French celebrities and Charlie Hebdo tweet against decapitation of professor

Samuel Paty was a professor who used Charlie Hebdo religious caricatures as examples of freedom of expression on his lectures, because of this, the history teacher received threats since showing the caricatures to pupils around 10 days ago.

The suspect of beheading the professor, an 18-year-old, was shot dead by police following the knife attack, outside a school in a Paris suburb on Friday evening. The teen posted a photo of the teacher's body on Twitter shortly before, claiming responsibility for the killing.

Authorities have arrested 9 suspects, investigated for possible links to Islamic extremism. The attack is believed to be terror related, motivated after Mr Paty discussed caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad with his class.

The parent of a student had filed a complaint against the teacher, and the teacher’s information started to appear online, prior to the threats and attack.

A national tribute will be paid to Mr Paty.

I cannot imagine what some of them are going through. Usually a retaliation might happen :(

And the sorrow of the Professor’s family.

Thats horrifying, holy shit. Religious extremists really fuck it up for others, this goes for all religions.
This is really all that needs to be said.
stop doing this shit
Ugh I fucking hate religion
Fr.
Those of you who are trying to compare the relations islam has to the western world to Christianity/Catholicism aren't giving the takes you think you are either. You can acknowledge the horror of this action without downplaying the pervasiveness of islamophobia.
THANK YOU. I cannot with ppl making comparisons to caricatures about e.g. jesus, it's not the same.

Yep agreed. Adding to your point, I know it's not the same as a caricature but... iconography in Christianity depicting Jesus and the Virgin Mary has a well-documented history dating back to the fourth century. Not remotely the same thing, so images of our God is not nearly considered as taboo. So with caricatures of Jesus I just roll my eyes at the edgelord or I'm just like "oh look a cute cartoon," but it's not explicitly forbidden thing. I'm really confused at people comparing it

sorry for the garbled word vomit comment, Catholicism makes it hard to type sometimes

Yeah some of the comments are interesting.

Also the response to acts of extremism are different. If a Christian terrorist does an act.…no one from the Christian/Catholic groups will have to fear for their lives or expect a violent retaliation. I’m probably too young to remember but I’ve heard of Christian extremists bombing up abortion clinics…I don’t remember thinking I’ll indirectly pay as a consequence.

I don’t think I can say the same for our Muslim brothers and sisters.
I can’t believe I had to make it to the second page to see this comment

the complete ignorance in this post of secular violence and its inextricable ties to genocidal colonialism in the muslim world is astounding.
plus the xenophobia prevalent in France. bans on the wearing of hijab, dastar, and yarmulke in schools disproportionately affect children of immigrants.
it’s infinitely easier to lean into islamophobia than to unpack over a century of colonialism, imperialism, and racist depictions of 1/4 of the world’s population as barbarians in media

No one is downplaying islamophobia? In fact single actions like these led to more threats to the Muslim community.

But I like how you only brought up Christianity. Cause we know there are only two religions. I guess it’s the only one that helped you make a point.

Fuck, fuck, FUCK religion. It's not real. Get over it. Stop murdering other people because they insulted your little fairy tale propaganda.
fucking psychopaths.
I don't understand how some people can still be killing in the name of god at this point in time. We either eliminate religion or find a way to exterminate extremists.
This is so horrifying on so many levels I can’t even begin. RIP to the teacher and my love to the Muslim community in France who will inevitably suffer massively from the inevitable reactionary islamophobia following this.
this world is hell and I don’t want to be a part of it anymore
this is horrying. no one deserves to die (in this way particularly) because of a caricature
I also hope that the muslim community stays safe, ontd already gave me a glimpse of what is to follow if you find this caricature offensive.

Men are such a fucking cancer. I know there have been a few female terrorists, especially when it comes to suicide bombing. But by and large it’s men who always do this insane shit, all around the world. Imagine being a teenager and thinking “yeah I’ll behead someone over a cartoon” fucking psycho
Ia, kinda ot but I was asked why I wasn't afraid to approach a woman on the side of the road who called out to me but I later said I wouldn't have approached a man and I was like...why do you think?! The likelihood of any man hurting me is so astronomical compared to a woman.
right lol like wtf
So sad. I wonder sometimes, do young men like this understand the harm they are potentially doing to their own religion or are they too far gone in their own hate.
Men don't understand anything. Young or old.
RIP.

This is so scary. Fuck religious extremism. No one deserves to die over a drawing.
