a professor over it. The most devout Muslim student would make a complaint.

Muslims do not have nearly as many protections as Christians in the west due to the orientalist and racist “othering” of brown/nonwhite Muslim people, so making fun of them on the same caliber as Christians is intellectually dishonest. Yikes, I’m terrified to go anywhere on the internet now like Reddit and Twitter in case I accidentally come across it. Wtf is wrong with people that they cant put something like that under about a thousand ‘only click if you want to see this’ warnings :(

There's this intrusive self destructive urge to go look, but I have to remind myself that it will add nothing to my life, only take.

So many times I've looked when I shouldn't have and only my forgetful depression-rotted brain saves me from picturing that shit every day for the rest of my life instead of the handful of days/weeks the image haunts me.
